Not long ago, most blind and visually impaired people grew up without ever playing sports; they sat on the sidelines, and kept score during gym-protected rather than included. In the 1980s, few people had ever heard of the Paralympic Games or accessible recreation. Today, promising blind athletes can receive residency at the US Olympic Training Center; runners compete for prize money and national championships, and most ski resorts offer adaptive programs throughout the year where blind people can ski, cycle, and kayak-often for free. The Paralympic movement, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and ever-increasing expectation for inclusion among the disabled have inspired an explosion of accessible sports, fitness, and recreation programs that accommodate the blind. The Encyclopedia of Sports & Recreation for People with Visual Impairments is the first consumer- focused, action-oriented guide to this new world of accessible activity, profiling the people, programs, and products that are helping move blind and visually impaired people from the sidelines into the game. This groundbreaking guide profiles every accessible blind sport and recreation activity with entries that outline how athletes (both novice and elite) got involved in the sport and how participation has shaped their life. The book also profiles major blind sports organizations and includes chapter and resource listings on camps and accessible recreation providers. Through this book, blind people will be inspired to embrace sports as the rest of society does-as a vital component of personal expression and human interaction that opens paths to adventure, confidence, and lifelong health and fitness.

The games are again divided into three basic forms of foot ball; but now are listed under the actual style names used at the times played. They are the Kicking Game/Association Football (now soccer), Carrying Game/Boston Rules Game/American Rugby Game/ English Rugby Union (now rugby) and the Ball-Control Game/American Collegiate Game/American Rugby Football (now football).Within these basic forms, the games are listed under colleges, independent clubs and high schools. There is a chapter on leagues/conferences and the appendices contain team histories with the types of foot ball played.
"Players today are selfish and hard to coach." "It's hard to get good team chemistry these days." "I wish I could just coach and not deal with all the hassles with parents, administrators, and players." Have you muttered such complaints to yourself or even spoken them aloud? If so, Know Yourself as a Coach can help. In Know Yourself as a Coach you will learn how to evaluate yourself as a person to determine what defines you and what motivates you-and how best to put that newfound insight to use; assess your coaching style, analyze where your strengths and weaknesses lie, and decide how to use this knowledge to enhance your skills; hone your people skills and put them to work for you; and develop the mental side of coaching. Whether you are an up-and-coming coach or a longtime veteran, Know Yourself as a Coach will give you new insights into yourself, your players, and your approach to coaching.
First published in 1859, "Forty-Four Years of the Life of a Hunte"r records life in early America, hunting in the wilderness, and descriptions of game and plants of the time. Part backwoods history, part heroic adventure story, the book recounts Meshach Browning's hunts for white-tailed deer through the Appalachian wilderness of Maryland and West Virginia.
Head basketball coach of Notre Dame at age 29, a position he held
for more than two decades with a 100 percent graduation rate, an
attention-getting figure in President George H. W. Bush's anti-drug
program, part-time ambassador, a nationally adored ESPN
commentator, and a possible Presidential candidate, Richard
"Digger" Phelps has done it all. Undertaker's Son is an eminently
readable, inspirational, account of how he rose from an unmotivated
student in small-town Beacon, New York, to a nationally known
figure who attracts attention wherever he goes. One lesson: Do it
today, for tomorrow might not come--a hard lesson he learned while
apprenticing at his father's funeral home. In Undertaker's Son, the
irrepressible Phelps gives advice that really matters, whether it's
how to get getting ahead in business, make the right decision, or
plan for the future. Here also is Phelps's plan for a better
America in these contentious times. Brutally honest, inspirational
and often humorous, Phelps's message will appeal to anyone seeking
an edge in business or life.
