Demystifying Switching Power Supplies (Paperback): Raymond Mack Demystifying Switching Power Supplies (Paperback)
Raymond Mack
R2,257 Discovery Miles 22 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a crash course in the fundamental theory, concepts, and terminology of switching power supplies. It is designed to quickly prepare engineers to make key decisions about power supplies for their projects.
Intended for readers who need to quickly understand the key points of switching power supplies, this book covers the 20% of the topic that engineers use, 80% of the time.
Unlike existing switching power supply books that deal strictly with design issues, this book also recognizes the growing importance of "off-the-shelf" commercial switching power supplies, giving readers the background necessary to select the right commercial supply.
This book covers the core essentials of power supply theory and design while keeping mathematics to the absolute minimum necessary. Special attention is given to the selection of appropriate components, such as inductors and transformers, to ensure safe and reliable operation. Engineers, whose main design responsibilities are in other areas, will better understand the strengths and weaknesses of switching power supplies and whether such supplies are appropriate for their projects. They will be able to give more meaningful design requirements and specifications to those who design switching power supplies.
* Discusses both AC line supplies and DC-DC inverters.
* Covers the main switching power supply designs, including flyback, forward conversion, bridge, buch, boost, and boost/buck topologies.
* Design examples include a 220 volt offline switching power supply and a 110 volt uninterruptible supply.

The Digital Factory - The Human Labor of Automation (Hardcover): Moritz Altenried The Digital Factory - The Human Labor of Automation (Hardcover)
Moritz Altenried
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Digital Factory reveals the hidden human labor that supports today's digital capitalism. The workers of today's digital factory include those in Amazon warehouses, delivery drivers, Chinese gaming workers, Filipino content moderators, and rural American search engine optimizers. Repetitive yet stressful, boring yet often emotionally demanding, these jobs require little formal qualification, but can demand a large degree of skills and knowledge. This work is often hidden behind the supposed magic of algorithms and thought to be automated, but it is in fact highly dependent on human labor. The workers of today's digital factory are not as far removed from a typical auto assembly line as we might think. Moritz Altenried takes us inside today's digital factories, showing that they take very different forms, including gig economy platforms, video games, and Amazon warehouses. As Altenried shows, these digital factories often share surprising similarities with factories from the industrial age. As globalized capitalism and digital technology continue to transform labor around the world, Altenried offers a timely and poignant exploration of how these changes are restructuring the social division of labor and its geographies as well as the stratifications and lines of struggle.

J. Quevedo, T. Escobet
R4,550 Discovery Miles 45 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the beginning of the new millennium the PID controller continues to be a key component of industrial control. During this century many different structures of control have been proposed to overcome the limitation of the PID controllers. Because of their simplicity and usefulness, they give a very useful solution to an important part of the industrial processes.

The present-day structure of PID controllers is quite different from the original analog PID controllers. Now the implementation of the PID is based on digital design, these digital PIDs include many algorithms such as anti-wind-up, auto-tuning, adaptive, and fuzzy fine tuning to improve their performances, but the basic actions remain the same.

During the last two decades, the general reluctance of researchers to use PID controllers has begun to disappear. Many of the new capabilities of digital PID controllers have been introduced by the research community. The industrial control users apply these innovations easily, even enthusiastically. PID control has become one of the most important ways for the scientific specialist in control and the users of industrial control to work together.

This workshop was organized so that the scientific world and the industrial control world could meet and discuss the present and future use of PID controllers - the successes and failures of their use and how to determine the limits of performances. This workshop was also useful for learning about control history, since the origin and evolution of PID control can provide us with keys for new development and designs.

Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control (Hardcover): M.J. Crocker Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control (Hardcover)
M.J. Crocker
R5,591 Discovery Miles 55 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Two of the most acclaimed reference works in the area of acoustics in recent years have been our "Encyclopedia of Acoustics, " 4 Volume set and the Handbook of Acoustics spin-off. These works, edited by Malcolm Crocker, positioned Wiley as a major player in the acoustics reference market. With our recently published revision of Beranek & Ver's "Noise and Vibration Control Engineering," Wiley is a highly respected name in the acoustics business.

Crocker's new handbook covers an area of great importance to engineers and designers. Noise and vibration control is one largest areas of application of the acoustics topics covered in the successful encyclopedia and handbook. It is also an area that has been under-published in recent years. Crocker has positioned this reference to cover the gamut of topics while focusing more on the applications to industrial needs. In this way the book will become the best single source of need-to-know information for the professional markets.

Natural and Synthetic Waxes - Origin, Production, Technology, and Applications (Hardcover): Ej Krendlinger Natural and Synthetic Waxes - Origin, Production, Technology, and Applications (Hardcover)
Ej Krendlinger
R4,353 Discovery Miles 43 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Natural and Synthetic Waxes A compilation of all relevant information for the production and use of waxes in technical applications Waxes are among the oldest organic substances used by mankind. Before all others, beeswax is known to have played a role in human history for thousands of years. But over time, many other wax species have been detected and exploited, and prepared for different utilizations. Today, we possess knowledge of a great variety of different types of waxes. Unfortunately, there still is no broadly accepted definition of a wax: for the relatively few wax chemists, waxes are usually defined by their physico-chemical properties more than by their chemical constitution. Waxes are not uniform but oligomeric and polymeric substances, not simply describable with a chemical formula. The realm of waxes encompasses fully or partly natural, refined, partly or fully synthetic products, which can be extended by "wax-like" products which do not fulfil all definition criteria. Waxes are offered in different forms like pellets, granules, powders, or micropowders. Their number of technical applications runs into thousands. However, waxes in most cases are just adjuvants or additives, and with few exceptions like candles not known to a broader public. Only few publications over the last decades tried to present a more comprehensive overview of heir chemistry, chemical composition, their physical and analytical properties, their applications, and their sometimes astonishing history. Based on personal experience and expertise, the authors intend to present an overview on the main classes of waxes, their origin, history, future, and potential fate. Economical aspects like market size and development, ecological impacts and challenges, and regulatory issues are also addressed. Waxes are indispensable products in everyday life and in industry and technology, though mostly not even visible or distinguishable to experts. They deserve more than the role of a "poor cousin" in chemistry and technology.
