Killer Triggers (Paperback): Joe Kenda Killer Triggers (Paperback)
Joe Kenda
R425 R364 Discovery Miles 3 640 Save R61 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Killer Triggers, Joe Kenda, star of Discovery’s Homicide Hunter, reflects on past homicide cases and examines the triggers of what led to the crime. Discovering even the most placid and peaceful of us have a potential for violence, Joe elucidates just how once our trigger is pulled, consequences become immaterial.

The most common triggers for homicide are fear, rage, revenge, money, lust, and, more rarely, sheer madness. This isn't an exact science, of course. Any given murder can have multiple triggers. Sex and revenge seem to be common partners in crime. Rage, money, and revenge make for a dangerous trifecta of triggers, as well.

This book offers my memories of homicide cases that I investigated or oversaw. In each case, I examine the trigger that led to death. I chose this theme for the book because even though the why of a murder case may not be critical in an investigation, it can sometimes lead us to the killer.

And even if we solve a case without knowing the trigger, the why still intrigues us, disrupting our dreams and lingering in our minds, perhaps because each of us fears the demons that lie within our own psyche -- the triggers waiting to be pulled.

Forensics - The Anatomy of Crime (Paperback, Main): Val McDermid Forensics - The Anatomy of Crime (Paperback, Main)
Val McDermid 1
R358 R269 Discovery Miles 2 690 Save R89 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The dead talk. To the right listener, they tell us all about themselves: where they came from, how they lived, how they died - and who killed them. Forensic scientists can unlock the mysteries of the past and help justice to be done using the messages left by a corpse, a crime scene or the faintest of human traces. Forensics draws on interviews with top-level professionals, ground-breaking research and Val McDermid's own experience to lay bare the secrets of this fascinating science. And, along the way, she wonders at how maggots collected from a corpse can help determine time of death, how a DNA trace a millionth the size of a grain of salt can be used to convict a killer and how a team of young Argentine scientists led by a maverick American anthropologist uncovered the victims of a genocide. In her novels, McDermid has been solving complex crimes and confronting unimaginable evil for years. Now, she's looking at the people who do it for real. It's a journey that will take her to war zones, fire scenes and autopsy suites, and bring her into contact with extraordinary bravery and wickedness, as she traces the history of forensics from its earliest beginnings to the cutting-edge science of the modern day.

Cyber Forensics - Examining Emerging and Hybrid Technologies (Paperback): Albert J. Marcella Cyber Forensics - Examining Emerging and Hybrid Technologies (Paperback)
Albert J. Marcella
R1,347 Discovery Miles 13 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Threat actors, be they cyber criminals, terrorists, hacktivists or disgruntled employees, are employing sophisticated attack techniques and anti-forensics tools to cover their attacks and breach attempts. As emerging and hybrid technologies continue to influence daily business decisions, the proactive use of cyber forensics to better assess the risks that the exploitation of these technologies pose to enterprise-wide operations is rapidly becoming a strategic business objective. This book moves beyond the typical, technical approach to discussing cyber forensics processes and procedures. Instead, the authors examine how cyber forensics can be applied to identifying, collecting, and examining evidential data from emerging and hybrid technologies, while taking steps to proactively manage the influence and impact, as well as the policy and governance aspects of these technologies and their effect on business operations. A world-class team of cyber forensics researchers, investigators, practitioners and law enforcement professionals have come together to provide the reader with insights and recommendations into the proactive application of cyber forensic methodologies and procedures to both protect data and to identify digital evidence related to the misuse of these data. This book is an essential guide for both the technical and non-technical executive, manager, attorney, auditor, and general practitioner who is seeking an authoritative source on how cyber forensics may be applied to both evidential data collection and to proactively managing today's and tomorrow's emerging and hybrid technologies. The book will also serve as a primary or supplemental text in both under- and post-graduate academic programs addressing information, operational and emerging technologies, cyber forensics, networks, cloud computing and cybersecurity.

Forensic Forestry - A Guidebook for Foresters on the Witness Stand (Paperback): Robert P. Latham Forensic Forestry - A Guidebook for Foresters on the Witness Stand (Paperback)
Robert P. Latham
R1,734 Discovery Miles 17 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Forensic Forestry: A Guidebook for Foresters on the Witness Stand is a one-of-a-kind, hands-on resource for those forestry and land use professionals called upon to work on legal cases and testify in court. Land use and forestry issues in the United States, in particular-and likewise around the world-have become increasingly contentious, scrutinized, and debated. There is little to suggest that conflicts over forestlands will cease in the near future, in fact, quite the opposite. There are already a number of informative books available on land use and forestry, and related issues under the broader heading of environmental science. As such, while this book will not go into these concepts in detail, if someone is already an expert in land use and forestry, this book will tell them the ins and outs of the legal system and how they can best serve to make a case, using evidence, in a court of law. Coverage addresses the necessary background, and legwork involved, in providing technical expertise for such cases to be adjudicated. Since professionals' expertise is often focused on ecological issues, chapters look at the economic factors and how money, policy, and corporate interests come into play-the crux of where the professional forester's ability to present evidence and expertise becomes critical. The author provides an overall understanding of the courts, and the legal process. Coverage includes recommendations to professionals working on cases-and in the courtroom-in how to present evidence and testify in cases over land use and forestland rights, forestry management and safety, criminal and civil cases in liability in forest fires-among myriad others. Key Features: A book by a professional for professionals in the field of forestry and those called to testify in cases of forest and wildfires, eminent domain, land disputes, tort, and liability cases Written in easy-to-read, non-technical jargon to provide tools to best serve as an expert witness and consultant to support attorneys in civil and criminal cases Details unique, real-world cases study examples, detailing how they were adjudicated based on evidence and testimony provided Presents a legal background into the court system, courtroom procedure, the types of legal cases as they relate to forensic forestry As such, Forensic Forestry is a welcome addition to those professionals called upon to consult on, and testify in, such cases including land use professionals, foresters and forestry managers, ecologists, environmentalists, environmental policy advocates, and those in related fields.

