This is practical reference book, which uses simple testing methods within minutes one can confirm whether laptop failure is software or hardware related with a diagnostic accuracy of 99%. Another feature of this book is that one can select a typical repair shortcut thereby saving considerable "swap test" time i.e. avoid trial and error. For most readers, this book will provide most of the failure status information needed. There are thirteen diagnostic flowcharts at the core of this book are marked with the percentage (probability) of the failed component along with its name. The repair shortcuts are intended to help the advanced amateur or technician to quickly repair the laptop and check up the components marked with a high failure rate from the diagnosis flowcharts, and then gradually inspect the components showing lower failure percentage. The book also contains 300 classic repair cases, and dozens of fault detecting methods with application skills. Also adopted here, is a unique mode of operation to repair laptops with simple steps. One can refer to the eight articles in "Analysis and diagnostic table" to find the information matching particular your case. Experience in this book will work for you to become "repair experts" to solve the problems of many laptops.

This book presents the detailed design and implementation of an FPGA-based image and video co- processor. Central to this environment is a hierarchical library of efficient hardware architectures for image and video applications, and a Prolog-based hardware description notation called HIDE. The environment also includes a high level generator which takes image processing high level algorithm descriptions based on the abstractions of image algebra and translates automatically into a HIDE hardware description. The latter is then automatically translated into low level FPGA hardware in EDIF netlist format. Central to the satisfaction of the dual requirement of high level design and low level hardware efficiency is the novel concept of hardware skeletons, which act as a bridge between the two levels. These are reusable architectural frameworks, which can take function blocks and possibly other skeletons as parameters while encapsulating all of the low level hardware dependent optimisations. This is illustrated in this book through a real hardware implementation on a commercial FPGA board.
Embedded Systems are ubiquitous, used in various applications, ranging from low-end electronic appliances to high-end rockets. Security on such systems is a major concern where any useful insight gained by the adversary is harmful. Side Channel Attacks (SCAs) are performed by observing properties such as power usage, processing time and electro magnetic(EM) emissions, to correlate these external manifestations with internal computations. These properties are used to obtain critical information, such as a secret key of a secure application. Power analysis has been the most effective technique to extract secret keys during the execution of cryptographic algorithms using SCAs. This book elaborates on power analysis based side channel attacks detailing all the common attacks and the countermeasures proposed in the past. It also presents novel processor designs to combat against such attacks.
Only recently has the possibility of a universal memory, a fast random access memory that retains its state during complete power-down, turned into a realizable opportunity. Such a memory can eliminate static power, improve system reliability in the face of power interruption, and eliminate the need for a separate FLASH memory module, reducing system component count. One candidate in the race for a universal memory is magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM). In the development of MRAM, design challenges related to isolating memory elements, obtaining a compatible operating point with CMOS technology, and sensing data reliably have emerged. Therefore, there still exists a barrier to achieving the cost and performance characteristics of traditional volatile solid state memories---SRAM and DRAM. In this work, a 4kb MRAM array is designed to evaluate the feasibility of a promising new form of MRAM based on the phenomenon of spin torque transfer switching. The design of the test site and measurement setup is discussed, showing how to explore a multidimensional parameter space of operating conditions to obtain a viable design point for the next generation of MRAM technology.
Hybridization using different soft computing tools has been explored for efficient data mining, clust- ering, and classification. An evolutionary-rough feature selection algorithm has been developed for feature selection and classi- fication of gene expre- ssion patterns. Next A detailed clustering algorithm is developed by integrating the advantage of both rough and fuzzy set theories. The remaining three chapters are devoted for biclustering problem. The whole work of this book is divided into the follow- ing: i) Mining important features from high dimen- sional gene datasets; ii) Biclustering or local stru- cture determination in gene expression data using soft tools; iii) Collaborative clustering for global structure determination in large data; iv) Covering various machine learning and bioinformatics applica- tions using soft computing; and v) A special chapter is written for designing a new paradigm for optimi- zation. The book focuses on some applications of the newly developed soft computing based methodologies for machine learning, optimization, and bioinformatic Problems. The book covers how to design a hybrid system for real life problem solving.
Today's computer systems are based on control-flow model of computation which is beset with limitations when exploiting parallelism. Data-flow model of computation, though parallel in nature, is plagued with its own bottlenecks. This book provides a window into an alternative model of computation called associative dataflow which is expected to usher in a new era of computing in the years to come. The book describes the associative dataflow model in comparison with the control-flow and data- flow models of today and then presents design of a processor which implements this model in hardware. The design has been simulated and prototyped using commercially available software tools and shows considerable improvement in performance compared to currently existing dataflow machines. It is hoped that this book will kindle renewed interest among graduate computer science and engineering students, practicing engineers, and computer architects to propose, improve, and develop newer models of computation so as to reap maximum advantage from the recent advances in the integrated circuit technology.
Stereo vision is one of the most effective methods used in the field of machine visionary because of its high measurement accuracy compared to other techniques. This mimics the biological vision system where streams of image pairs are captured by the human eyes and processed by the brain in order to reconstruct a 3D realization of the surrounding environment. This method is based on matching the corresponding points in two images in order to generate 3D depth maps of the environment scenes. Applying stereo matching in computer hardware, however, is challenging because it is computationally expensive and requires real-time processing of high resolution images; as the case in autonomous vehicles. This book outlines a new proposed method to rectify high resolution images in real-time based on high speed data streaming protocol, which is implemented on FPGA. This method is still under research and development by Dr. John Morris and his research group in UoA for further refinement.
A variety of VLSI design simulation software packages are available. These software packages are based on Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Electrical Design Automation (EDA) tools. These software packages provide the design, functional simulation, physical layout and design testing before a chip can be manufactured. The objective of this book is to develop a VLSI design simulation software that has familiar and easier user interface and as good as other leading software packages but less expensive. We compared the various features of VLSI simulation software offered by the leading software packages in the industry. This effort is quite novel. Microsoft Excel has capability of performing arithmetic and logical calculations and it has a power of logical decision making. We started with very simple tasks using Microsoft Excel's built in tools (objects) such as charts and graphs, Auto-Shapes, spreadsheet interface and advanced tools like macros and VBA. VBA (Visual Basic for Application), a programming language based on Visual Basic, makes Microsoft Excel a powerful candidate for using it as a tool for VLSI Design simulation.
Neural networks have a proven ability to learn complex data sets, but suffer from the amount of processing time required for large based networks. FPGAs, which have become commonplace since their inception, offer the academic community a way of achieving real-time computation due to their parallel nature. Unfortunately, floating-point neural networks require large amounts of gate space, which in turn results in having to utilise an expensive FPGA. Fractional FPGA Neural Networks explores an alternative numeric system, where integer based fractions are used in the computations, rather than floating point. The book focuses on a number of issues and solutions with such a method, including modified training mechanisms. Finally, a case study of emotion recognition is explored. This book should be especially useful to academics seeking real-time computation networks, or even looking at alternative ideas for neural network design. Professionals in industry, exploring a practical solution to their data learning issues may also find the subject appealing, along with a wider community interested in researching into neural networks.

