This book includes a foreword by Peter Baker, Chief Executive, The
Men's Health Forum. Male weight problems are a serious public
health issue and can lead to hypertension, hyperlipidaemia,
diabetes and cancer. If current trends continue, the prospect of
the majority of men becoming overweight is a very real one, and
urgent action is imperative. The middle-aged spread that most men
'expect' to develop as they enter into their thirties and forties
is now occurring much earlier with boys and young men developing
life limiting weight problems. This multidisciplinary guide
provides a gender sensitive approach to weight issues. Men need to
be targeted specifically and in a male-focused manner, in order to
overcome the multitude of contributing factors in their weight
gain; social influences, dietary restrictions, education, cultural
expectations, psychological considerations and exercise regime.
This book takes a balanced approach, offering practical guidance as
well as evidence-based research, academic perspectives and personal
experiences. The advice is easy to implement and has been proven in
real-life settings. All healthcare professionals, nutritionists and
dieticians will find the assistance invaluable. It is also highly
recommended for psychologists, counsellors and therapists,
particularly those working with men. Healthcare policy makers and
shapers too, will find much of interest. 'A definitive and seminal
book that will change the way male weight problems are tackled in
the UK and beyond.' - Peter Baker, in the Foreword.
This title contains foreword by Eric Van Furth, President, American
Academy of Eating Disorders. This guide draws together the latest
developments in eating disorders. Together with its companion
volume "Annual Review of Eating Disorders Part 2", this resource
covers the twenty key topics including binge eating, trauma,
self-help, assessment and negative body image. It is a compilation
of reviews from leading scientists and clinicians, and is the
essential update for busy professionals and health researchers,
with a clear emphasis on clinical implications. It also provides
invaluable information for psychologists, psychiatrists,
dieticians, family doctors, pediatricians, counsellors and
educators. 'Very important. Successful. Well respected.
Comprehensive. Appropriate for all clinicians, researchers, and
trainees who work in the area of eating disorders. A great
reference for those needing direction on the current available
treatments.' - Shiela M Dowd, PhD, Rush University Medical Center,
Illinois, USA. 'Presents information in manageable chunks which are
easy to digest. Research is clearly linked to clinical practice.
Easy to read. Helpful. Comprehensive. A valuable resource for new
as well as experienced clinicians.' - Primary Care and Community
Psychiatry. "Last year's Review was very well received, by
researchers and clinicians alike, and I am confident that the same
will be true this year. Keeping track of the latest developments in
the research on eating disorders is a major challenge for all of
us. The abundant information that is now available via journals,
online reference web sites, university databases, and
individualized e-alerts can be so overwhelming that it is difficult
to see the forest trough the trees. Integrating results from
various sources and translating these findings into day-to-day
clinical practice is not easily done. The "Annual Review" truly is
the best way to stay up to date!" - Eric F van Furth, in the
Foreword.
'As well as charting her adolescent battle with anorexia, it offers
a darkly compelling, highly topical account of journeying from
girlhood to womanhood in the spotlight of global celebrity.' The
Mail on Sunday 'A raw and powerful memoir, it shares lessons
banishing self-hatred.' The Sunday Telegraph 'Gradually, I began to
feel this dawning awareness that womanhood was coming for me, that
it was looming inevitably, and it didn't feel safe...' Evanna Lynch
has long been viewed as a role model for people recovering from
anorexia and the story of her casting as Luna Lovegood in the Harry
Potter films has reached almost mythic proportions. Here, in her
fascinating new memoir, Evanna confronts all the complexities and
contradictions within herself and reveals how she overcame a
life-threatening eating disorder, began to conquer her self-hate
and confronted her fear of leaving the neatness and safety of
girlhood for the unpredictable journey of being a woman, all in the
glare of the spotlight of international fame. Delving into the very
heart of a woman's relationship with her own body, Evanna explores
the pivotal moments and choices in her life that led her down the
path of creativity and dreaming and away from the empty pursuit of
perfection, and reaches towards acceptance of the wild, sensual and
unpredictable reality of womanhood. This is a story of the tragedy
and the glory of growing up, of mourning girlhood and stepping into
the unknown, and how that act of courage is the most magical and
creatively liberating thing a woman can do.
Pediatrician Carolyn Roy-Bornstein and her husband had a
comfortably empty nest after their sons had grown and flown. Soon
after, Carolyn noticed that two of her patients struggled after
their father died of cancer and their mother became too mentally
ill to care for them. As a result, they were both placed in foster
care, where one developed a severe eating disorder and the other
began self-harming. In a leap of faith, Carolyn and her husband
opened their home to these sisters and became their foster parents.
Carolyn, despite being a doctor, was unprepared for the harsh
realities of severe anorexia, depression and grueling treatment.
She had worked as a pediatrician for the Department of Children and
Families for years, but still was not equipped for the bureaucratic
struggles she would face to save her youngest foster child from a
brutal eating disorder. This book outlines the struggles of a
fledgling foster family who, despite all odds, remains devoted to
one another throughout the healing process.
