Projectile Dynamics in Sport - Principles and Applications (Hardcover): Colin White Projectile Dynamics in Sport - Principles and Applications (Hardcover)
Colin White
R4,461 Discovery Miles 44 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

  • How can we predict the trajectory of a baseball from bat to outfield?
  • How do the dimples in a golf ball influence its flight from tee to pin?
  • What forces determine the path of a soccer ball steered over a defensive wall by an elite player?

An understanding of the physical processes involved in throwing, hitting, firing and releasing sporting projectiles is essential for a full understanding of the science that underpins sport. This is the first book to comprehensively examine those processes and to explain the factors governing the trajectories of sporting projectiles once they are set in motion.

From a serve in tennis to the flight of a ?human projectile? over a high jump bar, this book explains the universal physical and mathematical principles governing movement in sport, and then shows how those principles are applied in specific sporting contexts. Divided into two sections, addressing theory and application respectively, the book explores key concepts such as:

  • friction, spin, drag, impact and bounce
  • computer and mathematical modelling
  • variable sensitivity
  • the design of sports equipment
  • materials science.

Richly illustrated throughout, and containing a wealth of research data as well as worked equations and examples, this book is essential reading for all serious students of sports biomechanics, sports engineering, sports technology, sports equipment design and sports performance analysis.

Sport as History - Essays in Honour of Wray Vamplew (Hardcover): Tony Collins Sport as History - Essays in Honour of Wray Vamplew (Hardcover)
Tony Collins
R2,650 Discovery Miles 26 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Published to mark the career of one of sports history's pioneers, this book traces the evolution of sport across three continents. It brings together some of sports history's leading scholars to investigate not only the history of sport but also how that history is written.

This Festschrift marks the retirement of Professor Wray Vamplew ? an internationally-renowned leader in the field of sports history. His 1976 book The Turf was one of the very first academic histories of sport and he has been a prolific writer, scholar and teacher for almost forty years. No-one has played such an important role in the field of sports history across North America, Europe and Australia. President of the Australian, Australian Society of Sports History (ASSH), the British Society of Sports History (BSSH), the European Committee for the History of Sport (CESH) and the International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sport (ISHPES), Vamplew is currently editor of the North American Society for Sports History's (NASSH) journal, the Journal of Sport History.

This collection reflects his interests and his appeal across the three continents: essays deal with sport in America, Australia, Britain and Ireland and focus on the themes of national and regional identity, gender, trade unionism in sport and historiographical debates. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the history of sport and how it is studied today.

This book was published as a special issue of Sport in History.

The Changing Face of Cricket - From Imperial to Global Game (Hardcover): Dominic Malcolm, Jon Gemmell, Nalin Mehta The Changing Face of Cricket - From Imperial to Global Game (Hardcover)
Dominic Malcolm, Jon Gemmell, Nalin Mehta
R3,283 R2,659 Discovery Miles 26 590 Save R624 (19%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For cricket enthusiasts there is nothing to match the meaningful contests and excitement generated by the game's subtle shifts in play. Conversely, huge swathes of the world's population find cricket the most obscure and bafflingly impenetrable of sports. The Changing Face of Cricket attempts to account for this paradox. The Changing Face of Cricket provides an overview of the various ways in which social scientists have analyzed the game's cultural impact. The book's international analysis encompasses Australia, the Caribbean, England, India, Ireland, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Its interdisciplinary approach allies anthropology, history, literary criticism, political studies and sociology with contributions from cricket administrators and journalists. The collection addresses historical and contemporary issues such as gender equality, global sports development, the impact of cricket mega-events, and the growing influence of commercial and television interests culminating in the Twenty20 revolution. Whether one loves or hates the game, understands what turns square legs into fine legs, or how mid-offs become silly, The Changing Face of Cricket will enlighten the reader on the game's cultural contours and social impact and prove to be the essential reader in cricket studies. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Bodily Democracy - Towards a Philosophy of Sport for All (Hardcover): Henning Eichberg Bodily Democracy - Towards a Philosophy of Sport for All (Hardcover)
Henning Eichberg
R4,013 Discovery Miles 40 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sport has gained increasing importance for welfare society. In this process, however, the term of ?sport? has become less and less clear. Larger parts of what nowadays is called ?sport for all? are non-competitive and derived from traditions of gymnastics, dance, festivity, games, outdoor activities, and physical training rather than from classical modern elite sports. This requires new philosophical approaches, as the philosophy of sport, so far, has been dominated by topics of elite sports.

