Benign Anorectal Disorders - A Guide to Diagnosis and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Nisar Ahmad Chowdri, Fazl Q. Parray Benign Anorectal Disorders - A Guide to Diagnosis and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Nisar Ahmad Chowdri, Fazl Q. Parray
R4,597 Discovery Miles 45 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Management of benign anorectal disorders is challenging for the treating surgeons as the patients are highly distressed, the symptoms are always alarming, and surgical intervention may be associated with lifelong disabilities such as loss of sphincter control. Written by highly experienced colorectal surgeons, this book provides detailed notes on optimal management of these disorders including pre- and post-operative management. Chapters cover the entire range of benign disorders such as hemorrhoids, fissure, fistula-in-ano, anorectal injuries, anal incontinence, rectal prolapse, pelvic floor disorders, benign tumors and ulcers, and strictures. Chapters on surgical anatomy and physiology equip the surgeons with the information necessary to understand the complex anatomy and functioning of this region which makes surgery all the more difficult. Benign Anorectal Disorders is an essential reading for colorectal surgeons, general surgeons, fellows-in-training and the post-graduate students.

Carol E.H. Scott-Conner, Andreas M. Kaiser, Ninh T Nguyen, Umut Sarpel, Sonia L. Sugg
R4,786 Discovery Miles 47 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This fifth edition of Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery is a major revision that strives to remain faithful to the purpose and tone of Dr. Chassin's original text. This unique textbook provides an emphasis on surgical strategy that is unmatched by other textbooks of surgical technique. The text explains the conceptual basis of each operation, outlines strategies to avoid common pitfalls, and carefully describes and beautifully illustrates the technical steps of each operation. The fifth edition preserves the unique qualities of its previous edition while providing a comprehensive update. This updated volume also features a vast amount of richly detailed artwork and operative photographs, which help depict operative techniques step-by-step. No other text so successfully combines operative technique with the concept of strategy - that is, key governing principles that dictate safe surgery and avoidance of complications. There are books of technique, there are books about complications, and there are books about the rationale involved in the treatment of various kinds of surgical pathology. Chassin's combines all three. Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery: An Expositive Atlas Fifth Edition comprehensively covers all non-vascular operations commonly performed by general surgeons. This edition expands this comprehensive general surgery reference while remaining true to the special character of the work. The revision expands upon procedures not covered in the previous edition and incorporates new techniques into many other chapters.

Jorge Albores-Saavedra, Donald Earl Henson, David S. Klimstra
R5,105 Discovery Miles 51 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The current edition contains new information accumulated during the last ten years on tumours and tumour-like lesions of the gallbladder, extrahepatic bile ducts and Vaterian system. Because of the increasing number of laparoscopic cholecystectomies and Whipple procedures performed, surgical pathologists now have the opportunity to examine more cancer precursors, early cancers, and adenomas of the gallbladder, extrahepatic bile ducts and ampulla of Vater than previously. These lesions are discussed in detail and profusely illustrated. Likewise, lesions that closely simulate malignant neoplasms are also described and illustrated. Also included are the giant cell neoplasms and the gastrointestinal stromal tumours as well as the new subtypes of carcinomas such as large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas and adenocarcinomas with pyloric gland or foveolar phenotype. The role of immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis of a wide variety of neoplasms is emphasised as well. This book will be a great resource to practicing pathologists and students for years to come.

Sharon L. Stein, Regan R. Lawson
R2,429 Discovery Miles 24 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is designed specifically to help equip new surgeons with the anatomical and technical knowledge to supplement hands on experience in minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery. There are multiple colorectal surgeries which distinctly lend themselves to the use of the laparoscopic approach. To assist the junior surgeon who is embarking on a career in surgery, expert surgeons and educators in the field of colon and rectal surgery from around the country authored the chapters included in this book. Chapters describe key elements of each surgery, including the order of surgery, when and how the surgeon created tension, rotated the patient, and optimized flow of the surgery. Chapters also contain tips and pitfalls that are not always explicitly presented when describing a surgical approach in order to provide readers with a diverse toolkit. Each chapter is also full of new illustrations that show the direction of traction, the line of dissection, and the anatomy of the colon. The illustrations also present tools in a color-coded format to clearly distinguish between the surgeon's and the assistant's tools. Laparoscopic Colectomy: A Step by Step Guide is a valuable resource to residents and junior attendings who wish to master laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery.

