A variety of VLSI design simulation software packages are available. These software packages are based on Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Electrical Design Automation (EDA) tools. These software packages provide the design, functional simulation, physical layout and design testing before a chip can be manufactured. The objective of this book is to develop a VLSI design simulation software that has familiar and easier user interface and as good as other leading software packages but less expensive. We compared the various features of VLSI simulation software offered by the leading software packages in the industry. This effort is quite novel. Microsoft Excel has capability of performing arithmetic and logical calculations and it has a power of logical decision making. We started with very simple tasks using Microsoft Excel's built in tools (objects) such as charts and graphs, Auto-Shapes, spreadsheet interface and advanced tools like macros and VBA. VBA (Visual Basic for Application), a programming language based on Visual Basic, makes Microsoft Excel a powerful candidate for using it as a tool for VLSI Design simulation.
The book hereby is intended to be a step by step guide that addresses to users familiar with Red Hat(r)Enterprise Linux(r) based distributions and want to expand their knowledge for personal purposes or, why not, later for preparation if interested to obtain one of the basic certifications offered by Red Hat,
Neural networks have a proven ability to learn complex data sets, but suffer from the amount of processing time required for large based networks. FPGAs, which have become commonplace since their inception, offer the academic community a way of achieving real-time computation due to their parallel nature. Unfortunately, floating-point neural networks require large amounts of gate space, which in turn results in having to utilise an expensive FPGA. Fractional FPGA Neural Networks explores an alternative numeric system, where integer based fractions are used in the computations, rather than floating point. The book focuses on a number of issues and solutions with such a method, including modified training mechanisms. Finally, a case study of emotion recognition is explored. This book should be especially useful to academics seeking real-time computation networks, or even looking at alternative ideas for neural network design. Professionals in industry, exploring a practical solution to their data learning issues may also find the subject appealing, along with a wider community interested in researching into neural networks.
Today's computer systems are based on control-flow model of computation which is beset with limitations when exploiting parallelism. Data-flow model of computation, though parallel in nature, is plagued with its own bottlenecks. This book provides a window into an alternative model of computation called associative dataflow which is expected to usher in a new era of computing in the years to come. The book describes the associative dataflow model in comparison with the control-flow and data- flow models of today and then presents design of a processor which implements this model in hardware. The design has been simulated and prototyped using commercially available software tools and shows considerable improvement in performance compared to currently existing dataflow machines. It is hoped that this book will kindle renewed interest among graduate computer science and engineering students, practicing engineers, and computer architects to propose, improve, and develop newer models of computation so as to reap maximum advantage from the recent advances in the integrated circuit technology.
As focus in modern computer games shifts from purely realistic rendering to a more realistic environment for the user, interactive physical simulation of a broad range of objects - demanding a believable appearance, rather than physical correctness - becomes increasingly important. Traditionally physically based simulation is done on the CPU, however the pace of innovation in graphics hardware is staggering and continues to outpace processor development. In addition, the programmable rendering pipeline makes graphics hardware capable of doing much more than simply rendering a scene. This book combines both aspects by presenting an approach of performing physically based modelling solely on graphics hardware by using the concept of Memory Objects. The algorithms presented in this work allow for the simulation of cloth, rigid and soft bodies. The main aspects of physically based modelling discussed in this book are: verlet integration, containing shape, collision detection and collision response.
With the improving capabilities of current hardware systems, there are ever growing possibilities to store and manipulate videos in a digital format, leading to a growing number of video archives. People build their own digital libraries from materials created through digital cameras and camcorders, and use systems such as YouTube to place this material on the web. Unfortunately, this data creation prowess is not matched by any comparable tools to organise and retrieve video information. There is a need to create new retrieval engines to assist the users in searching and finding video scenes they would like to see from many different video files. Unlike text retrieval systems, retrieval on digital video datasets is facing a serious problem: The Semantic Gap. This is the difference between low-level data representation of videos and the higher level concepts user associates with video. This book introduces several approaches to bridge this semantic gap, explains different evaluation strategies and presents state-of-the-art video retrieval tools. The target audience is everyone who is interested in getting to know the research approaches that led to the popular video retrieval tools.
Semiconductor Industry is the main driving force for technology innovation and "New Economy" markets. The ongoing development of faster integrated circuits with higher device density has led to highly complex and sophisticated products which are widely accepted by society. A modern integrated circuit cannot be developed without the massive use of computer aided design (CAD) in any step of the complex flow from the idea to the final product. This work concentrates on technology computer aided design (TCAD) and its integration into the semiconductor fabrication process flow. An analysis of the current semiconductor manufacturing flow and its implications on how TCAD can be integrated into it is shown. By doing a structured approach it is demonstrated how such a system can be implemented in real conditions. Furthermore the flexibility and advantages of the integration is shown by a couple of real examples. This book is intended to be a reference to TCAD engineers which are facing support requests from manufacturing and to manufacturing engineers to get new ideas of how TCAD can be used in their every day business.

