Claire Noble; Introduction by Christine Carpenter
R6,840 Discovery Miles 68 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the second volume in a new series designed to cover the previously-neglected inquisitions post mortem of the fifteenth century between 1422 and 1485. Inquisitions post mortem were compiled with the help of jurors from the area, as a county-by-county record of a deceased individual's land-holdings and associated rights, where the individual held land directly of the crown. It is this explicit connection with land and locality - in terms economic, social, political, and topographical - that makes these documents of comprehensive interest to a broad range of historians and archaeologists. The inclusion of jurors' names and full manorial extents is standard in the new series as is the calendaring of information offered by the associated writs. Analogous documents consist of proofs of age, of particular interest to historians of memory, and assignments of dower. CLAIRE NOBLE is a Research Associate, Faculty of History, University of Cambridge. Academic Director and General Editor: CHRISTINE CARPENTER

The Rise and Fall of Ireland's Celtic Tiger - Liberalism, Boom and Bust (Hardcover, New): Sean O'Riain The Rise and Fall of Ireland's Celtic Tiger - Liberalism, Boom and Bust (Hardcover, New)
Sean O'Riain
R2,343 Discovery Miles 23 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2008 Ireland experienced one of the most dramatic economic crises of any economy in the world. It remains at the heart of the international crisis, sitting uneasily between the US and European economies. Not long ago, however, Ireland was celebrated as an example of successful market-led globalisation and economic growth. How can we explain the Irish crisis? What does it tell us about the causes of the international crisis? How should we rethink our understanding of contemporary economies and the workings of economic liberalism based on the Irish experience? This book combines economic sociology and comparative political economy to analyse the causes, dynamics and implications of Ireland's economic 'boom to bust'. It examines the interplay between the financial system, European integration and Irish national politics to show how financial speculation overwhelmed the economic and social development of the 1990s 'Celtic Tiger'.

The Japanese Central Banking System Compared with Its European and American Counterparts - A New Institutional Economics... The Japanese Central Banking System Compared with Its European and American Counterparts - A New Institutional Economics Approach (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Yoshiharu Oritani; Translated by Kazuyo W. Tanimoto
R3,149 Discovery Miles 31 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book uniquely explores the role and governance mechanism of central banks by applying new institutional economics (NIE). Simultaneously, the book tests the analytical viability of NIE when applied to an organization that has both public and private characteristics. Special attention is paid to the Bank of Japan (BOJ) based on the author's 30 years of work experience and "participant observation" there, touching upon discussion of central bank independence. The book argues that central bank independence cannot be defended solely by law, and a mechanism to eliminate requests from politicians needs to be embedded within the governance structure. The book also provides a comparative analysis between the BOJ and central banks in Europe and the USA. In reviewing the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, it suggests possible measures based on behavioral economics and public choice theory. These theory-based analyses provide useful insights when considering matters such as whether a central bank should issue electronic money or the European system of central banks could be established in Asia.

The Reinterpretation of Italian Economic History - From Unification to the Great War (Paperback): Stefano Fenoaltea The Reinterpretation of Italian Economic History - From Unification to the Great War (Paperback)
Stefano Fenoaltea
R1,250 Discovery Miles 12 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Post-unification Italy was part of a wider world within which men and money circulated freely; it developed to the extent that those mobile resources chose to locate on its soil. The economy's cyclical movements reflected conditions in international financial markets, and were little affected by domestic policies. State intervention restricted the internal and international mobility of goods, and limited Italy's development: it kept the economy weak, reduced Italy's weight in the comity of nations, and paved the way for the frustrations and adventurism that would plunge the twentieth century into world war.

A Japanese Approach to Stages of Capitalist Development - What Comes Next? (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2022): Robert Albritton A Japanese Approach to Stages of Capitalist Development - What Comes Next? (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2022)
Robert Albritton
R1,709 Discovery Miles 17 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a novel treatment of one of the most important and long-standing research agendas in critical political economy: the theorizing of stages of capitalist development. Albritton advances the work of Japanese economist, Kozo Uno, to explore capital accumulation and its ideological, legal and political supports, not only in the stages of mercantilism, liberalism and imperialism, but also in the post-World War II capitalist stage of consumerism. The power of Albritton's adoption of this Japanese approach resides in the crisp clarity it achieves over the way stage theorizing of capitalism draws on both economic theory and historical analysis. In the new, fully revised edition, written with Richard Westra, two new chapters are added. One meticulously examines the tendencies of capitalism euphemized as globalization and financialization which followed the crisis of the stage of consumerism. The other deals with current threats to civilization posed by burgeoning militarism, environmental destruction and climate apocalypse. The concluding chapter argues for the necessity of major social change to ensure a liveable future for humanity. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of political economy and the history of economic thought, as well as a wider audience interested in the transformation and crises of capitalism.

