This guide to the available literature on sports in American
culture during the last two decades of the 20th century is a
companion to Jack Higg's Sports: A Reference Guide (Greenwood,
1982). The types of individual or team sports included in this
volume include those that are viewed as physical contests engaged
in for physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological
fulfillment. With a focus on books alone, chapters review the
available literature regarding sports and each concludes with a
bibliography. Academic journals likely to contain articles on the
topics discussed are listed at the end of each chapter. Twelve
chapters discuss sports and American history, business and law,
education, ethnicity and race, gender, literature, philosophy and
religion, popular culture, psychology, science and technology,
sociology and world history. This reference and guide to further
research will appeal to scholars of popular culture and sports. An
index and two appendixes are included, one listing important dates
in American sports from 1980 through 2000 and one listing sports
halls of fame, museums, periodicals, and websites.
This book offers a distinctive introduction to understanding the
position of sport in consumer society. Drawing on recent
developments in sociological theory and research, particularly in
relation to debates about culture and consumption, the book
examines how sport - as both recreational practice and commercial
spectacle - has become more central to the capitalist 'economies of
signs and space'. Containing up-to-date research findings and
identifying key issues in the study and politics of sport in
consumer culture, this is essential reading for all students
seeking to broaden their understanding of sport in society.
This handbook addresses the history, organization and central
debates in the field of leisure studies. More than thirty chapters
from leading international scholars are presented in five clearly
defined parts. These examine the origins of leisure studies; review
and evaluate the contributions and approaches to leisure studies of
key social science disciplines; provide a guide to core questions
in the organization of leisure that recur in the literature;
consider locations and forms of leisure; and consider the key
themes that run through debates as the subject has matured in a
central part of the social science canon. Critically summing up the
achievements of the field and providing an agenda for future debate
and research, it offers an invaluable resource for students,
scholars and lecturers.

"Attempt everything in life with your best effort, And a great
passion, and you will be happy"
From Motivational Words From Your Favorite Gym Teacher "One
kind, positive word to a person who is down, May change their life
forever" Half of the book is athletic motivation, and half
about motivation and inspiration in all aspects of
life. We all have times in our lives
when we could use a little inspiration. Some positive words
that motivate us to do things we never thought possible. To
lift us up when we're down. To give us the strength to
believe in ourselves and in others. Words that push us to
greatness. Words that make us kinder and more caring.
Words that give us the courage to forgive . Words that may
change your life forever!
This work explores the development of English sport during the
eight centuries preceding the industrial era. Focusing on outdoor
activities that involved intergroup competition among adults,
Thomas Henricks demonstrates that sport was a sophisticated and
"rational" experience, connected to society in many subtle yet
important ways. Accessible to readers in many disciplines and on
many levels, the book charts the changes in sport preceding the
modern era, serves as an introduction to the historical literature
on English sport, traces the relationship between sport and
shifting social patterns, and develops an original thesis of sport
as an identity ceremony for its participants. The work begins with
a detailed introduction to English sport and the historians, and
continues with Henrick's thesis of sporting events as identity
ceremonies. The next of five chapters trace the development of
sport and society through five periods of English history: the
feudal society of the early Middle Ages; the decay of feudalism and
the later Middle Ages; the centralized administration and
middle-class appeal of the Tudor era; the elitist nostalgia and
French influence of the Stuart era, followed by the Puritan
Revolution; and the celebration of private property and mixture of
snobbery and social mingling of Georgian England. Each chapter is
organized in a similar manner, beginning with a brief introduction
to the social life of the times, followed by presentations of
patterns within individual sports and a summary of dominant themes
in sport during that era. A concluding chapter considers some
sociological aspects of sport and society. Disputed Pleasures will
be an important resource for courses inEnglish social history,
sociology, and the history of sport, as well as a significant
addition to public and academic libraries.
All over the world sport plays a prominent role in society: as a
leisure activity for many, as an ingredient of culture, as a
business and as a matter of national prestige in such major events
as the World Cup in soccer or the Olympic Games. Hence, it is not
surprising that science has entered the realm of sports, and, in
particular, that computer simulation has become highly relevant in
recent years. This is explored in this book by choosing five
different sports as examples, demonstrating that computational
science and engineering (CSE) can make essential contributions to
research on sports topics on both the fundamental level and,
eventually, by supporting athletes performance."

