The Early History of Banking in England (RLE Banking & Finance) (Paperback): Richard Richards The Early History of Banking in England (RLE Banking & Finance) (Paperback)
Richard Richards
R1,792 Discovery Miles 17 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is widely acknowledged as a scholarly and well-documented study of early banking in England. It bridges gaps in the early history of English banking and deals with the operations of the pre-Bank of England bankers, the evolution of English paper money and the remarkable transactions of the early directors of the Bank of England. Although the main body of the book concentrates on the 16th and 17th centuries, the volume includes a brief survey of English banking in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The Gilt-Edged Market (RLE Banking & Finance) (Paperback): Jeremy Wormell The Gilt-Edged Market (RLE Banking & Finance) (Paperback)
Jeremy Wormell
R1,349 Discovery Miles 13 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book was written at a time when the market for government stocks in London, the gilt-edged market of the title, had undergone a period of rapid innovation in the forms of its instruments - index-linked stocks, variable rate stocks, and other new types - and of methods of issue. This had been the response of a government that had needed to fund a massive public sector borrowing requirement despite its attempts to slash public expenditure. In the same period the opening of the London International Financial Futures Exchange (LIFFE), with its 20-year gilt contract, had introduced a new method for hedging risk for investment managers. This book charts and analyses these developments.

This volume draws together diverse sources of information from the EIB's own reports and bulletins, as well as reports of the Us Federal Reserve Board, the IMF and OECD, together with press and journal sources to examine the history, borrowing and lending operations from 1958-1980. It also discusses some of the environmental and social effects of its lending activities. Some consideration has also been given to the bank's operations beyond EU boundaries. The book sheds light on an important EU institution which is crucial to EU member states' infrastructure, industry and economy.

The World's Money (RLE: Banking & Finance) - How it works (Paperback): George Pulay, William M. Clarke The World's Money (RLE: Banking & Finance) - How it works (Paperback)
George Pulay, William M. Clarke
R1,355 Discovery Miles 13 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume is an extremely readable guide to the world of international finance by two former City Editors of The Times. It is designed for people who want to understand something of the world's financial affairs and learn how to follow jargon on the City pages of newspapers or money programmes on radio and television. Starting with the basic facts, the authors gently guide you through the world's money maze - so that by the time you have reached the last chapter you should be able to understand the newspaper extracts printed at the end of the book. The World's Money aims to answer some of the many questions of the times in which it was published: Why had there been so many monetary crises? How were they caused? What is the role of gold in international finance? How do exchange rates, the IMF, the World Bank, the eurodollar market work? What is the new World Money? How was the pound devalued? Can 1929 recur? The material is equally suitable for students, sixth-formers, economists and the armchair reader. Contemporary events are used as examples and illustrations, the history and the future of money discussed, so that the book is at once topical for its times and of lasting value.

As auditors, we are trained to investigate beyond appearances to determine the underlying facts-in other words, to look beneath the surface. Whether evaluating the Enron and World-Com scandals of the early 2000s, the financial crisis of 2007-2008, the Wirecard fraud in 2020 or present-day issues and challenges related to significant estimation uncertainty, understanding the auditor's responsibility related to fraud, maintaining a clear perspective, probing for details, and understanding the big picture are indispensable to effective auditing. With the availability of greater levels of qualitative and quantitative information ("Big Data"), the need for technical skills and challenges facing today's auditor is greater than ever. The Louwers, Bagley, Blay, Strawser, and Thibodeau team has dedicated years of experience in the auditing field to this new edition of Auditing & Assurance Services, supplying the necessary investigative tools for future auditors.