Based on Scandinavian experiences, the book presents studies about festivities of sport, outdoor activities, song and movement, and play and game. The engagement of elderly people challenges sports. Games get political significance in international cooperation, for peace culture and as means against poverty (in Africa). The empirical studies result in philosophical analyses on the recognition of folk practice in education and on relations between identity and recognition.

The study of ?sport for all? opens up for new ways of phenomenological knowledge, moving bottom-up from sport to the philosophy of "the individual," of event, of nature, and of human energy. Popular sports give inspiration to a philosophy of practice as well as to a phenomenological understanding of ?the people?, of civil society and the ?demos? of democracy ? as folk in movement.

This book was published as a special issue in Sport, Ethics and Philosophy.

Sport and Peace-Building in Divided Societies - Playing with Enemies (Paperback): John Sugden, Alan Tomlinson Sport and Peace-Building in Divided Societies - Playing with Enemies (Paperback)
John Sugden, Alan Tomlinson
R1,260 Discovery Miles 12 600 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Sport is a cultural institution that stands at the interface between political and civil society. In divided communities, sport has been an agent of separation, sectarian hatred and violence, but also a highly effective tool for conflict resolution, reconciliation and peace-building. In this important study, John Sugden and Alan Tomlinson draw on their extensive international experience of working with divided communities to develop a methodological and theoretical model for peace-building in sport. The book showcases original case studies from three regions of the world in which sport has played a prominent role in social deconstruction and reconstruction: Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine and South Africa. Combining a wealth of primary and secondary data, the authors chart the rise of the contemporary Sport for Development and Peace movement (SDP) and outline an important new practice-based framework for understanding, researching and working to achieve positive social change in the SDP sector. This is essential reading for any student, researcher or practitioner with an interest in the sociology of sport, sport development, international development, peace studies or conflict resolution.

Muscular Christianity and the Colonial and Post-Colonial World (Paperback): John J. MacAloon Muscular Christianity and the Colonial and Post-Colonial World (Paperback)
John J. MacAloon
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Volume explores the enormous impact the ethos of Muscular Christianity has had an on modern civil society in English-speaking nations and among the peoples they colonized. First codified by British Christian Socialists in the mid-nineteenth century, explicitly religious forms of the ideology have persistently re-emerged over ensuing decades: secularized, essentialized, and normalized versions of the ethos - the public school spirit, the games ethic, moral masculinity, the strenuous life - came to dominate and to spread rapidly across class, status, and gender lines. These developments have been appropriated by the state to support imperial military and colonial projects. Late nineteenth and early twentieth century apologists and critics alike widely understood Muscular Christianity to be a key engine of British colonialism. This text demonstrates the need to re-evaluate the entire history of Muscular Christianity comes chiefly from contemporary post-colonial studies. The papers explore fascinating case materials from Canada, the U.S., India, Japan, Papua, New Guinea, the Spanish Caribbean, and in Britain in a joint effort to outline a truly international, post-colonial sport history.

Fighting Identity - An Ethnography of Kickboxing in East London (Hardcover): Amit Singh Fighting Identity - An Ethnography of Kickboxing in East London (Hardcover)
Amit Singh
R3,764 Discovery Miles 37 640 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book is an immersive ethnographic account of how fighters at a Polish-owned Muay Thai/kickboxing gym in East London seek to reject prior identity markers in favour of constructing one another as the same, as fighters, a category supposedly free from the negative assumptions and limitations associated with prior ascriptions such as race, class, gender and sexuality. It explores questions of subjectivity and identity by examining how and why fighters sought to disavow identity, which involved casting aside pre-established ways of thinking, feeling and acting about constructed differences to forge deep bonds of carnal convivial friendships. Yet, this book argues that becoming a fighter is highly socially contingent and remains subject to rupture due to the durability of taken-for-granted thinking about race, gender and sexuality, which, if drawn upon, could pull people out of the category of fighter and back into longer-standing durable categories. This book deploys Butler's theory of performativity and Bourdieu's conceptualisation of habitus to explore the context-specific ways people transgress identity whilst remaining attentive to the constrained nature of agency. The book is intended for undergraduate and master's students on courses looking at race, racism, gender, social anthropology, sociology and sociology of sport.

