Pancreas and Beta Cell Replacement is the inaugural volume of the Regenerative and Transplant Medicine series. The idea for this new book series spawned from the observation that the regenerative medicine field is progressing at such a fast pace that the way we currently think and practice transplant medicine is rapidly changing, faster than we could ever imagine. This series was therefore conceived to bring together experts from both the transplant and regenerative medicine fields, to share knowledge first, but also to introduce the transplant audience to the remarkable progress that has occurred in regenerative medicine over the past few decades. At the same time, we intend to illustrate to researchers and operators in the regenerative medicine field the numerous platforms that transplant medicine offers for the application of their technologies. To the publisher and the editors of this series and volumes there is no doubt that regenerative medicine will shape and define the future of transplant medicine. This volume focuses on pancreas and beta cell replacement and illustrates how progress in biomaterial sciences, stem cell biology, gene editing, cell, tissue and organ bioengineering and regeneration, along with advances in xenotransplantation are revolutionizing the field. Written by the world's experts in the fields of pancreas, islet and xenotransplantation, as well as regenerative medicine, it represents a valuable educational tool for those in the fields of clinical transplantation, researchers in the field of regenerative medicine, transplant medicine, diabetes and immunology, as well as for medical and health science students, those in academia, the biotech industry and regulatory agencies working to advance the field. At the end of the book, it will become clear to the reader that beta cell replacement offers a vast array of platforms for the application of regenerative medicine technologies to transplant medicine.

Fat Blame - How the War on Obesity Victimizes Women and Children (Hardcover): April Michelle Herndon Fat Blame - How the War on Obesity Victimizes Women and Children (Hardcover)
April Michelle Herndon
R1,147 Discovery Miles 11 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A four year old Mexican American girl is taken away from her parents because she is obese and experiencing health problems related to her weight. Such a measure, once seen as extreme, quickly comes to be seen as a logical means of addressing a problem viewed as nothing short of child abuse. And yet, for all the purported concern for these children's welfare, little if any mention is ever made of the psychological ramifications of removing children from their families. They are simply the latest victims of the war on obesity--a war declared on a "disease" but conducted, April Herndon contends in this book, along cultural lines.

"Fat Blame" is a book about how the war on obesity is, in many ways, shaping up to be a battle against women and children, especially women and children who are marginalized via class and race. While conceding that fatness can be linked to certain conditions, or that some populations might be heavier than others, Herndon is more interested in the ways women and children are blamed for obesity and the ways interventions aimed at preventing obesity are problematic in and of themselves. From bariatric surgeries being performed on children to women being positioned as responsible for carrying to term a generation of thin children, her book looks closely at the stories of real people whose lives are drastically altered by interventions that are supposedly for their own good.

As with so many practices surrounding bodies and health, like dieting, people are often simultaneously blamed and empowered through policies and interventions, especially those that seem to offer them choices. What Herndon reveals is how such choices only offer the illusion of being empowering. Rather, she shows how woman and children are pushed, pulled, and sometimes victimized by interventions such as bariatric surgeries, limits on reproductive technologies, and having their families broken up by the courts. Only by identifying members of this group as victims of discrimination, she argues, can we hope to return them to a fuller and richer kind of agency.

In declaring a war on obesity, the United States has said that fat is one of the most serious enemies it faces. "Fat Blame" asks us to confront the real enemy--the moral, political, and ideological significance of our every move in this "war."

Religion and Psychiatry - Beyond Boundaries (Hardcover): PPJ Verhagen Religion and Psychiatry - Beyond Boundaries (Hardcover)
PPJ Verhagen
R5,282 Discovery Miles 52 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religion (and spirituality) is very much alive and shapes the cultural values and aspirations of psychiatrist and patient alike, as does the choice of not identifying with a particular faith. Patients bring their beliefs and convictions into the doctor-patient relationship. The challenge for mental health professionals, whatever their own world view, is to develop and refine their vocabularies such that they truly understand what is communicated to them by their patients. "Religion and Psychiatry" provides psychiatrists with a framework for this understanding and highlights the importance of religion and spirituality in mental well-being.

