It's not a joke
New Jersey leads the country in corruption
"The Soprano State "details the you-couldn't-make-this-up true story of the corruption that has pervaded New Jersey politics, government, and business for the past thirty years. From Jimmy Hoffa purportedly being buried somewhere beneath the end zone in Giants Stadium, through allegations of a thoroughly corrupt medical and dental university, through Mafia influence at all levels, the Garden State might indeed be better named after the HBO mobsters.
Where else would:
- A state attorney general show up after police pulled over her boyfriend who was driving without a valid license?
- A state senator and mayor of Newark (the same guy) spend thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money on a junket to Rio days before leaving office?
- A politically connected developer hire a prostitute to tape sex acts with his own brother-in-law and then send the tape to his sister?
Only in the Soprano State.

After members of our armed forces bravely serve their nation, they sometimes come home to find themselves battling another enemy--within their own government. Using decades of case histories, statistics, and firsthand accounts, award-winning Washington journalist Martin Schram exposes a shocking culture of antagonism toward veterans by the very agency--the Department of Veterans Affairs--that was formed to serve them.

"Vets Under Siege" reveals the shameless lack of care shown to our young servicemen and -women, from recruiters' deceptions and a lack of armor in battle to shoddy, disgusting conditions at Walter Reed and other medical facilities, and looks back to examine the innumerable postwar battles our veterans have had to wage for proper treatment, from World War II to today. Martin Schram's bold bugle call, sounded on behalf of our nation's beleaguered servicemen and -women, lays bare a chilling pattern of institutional negligence, delay, and denial, and points the way forward with definitive solutions to a national disgrace.

commemorating Sir Francis Bacon's 450th birth anniversary, the 20 and more contributors to THE VIEW BEYOND see a connection between Bacon's attempt to write the master plan of science, his esoteric interests, his supposed connection with Rosicrucianism, and the development of science and spirituality today.Division of the book is into four main sections. The first is about Bacon himself: John Henry on Bacon the scientist, Bacon the alchemist; Peter Dawkins on his 'Great Instauration' or programme for human advancement, Simon Bentley on his horoscope and Colum Hayward on his posthumous reputation.Section 2 develops the esoteric connection is represented by a diversity of authors including Tim Wyatt, who puts the main debate in a Theosophical context; Sylvia Francke on the role of Rudolf Steiner as a synthesizer and Nick Lambert on alchemy, The New Atlantis, and the esoteric. In section 3, Frank Perry writes on the seventh ray in art, seeing Bacon as standing at the head of this influence, and Richard Merrick writes on interference patterns in music and how they are building blocks of the universe itself. Section 4 is about science today, and breakthroughs in neuroscience as well as physics which bring into question the traditional model of materialism; it also examines the social responsibility of the scientist, which is inherent in Bacon's view of science as an activity of the state. In a final section, Kathleen Pepper writes on the Golden Age, Colum Hayward on the topic 'Beyond Materialism' and Steve Nation concludes with a review from the United Nations in New York of esotericism, science and spirituality today.

Prophesy, Challenge & Blessing - Visions of 2012 & the Shift (Paperback): Jack Allis Prophesy, Challenge & Blessing - Visions of 2012 & the Shift (Paperback)
Jack Allis
R340 Discovery Miles 3 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

We are living in an age of monumental transformation, known as the shift. This is the hottest of topics, particularly with all the attention given to the ending of the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012. It is also one of the most misunderstood. In his latest book, "Prophesy, Challenge & Blessing - Visions of 2012 & the Shift," Jack Allis cuts through the confusion with a message that is simple, yet profound, echoing the ancient indigenous prophesies from cultures spanning the globe, including the Hopi and the Maya. This is an age when the old world is coming to its inevitable end, so a new world may be born. We can already see this playing out in our world, with the collapse of virtually all the structures of our civilized world. However, this does not have to be doomsday. The solution, again, comes from our indigenous relatives, who knew how to do the one thing we don't. This was to live sustainably in harmony with the forces of nature and with Mother Earth. A huge topic? A formidable task? Yes indeed, but Jack tackles it with eloquence and inspiration. It's up to us to reconnect with our heritage as spiritual beings. We are fully capable of this, but we must get to work.