Takuji Kinkyo, Yoichi Matsubayashi, Shigeyuki Hamori
R2,749 Discovery Miles 27 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With increased resilience in the financial systems, emerging Asian economies were less affected by the recent global financial crisis, recovering more quickly from the crisis than major advanced economies. Yet, Asian financial systems remain underdeveloped. More open and efficient financial systems continue to be a key priority for Asia's development strategy. Emerging Asian economies need to tackle the new challenges to macroeconomic and financial stability posed by financial globalisation. This book identifies the key challenges to Asia's financial development in an era of rapid financial globalisation and discusses their policy implications for financial reforms and regional cooperation in East Asia. Particular areas of focus include: the impact of financial globalisation on economic stability and inequality in East Asian economies; the progress of Asia's regional financial cooperation and lessons from the recent European economic crisis; and the priority of financial reforms in individual Asian economies. Combining advanced econometric methods and in-depth case studies, this book provides rigorous and contextual analyses of the most critical issues for Asia's financial development. It offers a comprehensive and useful guide for students, academics, and policymakers interested in the current state and future prospects of Asian financial systems.

Perspectives on Accounting and Finance in China (RLE Accounting) (Hardcover): John Blake, Simon Gao Perspectives on Accounting and Finance in China (RLE Accounting) (Hardcover)
John Blake, Simon Gao
R1,566 Discovery Miles 15 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The rush of entrepreneurial activity in China has been watched with interest by the financial world. This book, the result of an international symposium on Chinese accounting and financial management, assesses the little-known accounting scene in China which up until 1978 remained behind closed doors. Divided into four sections, the volume covers: Chinese perspectives on accounting the business and financial structure of China, including the re-emergence of a Chinese stock market the regulatory framework of accounting in China and comparisons with international accounting standards; the impact of current reforms in Chinese accounting practice the emergence of a new accounting profession in China. The concluding chapter provides an overview of the cultural context of the reforms which took place in the 1990s. By using comparisons with other Asian countries' accounting systems, like Taiwan, the contributors to the volume give an analysis of the state of accountancy in China during the 1990s.

Heads or Tails - Financial Disaster, Risk Management and Survival Strategy in the World of Extreme Risk (Hardcover, New Ed):... Heads or Tails - Financial Disaster, Risk Management and Survival Strategy in the World of Extreme Risk (Hardcover, New Ed)
Evgueni Ivantsov
R3,998 Discovery Miles 39 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the wake of the global financial crisis, Heads or Tails answers the question: what changes should financial institutions undergo to ensure reliable protection against extreme risks? Recent massive failures among large and respected financial institutions, clearly demonstrate that contemporary risk management and regulation fail to provide adequate responses to the challenges set by extreme risks. Dr Evgueni Ivantsov combines analysis of the nature of extreme risk (so-called tail risk), risk management practices and practical solutions to build a robust, enterprise-wide, extreme risk management framework which includes three lines of defence, ranging from strategic to tactical, designed to help address the tail risk during different stages of its development. The author also discusses: c Why modern 'sophisticated' risk management frameworks, strong capitalisation and liquidity do not prevent banks from failure in the face of systemic crisis; c What it means to build an effective defence against systemic and catastrophic losses; c What risk architecture should look like to ensure that extreme risk events are identified early and efficiently mitigated; c How modern management practices, regulation and risk and business culture need to change to guarantee sustainability. While the context of Dr Ivantsov's writing is financial services, the book contains an important message for specialists from any industries exposed to the extreme risks (oil/gas, energy, mining, chemical productions, transportation, etc.). Until the shortcomings of current risk management and regulation are resolved, financial services and other at risk industries will repeat the painful mistakes of the past, over and over again.