Terrorist Profiling and Law Enforcement - Detection, Prevention, Deterrence (Paperback): Noel McGuirk Terrorist Profiling and Law Enforcement - Detection, Prevention, Deterrence (Paperback)
Noel McGuirk
R1,217 Discovery Miles 12 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book analyses the usefulness of terrorist profiling utilised by law enforcement officers as a pre-emptive means to assist them in the detection, prevention and deterrence of terrorism and/or its preparatory activities. It explores two main themes arising from the phenomenon of terrorist profiling: the lawfulness of terrorist profiling and the utility of profiling. These two themes are explored in three separate parts. Firstly, the book begins by drawing upon human rights concerns arising from the use of terrorist profiling by law enforcement officers. Secondly, an analytical framework capable of making determinations on the usefulness of terrorist profiling. This framework develops a profiling spectrum that ranges from formal and informal manifestations of terrorist profiling that forms the basis for evaluating its usefulness. Finally, the book presents an examination of various manifestations of terrorist profiling by separating the analysis of the 'construction' of profiles on the one hand, from their 'application,' on the other, so as to be able to identify and examine profiling's usefulness as a technique to assist law enforcement officers make predictions about likely offender characteristics. This book ultimately concludes that terrorist profiling should only be conducted by undertaking a systematic assessment of the construction of profiles separate from the application of profiles whilst simultaneously taking into account fundamental human rights concerns with the practice of terrorist profiling. The work will be an essential resource for academics, law enforcement officers and lawyers in the disciplines of law, criminology, human rights, criminal justice and policing. As the book engages with terrorist profiling, it will also be of interest to those engaged in the psychology of terrorism.

Wildfire Arson Prevention Guide (Hardcover): Richard Woods Wildfire Arson Prevention Guide (Hardcover)
Richard Woods
R3,580 Discovery Miles 35 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Wildfire arson is often considered an impossible crime to solve. Likewise, offenders frequently consider themselves undetectable. And many agencies often do not have the specialist skills necessary to investigate those responsible for serial wildfire ignitions. As such, perpetrators continue to light fires with little to no likelihood of being caught. An ongoing series of deliberately lit wildfires can result in significant financial and environmental consequences and put life and property at risk. This Wildlife Arson Prevention Guide provides law enforcement, land management and fire agency investigators with frameworks, strategies, and tactics-that can be adopted to address deliberate wildfire ignitions in their jurisdiction. Often this crime is automatically given to law enforcement agencies to solve in isolation, whereas a collaborative approach across key agencies has proven essential in apprehending offenders. This valuable guidebook fills a void in the literature, detailing a collaborative approach through the adoption of successful best practice investigation techniques. Many may be applicable to-and better serve-smaller rural communities, while others can be adopted in more populated wildfire prone areas. The book recognises that some small rural agencies may have less capacity to address the issue and may need to modify the recommended methods; ideally, the text encourages the establishment of collaborative arrangements to work with larger or adjoining agencies, to help solve their serial wildfire arson cases. The book highlights successfully adopted measures that can be embraced by key agencies who have a responsibility in wildfire ignition prevention. Currently, no similar all-encompassing handbook exists to guide agencies to address this growing worldwide problem. The strategies and tactics are presented in a format that can be easily aligned to jurisdictions within countries that are at risk of wildfire. The commonly recognised motives behind wildfire arson are detailed to provide agency investigators a background to this often-misunderstood offence. The Wildlife Arson Prevention Guide provides the tools that will help authorities to identify those responsible and result in stronger, safer communities.

'Indecently entertaining.' A Daily Mail Book of the Week An Amazon US Best Book of 2022 'A fascinating tale of poisons and poisonous deeds which both educates and entertains.' - Kathy Reichs As any reader of murder mysteries can tell you, poison is one of the most enduring - and popular - weapons of choice for a scheming murderer. It can be slipped into a drink, smeared onto the tip of an arrow or the handle of a door, even filtered through the air we breathe. But how exactly do these poisons work to break our bodies down, and what can we learn from the damage they inflict? In a fascinating blend of popular science, medical history, and narrative crime nonfiction, Dr Neil Bradbury explores this most morbidly captivating method of murder from a cellular level. Alongside real-life accounts of murderers and their crimes -some notorious, some forgotten, some still unsolved - are the equally compelling stories of the poisons involved: eleven molecules of death that work their way through the human body and, paradoxically, illuminate the way in which our bodies function. Drawn from historical records and current news headlines, A Taste for Poison weaves together the fascinating tales of spurned lovers, shady scientists, medical professionals and political assassins, showing how the precise systems of the body can be impaired to lethal effect through the use of poison. From the deadly origins of the gin & tonic cocktail to the arsenic-laced wallpaper in Napoleon's bedroom, A Taste for Poison leads readers on a fascinating tour of the intricate, complex systems that keep us alive - or don't.
