Soil Erosion and Carbon Dynamics (Hardcover): Eric J. Roose, Rattan Lal, Christian Feller, Bernard Barthes, B.A. Stewart Soil Erosion and Carbon Dynamics (Hardcover)
Eric J. Roose, Rattan Lal, Christian Feller, Bernard Barthes, B.A. Stewart
R6,750 Discovery Miles 67 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In addition to depleting nutrients necessary for healthy crops, soil erosion processes can affect the carbon balance of agroecosystems, and thus influence global warming.. While the magnitude and severity of soil erosion are well documented, fluxes of eroded carbon are rarely quantified. The most complete, nonpartisan source of information available today on this topic, Soil Erosion and Carbon Dynamics brings together a diverse group of papers and data from the perspectives of world-renowned sedimentologists, soil scientists, and agronomists to resolve whether soil erosion on carbon is a beneficial or destructive process. This book collects quantitative data on eroded carbon fluxes from the scale of the agricultural plot to that of large basins and oceans. It quantifies the magnitude of eroded carbon for different soil management practices as compared to normal carbon sequestration and discusses the fate of the eroded carbon and whether or not it is a source or sink for atmospheric CO2. Finally, the book offers data reflecting the impact of soil erosion on soil, water, and air quality. Other important topics include solubilization, the determination of mineralization rates, carbon transfer, and sediment deposition, as well as carbon dioxide emissions, global warming potential, and the implications of soil erosion on the global carbon cycle and carbon budget. Based on the first symposium of the international colloquium Land Uses, Erosion and Carbon Sequestration held in Montpellier, France, Soil Erosion and Carbon Dynamics provides data that links soil erosion to the global carbon cycle and elucidates the fate of eroded carbon at scales ranging from plot to watershed.

Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting II - 2nd International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and... Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting II - 2nd International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting, ICCRRR-2, 24-26 November 2008, Cape Town, South Africa (Hardcover)
Mark G. Alexander, Hans-Dieter Beushausen, Frank Dehn, Pilate Moyo
R8,266 Discovery Miles 82 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Second International Conference on Concrete Repair, Rehabilitation and Retrofitting (ICCRRR 2005) was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 24-26 November 2008. The Conference followed the very successful First International Conference, also in Cape Town in 2005, and continued as a collaborative venture by researchers from the South African Research Programme in Concrete Materials (based at the Universities of Cape Town and The Witwatersrand) and The Construction Materials Sections at Leipzig University and MFPA Leipzig in Germany. The background, in industry and the state of national infrastructures, continues to be highly challenging and demanding. The facts remain that much of our concrete infrastructure deteriorates at unacceptable rates, that we need appropriate tools and techniques to undertake the vast task of sound repair, maintenance and rehabilitation of such infrastructure, and that all this must be undertaken with due cognisance of the limited budgets available for such work. New ways need to be found to extend the useful life of concrete structures cost-effectively. Confidence in concrete as a viable construction material into the 21st century needs to be retained and sustained, particularly considering the environmental challenges that the industry and society now face. The conference proceedings contain papers, presented at the conference, and classified into a total of 12 sub themes which can be grouped under the three main themes of (i) Concrete durability aspects, (ii) Condition assessment of concrete structures, and (iii) Concrete repair, rehabilitation and retrofitting. The major interests in terms of submissions exists in the fields of innovative materials for durable concrete construction, integrated service life modelling of reinforced concrete structures, NDE/NDT and measurement techniques, repair methods and materials, and structural strengthening and retrofitting techniques. The large number of high-quality papers presented and the wide range of relevant topics covered confirm that these proceedings will be a valued reference for many working in the important fields of concrete durability and repair, and that they will form a suitable base for discussion and provide suggestions for future development and research. Set of book of abstracts (476 pp) and a searchable full paper CD-ROM (1396 pp).

A Ditadura Militar e a Governanca da Agua no Brasil (The Military Dictatorship and Water Governance in Brazil) - Ideologia, Poderes Politico-Economico e Sociedade Civil na Construcao das Hidreletricas de Grande Porte (The Role of Ideology, Political-Economic Power and Civil Society in the Construction of Large Hydropower Dams) (Paperback)
Fernanda De Souza Braga
R2,578 Discovery Miles 25 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in large hydroelectric plants in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. These large hydraulic structures impact the environment and the lives of people living in the places where they settle and require a special type of water governance. The dictatorial regime (1964-1985) created a "standard" for the construction of these great structures, through an institutional and legal framework, which benefited the Brazilian business elite but also, through the creation of a popular imagination, which shows itself lasting progress on the country's progress and development. The suspension of security, the fragility of institutional environmental structures, the disrespect for indigenous reserves, the lack of clarity about the concept of "affected population" and the non-payment of fair compensation were identified as one of the main challenges for a democratic water governance in the country. In the late 1970s, the Dam-Affected Movement (MAB) began its organization and is also studied in this research. The study is an important and insightful academic contribution to the understanding of the main bottlenecks of effective water governance in Brazil.

Dams: Incidents and Accidents (Hardcover): K.R. Saxena, V.M. Sharma Dams: Incidents and Accidents (Hardcover)
K.R. Saxena, V.M. Sharma
R4,217 R3,731 Discovery Miles 37 310 Save R486 (12%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The increasing number of dams built in the last century has underlined the necessity of these constructions to the all-round development of a country. The advent of rock mechanics, engineering geology and a better understanding of materials have made it possible to construct higher and larger dams and to tackle more difficult sites. The assumptions and risks used in the theory of dam design include such unpredictable events as earthquakes, floods, and geological faults or soft seams, which may be either underestimated or completely missed during initial exploration. Incidents relating to dams are manageable at an early stage, whereas accidents, which are largely unforeseen, result in unexpected behaviour of dams and in catastrophic failures. Investigations conducted to determine the cause of a failure may not reveal the true sequence of events, while expert analyses are often controversial. From the dams that do not fail, of course, we learn nothing. Systematically monitoring the dam's behaviour from the potential risk stage to the accident event, would allow a hazard-management programme to be implemented, minimising loss of life and property, and provide useful data.

Novel Concepts, Systems and Technology for Sludge Management in Emergency and Slum Settings (Paperback): Peter Mawioo Novel Concepts, Systems and Technology for Sludge Management in Emergency and Slum Settings (Paperback)
Peter Mawioo
R2,569 Discovery Miles 25 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Management of sludge is one of the most pressing issues in sanitation provision. The situation is especially complex when large quantities of fresh sludge containing various contaminants are generated in onsite sanitation systems in urban slums, emergency settlements and wastewater treatment facilities that require proper disposal of the sludge. The application of fast and efficient sludge management methods is important under these conditions. This study focused on the development of an innovative sludge treatment unit that is based on the microwave irradiation technology. The technology provides a rapid and efficient option for sludge treatment in isolated conditions such as slum, emergency, and similar situations. The microwave based technology forms part of the eSOS (emergency sanitation operation system) concept that promotes an integrated sanitation approach in which all components of the entire sanitation chain are planned holistically. Besides, the study addresses the deficiencies associated with the poor choice of emergency sanitation technology options by proposing a methodology that is based on compensatory multi-criteria analysis. This study contributes in providing solutions towards improved sanitation in complex scenarios, especially the management of faecal sludge in emergency and slum conditions.
