Rediscovery of Cultural Landscapes in Southern China - Sustainable Heritage and Planning in Rural Settlements (Hardcover):... Rediscovery of Cultural Landscapes in Southern China - Sustainable Heritage and Planning in Rural Settlements (Hardcover)
Wallace P.H. Chang
R4,198 Discovery Miles 41 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the concept of human landscape in rural settlements in Southern China, where communities and their cultural landscapes are facing contemporary challenges following a period of rapid urbanization in the last 50 years. While metropolitan cities, such as Hong Kong, are experiencing accelerated urban development, underpopulated rural villages are struggling to maintain the cultural heritage of their regions. Rediscovery of Cultural Landscapes in Southern China provides a detailed account into indigenous living cultures in traditional, rural settlements upon natural landscapes. Beginning with an overview of the theoretical framework, the book presents six unique cases, including: Tai O, Yim Tin Tsai, Lai Chi Wo, Nga Tsin Wai, Cangdong, and Meinong, while illustrating a relevant comparison between Hakka and Satoyama landscape systems. The spectrum of theoretical and case analyses allows for a rethinking of the evolving cultural landscape’s positioning with valuable heritages in the context of a post-industrial society. The book is written towards reinterpreting the cultural landscape by conceptualizing the human landscape for scholars, practitioners, and students interested in rural-cultural conservation and revitalization, heritage management, traditional architecture and landscape planning, and urban-rural development.

• Combines material culture, environmental history and history of science for the first time to look at living things rather than non-living and human-made things/objects enabling students and museum professionals alike to see the importance of including living things within the history of material culture and the early modern world to understand the full scope. • Provides a deeper understand of global exchange and the history of commodities/collecting for early modern students and museum professionals to understand the development of trade in the early modern period and the creation of a system of trade based on moving things from their geography of origin to another area that valued them more highly. • Enables students and scientist to see the theoretical and empirical interventions with the living objects which reveal connected histories that link Europe to other regions of the globe, by way of naturalists, natural philosophers, collectors, merchants, apothecaries, physicians, agriculturalists, and professional scientists, to inform their own studies and research.

Material Culture in Transit - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Zainabu Jallo Material Culture in Transit - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Zainabu Jallo
R3,931 Discovery Miles 39 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Material Culture in Transit: Theory and Practice constellates curators and scholars actively working with material culture within academic and museal institutions through theory and practice. The rich collection of essays critically addresses the multivalent ways in which mobility reshapes the characteristics of artefacts, specifically under prevailing issues of representation and colonial liabilities. The volume attests to material culture as central to understanding the repercussions of problematic histories and proposes novel ways to address them. It offers valuable reading for scholars of anthropology, museum studies, history and others with an interest in material culture.

Memory Fragmentation from Below and Beyond the State - Uses of the Past in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings (Hardcover):... Memory Fragmentation from Below and Beyond the State - Uses of the Past in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings (Hardcover)
Anne Bazin, Emmanuelle Hébert, Valérie Rosoux, Eric Sangar
R4,204 Discovery Miles 42 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume suggests a model of collective memory that distinguishes between two conceptual logics of memory fragmentation: vertical fragmentation and horizontal fragmentation. It offers a series of case studies of conflict and post-conflict collective memory, shedding light on the ways various actors participate in the production, dissemination, and contestation of memory discourses. With attention to the characteristics of both vertical and horizontal memory fragmentation, the book addresses the plurality of diverging, and often conflicting, memory discourses that are produced within the public sphere of a given community. It analyzes the juxtaposition, tensions, and interactions between narratives produced beyond or below the central state, often transcending national boundaries. The book is structured according to the type of actors involved in a memory fragmentation process. It explores how states have been trying to produce and impose memory discourses on civil societies, sometimes even against the experiences of their own citizens, and how such efforts as well as backlash from actors below and beyond the state have led to horizontal and vertical memory fragmentation. Furthermore, it considers the attempts by states’ representatives to reassert control of national memory discourses and the subsequent resistances they face. As such, this volume will appeal to sociology and political science scholars interested in memory studies in post-conflict societies.

The Romance of Crossing Borders - Studying and Volunteering Abroad (Paperback): Neriko Musha Doerr, Hannah Davis Taieb The Romance of Crossing Borders - Studying and Volunteering Abroad (Paperback)
Neriko Musha Doerr, Hannah Davis Taieb
R844 Discovery Miles 8 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What draws people to study abroad or volunteer in far-off communities? Often the answer is romance - the romance of landscapes, people, languages, the very sense of border-crossing - and longing for liberation, attraction to the unknown, yearning to make a difference. This volume explores the complicated and often fraught desires to study and volunteer abroad. In doing so, the book sheds light on how affect is managed by educators and mobilized by students and volunteers themselves, and how these structures of feeling relate to broader social and economic forces.