Robert Leeson
R2,988 Discovery Miles 29 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the eighth volume in this Collaborative Biography, which explores the life and works of Nobel Prize-winning economist F.A. Hayek (1899-1992). Making extensive use of archival material and Hayek's own published writings, it presents a strong challenge to perceptions of the economist's life and thought. In this volume, chapters canvas subjects such as the relationship between the Austrian School of Economics and the Cold War, the Hapsburg Empire, and the overthrow (or planned overthrow) of democracy in a variety of countries, with a view to examining the process by which economics is constructed and disseminated.

Contesting Malaysia's Integration into the World Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Rajah Rasiah, Azirah Hashim, Jatswan... Contesting Malaysia's Integration into the World Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Rajah Rasiah, Azirah Hashim, Jatswan S. Sidhu
R2,435 Discovery Miles 24 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book brings together a set of incisive essays that interrogate Malaysian history and social relations which began during pre-colonial times, and extended to colonial and post-colonial Malaysia. It addresses economic misinterpretations of the role of markets in the way colonial industrialisation evolved, the nature of exploitation of workers, and the participation of local actors in shaping a wide range of socioeconomic and political processes. In doing so, it takes the lead from the innovative historian, Shaharil Talib Robert who argued that the recrafting of history should go beyond the use of conventional methodologies and analytic techniques. It is in that tradition that the chapters offer a semblance of causality, contingency, contradictions, and connections. With that, the analysis in each chapter utilises approaches appropriate for the topics chosen, which include history, anthropology, sociology, economics, politics, and international relations. The collection of chapters also offer novel interpretations to contest and fill gaps that have not been addressed in past works. The book is essential reading for history students, and those interested in Malaysian history in particular.

Martin Kitchen
R3,236 Discovery Miles 32 360 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1976 and based upon the extensive use of original archival material, this book provides a detailed account of the 2 years in which the German army enjoyed unprecedented power and influence. The rise of Hindenburg and Ludendorff is seen against the background of the failure of the army to win a decisive victory in the early stages of the war. The book provides insights into the dynamics of German militarism and imperialism, and is an important contribution to the discussion of the continuity of German history.

The Field and the Forge - Population, Production, and Power in the Pre-industrial West (Hardcover): John Landers The Field and the Forge - Population, Production, and Power in the Pre-industrial West (Hardcover)
John Landers
R2,819 Discovery Miles 28 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Field and the Forge offers an innovative approach to the pre-industrial history of Europe and the Mediterranean basin from Roman times through to the Industrial Revolution. This wide-ranging analysis demonstrates how technology changed the scope of state and empire building, and explores why this scope was realized in the ancient world rather than the medieval west. This work not only considers the who and what of history, but provides a clear demonstration of why things happened.

From Artisan to Worker - Guilds, the French State, and the Organization of Labor, 1776-1821 (Paperback): Michael P. Fitzsimmons From Artisan to Worker - Guilds, the French State, and the Organization of Labor, 1776-1821 (Paperback)
Michael P. Fitzsimmons
R1,248 Discovery Miles 12 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From Artisan to Worker examines the largely overlooked debate over the potential reestablishment of guilds that occurred from 1776 to 1821. The abolition of guilds in 1791 overturned an organization of labor that had been in place for centuries. The disorder that ensued - from concerns about the safety of the food supply to a general decline in the quality of goods - raised strong doubts about their abolition and sparked a debate both inside and outside of government that went on for decades. The issue of the reestablishment of guilds, however, subsequently became intertwined with the growing mechanization of production. Under the Napoleonic regime, the government considered several projects to restore guilds in a large-scale fashion, but the counterargument that guilds could impede mechanization prevailed. After Bonaparte's fall, the restored Bourbon dynasty was expected to reorganize guilds, but its sponsorship of an industrial exhibition in 1819 signaled its endorsement of mechanization, and after 1821 there were no further efforts to restore guilds during the Restoration.

Moralizing Capitalism - Agents, Discourses and Practices of Capitalism and Anti-Capitalism in the Modern Age (Hardcover, 1st... Moralizing Capitalism - Agents, Discourses and Practices of Capitalism and Anti-Capitalism in the Modern Age (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Stefan Berger, Alexandra Przyrembel
R3,357 Discovery Miles 33 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book adds a crucial focus on morality to the growing literature on the history of capitalism by exploring social and cultural perspectives on the economic order that has dominated the modern world. Taking the study beyond narrow economic confines, it traces the entanglement between moral sentiments and capitalism, examining both moral critiques and moral justifications. Company bankruptcies, systems of taxation, wealth, and the running of stock exchanges were attacked on moral grounds, while ideas of economic justice and the humanization of capitalism loomed large over moral critiques. Many movements, from antislavery to labour campaigns, were inspired by aspirations to improve capitalism and halt the moral decay that was felt to have affected large sections of society. This book questions how moral sentiments are defined and have changed over time, and how these relate to both capitalism and anti-capitalism. Covering a range of different social movements and ethical issues, the 13 chapters present a moral history of capitalism, understood not simply as an economic system but as an order that encompasses all areas of modern life.