This book provides practicing scientists and engineers a tutorial on the fundamental concepts and use of microcontrollers. Today, microcontrollers, or single integrated circuit (chip) computers, play critical roles in almost all instrumentation and control systems. Most existing books arewritten for undergraduate and graduate students taking an electrical and/or computer engineering course. Furthermore, these texts have beenwritten with a particular model of microcontroller as the target discussion. These textbooks also require a requisite knowledge of digital design fundamentals. This textbook presents the fundamental concepts common to all microcontrollers. Our goals are to present the over-arching theory of microcontroller operation and to provide a detailed discussion on constituent subsystems available in most microcontrollers. With such goals, we envision that the theory discussed in this book can be readily applied to a wide variety of microcontroller technologies, allowing practicing scientists and engineers to become acquainted with basic concepts prior to beginning a design involving a specific microcontroller. We have found that the fundamental principles of a given microcontroller are easily transferred to other controllers. Although this is a relatively small book, it is packed with useful information for quickly coming up to speed on microcontroller concepts.
In this book, PSpice for Filters and Transmission Lines, we examine a range of active and passive filters where each design is simulated using the latest Cadence Orcad V10.5 PSpice capture software. These filters cannot match the very high order digital signal processing (DSP) filters considered in PSpice for Digital Signal Processing, but nevertheless these filters have many uses. The active filters considered were designed using Butterworth and Chebychev approximation loss functions rather than using the 'cookbook approach' so that the final design will meet a given specification in an exacting manner. Switched-capacitor filter circuits are examined and here we see how useful PSpice/Probe is in demonstrating how these filters, filter, as it were. Two-port networks are discussed as an introduction to transmission lines and, using a series of problems, we demonstrate quarter-wave and single-stub matching. The concept of time domain reflectrometry as a fault location tool on transmission lines is then examined. In the last chapter we discuss the technique of importing and exporting speech signals into a PSpice schematic using a tailored-made program Wav2ascii. This is a novel technique that greatly extends the simulation boundaries of PSpice. Various digital circuits are also examined at the end of this chapter to demonstrate the use of the bus structure and other techniques.
PSpice for Digital Signal Processing is the last in a series of five books using Cadence Orcad PSpice version 10.5 and introduces a very novel approach to learning digital signal processing (DSP). DSP is traditionally taught using Matlab/Simulink software but has some inherent weaknesses for students particularly at the introductory level. The 'plug in variables and play' nature of these software packages can lure the student into thinking they possess an understanding they don't actually have because these systems produce results quicklywithout revealing what is going on. However, it must be said that, for advanced level work Matlab/Simulink really excel. In this book we start by examining basic signals starting with sampled signals and dealing with the concept of digital frequency. The delay part, which is the heart of DSP, is explained and applied initially to simple FIR and IIR filters. We examine linear time invariant systems starting with the difference equation and applying the z-transform to produce a range of filter type i.e. low-pass, high-pass and bandpass. The important concept of convolution is examined and here we demonstrate the usefulness of the 'log' command in Probe for giving the correct display to demonstrate the 'flip n slip' method. Digital oscillators, including quadrature carrier generation, are then examined. Several filter design methods are considered and include the bilinear transform, impulse invariant, and window techniques. Included also is a treatment of the raised-cosine family of filters. A range of DSP applications are then considered and include the Hilbert transform, single sideband modulator using the Hilbert transform and quad oscillators, integrators and differentiators. Decimation and interpolation are simulated to demonstrate the usefulness of the multi-sampling environment. Decimation is also applied in a treatment on digital receivers. Lastly, we look at some musical applications for DSP such as reverberation/echo using real-world signals imported into PSpice using the program Wav2Ascii. The zero-forcing equalizer is dealt with in a simplistic manner and illustrates the effectiveness of equalizing signals in a receiver after transmission.
Finite State Machine Datapath Design, Optimization, and Implementation explores the design space of combined FSM/Datapath implementations. The lecture starts by examining performance issues in digital systems such as clock skew and its effect on setup and hold time constraints, and the use of pipelining for increasing system clock frequency. This is followed by definitions for latency and throughput, with associated resource tradeoffs explored in detail through the use of dataflow graphs and scheduling tables applied to examples taken from digital signal processing applications. Also, design issues relating to functionality, interfacing, and performance for different types of memories commonly found in ASICs and FPGAs such as FIFOs, single-ports, and dual-ports are examined. Selected design examples are presented in implementation-neutral Verilog code and block diagrams, with associated design files available as downloads for both Altera Quartus and Xilinx Virtex FPGA platforms. A working knowledge of Verilog, logic synthesis, and basic digital design techniques is required. This lecture is suitable as a companion to the synthesis lecture titled Introduction to Logic Synthesis using Verilog HDL. How to become a parallel programmer by learning the twenty-one essential components of OpenMP. This book guides readers through the most essential elements of OpenMP-the twenty-one components that most OpenMP programmers use most of the time, known collectively as the "OpenMP Common Core." Once they have mastered these components, readers with no prior experience writing parallel code will be effective parallel programmers, ready to take on more complex aspects of OpenMP. The authors, drawing on twenty years of experience in teaching OpenMP, introduce material in discrete chunks ordered to support effective learning. OpenMP was created in 1997 to make it as simple as possible for applications programmers to write parallel code; since then, it has grown into a huge and complex system. The OpenMP Common Core goes back to basics, capturing the inherent simplicity of OpenMP. After introducing the fundamental concepts of parallel computing and history of OpenMP's development, the book covers topics including the core design pattern of parallel computing, the parallel and worksharing-loop constructs, the OpenMP data environment, and tasks. Two chapters on the OpenMP memory model are uniquely valuable for their pedagogic approach. The key for readers is to work through the material, use an OpenMP-enabled compiler, and write programs to experiment with each OpenMP directive or API routine as it is introduced. The book's website, updated continuously, offers a wide assortment of programs and exercises.