This book aims to inform and explain, as well as to be thought provoking and even controversial. Patiently and thoroughly, the authors consider why and how, when and where religion (and spirituality) are at stake in the life of psychiatric patients. The interface between psychiatry and religion is explored at different levels, varying from daily clinical practice to conceptual fieldwork. The book covers phenomenology, epidemiology, research data, explanatory models and theories. It also reviews the development of DSM V and its awareness of the importance of religion and spirituality in mental health.

What can religious traditions learn from each other to assist the patient? "Religion and Psychiatry" discusses this, as well as the neurological basis of religious experiences. It describes training programmes that successfully incorporate aspects of religion and demonstrates how different religious and spiritual traditions can be brought together to improve psychiatric training and daily practice.Describes the relationship of the main world religions with psychiatryConsiders training, policy and service deliveryProvides powerful support for more effective partnerships between psychiatry and religion in day to day clinical care

This is the first time that so many psychiatrists, psychologists and theologians from all parts of the world and from so many different religious and spiritual backgrounds have worked together to produce a book like this one. In that sense, it truly is a World Psychiatric Association publication.

"Religion and Psychiatry" is recommended reading for residents in psychiatry, postgraduates in theology, psychology and psychology of religion, researchers in psychiatric epidemiology and trans-cultural psychiatry, as well as professionals in theology, psychiatry and psychology of religion

Approximately 70 million people in the United States are affected by a sleep problem. About 40 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and an additional 20-30 million are affected by intermittent sleep-related problems. However, an overwhelming majority of sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated. Some of the most common ones are insomnia, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders, excessive daytime sleepiness, night terrors, sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, and narcolepsy. Long standing sleep disturbances can lead to non-productive lifestyles, poor work performance, weight gain, difficulty with concentration, and social avoidance. Some disorders, like sleep apnea, can lead to even more serious problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Therefore, there is an urgent need for this introduction to the subject of sleep disorders. Chapters include information on symptoms and problems that signal a possible sleep disorder, descriptions of sleep loss effects and their demographics, definitions of common sleep disorders, explanations of various medical and psychological tests for sleep disorder diagnosis, essential medical treatments, guided intervention to change thinking about sleep and related health habits, alternative interventions, follow-up and maintenance issues, and behavioral changes. Appendices include a list of accredited sleep laboratories and resources, suggested readings, and suggested exercises and activities.

This is an analysis of the issues and strategies associated with national health care. The work examines legislation pending in the U.S. Congress, proposals by academic institutions and business and industry associations, the law and legislation underlying the existing system, and critical factors contributing to the existing health care crisis. Topics include the uninsured and underinsured, impaired risks and risk pooling, "pay or play" employer mandates, "universal" health care plans, and the so-called "market reforms." The study concludes with a proposal for a national health care plan that provides a package of "basic" benefits to all Americans, without regard to their work status.

From the Foreword by Sis Wenger
President/CEO
National Association for Children of Alcoholics

Parental drug abuse and alcoholism have an enormously detrimental impact on children and adolescents. Children whose parents suffer from drug abuse or alcoholism often face multiple physical, mental, and behavioral issues. They are at a greater risk for depression, anxiety, low self esteem, and addiction, and also are known to have poor school attendance, difficulty concentrating, and lower IQ scores.

This book offers health care practitioners proactive programs and innovative strategies to use with this vulnerable population. Taking a comprehensive, life course approach, the authors discuss the implications and interventions at the prenatal stage, through childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, and adulthood. With this book, social workers and health care practitioners can help assess and intervene with children of substance abusing parents.Key topics:

  • Dynamics in families with substance abusing parents and treatment implications
  • Issues across the life span of children of substance abusing parents
  • Prevention and early intervention programs for pregnant women who abuse substances
  • Programs for young children, adolescents, college students, and children with incarcerated parents
