Recent advances in technology have permitted the construction of large dams, reservoirs and channels. This progress has necessitated the development of new design and construction techniques, particularly with the provision of adequate flood release facilities. Chutes and spillways are designed to spill large water discharges over a hydraulic structure (e.g. dam, weir) without major damage to the structure itself and to its environment. At the hydraulic structure, the flood waters rush as an open channel flow or free-falling jet, and it is essential to dissipate a very signifi cant part of the flow kinetic energy to avoid damage to the hydraulic structure and its surroundings. Energy dissipation may be realised by a wide range of design techniques. A number of modern developments have demonstrated that such energy dissipation may be achieved (a) along the chute, (b) in a downstream energy dissipator, or (c) a combination of both. The magnitude of turbulent energy that must be dissipated in hydraulic structures is enormous even in small rural and urban structures. For a small storm waterway discharging at a 4 m3/s mm high drop, the turbulent kinetic energy flux per unit time is 120 kW! At a large dam, the rate of energy dissipation can exceed tens to hundreds of gigawatts; that is, many times the energy production rate of nuclear power plants. Many engineers have never been exposed to the complexity of energy dissipator designs, to the physical processes taking place and to the structural challenges. Several energy dissipators, spillways and storm waterways failed because of poor engineering design. It is believed that a major issue affecting these failures was the lack of understanding of the basic turbulent dissipation processes and of the interactions between free-surface aeration and flow turbulence. In that context, an authoritative reference book on energy dissipation in hydraulic structures is proposed here. The book contents encompass a range of design techniques including block ramps, stepped spillways, hydraulic jump stilling basins, ski jumps and impact dissipators.

Since the early 1980s, researchers and practitioners in the organisational and management fields have presumed a link between organisational, or corporate, culture and organisational performance. Whilst many believe this exists, other authors have been critical of the validity of such studies. Part of this doubt stems from a reliance on measures of organisational performance that are based purely on financial measures of business growth. Using the construction industry as the subject of his research, Vaughan Coffey traces the development of the literature on organisational culture and business effectiveness and investigates the culture-performance link using a new and highly objective measure of company performance and an evaluation of organisational culture, which is largely behaviourally-based. Providing a theoretical contribution to the field, this work shows that various cultural traits appear to be closely linked to objectively measured organisational effectiveness. This book will be valuable to professionals and researchers in the fields of management and public policy. It indicates directions for construction companies to develop and change, and in doing so strengthen their chances of remaining strong when opportunities for work might deplete and only the most successful companies will be able to survive.

The field of ecohydraulics integrates hydrodynamic and eco-dynamic processes. While hydrodynamic processes are usually well described by partial differential equations (PDE's) based on physical conservation principles, ecosystem dynamics often involve specific interactions at the local scale. Because of this, Cellular Automata (CA) are a viable paradigm in ecosystem modelling. All cells in a CA system update their states synchronously at discrete steps according to simple local rules. The classical CA configuration consists of uniformly distributed cells on a structured grid. But in the field of hydrodynamics, the use of unstructured grids has become more and more popular due to its flexibility to handle arbitrary geometries. The main objective of this research is to identify whether the CA paradigm can be extended to unstructured grids. To that end the concept of Unstructured Cellular Automata (UCA) is developed and various UCA configurations are explored and their performance investigated. The influence of cell size was analyzed in analogy with the Finite Volume Method. A characteristic parameter -min distance of UCA- was put forward and tested by numerical experiments. Special attention was paid to exploring the analogies and differences between the discrete CA paradigm and discrete numerical approximations for solving PDE's. The practical applicability of UCA in ecohydraulics modelling is explored through a number of case studies and compared with field measurements.

Following current trends toward development of novel materials and structures, this volume explores the concept of high-performance metamaterials and metastructures with extremal mechanical properties, inspired by tensegrity systems. The idea of extremal materials is applied here to cellular tensegrity lattices of various scales. Tensegrity systems have numerous advantages: they are lightweight, have a high stiffness-to-mass ratio, are prone to structural control, can be applied in smart and adaptive systems, and exhibit unusual mechanical properties. This study is focused on tensegrity lattices, whose inner architecture resembles that of cellular metamaterials, but which are aimed at civil engineering applications in non-material scales. It proposes a methodology for investigation of extremal mechanical properties of such systems, based on discrete and continuum approaches, including the discussion on scale effects. It proves that, similarly to tensegrity-based metamaterials, tensegrity metastructures are able to exhibit extremal mechanical behaviour. This book is directed to researchers and scientists working on metamaterials and tensegrity systems, developing energy-absorption solutions for building and transport industry. The findings described in this monograph can also be useful in other fields of applied sciences, such as civil engineering, robotics and material science.

Climate change, rapid population growth and urbanization are
causing water shortage and pollution, especially in arid and
semi-arid regions of the world due to the growing demand in
different sectors and disposal of inadequately treated wastewater
to water bodies. To tackle these challenges, further treatment and
reuse of wastewater effluent using soil aquifer treatment (SAT) is
an attractive cost-effective and environmentally friendly option
that is employed with no intensive use of electricity and
chemicals.

Despite the mechanisms of reservoir sedimentation being well known for a long time, sustainable and preventive measures are rarely taken into consideration in the design of new reservoirs. To avoid operational problems of powerhouses, sedimentation is often treated for existing reservoirs with measures which are efficient only for a limited time. The today's challenge of dam owners and engineers is to guarantee with adequate mitigation measures the future sustainable use of the vital reservoirs supplying water for drinking, food and energy production. Research and development is still urgently needed to identify efficient mitigation measures adapted to the main sedimentation processes involved in reservoirs. During the seventh International Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics "River Flow 2014" at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, scientists and professionals from all over the world addressed the challenge of reservoir sedimentation in a special session and exchanged their knowledge and experiences. Invited and selected contributions, which give an overview on the latest developments and research regarding reservoir sedimentation including case studies, are presented in this book, in the hope that they can contribute to better sustainable use of the vital reservoirs worldwide.