Philosophical Perspectives on Gender in Sport and Physical Activity (Hardcover): Paul Davis, Charlene Weaving Philosophical Perspectives on Gender in Sport and Physical Activity (Hardcover)
Paul Davis, Charlene Weaving
R4,143 Discovery Miles 41 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There are a broad variety of sex and gender resonances in sport, from the clash of traditional ideas of femininity and athleticism represented by female athletes, to the culture of homophobia in mainstream male sport. Despite the many sociological and cultural volumes addressing these subjects, this collection is the first to focus on the philosophical writings that they have inspired. The editors have selected twelve of the most thought-provoking philosophical articles on these subjects from the past thirty years, to create a valuable and much needed resource.

Written by established experts from all over the world, the essays in this collection cover four major themes:

  • sport and the construction of the female
  • objectification and the sexualization of sport
  • homophobia
  • sex boundaries: obstruction, naturalization and opposition.

The book gathers a broad range of philosophical viewpoints on gender in sport into one unique source, subjecting the philosophical origins and characteristics of some of the most controversial topics in sport to rigorous scrutiny. With a balance of male and female contributors from both sides of the Atlantic, and a comprehensive introduction and postscript to contextualize the source material, Philosophical Perspectives on Gender in Sport and Physical Activity is essential reading for all students of the philosophy of sport, sport and gender, and feminist philosophy.

Big Little Hotel - Small Hotels Designed by Architects (Hardcover): Donna Kacmar Big Little Hotel - Small Hotels Designed by Architects (Hardcover)
Donna Kacmar
R3,756 Discovery Miles 37 560 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book showcases twenty different small hotels, all located in the US, designed by architects who use light and materials in interesting and intentional ways. The designs also deliberately connect to their local history, context, or land - in many cases all three. Both the architecture and the operations harmonize with the place, whether that is a bustling city, small town, or natural area. Many are new buildings but some are adaptive reuse projects or renovations of historic properties, extending the connectivity of the place into the future. A condensed history of lodging helps to place the many typologies and histories of hospitality in relationship to world events and includes the many factors that influence hotel development such as business practices, technology, and even politics. Hotels are influenced by larger trends and innovations in hospitality such as the emergence of a variety of creative possibilities for future travel. A final chapter includes speculation on travel trends and encourages us all to wander more intentionally.

Alan Metcalfe; Series edited by J.A. Mangan, Boria Majumdar
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Amusements they must have, or life would hardly be worth living...' Newcastle Weekly Chronicle, 1895 This text explores life in the mining villages of the north-east of England in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - a time of massive social and industrial change. The sporting lives of these communities are often marginalized by historians, but this thoroughly researched account reveals how play as well as work were central to the lives of the working classes. Miners contributed significantly to the economic success of the north-east during this time, yet living conditions in the mining villages were 'horrendous'. Sport and recreation were essential to bring meaning and pleasure to mining families, and were fundamental to the complex social relationships within and between communities. Features of this extensive text include: * analysis of the physical, social and economic structures that determined the leisure lives of the mining villages * the role of 'traditional' and 'new' sports * comparisons with other British regions.

Globalization is effecting a close convergence of sport and foreign policy. In order to respond to novel social, political, cultural and economic pressures, states are increasingly turning to sport as a foreign policy instrument; and they cannot ignore the corresponding influence that global sport has on their core interests. This book is devoted to exploring this relationship in detail. Although any examination of sport and foreign policy inevitably focuses on issues related to both politics and international relations, the primary intention here is to consider the dimensions associated with foreign policy. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Brian Stoddart
R4,000 Discovery Miles 40 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In addition to being an internationally recognised pioneer of sports history, Brian Stoddart has also been a leading thinker and influence in the field. That influence has crossed several areas of history, sociology, business, politics and media aspects of sports studies, and has drawn deeply upon his own training in Asian studies. His work has been characterised by cross-disciplinary work from the outset, and has encompassed some very different geographical areas as well as crossing from academic outlets to media commentary. As a result, his influential work has appeared in many different locations, and it has been difficult for a wide variety of readers to access it fully and easily. This volume draws together, in the one place for the first time, some of his most important academic and journalistic work. Importantly, the pieces are drawn together by an intellectual/autobiographical commentary that locates each piece in a wider social and cultural framework.