The sustainability of tourism is increasingly under question given
the challenges of overtourism, COVID-19 and the contribution of
tourism to climate and environmental change. Degrowth and Tourism
provides an original response to the central problem of growth in
tourism, an imperative that has been intrinsic within tourism
practice, and directs the reader to rethink the impacts of tourism
and possible alternatives beyond the sustainable growth discourse.
Using a multi-scaled approach to investigate degrowth's macro
effects and micro indications in tourism, this book frames degrowth
in tourism in terms of business, destination and policy
initiatives. It uses a combination of empirical research, case
studies and theory to offer new perspectives and approaches to
analyse issues related to overtourism, COVID-19, small-scale
tourism operations and entrepreneurship, mobility and climate
change in tourism. Interdisciplinary chapters provide studies on
animal-based tourism, nature-based tourism, domestic tourism,
developing community-centric tourism and many other areas, within
the paradigm of degrowth. This book offers significant insight on
both the implications of degrowth paradigm in tourism studies and
practices, as well as tourism's potential contributions to the
degrowth paradigm, and will be essential reading for all those
interested in sustainable tourism and transformations through
tourism.
The Scandinavian and Nordic countries have some of the highest
participation rates in sport and physical activity in the world and
are therefore important case studies across a range of subjects,
from sport policy to physical activity and health. This is the
first book to bring together studies of all those countries in one
volume, examining sport, physical activity and exercise, and
exploring the factors behind such high levels of participation.
Rich in empirical data, the book examines trends in sports
participation, organisation and policy in each of the constituent
countries, highlighting common themes and outcomes. This is a
valuable resource for students, researchers and academics working
in the fields of sport, physical education, leisure, sport policy,
sport development, the sociology of sport, and physical activity
and health.
Despite the increasing importance and politicization of sport,
Western scholars have only recently begun to consider it as a
subject worthy of serious study and research. Martin Vinokur
contends that sport has become an increasingly pervasive and
visibly central element in Western culture and that its function as
a political tool is likely to grow still more in the 1990s, as
governments realize the full value of sports to the political
socialization process. He shows how the German Democratic Republic
and Romania in particular have used sports to help achieve their
political goals. This national emphasis on sports is then
contrasted to the Western governments' approach. Finally, Vinokur
focuses on the 1980 and 1984 Olympic boycotts and the 1988 summer
games in Seoul.
Sport and Modern Social Theorists is an innovative and exciting new
collection. The chapters are written by leading social analysts of
sport from across the world, and examine the contributions of major
social theorists towards our critical understanding of modern
sport. Social theorists under critical examination include Marx,
Weber, Durkheim, Adorno, Gramsci, Habermas, Merton, C.Wright Mills,
Goffman, Giddens, Elias, Bourdieu and Foucault. This book will
appeal to students and scholars of sport studies, cultural studies,
modern social theory, and to social scientists generally.
Making the Connection: Data-Informed Practices in Academic Support
Centers for College Athletes is practical and ideal for those who
seek to use research to inform their individual and organizational
practices. This volume is primarily intended for upper-level
undergraduate and graduate students, though scholars, researchers,
teachers, practitioners, coaches, athletics administrators, and
advocates of intercollegiate athletics will also find it useful. It
comprises a series of chapters that cover a wide range of
evidence-based approaches designed to enhance the practices of
those who work closely with college athletes. Given the breadth of
the field overall, this single volume is not exhaustive, but the
current concerns, challenges, and themes of relevance to higher
education researchers, practitioners, and others are well
addressed. The intent of the text is to spark conversation about
how college and university constituents can reframe their thinking
about the importance of innovative research to careful, informed
practice. Likewise, the contributors hope that it will inspire
greater awareness and action among practitioners, as well as
advance scholarship in the area of athletics. Each chapter includes
current research, and in some cases theoretical perspectives, which
should assist practitioners enhance the well-being of college
athletes. Each chapter also offers guided discussion questions that
are ideal for use as the basis of further conversation in the
classroom setting. Adopters of this text will benefit from leading
voices in the field who delve into complex issues, shedding new
light and presenting unique opportunities for understanding a
diversity of perspectives on evidence-based practices in support
centers for athletes. In all, this volume provides a rich portrait
of data-driven practices designed to assist practitioners and
others who work closely with college athletes, and lays the
groundwork for an ambitious and long overdue agenda to further
develop innovative research that informs the practices of athletics
stakeholders and improves the quality of experiences for college
athletes.