Praise for THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS
"Jack Schwager simply writes the best books about trading I've ever read. These interviews always give me a lot to think about. If you like learning about traders and trading, you'll find that reading this book is time well spent." -Richard Dennis, President, The Dennis Trading Group, Inc.
"Jack Schwager's deep knowledge of the markets and his extensive network of personal contacts throughout the industry have set him apart as the definitive market chronicler of our age." -Ed Seykota
"Very interesting indeed!" -John Train, author of The Money Masters
"Successful trading demands longtime experience because it requires firsthand knowledge. If there is a shortcut to this requirement, however, it is in reading about the experiences of others. Jack Schwager's book provides that shortcut. If you find yourself sweating upon occasion as you read, then you're as close to the trading experience as you can get without actually doing it yourself." -Robert R. Prechter, Jr., editor, The Elliott Wave Theorist
THE NEW MARKET WIZARDS
Some traders distinguish themselves from the herd. These supertraders make millions of dollars-sometimes in hours-and consistently outperform their peers.
As he did in his acclaimed national bestseller, Market Wizards, Jack Schwager interviews a host of these supertraders, spectacular winners whose success occurs across a spectrum of financial markets. These traders use different methods, but they all share an edge. How do they do it? What separates them from the others? What can they teach the average trader or investor?
In The New Market Wizards, these wildly successful traders relate the financialstrategies that have rocketed them to success, as well as the embarrassing losses that have proven them all too human.
Meet the Wizards of Wall Street:
* Stan Druckenmiller, who, as manager of the Soros Quantum Fund, realized an average annual return of more than 38 percent on assets ranging between $2.0 and $3.5 billion
* William Eckhardt, a mathematician who, in collaboration with trader Richard Dennis, selected and trained the now-legendary circle known as the Turtles
* Bill Lipschutz, a former architect who, for eight years, was Salomon Brothers' largest and most successful currency trader
* Blair Hull, a one-time blackjack player who began an options trading company with
Asking the questions that readers with an interest in the financial markets would love to pose to the financial superstars, and filled with candid appraisals, The New Market Wizards takes its place as a classic.

Copulae and Multivariate Probability Distributions in Finance (Hardcover, New): Alexandra Dias, Mark Salmon, Chris Adcock Copulae and Multivariate Probability Distributions in Finance (Hardcover, New)

R3,282 R2,601 Discovery Miles 26 010 Save R681 (21%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Portfolio theory and much of asset pricing, as well as many empirical applications, depend on the use of multivariate probability distributions to describe asset returns. Traditionally, this has meant the multivariate normal (or Gaussian) distribution. More recently, theoretical and empirical work in financial economics has employed the multivariate Student (and other) distributions which are members of the elliptically symmetric class. There is also a growing body of work which is based on skew-elliptical distributions. These probability models all exhibit the property that the marginal distributions differ only by location and scale parameters or are restrictive in other respects. Very often, such models are not supported by the empirical evidence that the marginal distributions of asset returns can differ markedly. Copula theory is a branch of statistics which provides powerful methods to overcome these shortcomings. This book provides a synthesis of the latest research in the area of copulae as applied to finance and related subjects such as insurance. Multivariate non-Gaussian dependence is a fact of life for many problems in financial econometrics. This book describes the state of the art in tools required to deal with these observed features of financial data. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Finance.

Education and Employment in the European Union - The Social Cost of Business (Hardcover, New Ed): Dimitris N Chorafas Education and Employment in the European Union - The Social Cost of Business (Hardcover, New Ed)
Dimitris N Chorafas
R4,004 Discovery Miles 40 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Education, employment policy, and pensions are inextricably linked and critical to any sort of business or economic revival, let alone success, and all three are addressed in Education and Employment in the European Union. In the first part of this meticulously researched and highly informative book, Dimitris Chorafas argues that European educational standards, from primary schools through to universities, leave much to be desired. The author then turns to employment. Already affected by problems with education, employment is fettered by structural issues, ranging from inflexible labour laws to heavy social costs. Here, the author suggests what might be done to get employment moving again in difficult economic times. Employment and pensions work in synergy. In the final part, Chorafas examines the implications of and future for pension provision, taking a polyvalent approach which embraces state pensions, company pensions and the workings of pension funds - as well as healthcare issues and the longevity risk. The evidenced analysis of the three interlinked policy areas in this book identifies the issues and the relationships between them. The findings and suggestions will be important to business practitioners, business educators, government authorities, policy makers, consultancies and others either within or wishing to learn lessons from the European Union.
