Hilarious stories you'd never dream could emerge from the office of
a superintendent of school This book demonstrates that a good sense
of humor is probably more important that possessing a PhD in
dealing with the diversified spectrum of visitors who cross the
superintendent's threshold on a daily basis - all with a problem
that only he can solve You've got to deal with them all - from the
governor's office and the state superintendent of schools to the
least affluent and unemployed. How you do this, and making them all
feel "special" in the process - dictates your measure of success
and tenure in office. Also, that little bit of humor you inject
into the seemingly most serious of cases, especially to the persons
involved, may go a long way in diffusing some volatile situations
and putting them into a workable perspective which then become "
win-win" for all concerned. This book also contains many valuable
"gems" of wisdom in dealing with work related eventualities from
some of the world's wisest minds - such as Dr. Norman Vincent
Peale. Also some of America's top executives provide inspirational
themes which illustrate how they became top level CEO's
Sport is now a major industry -- and one of increasing importance
throughout both the developed and developing world -- but, until
now, it has received little serious attention from anthropologists.
In this first general book on the anthropology of sport, the
contributors look at how different sports are used by a wide
variety of peoples to express, manipulate and negotiate their
identities, and to challenge the way they are defined by others.
Chapters address:
-the role played by football teams in colonial Zimbabwe to express
locals' autonomy from their British rulers;
-the evolution of one of Venice's central festive occasions -- its
regatta -- from a ritual of state to a sport of the people; modern
and postmodern transformations of polo in Pakistan, its original
home
-the resolution of problematic aspects of social life in Turkey
through wrestling;
-the manner by which Catalan nationalists successfully exploited
the Barcelona Olympics for their own political ends; and
-the controversy between anglers and anti-anglers in Britain.
This pioneering volume will be of interest to anthropologists,
sociologists, sport historians and all those interested in this
popular subject.

This book looks at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games as a complex
nation-building project. Sports mega-events have been mostly
studied as homogenous government-led strategies, but more work is
needed around the diverse reception and performances. The
preparation period for the Olympics in Mexico and especially the
year 1968 highlight the multiplicity of voices behind these
exercises. Beyond the government and associated networks, the
citizenry also used this mega-event to present an idea of Mexico to
the world and thus reshape citizenship and nationhood. This study
takes a bottom-up approach to look at the citizenry's experiences
of the 1968 Olympic Games, both the shared nationalistic values and
the areas of conflict.

enthusiast. With 152 illustrations and detailed chapters on all

Operating behind a veil of amateurism, the NCAA and collegiate
athletic departments oversee big business sports programs. These
entities generate revenues comparable to professional sports,
practice and play in facilities that rival those found in
professional sports, and pay their top coaches salaries comparable
to the salaries paid to coaches of professional sports teams.
Athletes are courted with lavish stadiums, training facilities, and
locker rooms. Customers are wooed with branded apparel, videos,
logos, and advertisements. Business interests are captured with
stadium billboards, electronic ads on scoreboards, sponsorship of
bowl games, logos on uniforms, and exclusive apparel and equipment
contracts. Where do, or should, these lucrative athletic ventures
fit in the mission of higher education? To what extent is the
central mission of creating an environment for learning and
extending the frontiers of knowledge enhanced or limited by college
sports? Are declarations by the NCAA to promote amateurism and
competitive balance supportive of the university mission? Does the
NCAA even follow its purported objectives? The Economics of College
Sports contains both empirical and theoretical research to address
these and related issues. Perhaps the most unique contributions
focus on the interactions between legal and institutional aspects
of the NCAA and their impact on the objectives and goals of
university education; all of the contributions provide insights
that will generate significant discussion about the policies
necessary to sustain the vitality and integrity of the university
education-sports coalition.

thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of all
hunters as it contains much information that is still useful and
practical today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those
dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in

