Wives & Daughters:
After years spent as a widower, village doctor Mr Gibson has decided to remarry; something for which his rather naive daughter, Molly, is wholly unprepared. Molly's world is soon overturned by the arrival of an unwanted stepmother and a bewitching, beautiful stepsister, Cynthia. In spite of the circumstances of their acquiantance and of being so entirely different from one another, the two girls instantly form a close relationship. But it is a friendship that is put to the test when they look set to become rivals in love. Matters are further complicated when a dangerous secret emerges from Cynthia's past in which she entangles Molly, with serious consequences for them both...

Cranford:
Cranford is a small rural Cheshire town, inhabited largely by women. This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very heart of which are the daughters of the former rector: Miss Deborah Jenkyns and her sister Miss Matty. But domestic peace is constantly threatened in the form of financial disaster, imagined burglaries, tragic accidents, and the reapparance of long-lost relatives.

North & South:
A powerful adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's feisty and passionate love story, set across the social divides in the changing world of Victorian industrial society. Margaret Hale is one of literature's most original heroines: a southerner from a country vicarage newly settled in the industrial northern town of Milton. In the shock of her move, she misjudges charismatic cotton mill-owner John Thornton, whose strength of purpose and passion are a match for her own pride and wilfulness. When the workers of Milton call a strike, Margaret takes their side, and the two are brought into deeper conflict. As events spiral out of control, Margaret - to her surprise - begins to fall in love with Thornton...

R162 Discovery Miles 1 620 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

1842. Cranford, a market town in the North West of England, is a place governed by etiquette, custom and above all, an intricate network of ladies. It seems that life has always been conducted according to their social rules, but Cranford is on the cusp of change...

For spinsters Deborah Jenkyns, the arbiter of correctness in Cranford, and Matty, her demurring sister, the town is a hub of intrigue - a handsome new doctor Frank Harrison from London has arrived; a retired Army Captain and his daughters have moved in to a house opposite and the preparations for Lady Ludlow's garden party are underway. Everyone - from charming rogue Dr Marshland to mean Mrs Jamieson and her lap dog - talks, and is talked about, behind closed doors.

The town also has its secrets which it slowly reveals; Matty's encounter with an old flame at the garden party; Lady Ludlow's land agent Mr Carter teaching a gypsy lad to read and write; the wild expectations of the May Day celebrations and - news that shakes the town when it is revealed - a railway line from Manchester is coming to Cranford.

Triple bill of television adaptations based on novels by Jane Austen. In 'Mansfield Park' (2007), at 10, Fanny Price (Billie Piper) goes to live at Mansfield Park, the estate of her aunt's husband, Sir Thomas (Douglas Hodge). Clever, studious, and a writer with an ironic imagination and fine moral compass, Fanny becomes especially close to her cousin Edmund (Blake Ritson), Thomas's younger son. Fanny is soon possessed of beauty as well as a keen mind and comes to the attention of a neighbour, Henry Crawford (Joseph Beattie). Sir Thomas promotes this match, but to his displeasure, Fanny has a mind of her own, asking Henry to prove himself worthy. In 'Northanger Abbey' (2007), Catherine Moreland (Felicity Jones), a spirited young beauty from the country, enters into the depraved society of Bath with dreams and fantasies sparked by her love of gothic romance novels. There she meets two men vying for her affection - the dashing and jealous John Thorpe (William Beck) and the gentle and sincere Henry Tilney (J.J. Field). Despite the advice of her mischievous new friend Isabella (Carey Mulligan), Catherine treats neither as more than a dear friend. That is until Catherine accepts an invitation to Northanger Abbey from Henry's grave and severe father, General Tilney (Liam Cunningham). In 'Emma' (1997), Kate Beckinsale stars as the eponymous heroine who is intent on finding partners for everyone - but only if she thinks they are the right coupling. Her efforts create confusion, and the outspoken Mr Knightly pours scorn on her matchmaking - although he may have ulterior motives for doing so.

Caravaggio (DVD): Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, Tilda Swinton Caravaggio (DVD)

R233 Discovery Miles 2 330 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Derek Jarman struggled for seven years to bring his portrait of the 17th-century Italian artist Michelangelo da Caravaggio to the screen. The result was well worth the wait, and was greeted with critical acclaim: a freely dramatised portrait of the controversial artist and a powerful mediation on sexuality, criminality and art -a new and refreshing take on the usual biopic.

The film centres on an imagined love-triangle between Caravaggio, his friend and model Ranucdo, and Ranuccio's low-life partner Lena. Conjuring some of the artist's most famous paintings through elaborate and beautifully photographed tableaux vivants, these works are woven into the fabric of the story, providing a starting point for its characters and narrative episodes.

Caravaggio features wonderful performances from Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, and, in her first role, Tilda Swinton, who was to become Jarman's muse and long-time collaborator. A visual treat, it was the first major film production for award-winning costume designer Sandy Powell, with luscious production design by Christopher Hobbs.

Pilot episode and all 15 episodes from Season 1 of the 1970s series set in the 1870s and starring David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a half-Chinese, half-American Shaolin priest, who is roaming the Wild West in search of his missing brother. In the pilot epsiode, 'Kung Fu: The Way of the Tiger, the Sign of the Dragon', Caine runs away from his native China after accidentally killing the Emperor's nephew. He ends up in the American West, where he becomes the champion of the oppressed workers building the transcontinental railroad. Bounty hunters are after Caine in 'King of the Mountain', threatening the safety of a widow and homeless boy Caine has befriended. 'Dark Angel' sees Caine mentoring Serendipity Johnson, a poor preacher who has been blinded by the Indians, and helping him to develop his other senses so that his blindness is less of a handicap. In 'Blood Brother', Caine discovers that the narrow-minded, bigoted residents of a small town have killed a priest of whom they were suspicious and mistrusting. A young woman approaches Caine in 'An Eye for an Eye' to enlist his help with getting revenge on the soldier who raped her. In 'The Tide', Caine relies on the protection of a beautiful and mysterious Chinese girl to protect him from bounty hunters after sustaining serious injuries. 'The Soul is the Warrior' sees Caine encountering a sheriff who is facing imminent death. In 'Nine Lives', Caine meets an Irish miner who has accidentally killed his camp's mascot: a beer-drinking cat. In order to return to work he must find a replacement - and quickly. 'Sun and Cloud Shadow' sees Caine acting as mediator between a small Chinese mining village and a powerful rancher who claims that the mine they are working belongs to him. In 'Chains', Caine finds himself shackled to an angry and bitter man, and teaches him how to control his hatred and be at peace with himself. Jodie Foster, then a relatively unknown child actor, guest stars in 'Alethea' as a young girl who speaks out against Caine, testifying that that she witnessed him shooting a man, after he is put on trial for a murder he did not commit. In 'The Praying Mantis Kills', a young boy defends a jail against the gunmen who killed his father, the sheriff. Caine is captured and forced to labour as a slave in a silver mine in 'Superstition'. The mine then caves in, trapping him and the other miners. 'The Stone' sees Caine get tangled up in an affair involving a priceless diamond, a Brazilian slave, and the three revenge-seeking sons of a woman spurned by her lover. In 'The Third Man', a gambler who has been injured by thieves is then shot by an anonymous gunman. Finally, 'The Ancient Warrior' sees Caine attempting to honour the death wish of an Indian warrior who wants to die at his predestined burial place - which just happens to be in the middle of an Indian-hating community.
