Introduction: In preparing the volume on Pike and Perch Fishing for
the anglers library, the editors have availed themselves of the
labours of a thoroughly practical angler of of long and varied
experience. Perhaps there is no one living who has had better
knowledge than Mr Jardine of how, when and where to take these
sporting fish; and he has made it his study to supply useful
information and describe the latest and best tackle rather than to
allure the general reader with a mere addition to the copious
literature on angling. The contents are extensively illustrated
throughout with much of the information still being useful and
practical today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those
dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in

Fistic combat represents the greatest human drama in all of
sport. Roman gladiators thrilled citizens and emperors alike when
they entered the octagon to face an intense, life-threatening
experience. Boxing, the sport of kings, also has its roots in the
ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. Banned in 500 A.D. by the
Emperor Theodoric, it resurfaced twelve centuries later in England.
John Milton praised it as a noble art for building character in
young men, and sports writer A.J. Leibling dubbed it the Sweet
Science. Many of its major protagonists - men such as Joe Louis,
Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali - have become transcendent,
near-mythic heroes. But boxing is not the only combat sport, and
mixed martial arts, in all their ferocious beauty, represent the
fastest growing sports genre in the world. Ultimate Fighting
Championships (UFC) has joined boxing in paying seven figures to
some of its champions, and draws millions in its pay-per-view
events. This book details leading figures in boxing, sumo
wrestling, kickboxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, and mixed martial
arts (including organizations such as Ultimate Fighting, PRIDE,
K-1, Total Combat, and SportFighting). Over 150 entries cover
champions, contenders, and other famous combatants from all over
the world, as well as legendary promoters, managers, trainers, and
events. Also included in this encyclopedia are sidebars on
controversies, highlights, brief bios, and other noteworthy events,
along with a general timeline.

AUTHORS NOTE: WRITING a history of mountaineering when so many
books have already been devoted to one or father aspect of the
subject is a problem, the solution of which has not always been
easy to find. I have attempted, moreover, to write it direct into
English, which is not my mother tongue, and that has added to my
problems. I have tried to give a wide interpretation of the
subject, investi gating many aspects which had been often neglected
this involved much complicated research and I had to ask many
questions, some of which were probably thought quite irrelevant by
those I approached. I had to limit my research to the Alps. A world
history of mountaineering was not to be thought of, and even moun
taineering in Europe was too big a subject to be dealt with in a
coherent way. As a matter of fact, all the other mountain ranges
the Pyrenees, Caucasus, Carpathians, Scandinavian were developed by
climbers after the Alps, in order to carry and test elsewhere the
technique discovered in the mountains of Switzer land and Savoy.
FOREWORD by F. S. SMYTHE: THIS is a remarkable book for two
reasons. It is the first really comprehensive work to be published
in this country on the history of mountaineering, from the earliest
travellers in the Alps down to the present-day climbing technique,
which expresses itself on mountain sides believed impossible. The
other remarkable fact is that it has been written by Mile Engel, a
Frenchwoman, in English, and is not even a translation of any of
her numerous works in the French language. It might indeed have
been written by a scholarly Englishman who not only possessed an
excellent vocabulary but a wealth of synonym and metaphor combined
with a rhythmicalflow of prose. Having had the privilege of being
acquainted with Mile Engel for many years, I know how much work and
research she has put into her book, and from the letters and
archives of past mountaineers, scientists and travellers in the
Alps she has dis covered matter of great value to all interested in
the history of mountaineering and Alpine adventure. She is herself
a moun taineer with a wide circle of mountaineering friends and
acquain tances...

Born in Lake Charles and raised in the nearby town of Sulphur,
David speaks vividly of his unique family upbringing and his
experiences while growing up in Southwest Louisiana. He discusses
with passion how hunting, fishing, rodeo, baseball and football
were all integral parts of everyday life for the hard-living,
God-fearing people in this rural Cajun community. You'll be
introduced to high school coaching legend, Shannon Suarez, and to
many of David's teachers, coaches and teammates who he loved and
respected. Voted Louisiana's All-State quarterback and Outstanding
Offensive Player at the age of 16, David was recruited away from
Louisiana State University by Texas A&M's Emory Bellard to play
football for the Fightin' Texas Aggies. It was a decision David
would feel extremely remorseful about only months later. This
recruitment by Bellard of the pass-happy left-hander to quarterback
his ground-oriented Wishbone offense immediately created tensions
between the two. These philosophical differences would remain
unresolved and personality clashes between the two would quickly
ensue. Their estranged relationship and the reasons for it would
negatively affect every football team at A&M for years to come.
Now for the first time, David recounts in his own words this
controversial story in splendid detail with no holds barred. He
fully examines the contentious relationship with his college coach,
the in-house cover-ups regarding his injuries, and the needles
masking their pain. He talks with anguish about the guts and
stamina it took to withstand the pressures of being a four-year
starting quarterback at this major university. David doesn't mince
words regarding any individual or situation he was confronted with.
He takes you visually both onto the playing field and into the
smoky back rooms with equal flair and intensity. "Rocky," "Rudy"
and "One on One," please step aside. You ain't seen nothin' yet.
"Tough Bears Don't Dance" continues Ernest's experiences in
far-flung hunting vistas that include Alaska and its peninsula,
Castro's Cuba, Colombia, Honduras Canada's Lac Seul Wilderness, the
Eastern Shore of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay for Canada Geese, and a
revisit to some of Africa where the hunting in these tales of
adventure take a back seat to saving his life, as well as
encounters with emerald smugglers, the Colombian Medelin Cartel
bosses, prostitution, confrontation with Russian "freedom fighters
"from Nicaragua's revolution, murder, and withch doctors, being
attacked by a rqavenoous bear a a Cuban dog, being lost in a frozen
wilderness tundra, and assorted otyher interesteing distractions,
with a little humor tossed into the mix now and then.
