The enthusiasm that I have for sports has led me to bring forth a
work, encompassing many sports in which African Americans were not
always privy to participate. In the effort to overcome this
inequality, many challenges and struggles were experienced, because
of the deprivation, and have been addressed within these pages.
Much has been achieved as a result of the endurance of these many
African American, legendary athletes. It is very disturbing to know
what we, as African Americans, went through to arrive at where we
are, and now appear to be losing ground. Staying abreast of the
various sports has alerted me to the declination in numbers and
deterioration of African Americans in the sports arena. This
declination is a documented fact and must be expressed in bold
terms. My primary purpose in writing this book, "Ebony Legends in
Sports," is that it will certainly be a wake-up-call, for action,
in the total African American community. My hope is that it will
inspire the youth of this, and future generations, to return to the
glory of the games, that they will become members of athletic
programs, in mass, in their schools, follow through with their
endeavors and persevere, as our legends did.

The summer of 1938 was a pivotal year for baseball and American
history. In that same year, John Jordon "Buck" O'Neil, was a rookie
first baseman playing his first season in the Negro American
League. Born in Carrabelle, Florida, raised in Sarasota and
nicknamed Buck, it had taken five years and five different teams
before the Kansas City, Monarchs finally signed O'Neil to a
contract. Before he could get the starting assignment, though,
O'Neil had to dethrone one of the Negro Leagues' hardest hitting
first basemen, Eldridge Mayweather. In 1938, a time when
African-American hall of fame ballplayers worth millions could be
purchased for pennies on the dollar, times were hard and the
baseball was tough. Kansas City's Monarchs were a blend of youth
and maturity, and one of the best teams in the Negro American
League. Oddly, Kansas City, in spite of winning records against
every team in the Negro American League, failed to win the
first-half or second-half pennant. For the first time ever John
"Buck" O'Neil, Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe and James "Gabby" Kemp
and many others are united together to speak on this celebrated
season. With interviews from Monarchs' players Willard "Sonny"
Brown, Newt Allen and Byron "Mex" Johnson and many others readers
are taken on a road trip around America. Along the way readers,
just as the team did in 1938, come in contact with segregation and
racism as the book helps everyone to relive the glory days of the
Negro Baseball Leagues. Illustrated with over forty historic
photographs, John "Buck" O'Neil, the rookie, the man, the lagacy
1938 is a welcome addition to every baseball fans reading list.
This book is written to tell people that Little League Baseball is
more than just a game. In my 36 years of being in Little League
Baseball, I've seen just about everything. I've seen the way some
coaches teach their players to win a game. As Little League
coaches, umpires, and officials, we should always be building good
relationships with the players, their families, and all other
people who are involved. The important thing is to teach the
players the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play.
It is the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 7 of the 2014 World
Series at Chicago's Historic Wrigley Field. With two on and two out
and the Cubs trailing award-winning veteran pitcher, Leon Chapman
and his Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs' and their fans' dreams of
ending the ballclub's century-plus old championship drought rests
on the shoulders of a GIRL? Will 42-year-old Kim Reedeaux become
each Cub fan's shining heroine or sinister villainess? Will her
archenemy Leon Chapman take the lightning from the overcast October
sky and steal the Cubs' thunder or will he drown in tears of defeat
as he watches his former team live their moment? Follow the twists
and turns, hardships and triumphs that have led the Cubs'
ponytail-wearing shortstop to the opportunity of a lifetime
This is the story of two men who followed their dream of crossing
an ocean and discovered the adventure of a lifetime. Former army
officer, mountaineer and film stuntsman Mike Noel-Smith couldn't
resist when his friend Rob Abernethy called him up one day and
suggested the ultimate challenge - becoming the first Britons to
row the Indian Ocean. The pair took advice from expert seamen,
studied weather charts, trained for months, and planned the trip
down to the last detail. But like many before them, they discovered
that the sea is a dangerous and ungovernable mistress, capable of
turning from calm to lethal rage. This is a pacey, often funny, and
ultimately touching tale of courage, fear, love and bloody
mindedness in the face of the unconquerable power of the ocean.
Adventurous readers will wish they'd been able to join Mike and Rob
on their unforgettable trip, sharing every twist and turn, triumph
and disaster. The rest will be glad they stayed at home and enjoyed
the book!

'A wonderful book. Thoughtful...fascinating' Malcolm Gladwell Do
you believe some people are born athletes? Is sporting talent
innate or something that can be achieved through endurance and
practise? In this ground-breaking and entertaining exploration of
athletic success, award-winning writer David Epstein gets to the
heart of the great nature vs. nurture debate, and explodes myths
about how and why humans excel. Along the way, Epstein: - Exposes
the flaws in the so-called 10,000-hour rule that states that
rigorous practice from a young age is the only route to success. -
Shows why some skills that we imagine are innate are not - like the
bullet-fast reactions of a baseball player. - Uncovers why other
characteristics that we assume are entirely voluntary, like the
motivation to practice, might in fact have important genetic
components. Throughout, The Sports Gene forces us to rethink the
very nature of success.
The study of tourism and indeed the tourism industry is changing
constantly. Contemporary Tourism: an international approach
presents a new and refreshing approach to the study of tourism,
considering issues such as the changing world order, destination
marketing, tourism ethics and pro-poor tourism. In particular, it
highlights the ongoing threats from terrorism and health scares
faced by the tourism industry today, and discusses the related
security and risk management strategies, illustrating the potential
implications for the patterns and flow of tourism in the future.
Divided into five sections, each chapter has a thorough learning
structure including chapter objectives, examples, discussion
points, self review questions, checklists and case studies. Cases
will be both thematic and destination-based and always
international. They will be used to emphasise the relationship
between general principles and the practice of tourism looking at
areas such as business and special interest tourism and the role of
technology. The five sections will cover: Contemporary Tourism
Systems; The Contemporary Tourist; The Contemporary Tourist
Destination; Tourism Futures; Teaching and Studying Contemporary
Tourism. The text will also provide an annotated, authoritative and
thorough set of resources to guide the reader through the topic
area including online resource sites for both students and
lecturers.
I grew up in Washington, DC, in the public housing system. The most
positive influences in helping to keep me on the right path were
the Police Boys Club and DC Rec Department. I've always felt it was
important to give to young children what was given to me in my
youth.

The first book of its kind devoted to this topic, this
comprehensive text/reference presents state-of-the-art research and
reviews current challenges in the application of computer vision to
problems in sports. Opening with a detailed introduction to the use
of computer vision across the entire life-cycle of a sports event,
the text then progresses to examine cutting-edge techniques for
tracking the ball, obtaining the whereabouts and pose of the
players, and identifying the sport being played from video footage.
The work concludes by investigating a selection of systems for the
automatic analysis and classification of sports play. The insights
provided by this pioneering collection will be of great interest to
researchers and practitioners involved in computer vision, sports
analysis and media production.

In this book, the subject of Copper Work as it may be introduced
into the public school, is treated to the extent of specifying an
equiptment and suggesting some of the possibilities of a course.
Not only will there be found an abundance of illustrative material
on this subject, consisting of drawings and photographs of various
objects executed, by upper grammer and high school pupils but also
a detailed description of the processes necessary for the execution
of many of the designs. It is hoped that this volume will be
especially helpful to teachers in the manual arts who are trying to
introduce Metal work into the regular school course. Much of the
information contained within this early work will still be found
useful and practical today. Many of the earliest books,
