Sport studies is becoming an increasingly popular discipline, but
the most effective research methods used to investigate the
multi-faceted nature of the empirical sporting world have yet to be
identified. This book makes a timely and relevant contribution to a
broader methodological project as the first systematic examination
and explication of qualitative research methods within sports
studies. Bringing together leading experts in the field,
Qualitative Methods in Sports Studies assesses a variety of
approaches, ranging from social historical, media text, and
personal narrative to ethnographic and interview-based qualitative
research methodologies. Drawing on the diversity of sport studies
literature, contributors outline the major issues and strategies
associated with each method and highlight best practice exemplars
to follow. What are the future opportunities and avenues for
further investigation within sports studies research? What are the
true assets of qualitative data collection and analysis? Answering
these and countless other questions that are critical for the
future of the discipline, this practical research guide is an
essential reference tool for students and scholar

Preface: The annual toll paid to Neptune in valuable lives should
be a sufficient incentive for everyone to learn how to swim. The
teaching of swimming should be made compulsory in every school and
a perfect knowledge exacted of all who have the management of
vessels, as well as those employed thereon. As a preventative of
disease as well as an upbuilder of the body and a moulder of form
it stands without a rival among all the systems devised for the
purpose of physical care and perfection.....It's sixteen chapters
and numerous illustations make this a valuable guide to any swimmer
or teacher. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating
back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in

While flying home to New York after a business trip, Bryan Powers,
Fractional Jet executive, is asked a simple question by his CEO:
"If you could relive one event in your life, what would you

life. He realizes the wish was not as simple as he'd thought.
Seeing his best buddy-who would be killed in Vietnam in 1970-stuns

at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - They burned the old gun that used to
stand in the dark corner up in the garret, close to the stuffed fox
that always grinned so fiercely. Perhaps the reason why he seemed
in such a ghastly rage was that he did not come by his death
fairly. Otherwise his pelt would not have been so perfect. And why
else was he put away up there out of sight? - and so magnificent a
brush as he had too. But there he stood, and mounted guard over the
old flintlock that was so powerful a magnet to us in those days.
Though to go up there alone was no slight trial of moral courage
after listening to the horrible tales of the carters in the stable,
or the old women who used to sit under the hedge in the shade, on
an armful of hay, munching their crusts at luncheon time. The great
cavernous place was full of shadows in the brightest summer day;
for the light came only through the chinks in the shutters. These
were flush with the floor and bolted firmly. The silence was
intense, it being so near the roof and so far away from the
inhabited parts of the house. Yet there were sometimes strange
acoustical effects - as when there came a low tapping at the
shutters, enough to make your heart stand still. There was then
nothing for it but to dash through the doorway into the empty
cheese-room adjoining, which was better lighted. No doubt it was
nothing but the labourers knocking the stakes in for the railing
round the rickyard, but why did it sound just exactly outside the
shutters?
For many sports fans, sporting events set milestones in a person's
life. Ryan Spear used these as a basis for his work as a radio
broadcaster while stationed in the Air Force at Lajes Field in the
Azores, located on a Portuguese-owned island in the middle of the
Atlantic. In "Four Years of Rants and Raves," Spear compiles four
years of monologues delivered over Armed Forces Radio Station as
part of one of the first sports talk shows on the network.
Spear presented the monologues, often referred to as "rants," at
the end of each show as a conversation with the radio listeners.
Spear's rants include the common themes of Major League Baseball,
the Yankees, professional and college football, basketball, and
World Wrestling Entertainment. Spear also offers his thoughts on
the world of pop culture, movies and movie stars, military
experiences, and life's nuances.
With work beginning in mid-January 2003, this collection of
monologues and experiences provides a unique and often humorous
look at four years of Spear's perspective on sports and life.
