Health Research Practices in Digital Context (Hardcover): L Morillon Health Research Practices in Digital Context (Hardcover)

R3,799 Discovery Miles 37 990 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The current "generalized digitization" of society is influencing the health environment, healthcare organizations as well as actors. In this context, human and social sciences deconstruct, nuance and sometimes even challenge certain preconceived ideas and/or dominant discourses. In this book, researchers of four nationalities and three different disciplines have agreed to open the "black box" of their work. They display their scientific practices from the perspective of epistemology, ethics and methodology. They present and analyze their values and postulates but, also, what may have influenced the project, the definition of the object and objectives, as well as their approaches. In a contextual way, the first part presents some changes in environments and infocommunicational practices related to digital health. The second part opens space to reflect on ethics and deontology. Finally, postulating that scientific fact is not an essence but the result of a process, the last part discusses the methods implemented, which may be different from those initially envisaged. This book is dedicated to the researchers and postgraduate students in the human and social sciences as well as the health practitioners likely to collaborate with them.

How Not to Kill Yourself - Portrait of a Suicidal Mind (Hardcover): Clancy Martin How Not to Kill Yourself - Portrait of a Suicidal Mind (Hardcover)
Clancy Martin
R546 R493 Discovery Miles 4 930 Save R53 (10%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The last time Clancy Martin tried to kill himself was in his basement with a dog leash. He didn’t write a note. How Not to Kill Yourself is an affirmation of life by someone who has tried to end it multiple times. It’s about standing in your bathroom every morning, gearing yourself up to die. It’s about choosing to go on living anyway. In an unflinching account of his darkest moments, Clancy Martin makes the case against suicide, drawing on the work of philosophers from Seneca to Jean Améry. Through critical inquiry and practical steps, we might yet answer our existential despair more freely – and with a little more creativity.

The Bends - Compressed Air in the History of Science, Diving, and Engineering (Hardcover, New): John Phillips The Bends - Compressed Air in the History of Science, Diving, and Engineering (Hardcover, New)
John Phillips
R1,747 Discovery Miles 17 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the invention of compressed air in the 1840s, human divers could enter previously inaccessible deep water environments and engineers could design underwater mines and monumental bridges that had never been possible before. But a painful, sometimes fatal illness -- decompression sickness, or the bends -- mysteriously afflicted many of those who used compressed air. This book is a wide-ranging history of the wonders compressed air brought about and the suffering its unknown hazards inflicted. John L. Phillips explores the intertwining roles of science, technology, engineering, medicine, and politics in the invention of compressed air, the recognition and identification of decompression sickness, and the hundred-yearlong process of learning to understand and treat the bends.

The book begins with an overview of the biology and chemistry of respiration and a discussion of the steam engine that could generate compressed air. Drawing on previously unpublished letters, diaries, and notes, Phillips tells the story of early uses of compressed air, first observations of decompression sickness, growing awareness of the bends during construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, and efforts to understand the pathophysiology of the illness. He then considers employee health and safety issues, the science of diving today, and human limits to exploring the ocean deeps. In the history of compressed air and its illnesses, Phillips finds important lessons for dealing with other diseases yet to be confronted in the modern world.

"Phillips takes an interesting socio-scientific approach in this readable book. He tells the fascinating story of decompression sickness well". -- Peter B. Bennett, Divers AlertNetwork

Co-Counselling - The Theory and Practice of Re-evaluation Counselling (Paperback): Katie Kauffman, Caroline New Co-Counselling - The Theory and Practice of Re-evaluation Counselling (Paperback)
Katie Kauffman, Caroline New
R1,147 Discovery Miles 11 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The theory behind Co-Counselling argues that emotional expression should be welcomed and that human beings can help each other recover from past distress by taking turns giving and receiving attention. Benefits of the method include the acceleration of personal growth and the reduction of the stresses inherent in the practitioner's role.
This accessible book offers a serious challenge to much of what is currently considered good practice in mental health services, and succeeds in developing a dialogue between co-counselling and other therapeutic approaches. It provides a thorough introduction to the method, incorporating recent developments in the field and providing a comprehensive account of both the theory and practice. The reader also benefits from inclusion of clinical material outlining the experiences of people from a range of backgrounds offering evidence of the value of Co-Counselling.
Co-Counselling offers a model that has many implications for anyone struggling with emotional problems, particularly those recovering from discrimination, prejudice and oppression. Counsellors and psychotherapists will find this book to be an invaluable resource which both challenges and stimulates.

The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management in Mental Health (Paperback): Carlton Munson The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management in Mental Health (Paperback)
Carlton Munson; Peter Manoleas
R1,584 Discovery Miles 15 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Discover a culturally competent model of clinical case management in mental health practice settings. In The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management, author Peter Manoleas synthesizes some of the existent thinking on case management in cross-cultural psychotherapy settings and develops an effective model of clinical case management for mental health practitioners. The person-in-environment approach leads mental health professionals to realize that case managers and their clients must deal with a variety of cultures within the treatment environment. Rehabilitation programs, substance abuse programs, public assistance, the police, and especially psychiatry itself, are each characterized by their own 'cultures.'These may, at times, conflict with or present significant dissonance with the client's own ethnic culture. The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management advocates that the role of "culture broker" be added to the list of activities for effective clinical case managers. Several of the major ethnic groups represented in public mental health populations are examined, as well as other topics relevant to the daily practice of mental health professionals: Effective cross-cultural crisis intervention The culture of homelessness Women and the mental health system Asians and Pacific Islanders Latinos African Americans Native Americans Seriously Emotionally Disturbed ChildrenThe Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management is of interest to practicing mental health professionals in the public sector as those systems convert from individual therapy to case management models of service delivery. Increasing numbers of ethnic minorities in public systems and the emphasis on cultural competence will make all of the topics of interest to many readers.

Treatment of Radiation Injuries (Hardcover, 1990 ed.): Doris Browne Treatment of Radiation Injuries (Hardcover, 1990 ed.)
Doris Browne
R4,150 Discovery Miles 41 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The proliferation of radioactive materials in industry, in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine, in scientific and medical research, in the military, and as a source of energy has increased the likelihood of accidental exposure to ionizing radiation. Further, the number of individuals exposed in accidents, such as Chernobyl, U. S. S. R.; Goiania, Brazil; and San Salvador, El Salvador, underscores the potential for large-scale radiation accidents. Because of these accidents, health care providers have found themselves treating patients with acute radiation injuries and subsequent complications. Often the radiation injuries are combined with burns or other trauma and the infectious and immune complications associated with such injuries. The treatment of victims of these accidents has provided important information about the medical management of radiation casualties. However, development of techniques to improve the diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries, to collect follow up data on survivors, and to determine the long-term effects of uncontrolled radiation exposure must continue. The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland, and its Medical Radiobiology Advisory Team sponsored the First Consensus Development Conference on the Treatment of Radiation Injuries in Washington, DC, on May 10-13, 1989. The proceedings of the conference are presented in this volume, which we hope will serve as a reference for clinicians and basic research scientists who require knowledge of the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries. This conference was designed specifically to address the areas of hematopoietic injury, infectious complications, and combined injury."
