It introduces more advanced functionality that has been recently added to the open-source MRST software. It is however a self-contained introduction to a variety of modern numerical methods for simulating multiphase flow in porous media, with applications to geothermal energy, chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR), flow in fractured and unconventional reservoirs, and in the unsaturated zone. The reader will learn how to implement new models and algorithms in a robust, efficient manner. A large number of numerical examples are included, all fully equipped with code and data so that the reader can reproduce the results and use them as a starting point for their own work. Like the original textbook, this book will prove invaluable for researchers, professionals and advanced students using reservoir simulation methods. This title is available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE that took place at Newark, Delaware, U. S. A. , July 14-23, 1985. The objective of this meeting was to present and discuss selected topics associated with transport phenomena in porous media. By their very nature, porous media and phenomena of transport of extensive quantities that take place in them, are very complex. The solid matrix may be rigid, or deformable (elastically, or following some other constitutive relation), the void space may be occupied by one or more fluid phases. Each fluid phase may be composed of more than one component, with the various components capable of interacting among themselves and/or with the solid matrix. The transport process may be isothermal or non-isothermal, with or without phase changes. Porous medium domains in which extensive quantities, such as mass of a fluid phase, component of a fluid phase, or heat of the porous medium as a whole, are being transported occur in the practice in a variety of disciplines.

The digital world is characterized by its immediacy, its density of information and its omnipresence, in contrast to the concrete world. Significant changes will occur in our society as AI becomes integrated into many aspects of our lives. This book focuses on this vision of universalization by dealing with the development and framework of AI applicable to all. It develops a moral framework based on a neo-Darwinian approach - the concept of Ethics by Evolution - to accompany AI by observing a certain number of requirements, recommendations and rules at each stage of design, implementation and use. The societal responsibility of artificial intelligence is an essential step towards ethical, eco-responsible and trustworthy AI, aiming to protect and serve people and the common good in a beneficial way.

This work provides comprehensive guidance on maintaining old waterfront walls, especially gravity walls constructed with stone masonry, brick blocks or mass concrete. It should be of use to engineers and owners responsible for such structure. Many existing waterfront structures (harbour and dock walls, breakwaters, seawalls, flood defences, skin walls, bridge piers and abutments) are crucial parts of industrial or environmental facilities. Many date back to the 19th century and earlier, and information on their design and construction is often incomplete. They are often massive structures, and the problems of working over or under water and on the buried back of the wall mean that they are difficult and expensive to investigate and maintain, yet they represent substantial capital assets and appropriate management and maintenance are essential. This work draws together a wealth of information and experience on the types of wall that were constructed up to the earlier part of this century. It includes numerous drawings and illustrations of these walls and reviews their performance. It goes on to identify and describe the most suitable techniques available for their inspection, struct
The developments of the late 1990s in the structural analysis of aluminium components are presented with particular reference to work in Europe. This text brings together European experts who are actively engaged in the formulation of design rules and in the writing of codes of practice. The text is written against a background of the British Standard on the structural use of aluminium, BSB8118; the development of an equivalent Eurocode; and the noticeable increase in research on the performance of aluminium structural components leading to useful advances in analysis and design philosophies. The book opens with a chapter on loading, safety and design principles and includes a discussion of fatigue and fracture. This is followed by a series of chapters on particular components such as beams, beam columns and plate girders which highlight advances in research. The problem of welded aluminium joints is discussed in depth, as are the design rules for bolted joints. Each chapter gives the background to design rules giving designers the confidence to follow progressive ideas and to support these by accurate and perceptive structural analysis.
Concrete has clearly emerged as the most economical and durable material for the building of the vast majority of marine structures. Reinforced concrete too has overcome the technological problems making it a suitable material for the construction of advanced marine structures such as offshore drilling platforms, superspan bridges and undersea tunnels. As the world becomes increasingly ocean-oriented for energy and other resources it is predicted that construction activities during the 21st century will be dominated by concrete sea structures. The performance of concrete in the marine environment is presented here giving state-of-the-art reviews of the nature of the marine environment; the composition and properties of concrete; history of concrete performance in seawater; major causes of deterioration of concrete in the marine environment; selection of materials and mix proportioning for durable concrete; recommended concrete practice; and repair of deteriorated marine structures. It should be of value to any design or construction engineer responsible for marine structures.
This book offers a state-of-the-art overview and includes recent developments of various direct computational analysis methods. It is based on recently developed and widely employed numerical procedures for limit and shakedown analysis of structures and their extensions to a wide range of physical problems relevant to the design of materials and structural components. The book can be used as a complementary text for advanced academic courses on computational mechanics, structural mechanics, soil mechanics and computational plasticity and it can be used a research text.
This new volume studies the impact and management of environmental pollution on plants, often resulting in plant abiotic stress physiology, which causes reduction in growth due to alterations in biochemical and physiological processes, thus threatening food security, the ecosystem, and the plants themselves. This volume details the harm to plants caused primarily by heavy metal contamination in soils, by pesticides use, and by air pollution and presents several mitigation strategies as well. Soils contaminated with heavy metals is a major challenge worldwide due to increase in anthropogenic and geologic activities. Despite the effectiveness of pesticides in preventing pest invasions and yield decline, pesticides and other air pollutants cause biochemical changes that can instigate leaf damage, stomatal impairment, early senescence, decrease in photosynthetic efficiency, interruption of membrane perviousness, and decrease of growth and yield in sensitive plant types. Chapters in this volume address these issues. Topics include the antioxidant, photosynthesis, and growth characteristics of plants grown in polluted soils; the benefits and hazards of pesticides; microbe-assisted bioremediation and biotechnological advances for plant pollution control; genetically modified plants and their potential resistance to environmental pollution; and more.
This wise, eloquent volume distils the essence of Dr. Jerry Lewis' rich 25-year background in the teaching of psychotherapeutic skills to residents and other professionals - skills that are central to the core identity of the psychiatrist.
Based on the proceedings of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies Symposium held at the Cranfield Institute of Technology, this book serves to highlight a wide variety of areas of civil engineering where microbiological activity needs to be considered more thoroughly by engineers during the design, construction and operation phases of projects. Examples of where microbial processes are now known to have a significant affect include corrosion, deterioration of concrete and other construction materials, impairment of flow in groundwater abstraction systems in pipes and pumps, pressure relief and drainage systems in embankment dams, clogging of irrigation and drainage systems, alteration of soil and rock properties and the production of harmful gases. For a long time many of these "buried" problems have been thought of, purely in terms of physical and chemical processes. What is often happening, but going unnoticed, is some form of microbial activity, which initiates, enhances or is encouraged by other processes. When it is considered that the average bacteria cell is only a few microns in size, then it is hardly surprising if their activity does often go unnoticed. At
This updated, revised and extended edition gives a comprehensive introduction to the understanding and use of the finite element method as applied to structures. The text methodically covers all the important bridges in understanding up to and including the introduction of isoparametric elements.

