Craig Heimbuch was in his early thirties when he received a gift from his father - a 12-gauge Winchester over-under shotgun. Craig had never even thought of owning a gun, but the gift got him thinking; the men in his Midwestern family were enthusiastic hunters, and he, the black sheep so to speak, was possibly the only one never to have taken an animal. For most of his life, he was quite comfortable with that, but now that he had a shotgun, Craig figured he may as well try it out and in so doing, both explore the meaning of manhood and get closer to his Midwestern dad. So Craig committed to overcoming his domesticated suburban lifestyle by diving headfirst into hunting culture for a year, with the ambition of [successfully] participating in the annual Heimbuch family pheasant hunt. He would learn what putting food on the table used to entail, what it means to be a man in America, and, perhaps most importantly, better understand his family legacy. In the tradition of Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and A.J. Jacobs's "The Know-It-All", Heimbuch's "And Now We Shall Do Manly Things" takes a wry look at some of our most deeply-cherished cultural beliefs and encourages men to reassess their definitions of manhood. During his journey he discovers it is possible to be an active father, loving spouse, and hunter, without being mistaken for a gun-toting lunatic.

The National Book League was a precursor to the current Booktrust, and was set up in 1924 by the Society of Bookmen in order to promote reading, particularly among the young. To that end, the NBL issued Reader's Guides on a variety of subjects, each written by an author with expertise in that field and containing an annotated bibliography of recommended titles on the subject. Arthur Ransome was a keen fisherman as well as a famous children's author, and fishing and other outdoor pursuits feature often in his books. This Reader's Guide was published in 1955 and features Ransome's recommendations for books on fishing, broken down by varieties of fish and fishing practices.
To restore men's rightful heritage, Denis Boyles and Gregg Stebben, the coauthors of A Man's Life: The Complete Instructions, have compiled a priceless treasury of forgotten lore and rustic hobbies that our forefathers possessed but that we have lost. Culled from turn-of-the-century publications and old scouting-type manuals, this guide is written in our grandfathers' language, with their sensibility and wisdom. Since the outdoors is one place where almost all good advice is old advice, the focus is on a man's life lived outdoors camping, hunting, and fishing. With these instructions and advice, man can once again learn how to build a fly fishing rod, shoot a rifle with both eyes open, hit a flying target, start a fire without matches, travel light - but right, keep cool when lost, splice a rope, catch a pig, predict the weather from the color of the sky, rescue someone drowning, send a smoke signal, track a bobcat or a moose, build a log cabin, buy and sort fishing hooks, make a canoe, choose the perfect tent, plan a one-day hike, play golf on a five-acre meadow ... and much, much more. With its mix of essential and extraordinary vintage wisdom, The Lost Lore of a Man's Life is a must for every man's back pocket and backpack.
Learn the switch cast, single spey, double spey, snake roll, snap T, and devon switch, and now the skagit cast The efficient way for anglers to catch fish--including trout, striped bass, salmon, and steelhead--on big, moving waters No other cast is more graceful, or more fun to learn, than the spey cast. Champion spey caster Simon Gawesworth teaches the casts, some of which he developed himself, all of which he has mastered as an angler and instructor. Revised and updated to include the latest trends, this new edition has a completely new chapter on skagit casting, a remarkably easy way to lift the largest flies and lines with the fastest sinking tips from the water--this cast is ideal for tight backcasting situations.
John Gierach is a highly trusted and trustable opinion-maker in fly-fishing. People take what he says to the bank. While most of Gierach's writing is essay-style and reflective, here he gets down to the nitty-gritty: how he ties his favorite flies and why he thinks they work so well for him. There is, thus, an instant reader connection: "Gierach's patterns are good enough for me." Few anglers will skip knowing what a master angler and thinker prefers for his fly box. This title covers a gamut of patterns essential to trout fishing in a variety of circumstances: dry flies, wet flies and nymphs, and streamers. Gierach's legion of fans of his regular magazine column will be highly inclined to buy this title.