Various Authors
R450 Discovery Miles 4 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Some say the end of mankind is near. Some say that financial turmoil is part of the process, along with global warming, warfare and the spread of mass psychosis. Children are fed drugs to keep them calm; nations are invaded by their neighbors; the climate is changing all around us; celebrities become our gods and materialism is the new mantra. But what is the real truth? Is there an answer to all this? If our material lives are making us happier, then why so many self-help books, films and philosophies? It can't be denied that the times are changing. Every day sees new challenges for our species, while we cause mayhem and madness on an unbelievable scale. But there is a ratio to it all, a rhyme and reason behind everything that we do and everything that affects us. Ancient Code is a collection of 20 fascinating essays - from today's top authors and researchers - which takes a look at the Ancient Code, our relationship with it and how it relates to 2012. You will learn about a power that was first hidden and then lost over time. Many have sought to rediscover it in order to wield it selfishly. Like mad magicians seeking to rule the world, men of renown have fleetingly seen the incredible nature of this Code but all too often they have missed the point. The Ancient Code needs no material gain, no hatred, warfare or drugs, because YOU are the key to the Code... Featuring: Brian Allan, Jack Allis, Kala Ambrose, Nick Ashron, Philip Coppens, Robert Feather, Philip Gardiner, Dr. Mitchell E. Gibson, Andrew Gough, Jasmine Gould, Dan Green, Dr. John Jay Harper, June-Elleni Lane, Janice Manning, Marshall Masters, Brian Mayne, Steve Mitchell, Nick Pope, Dennis Price and Colin Wilson.

Barry Siegel
R374 Discovery Miles 3 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

On October 6, 1948, a U.S. Air Force B-29 Superfortress crashed soon after takeoff, killing three civilian engineers and six crew members. In June 1949, the engineers' widows filed suit against the government, determined to find out what exactly had happened to their husbands and why the three civilians had been on board the airplane in the first place. But it was the dawn of the Cold War and the Air Force refused to hand over any documents, claiming they contained classified information. The legal battle ultimately reached the Supreme Court, which in 1953 handed down a landmark decision that would, in later years, enable the government to conceal gross negligence and misconduct, block troublesome litigation, and detain criminal suspects without due-process protections.

"Claim of Privilege" is a mesmerizing true account of a shameful incident and its lasting impact on our nation--the gripping story of a courageous fight to right a past wrong and a powerful indictment of governmental abuse in the name of national security.

What a Dirty Shame! - 101 Unforgettable Place Names of Oklahoma (Paperback): Jim Marion Etter What a Dirty Shame! - 101 Unforgettable Place Names of Oklahoma (Paperback)
Jim Marion Etter
R515 Discovery Miles 5 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is probably not an Oklahoman or a visitor to Oklahoma who hasn't wondered about the meaning or origin of the names of many of the cities and towns and other landmarks. Those names mirror the 46th state's diverse culture and unique history. They sing with the beauty of American Indian languages, reflect the hope or earthy humor of early settlers, or ring with the energy of entrepreneurs. In some instances, the record documenting the birth of an Oklahoma place name no longer exists - if it ever did. In others, the "official" version varies from local legend - or is greatly enlivened by it Respected Oklahoma author Jim Etter examines both history and folklore - and that intriguing blend of both - in this work that results from his years as a journalist whose work has taken him to hundreds of Oklahoma communities where he talked with - and listened to - thousands of Oklahomans. The result is a book that is both informative and entertaining and quintessentially Oklahoman - part fact, part fiction and bigger and better than either.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (Paperback): Charles Mackay Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (Paperback)
Charles Mackay
R546 Discovery Miles 5 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

2009 reprint of the 1852 second edition. Two volumes bound into one. Charles Mackay (1814-1889) was a Scottish poet, journalist, and song writer. He was born in Perth, Scotland. His mother died shortly after his birth and his father was by turns a naval officer and a foot soldier. He was educated at the Caledonian Asylum, London, and at Brussels, but spent much of his early life in France. Coming to London in 1834, he engaged in journalism, working for the Morning Chronicle from 1835-1844 and then became Editor of The Glasgow Argus. He moved to the Illustrated London News in 1848 becoming Editor in 1852. He is best known for his classic Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowd, reprinted herein. Mackay covers many types of delusions, among them financial manias like the South Sea Company bubble of 1711-1720, the Mississippi Company bubble of 1719-1720, and the Dutch tulip mania of the early seventeenth century. According to Mackay, during this bubble, speculators from all walks of life bought and sold tulip bulbs and even futures contracts on them. Allegedly some tulip bulb varieties briefly became the most expensive objects in the world during 1637. Mackay's accounts are enlivened by colorful, comedic anecdotes, such as the Parisian hunchback who supposedly profited by renting out his hump as a writing desk during the height of the mania surrounding the Mississippi Company. Financier Bernard Baruch credited the lessons he learned from Mackay with his decision to sell all his stock ahead of the financial crash of 1929.Other chapters are devoted to Alchemists, scientists and pseudo scientists who attempted to turn base metals into gold. Mackay notes that many of these practitioners were themselves deluded, convinced that these feats could be performed if they discovered the correct old recipe or stumbled upon the right combination of ingredients. There are also extensive treatments on the Crusades, Witch Mania and Trials and other forms of mass delusion.
