Innovation is the life blood of practically every organization. Innovation drives growth, development, and prosperity for many organizations and geographical areas. Sometimes, innovation thrives within a certain geographical location or in certain organizations that are known for their innovative approaches. This outstanding new volume will demonstrate how to measure the success of innovation in all types of organizations. In the last decade, there have been tremendous investments in creativity and innovations sponsored by companies, cities, states, countries, universities, NGO's, and even non-profits. With the magnitude of emphasis on creativity and innovation, the sponsors and key stakeholders will demand to know the value of these programs. The Value of Innovation: Measuring the Impact and ROI in Creativity and Innovation Programs will show step-by-step how to measure the impact and the ROI of innovation and creativity programs. The process collects six types of data: reaction, learning, application, impact, ROI, and intangibles. Data are collected analyzed and reported using a systematic, logic model. Conservative standards create results that are both CEO and CFO friendly. This proven process has been used now in 5000 organizations and this new book adapts the method directly to this critical area of innovation, showing examples and case studies.
The recent explosion of interdisciplinary research has fragmented the knowledge base surrounding renewable polymers. The Chemistry of Bio-based Polymers 2nd edition brings together, in one volume, the research and work of Professor Johannes Fink, focusing on biopolymers that can be synthesized from renewable polymers. After introducing general aspects of the field, the book's subsequent chapters examine the chemistry of biodegradable polymeric types sorted by their chemical compounds, including the synthesis of low molecular compounds. Various categories of biopolymers are detailed including vinyl-based polymers, acid and lactone polymers, ester and amide polymers, carbohydrate-related polymers and others. Procedures for the preparation of biopolymers and biodegradable nanocomposites are arranged by chemical methods and in vitro biological methods, with discussion of the issue of "plastics from bacteria." The factors influencing the degradation and biodegradation of polymers used in food packaging, exposed to various environments, are detailed at length. The book covers the medical applications of bio-based polymers, concentrating on controlled drug delivery, temporary prostheses, and scaffolds for tissue engineering. Professor Fink also addresses renewable resources for fabricating biofuels and argues for localized biorefineries, as biomass feedstocks are more efficiently handled locally.
Toward developing a rational basis for the metal cutting process. From the introduction: The economic importance of the cutting process may be appreciated by the single observation that nearly every device in use in our complex society has one or more machined surfaces or holes. There are several reasons for developing a rational approach to the cutting problem: 1. To improve cutting techniques-even minor improvements are of major importance in high volume production. 2. To produce products of greater precision and of greater useful life. 3. To increase the rate of production and produce a greater number and variety of products with the tools available. In this treatment of the subject we will consider the cutting process in fundamental terms. The objective is to explain a number of commonly observed results rather than to present a large mass of empirical constants and a large number of empirical relationships of limited applicability.
