Multidirectional Speed in Sport - Research to Application (Paperback): Paul Jones, Thomas Dos'Santos Multidirectional Speed in Sport - Research to Application (Paperback)
Paul Jones, Thomas Dos'Santos
R1,174 Discovery Miles 11 740 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

During field and court-based sports, players are continually required to perceive their environment within a match and select and perform the most appropriate action to achieve their immediate goal within that match instance. This ability is commonly known as agility, considered a vital quality in such sports and may incorporate a variety of locomotion and instantaneous actions. Multidirectional speed is a global term to describe the competency and capacity to perform such actions, to accelerate, decelerate, change direction and ultimately maintain speed in multiple directions and movements within the context of sports specific scenarios, encompassing many of these agility, speed, and related qualities. Multidirectional speed in sport depends on a multitude of factors including perceptual-cognitive abilities, physical qualities, and the technical ability to perform the abovementioned actions. Multidirectional Speed in Sport: Research to Application reviews the science of multidirectional speed and translates this information into real-world application in order to provide a resource for practitioners to develop multidirectional speed with athletes, bringing together knowledge from a wealth of world-leading researchers and applied practitioners in the area of 'speed and agility' to provide a complete resource to assist practitioners in designing effective multidirectional speed development programmes. This text is critical reading for undergraduate and graduate sports science students, all individuals involved in training athletes (e.g., coaches, physiotherapists, athletic trainers) along with researchers in the field of sports science and sports medicine.

Game On - Shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year & Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year... Game On - Shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Book of the Year & Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year (Hardcover)
Sue Anstiss
R472 Discovery Miles 4 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Book Awards 2022 Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2021 Sport has an extraordinary, unique capacity to challenge and change society - to bring joy and hope; to improve physical and mental health, reduce loneliness and build self-esteem and happiness. It's also a multi-billion-pound commercial industry that can transform lives, businesses, nations and regions. Why has half the population been deprived of access to something so culturally powerful? In recent years, the landscape for women's sport has finally begun to shift. We've seen significant increases in investment, spectators and media coverage. More women as professional athletes and taking influential roles as board directors, editors, officials and CEOs. Yet female athletes still don't get equal opportunities or funding. In many sports, women receive less prize money, lower sponsorship revenues and a tiny fraction of the media coverage. Drawing on her own experiences, and interviews with high profile Olympic and Paralympic champions, broadcasters, journalists, sports scientists, CEOs, officials and sponsors, Sue Anstiss investigates why women have been excluded from the world of sport for centuries - and why we are now witnessing positive change as never before. Game On is a celebration of the trailblazing women opening doors for others and a manifesto for women's sport - a rallying cry to ensure the progress we are currently seeing goes from strength to strength.

Sports Through the Lens of Economic History (Hardcover): Richard Pomfret, John K. Wilson Sports Through the Lens of Economic History (Hardcover)
Richard Pomfret, John K. Wilson
R2,605 Discovery Miles 26 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From professional team sports to international events such as the Olympics and Tour de France, the modern sports industry continues to attract a large number of spectators and participants. This book, edited by John K. Wilson and Richard Pomfret, analyzes the economic evolution of sports over the last 150 years, from a pastime activity to a big business enterprise. It begins at a time when entrepreneurs and players first started making money from professional sports leagues, through to the impact of radio and TV in the twentieth century, and on to the present day. Using examples from sports across the world, the chapters cover such important issues as player migration, labor market restrictions, stadium arrangements and the rise and fall of workplace provisions. Unlike most sports economic texts, the contributors featured here provide insights into the historical origins of many practices and policies peculiar to the industry. This historical perspective casts light onto the development of practices, such as labor market regulations and public policies, which have become more prevalent in the modern age. The non-technical, user-friendly nature of this book will appeal to many students, particularly those enrolled in sports economics courses - a field of study which is increasingly common. Academics will also find this book to be a timely reference for their research and teaching. Contributors include: L. Borrowman, A. Carter, J. Cranfield, L. Frost, A.K. Halabi, K. Inwood, A. Kawaura, S. La Croix, M. Lightbody, J.-F. Mignot, R. Pomfret, J.A. Ross, W. Vamplew, J.K. Wilson

The Ball in the Air - A Golfing Adventure (Hardcover): Michael Bamberger The Ball in the Air - A Golfing Adventure (Hardcover)
Michael Bamberger
R715 R405 Discovery Miles 4 050 Save R310 (43%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From Michael Bamberger, the New York Times bestselling author of Men in Green and our most celebrated contemporary golf writer, The Ball in the Air is a love letter to the amateur game, doing for golf what Friday Night Lights did for football. Over Michael Bamberger’s storied writing career, he has written five golf books and hundreds of Sports Illustrated stories about professional golf and those who play it. That is, the .001 percent. Now “the poet laureate of golf” (GOLF Magazine) trains his eye on the rest of us. In Bamberger’s most intimate book yet, he takes the lid off a game that is both quasi-religious and a nonstop party. In this freewheeling and timeless book, an age-old question is posed early and answered over its pages: Why does the game cast such a spell on us? The Ball in the Air is reported with deep curiosity and written with you-are-there intimacy. It captures golf as a way of life. You get to know a collection of golfers you won’t find elsewhere: a young woman who was raised in a maintenance shed in South Asia and now plays on a college team in Southern California; a middle-aged globe-trotting caddie who is to golf what William Finnegan is to surfing; a renowned senior amateur from Chicago, a finalist in a long-ago British Amateur in St. Andrews, who is giving competitive golf one last go. You join golf societies with members who have fallen into various golfing rabbit holes. (Golden Age architects!) You visit some exalted private courses, and a bunch of good-time-Charlie public ones, across the United States and in the United Kingdom. You hang with a legendary pro whose childlike wonder for the game makes him the ultimate amateur. The Ball in the Air is a fast-moving and spirited tribute to people who can do the whole eat-pray-love thing in one green place (and adjacent clubhouse), lucky souls who, as Bamberger writes, “can marvel at a white ball in a high sky and get lost.”

The Hard Parts - A Story of Courage and Triumph (Hardcover): Oksana Masters The Hard Parts - A Story of Courage and Triumph (Hardcover)
Oksana Masters
R358 Discovery Miles 3 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The remarkable and inspirational story of Oksana Masters, who was born with radiation-induced birth defects and suffered appalling abuse as an orphan, before being adopted and moving to the US, where she went on to triumph over her challenges to win seventeen Paralympic medals in four different sports. Oksana Masters was born in the shadow of Chernobyl, with one kidney, a partial stomach, six toes on each foot, webbed fingers, no right bicep and no thumbs. Her left leg was six inches shorter than her right, and she was missing both tibias. Relinquished to the orphanage system by birth parents daunted by the staggering cost of their child's medical care, Oksana encountered numerous abuses, some horrifying. Salvation came at the age of seven when Gay Masters, an unmarried American professor who saw a photo of the little girl and became haunted by her eyes, waged a two-year war against stubborn adoption authorities to rescue Oksana from her circumstances. In America, Oksana endured years of operations that included a double leg amputation. Still, how could she hope to fit in when there were so many things making her different? As it turned out, she would do much more than fit in. Determined to prove herself and fuelled by a drive to succeed that still smouldered from childhood, Oksana triumphed in not just one sport but four - winning against the world's best in rowing, biathlon, cross-country skiing and road cycling competitions. This is Oksana's astonishing story of journeying through a series of dark tunnels - and how, with her mother's love, she finally found her way into the light. Her message to anyone who doesn't fit in: you can find a place where you excel and where you have worth.
