This lively and intriguing study looks at the way sports both reflected and shaped Victorian society. Just as our own games have a lot to say about modern American culture, so sports are a prism through which we can gain valuable insights into Victorian society. The Sporting Life: Victorian Sports and Games is an engaging and perceptive account of how sport developed during Britain's heyday, who played (and who wasn't allowed to play), and what it all conveys about gender, race, imperialism, and national pride. Drawing extensively on 19th-century writings, The Sporting Life begins with a survey of sports in pre-Victorian England and the impact of industrialism in the early 19th century. We read of the effects of evangelicalism and utilitarianism, both of which first opposed sport, then used it for their own purposes. We learn of the association of sports with masculinity, an identification women challenged late in the century. Finally we learn how English sports became part of the imperial game, used to promote—and resist—the spread of Victoria's vast empire.

Mark Twain once described golf as "a good walk spoiled." Most golfers have had a round (or two) where these words rang especially true. That is because golf is a game where failure is unavoidable. Every shot, every lie, is a unique event involving a multitude of intricate variables, any of which can cause a shot to go awry. But fear not-help is here!Former profession golfer Bob Glanville shares the knowledge he has gained from more than half a century of playing and teaching golf. In "Golf: The Game of Lessening Failures, " he teaches golfers to eliminate their golfing failures, one swing at a time. He dispenses his wit and wisdom through sixteen chapters that touch upon nearly every aspect of the game, including the equipment, the terminology, the etiquette, and the origins of the PGA. Through it all, readers learn to improve their game physically and mentally, as well as by using a set of clubs that will help them get the most out of every swing. The course awaits.

Nearly everyone in America is interested in sports. However, many people are becoming disenchanted. Media coverage is dominated by scandalous stories involving many of America's best known figures in nearly all major sports. Fans have come to see professional athletes, in general, as being overpaid, immature and obnoxious. Ticket prices have become outrageously exorbitant. Many fans feel that they have been betrayed by something that they once held so dear. One Fan Left Behind, written by a typical, longtime sports fan, speaks to and for those fans. Some of the issues addressed are controversial and may serve as catalysts for further thought. Many dubious things about sports are blithely taken for granted. For instance, did you ever wonder why it is that if a basketball player is fouled in the act of shooting 25 feet from the basket, (a shot which he was probably going to miss anyway) he gets to move ten feet closer to the hoop to shoot three free throws? But if he is fouled in the act of shooting a lay up, (a shot which he rarely misses) he has to move several feet further from the basket to shoot only two free throws. One Fan Left Behind is written in a style which is lighthearted, entertaining and at times, tongue-in-cheek. Portions could be used as a stand-up comedy routine. Other segments can be described as nostalgic, poignant and/or deadly serious. The topic is singularly timely. So many things happen every day that it was difficult for the author to finish writing this book. He had to simply drop the pencil and stop writing. The story is still unfolding.