As focus in modern computer games shifts from purely realistic rendering to a more realistic environment for the user, interactive physical simulation of a broad range of objects - demanding a believable appearance, rather than physical correctness - becomes increasingly important. Traditionally physically based simulation is done on the CPU, however the pace of innovation in graphics hardware is staggering and continues to outpace processor development. In addition, the programmable rendering pipeline makes graphics hardware capable of doing much more than simply rendering a scene. This book combines both aspects by presenting an approach of performing physically based modelling solely on graphics hardware by using the concept of Memory Objects. The algorithms presented in this work allow for the simulation of cloth, rigid and soft bodies. The main aspects of physically based modelling discussed in this book are: verlet integration, containing shape, collision detection and collision response.

With the improving capabilities of current hardware systems, there are ever growing possibilities to store and manipulate videos in a digital format, leading to a growing number of video archives. People build their own digital libraries from materials created through digital cameras and camcorders, and use systems such as YouTube to place this material on the web. Unfortunately, this data creation prowess is not matched by any comparable tools to organise and retrieve video information. There is a need to create new retrieval engines to assist the users in searching and finding video scenes they would like to see from many different video files. Unlike text retrieval systems, retrieval on digital video datasets is facing a serious problem: The Semantic Gap. This is the difference between low-level data representation of videos and the higher level concepts user associates with video. This book introduces several approaches to bridge this semantic gap, explains different evaluation strategies and presents state-of-the-art video retrieval tools. The target audience is everyone who is interested in getting to know the research approaches that led to the popular video retrieval tools.
Semiconductor Industry is the main driving force for technology innovation and "New Economy" markets. The ongoing development of faster integrated circuits with higher device density has led to highly complex and sophisticated products which are widely accepted by society. A modern integrated circuit cannot be developed without the massive use of computer aided design (CAD) in any step of the complex flow from the idea to the final product. This work concentrates on technology computer aided design (TCAD) and its integration into the semiconductor fabrication process flow. An analysis of the current semiconductor manufacturing flow and its implications on how TCAD can be integrated into it is shown. By doing a structured approach it is demonstrated how such a system can be implemented in real conditions. Furthermore the flexibility and advantages of the integration is shown by a couple of real examples. This book is intended to be a reference to TCAD engineers which are facing support requests from manufacturing and to manufacturing engineers to get new ideas of how TCAD can be used in their every day business.