Thin shells are three-dimensional structures with a dimension (the thickness) small with respect to the two others.Such thin structures are widely used in automobileandaviation industries,or in civil engineering, because they provide animportantsti?ness, due to theircurvature, with a small weight. Fig. 0.1. Airbus A380 Fig. 0.2. Hemispherical roof (Marseille, France) One ofthechallenges is often to reduce the weight (andconsequently the thickness)oftheshells, preservingtheirsti?ness. So that it is essential to have 1 accuratemodelsforthinandevenverythinshells ,andtobeabletocomputethe displacements resultingfromagivenloading. In particular, singularities leading to fractures in some cases must be absolutely predicted a priori and ofcourse avoided (see Fig.0.3 forexample). Since the pioneeringmodels of Novozhilov-Donnell [81] and Koiter [65][66], numerous works havebeen devoted to establish linear and non linear elastic shell model usingdirect orsurfacic approaches [18][25][100]. More recently, the asymptoticmethods [87] havebeen used, to try tojustify rigorously, fromthe three-dimensional equations, the shell models obtained by direct approaches - lying onapriori assumption, andto construct new models [54][55]. This way, 1 Very thin shells are present in certain domains of industry, as plastic ?lms for pa- aging or for electronics, streched sails, or even very thin metal sheets obtained by drawing. E. The Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Analysis and Design of Bridges held at e me, lzmir, Turkey from 28 June 1982 to 9 July 1982 are contained in the present volume. The Advanced Study Institute was attended by 37 lecturers and participants from 10 different countries. The Organizing Committee consisted of Professors P. Gtilkan, A. C. Scordelis, S. T. Wasti and 9. Yl. lmaz. The guidelines set by NATO for the Advanced Study Institute require it to serve not only as an efficient forum for the dissemination of available advanced knowledge to a selected group of qualified people but also as a platform for the exploration of future research possibilities in the scientific or engineering areas concerned. The main topics covered by the present Advanced Study Institute were the mathematical modelling of bridges for better analysis and the scientific assessment of bridge behaviour for the introduction of improved design procedures. It has been our observation that as a result of the range and depth of the lectures presented and the many informal discussions that took place, ideas became fissile, the stimulus never flagged and many gaps in the engineering knowledge of the participants were "bridged." Here we particularly wish to mention that valuable informal presenta tions of research work were made during the course of the Institute by Drs. Friedrich, Karaesmen, Lamas and Parker."