Liane S Feldman, Conor P. Delaney, Olle Ljungqvist, Francesco Carli
R3,147 Discovery Miles 31 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume presents a comprehensive, up to date and practical approach to creating an ERAS program for GI surgery. The first sections review the evidence underlying individual elements of ERAS, including evidence from laparoscopic procedures when available or pointing to evidence gaps where more research is required. These are written by experts in the field, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and physiotherapists. The format is in the style of a narrative review, with narrative evidence review, and concluding with a table with "take home messages" and 3-5 key references for readers interested in more depth in each topic. Each chapter also addresses management of common complications and patient selection or exceptions. Subsequent chapters address practical concerns, including creation of a pathway team, project management and engaging administration. Experts contribute real-world examples of their pathways for a variety of procedures, including colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery, upper GI and hepatobiliary surgery, enabling the user to have a starting point for creating their own programs. The SAGES Manual of Enhanced Recovery Programs for Gastrointestinal Surgery will be of great value to fully trained surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and administrators interested in initiating an ERAS program.

Emergency laparoscopic surgery in the elderly and frail patient (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Ferdinando Agresta, Mauro Podda,... Emergency laparoscopic surgery in the elderly and frail patient (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Ferdinando Agresta, Mauro Podda, Fabio Cesare Campanile, Carlo Bergamini, Gabriele Anania
R5,227 Discovery Miles 52 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The global population is aging rapidly, and as a result emergency abdominal surgery for acute abdomen in the elderly has become a global issue. Demographic changes in the population have also altered the profile of emergency abdominal surgery, with typical causes of acute abdomen in the elderly including acute cholecystitis, incarcerated hernia, bowel obstruction and appendicitis. In these patients, recovery from surgery is often complicated, leading to longer hospital stays compared with younger patients. Laparoscopy in the emergency setting is well established and offers a number of advantages over open surgical approaches, such as reduced postoperative pain, length of hospital stay and complication rates. While laparoscopic surgery for acute diverticulitis has become more widespread, in other conditions, like small bowel obstruction and perforated peptic ulcer, laparotomy is still used in about 70% of cases. Further, despite the urgent need for knowledge regarding surgical treatment of acute abdomen in the elderly, there is still a lack of evidence in this relevant clinical field. This book analyzes the management strategies and critically evaluates the outcomes of laparoscopic emergency surgery for acute abdomen in the elderly according to the principles of evidence-based medicine. Discussing each topic clearly, and promoting the use of emergency laparoscopy in elderly patients, the book is intended for young general surgeons and surgeons in training with at least a basic knowledge of surgery for acute abdomen. It is also useful as a quick reference tool during on-call shifts.

Acing the IBD Questions on the GI Board Exam - The Ultimate Crunch-Time Resource (Paperback): Brennan Spiegel, Hetal Karsan Acing the IBD Questions on the GI Board Exam - The Ultimate Crunch-Time Resource (Paperback)
Brennan Spiegel, Hetal Karsan
R4,357 Discovery Miles 43 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The world of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) knowledge is vast. Within that world is a sub-set of knowledge that is especially important for everyday clinical care. And a sub-set of that is testable for the Board exam. The testable material includes time-honoured, locked-in-stone, mostly uncontroversial facts that have withstood the test of time. The answer to your study questions (and reduction of your study time!) can be found inside Acing the IBD Questions on the GI Board Exam: The Ultimate Crunch-Time Resource. Until now, there has been no single, slim, but high-yield volume that summarises the IBD you really need to know for the board exams, preparing for rounds, or just plain read. The authors have collected every pearl of wisdom, high-yield factlet, IBD ""Board buzzword"", micrograph, and classic imaging study they could muster, all while keeping Acing the IBD Questions on the GI Board Exam: The Ultimate Crunch-Time Resource a manageable size. In today's fast-paced world it is hard to keep up with the burgeoning IBD literature. Traditional textbooks usually feature long and detailed discussions that don't directly address board and recertification exams. On the flip side, many board review manuals provide lists and bullet points lacking sufficient background and context. Acing the IBD Questions on the GI Board Exam by Drs. Brennan Spiegel and Hetal Karsan, fills the unmet need in board review by presenting time-tested and high-yield information in a rational, useful, and contextually appropriate format. With its focus on pearl after pearl, emphasis on images, and attention to high-yield "tough stuff" vignettes you don't know the answers to (yet), Acing the IBD Questions on the GI Board Exam: The Ultimate Crunch-Time Resource will help you ace the GI and recertifying examinations, look good on clerkship rounds, simply challenge you with interesting and entertaining vignettes, and take optimal care of your IBD patients in clinical practice.

Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases - A Comprehensive Guide to Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Mauro Monteiro Correia,... Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases - A Comprehensive Guide to Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Mauro Monteiro Correia, Michael A. Choti, Flavio G. Rocha, Go Wakabayashi
R4,813 Discovery Miles 48 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed condition in oncology, affecting around 1.23 million individuals per year, according to recent statistics. Of these patients, about 50% will develop liver metastases and approximately 20% will present a stage IV disease at diagnosis. These statistics make colorectal liver metastases (CLM) an issue of major importance in current oncology. The area of CLM is subject to great and continuous advances, as its pathophysiologic mechanisms are better understood and more therapeutic and surgical options are developed. Consequently, all professionals involved with the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of CLM should be kept up to date with the latest advances on the field, to provide high standard medical care to their patients. This book is designed to present the state-of-the-art in CLM management and, in doing so, to review the current evidence on CLM, discussing all important topics in the field. Coverage is broad and comprehensive, encompassing introductory topics (history, definitions, epidemiology, etc.), basic science subjects (molecular biology, genetics, dissemination process, etc.) and practical clinical topics (tumor behavior, diagnosis, drug therapy, radiation therapy, surgery, ablation, multidisciplinary teams, etc.). Although comprehensive on the coverage and selection of topics, each chapter is concise and objective, dissecting topics in a practical and direct format. Evidences and recommendations are included. Chapters display a brief introduction of the common knowledge, go straight to the detailed revision of the most recent years of the literature, and end with practical closing observations. This book is a tool for professionals (general and cancer surgeons, HPB surgeons, clinical oncologists, gastroenterologists and medical residents) and interns who search for a qualified and reader friendly revision on topics concerning Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases.

Bariatric Surgery Patients - A Nutritional Guide (Paperback): Betty Wedman-St. Louis Bariatric Surgery Patients - A Nutritional Guide (Paperback)
Betty Wedman-St. Louis
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Approximately 65% of our population is overweight and 12% are morbidly obese. This is despite more than 25 years of attempted medical management. Clearly all current efforts have failed to control this enormous problem. Could it be that we have failed to recognize the cause of the disease and therefore have misdirected our efforts?" - Alfredo Fernandez, MD, FASMBS, Surgeon, Tampa, Florida Reducing obesity through bariatric surgery provides a sustainable weight loss regimen, because it restricts the size of the stomach and limits food intake. However, the surgery limits the amount of nutrients absorbed by the stomach and small intestine. This book provides a comprehensive, practical guide on pre- and post-nutrition considerations in bariatric patients. It describes surgeries including gastric bypass, lap band, and sleeve; nutrition protocols for surgery patients; pregnancy considerations- pre- and post-surgery; food consumption post-surgery; advancing healthy food intake after surgery; minimizing negative side effects; and recommendations to maintain healthy diet. This nutritional guide provides health care practitioners descriptions and answers to the many questions bariatric surgery patients need to know and ask in support group meetings and individual counseling sessions. The first chapter focuses on Selling Obesity and Food as a Cheap and Legal Drug, outlining how food advertising, portion size increases, and food frauds have contributed to the obesity crisis. New research into gut hormones, microbiome influence on obesity, firmicutes, and histamine are included, as well as pregnancy after bariatric surgery and lifestyle changes-eating, sleep, hydration, stress management-needed for success after surgery. Many health care practitioners will use the Post Op Discharge Diet stages of progression to explain how the patient needs to prepare for their liquid diet and overcome numerous issues like dumping syndrome, hypoglycemia, and alcohol and caffeine consumption. Diet plans for Ketogenic, Mediterranean DASH, Glycemic, and Low FODMAP are included within this book.

Peter Cataldo; Foreword by D. J. Jr. Schoetz; Edited by Gerhard F. Buess
R4,389 Discovery Miles 43 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cancer of the rectum continues to be a significant health problem in industrialized co- tries around the world. Relative 5-year survival rates in the USA for cancer of the rectum from 1995 to 2001 improved to 65%, a 15% improvement over 20 years (American Cancer Society, 2007). The reasons for this dramatic improvement include more accurate pr- perative staging, aggressive neoadjuvant therapy and improved surgical technique as well as specialty-trained surgeons. Despite advances in nonoperative techniques of radiation therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, surgical extirpation continues to be the cornerstone of curative treatment of this potentially lethal disease. Radical cancer excision with total mesorectal excision has become the preferred surgical procedure for even early-stage cancers of the rectum. Over the past decade the enthusiasm for local excision (and other local treatments) has given way to persuasive (predominantly retrospective) evidence that the incidence of locoregional recurrence due to unsuspected lymphatic metastases and positive lateral margins is un- ceptably high even for stage T tumors. Vigorous attempts to find characteristics of the 1 tumor that would allow successful local treatments are ongoing.