Modern Global Trade and the Asian Regional Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Tomoko Shiroyama Modern Global Trade and the Asian Regional Economy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Tomoko Shiroyama
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume undertakes the important task of envisioning a regional history of Asia based on its unique internal characteristics, going beyond the usual West/non-West dichotomy. The "regional trade zone of modern Asia" was debated in the 1980s. Since then, Japanese historians of the socioeconomic history of Asia have explored how the traditional trade relations that had developed over the centuries in Asia responded to the so-called Western impacts in the mid-nineteenth century, including the opening of ports and tariff reduction under free trade regimes and the advance in transportation technology. Against this academic background, the four chapters in this volume examine how overseas Chinese, some of the key actors in regional and local trade, dealt with their Western counterparts, and how Asian commodities penetrated other parts of the world through the newly created web of global commerce. The book reviews discuss theoretical issues to explore various connections among and comparisons of the economies in the region. This volume provides readers with critical insights into the Asian region in the past and present by investigating the long-term trajectory of its linkages to the global economy.

Time and Space - Latin American Regional Development in Historical Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Daniel A.... Time and Space - Latin American Regional Development in Historical Perspective (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Daniel A. Tirado-Fabregat, Marc Badia-Miro, Henry Willebald
R3,833 Discovery Miles 38 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This edited collection examines the evolution of regional inequality in Latin America in the long run. The authors support the hypothesis that the current regional disparities are principally the result of a long and complex process in which historical, geographical, economic, institutional, and political factors have all worked together. Lessons from the past can aid current debates on regional inequalities, territorial cohesion, and public policies in developing and also developed countries. In contrast with European countries, Latin American economies largely specialized in commodity exports, showed high levels of urbanization and high transports costs (both domestic and international). This new research provides a new perspective on the economic history of Latin American regions and offers new insights on how such forces interact in peripheral countries. In that sense, natural resources, differences in climatic conditions, industrial backwardness and low population density areas leads us to a new set of questions and tentative answers. This book brings together a group of leading American and European economic historians in order to build a new set of data on historical regional GDPs for nine Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. This transnational perspective on Latin American economic development process is of interest to researchers, students and policy makers.

Henry George and How Growth in Real Estate Contributes to Inequality and Financial Instability (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019):... Henry George and How Growth in Real Estate Contributes to Inequality and Financial Instability (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Edward Nell
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This Palgrave Pivot contextualizes Henry George as an important and uniquely American figure in the fields of economics and political economy, with special emphasis on the frontier and innovation. This book discusses George's concept of rent as the result of economic progress, explains George's argument that the rise in rents caused by economic progress in turn generates inequality and poverty, and examines the relevance of these ideas in today's financialized global economy. This book adds to the very necessary discussion of whether our current financial industry is a benefit or a drain on human economic well-being.

Historical Foundations of Globalization (Hardcover): James Foreman-Peck Historical Foundations of Globalization (Hardcover)
James Foreman-Peck
R13,059 Discovery Miles 130 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume offers an impressive collection of scholarly papers which investigate the historical foundations of globalisation before 1945. The book explores the effects of the nineteenth century technologies of the railway, the telegraph and the steamship which promoted the globalisation process by boosting trade across frontiers and triggering migration of labour and flows of capital to the temperate areas of agriculture. The colonial empires, in particular the British Empire, facilitated the process, as the integration of capital markets and monetary systems and methods of business organization followed trade and labour. The volume also covers the time between the wars, when impediments to trade, migration and currency movements increased and led to a period of deglobalization and divergence.

Diversity of Experimental Methods in Economics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Toshiji Kawagoe, Hirokazu Takizawa Diversity of Experimental Methods in Economics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Toshiji Kawagoe, Hirokazu Takizawa
R2,886 Discovery Miles 28 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first book that examines the diverse range of experimental methods currently being used in the social sciences, gathering contributions by working economists engaged in experimentation, as well as by a political scientist, psychologists and philosophers of the social sciences. Until the mid-twentieth century, most economists believed that experiments in the economic sciences were impossible. But that's hardly the case today, as evinced by the fact that Vernon Smith, an experimental economist, and Daniel Kahneman, a behavioral economist, won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002. However, the current use of experimental methods in economics is more diverse than is usually assumed. As the concept of experimentation underwent considerable abstraction throughout the twentieth century, the areas of the social sciences in which experiments are applied are expanding, creating renewed interest in, and multifaceted debates on, the way experimental methods are used. This book sheds new light on the diversity of experimental methodologies used in the social sciences. The topics covered include historical insights into the evolution of experimental methods; the necessary "performativity" of experiments, i.e., the dynamic interaction with the social contexts in which they are embedded; the application of causal inferences in the social sciences; a comparison of laboratory, field, and natural experiments; and the recent use of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in development economics. Several chapters also deal with the latest heated debates, such as those concerning the use of the random lottery method in laboratory experiments.