This book explores several cultural and historical paths
intertwined in the genesis and development of sport and physical
activities within colonial and postcolonial contexts. As far as
youth organizations and Western-based sports are concerned, the
Independencies political split needs to be reconsidered, from a
cultural perspective with practices overlapping spatial,
chronological and epistemological borders. When looking at the
variety of practices, the colonial legacies and the ensuing
migration journeys through a global perspective, there is a need to
understand the diverse ways of composing and building the
postcolonial sport worlds. Multiculturalism (South Africa, France,
Algeria), transnational journeys (Pacific Islands), rebuilding of
national identities through sporting institutions (Ireland, West
Africa), racialization of the society (Rwanda, South Africa),
gender control (from the West-East to the North-South gap),
sportization of traditional/old games (Americas), and so on.
Following the various studies shaping this book, the ambivalence of
sporting and physical activities' paths comes up. It is apparent
these trajectories have generated a mixed feeling of adhesion and
repulsion towards Western hegemonies in postcolonial societies.
The Female Tradition in Physical Education re-examines a key
question in the history of modern education: why did the remarkably
successful leaders of female physical education, who pioneered the
development of the subject in late nineteenth- and early
twentieth-century England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, lose
control in the years following the Second World War? Despite the
later resurgence of second wave feminism they never regained a
voice, with the result that male leadership was able to shift the
curriculum in ways that neglected the needs and interests of girls
and young women. Drawing on new sources and a range of
historiographical approaches, and touching on related fields such
as therapeutic exercise and dance, the book examines the
development of physical education for girls in a number of
countries to offer an alternative explanation to the dominant
narrative of the 'demise' of the female tradition. Providing an
important contextualization for the state of contemporary female
physical education, this is fascinating reading for anybody with an
interest in the development of sport and physical education,
women's and gender history, and physical culture more generally.

In this innovative study, Patrick Ismond provides an analysis of the issue of racism within British sport. It presents a number of theoretical positions regarding race, racism and sport, before providing a background history of the involvement of minority ethnic communities. Much detailed primary research is used to inform interesting discussions concerning racism in sport and its relationship to ethnicity, identity and notions of Englishness and Britishness. The study also includes a valuable analysis of sexism in sport, and the discrimination suffered by minority ethnic sportswomen.

The incredible, never-before-told story of Augie Donatelli-a man
fellow umpires consider a legend.
Coalmines ... Bombers ... and Baseball ...
Emmy Award-winning sportswriter/producer John Bacchia shares the
incredible, never-before-told story of Augie Donatelli-one of Major
League Baseball's unsung men in blue. A coal miner from Bakerton,
Pennsylvania, Donatelli served his country as a tail gunner aboard
a B-17 and found his life's calling in the bleak con nes of a Nazi
prison camp.
When Army Air Corps Sta Sergeant Donatelli umpired softball
games to boost morale for his fellow airmen at Stalag Luft VI,
little did he know he was taking edgling steps towards becoming one
of the most respected umpires in baseball history. However, prior
to the end of the war, he would be subjected to a brutal "black
march" across war-torn Europe before orchestrating a daring
escape.
Less than a decade after serving his country, Donatelli found
himself at the pinnacle of his profession-umpiring in the 1955
World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees.
Hardened by his war experiences and his years of working in the
coal mines, Donatelli hustled on the baseball diamond as if his
life depended on it. He gave his heart and soul to the game he
loved. Yet despite nding his dream occupation, Donatelli
voluntarily put his career and livelihood in jeopardy, as he and
his fellow umpires, Shag Crawford, Jocko Conlan, Al Barlick, and
others, spearheaded the formation of the rst umpires' union, the
Major League Umpires Association.

This title offers an examination of African Americans in sports,
from a variety of perspectives and through a lively range of
rhetoric styles, and illuminates the history of highly successful
and influential individuals, athletes and teams who have
transcended "mere" celebrity to come to represent a given Zeitgeist
to a sizable part of the world. It also explores the history and
lives of complex, multi-layered personages and groups. Finally, it
examines the extent to which modern mass media and popular culture
have contributed greatly to the rise, and sometimes fall, of the
these powerful symbols of athletic, individual, and group
excellence. Icons of African American Sports includes articles on:
- The Williams Sisters - Shaquille O'Neal - Jim Brown - Harlem
Globetrotters - Jack Johnson - Carl Lewis - Jesse Owens - Joe Louis
- Magic Johnson - Wilma Rudolph - Muhammad Ali - Barry Bonds -
Dominique Dawes - Negro Baseball Leagues - Arthur Ashe - George
Foreman - and others. Icons of African American Sports is a
worthwhile study and a desperately needed contribution to the
fields of African American history, United States history and
sports history.