Baseballs, Basketballs and Matzah Balls offers a sweeping exploration of sports: of contests and heroes, of triumph and adversity, and how they relate to the festivals that Jews have celebrated for thousands of years. Among the chapters: Remembering Simpler Times: What central message of Sukkot is enthusiastically espoused by winning college coaches? Kindling the Light of Confidence: What Hanukkah teaches us about the kind of confidence that builds champions? A Purim Perspective on Competitive Anger: Why so many athletes lose their cool, just like the villainous Haman did, becoming their own worst enemies? Coach K and the Meaning of Passover: How Mike Krzyzewski's success explains the Exodus? "A compelling, entertaining, illuminating work that will stir the hearts and intellect of Jews and non-Jews alike." - Seth Davis, Sports Illustrated/CBS Sports "Rabbi Mitch Smith has written a book that gives all sports fans occasion to think about the meaning of sacrifice, teamwork, leadership and other virtues in a different light. - Bud Selig, Commissioner, Major League Baseball "This book is a great read It offers all of us a roadmap to becoming more fulfilled human beings - Lenny Krayzelburg, 4-time Olympic Gold Medalist "Informative, insightful, inspirational... Mitch Smith scores on every level with this tonic for the soul." - Tim Green, former defensive end, Atlanta Falcons, Fox Sports NFL analyst "A MUST-READ Mitch Smith brings age-old texts to life, and conveys how concepts like team work, resilience, and refusing to succumb to defeat -- mainstays in sports -- not only allowed the Jewish people to weather history's storms, but to constantly engage in self-renewal. To paraphrase the old Levy's Rye Bread ad, you don't have to be Jewish to love this book." - Dr. Richard Lapchick, Director, Institute for Diversityand Ethics in Sport
Utilizing a practical, high-yield presentation, this textbook is a comprehensive review of the most common shoulder and elbow diagnoses and management strategies. It allows easy access to pertinent information for residents and fellows while preparing for rounds, the clinic and the operating room and also aides residents studying for their yearly in-training exam (OITE). Each topic is organized in a consistent, bulleted format so that the information flows in a logic manner: history, physical examination, imaging (when and what to order), and the most appropriate treatment algorithm. The most common classification systems are emphasized and illustrated, and treatment algorithms are further organized into non-operative and operative and include surgical approaches as well as the risks and complications of surgical intervention. The shoulder and elbow are covered in their own exclusive sections, with each chapter discussing the unique diagnostic considerations for each anatomic structure and the types of injuries to expect. Topics in the shoulder section include osteoarthritis, rotator cuff arthropathy and tears, instability, stiffness, SLAP tears and biceps tendinitis, and fractures of the clavicle and scapula. Topics in the elbow section include biceps and triceps rupture, lateral and medical epicondylitis, instability and stiffness, and elbow fractures - distal humerus, Monteggia, the terrible triad and more. Case material, key points and takeaways, and question-and-answer elements are included to enhance the text's overall utility. There is currently no textbook on the shoulder and elbow tailored specifically for orthopedic residents, fellows and senior medical students. The Resident's Guide to Shoulder and Elbow Surgery therefore provides a much-needed resource for early-career clinicians and surgeons.

Contemporary life in the United States would be difficult to understand withouth examining the pivotal role sports have played in it. "Controversies of the Sports World" is designed to take readers of all ages into the heart of the tensions and conflicts that arise from the wide-ranging enterprise that now dominates the lives of millions of people. The controversies explored include such issues in sports as recruitment procedures, steroid and other drug use, discrimination against women, discrimination against African Americans, and violence. Each of sixteen chapters analyzes the background and current status of a specific controversy illuminating how the games we play and watch affect, and are affected by, the world beyond the playing fields. Putnam presents opposing arguments on the sources and nature of each controversy, providing readers with an understanding of the causes and effects of sports controversies. He also presents a picture of how the people who inhabit the sports world--athletes, coaches, parents, agents, fans, team owners, corporate sponsors, and public officials--pursue their often clashing agendas in a manner that makes conflict inevitable and ongoing. References and Resources sections at the end of each chapter provide readers with annotated cites that will lead them to the sources they need to further explore particular aspects of each topic. The detailed index includes names, places, and teams, as well as concepts which students, teachers, and interested readers can use and explore.