'Kit Fielding's debut is a triumph. A story told with brutal honesty, underpinned by humour, love, hope and the inestimable power of friendship.' RUTH HOGAN, author of The Keeper of Lost Things In every pub in every town unspoken stories lie beneath the surface. Each week, six women meet at The Bluebell Inn. They form an unlikely and occasionally triumphant ladies darts team. They banter and jibe, they laugh. But their hidden stories of love and loss are what, in the end, will bind them. There is Mary, full of it but cradling her dark secret; Lena - young and bold, she has made her choice; the cat woman who must return to the place of her birth before it's too late. There's Maggie, still laying out the place for her husband; and Pegs, the dark-eyed girl from the travellers' site bringing her strangeness and first love. And Katy: unappreciated. Open to an offer. They know little of each other's lives. But here they gather and weave a delicate and sustaining connection that maybe they can rely on as the crossroads on their individual paths threaten to overwhelm. With humanity and insight, Kit Fielding reveals the great love that lies at the heart of female friendship. Raw, funny and devastating, all of life can be found at the Bluebell.
Booger Bottom, in rural Georgia, has no road signs, no stoplights, no stores. Nobody knows how it got its name, whether from the mythical booger--part panther, part wild dog--that is rumored to have roamed there, or from the Feds ("boogers") who raided local moonshine stills during Prohibition. Today Booger Bottom's most famous product is Michael Waddell, one of the world's most accomplished hunters. Growing up in this wild land near the Chattahoochee River, Waddell was blessed with two great gifts: a wonderful father who stoked his passion for hunting, and endless time in which to pursue it. He eventually left the backwoods of Georgia to stalk elk, moose, caribou, wildebeest, eland, and everything in between, from Alaska to Africa. Mixing Waddell's best hunting stories with hilarious anecdotes about the people he's met along the way, "Hunting Booger Bottom" is a must-read for anyone who has ever wandered into the woods with "a stick and a string."
Readers familiar with Randy Wayne White's "Out There" column in Outside magazine will relish this first collection of his best work; those new to White's delectable blend of adventure, hilarity, and spirit can only be envied for the satisfaction of that first encounter. Whether it's `This Dog Is Legend," in which he tells of his cinder-block-retrieving Chesapeake Bay retriever named Gator, or "Coming To America," about the stirring-and sometimes terrifying-Mariel boat lift, White never fails to engross us in a life of sun, boats, work, and sport.

This book is about the author's life motivated by two pursuits: medicine, his profession and flyfishing, his favourite recreation. Each in their own way has provided him with challenges, enjoyment and fulfilment. The book recounts the author's experiences as a wartime school boy, post-war medical student, army doctor in Ghana, and medical research worker at Hammersmith Hospital, London, the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, the Methodist Hospital, Houston and McGill University, Montreal. It describes his drastic change in mid-career from gastroenterology to clinical lipidology and his subsequent efforts to promote the lipid hypothesis of atherosclerosis in the face of entrenched opposition from some members of the cardiological establishment. Among his achievements was the introduction of plasmapheresis to prolong the lives of severely affected patients with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), a hitherto fatal disorder, and he was among the first to describe the efficacy of statins in FH patients in the UK. The book also describes his leisure time activities including running in the London and New York marathons, and the hazards thereof, and his flyfishing expeditions to catch Atlantic salmon in Scotland and Russia, bonefish in the Bahamas and brown trout in England. The narrative covers the period from the Second World War to the present day, during which there have been dramatic changes in medical practice and social attitudes. It reflects the author's experiences during the latter half of the 20th century, stretching from the early days of penicillin to the introduction of statins, and it concludes with his up to date appraisal of recent and exciting advances in cholesterol-lowering therapy for cardiovascular disease.

Our bodies are capable of so much more than what we ask of them. Take off the mental handcuffs, get out there, and start on your way today. What is your passion? You can become better at it. Committing yourself to fitness only fuels your beliefs. You gotta believe to achieve. Cameron Hanes discovered his true passion for bowhunting when he was twenty. Inspired by the physical challenges of stalking elk in the Oregon wilderness--traversing mountainous terrain, braving erratic weather, and evading his quarry's even more dangerous predators--he began an ever-evolving journey of self-improvement. To become the best bowhunter of wild elk, to the caliber he believed he could be, Cam realized he would need more than archery skills. He would need the stamina and strength that could only come from an athletic training regimen of long-distance running and heavy-weight lifting. And every day for more than thirty years, Cam has put in the work, building miles and muscles, pushing through pain with a single-minded focus on the only goal worth having--besting himself time and again. Part memoir, part motivational manifesto, Endure reveals how Cam--a self-professed average guy--put himself through the paces to live the life of an expert bowhunter, respected writer, and family man. With discipline, sacrifice, resilience, a hard work ethic, and a belief in his own capabilities, Cam not only accomplished his dreams but continues to surpass them. There is no secret to his success except relentless determination and loyal dedication to his own self-worth. If Cam can do it, we all can.
