Although for many visitors the Kalahari evokes images of winter
game drives in a vast desert of thirsty red sands, it is the
capricious summer landscape that has been luring painter and
photographer Robert Grogan back to this region for more than 30
years. Together with his wife Lee, he has braved unpredictable,
sometimes violent storms, impassable roads, fierce heat and
humidity, insects and tall grass for the chance to paint the summer
cloud banks and startling local transformations rendered by the
rains. He has photographed, too, not just the iconic game, big cats
and raptors, but also more transient delights of the season, like
the butterflies, meadows of wildflowers and the springbok lambing
season. Gathered together for the first time in a vibrant
collection, his landscape paintings and magnificent wildlife
photographs bring the Kalaharis lush and beautiful summer season
vividly to life.

Provence today is a state of mind as much as a region of France,
promising clear skies and bright sun, gentle breezes scented with
lavender and wild herbs, scenery alternately bold and intricate,
and delicious foods served alongside heady wines. Yet in the
mid-twentieth century, a travel guide called the region a "mostly
dry, scrubby, rocky, arid land." How, then, did Provence become a
land of desire--an alluring landscape for the American holiday? In
A Taste for Provence, historian Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz digs into
this question and spins a wonderfully appealing tale of how
Provence became Provence. The region had previously been regarded
as a backwater and known only for its Roman ruins, but in the
postwar era authors, chefs, food writers, visual artists, purveyors
of goods, and travel magazines crafted a new, alluring image for
Provence. Soon, the travel industry learned that there were many
ways to roam--and some even involved sitting still. The promise of
longer stays where one cooked fresh food from storied outdoor
markets became desirable as American travelers sought new tastes
and unadulterated ingredients. Even as she revels in its
atmospheric, cultural, and culinary attractions, Horowitz
demystifies Provence and the perpetuation of its image today.
Guiding readers through books, magazines, and cookbooks, she takes
us on a tour of Provence pitched as a new Eden, and she dives into
the records of a wide range of visual media--paintings,
photographs, television, and film--demonstrating what fueled
American enthusiasm for the region. Beginning in the 1970s,
Provence--for a summer, a month, or even just a week or two--became
a dream for many Americans. Even today as a road well traveled,
Provence continues to enchant travelers, armchair and actual alike.
Seeing a total solar eclipse ('totality' - when the sun is fully
obscured by the moon) is a bucket-list event, generating a sense of
wonder and even an 'end-of-the-world' sensation. New from Bradt,
Solar Eclipses 2024-2027 is the only guide to cover the world's
next three total solar eclipses, arguably Nature's most incredible
spectacle. Written by an eclipse expert, this guide offers
potential eclipse-tourists and eclipse-chasers alike everything
they need to understand, prepare for and travel to each eclipse.
Each eclipse will be remarkable in its own right. The 2024 totality
will be visible in 15 US states, six Canadian provinces and parts
of Mexico. The events offer US residents a second bite at the
cherry, after many people regretted not travelling a short distance
into the 2017 eclipse zone. The 2026 event is Europe's first
totality since 1999 and will be visible in Greenland, Iceland and
Spain. The 2027 eclipse (visible from Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco,
Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia) will
be the longest until 2168. Chapters explain the climatology of each
eclipse track, chart the sky during totality, and advise precisely
where and when to see it - with detailed information on duration,
altitude and timings for various locations. Such travel advice is
critical, because the best eclipse-viewing locations tend to be in
relatively remote places that either require careful planning or
advance booking on specialist tours, which have limited capacity. A
complementary chapter helps the beginner understand eclipse
science, the types of solar eclipse and great historical eclipses.
Another details other minor eclipses during 2024-2027 plus the
annular eclipses due in 2023 and 2028, when the moon obscures all
but the outer ring of the sun. Another chapter provides advice on
how to prepare for and photograph solar eclipses. Throw in a
schedule of eclipses through to 2050, and listings for tour
operators specialising in eclipse tourism and the result is the
most detailed eclipse guide around - perfect for everyone from
beginners to experts via anyone who wants an excuse to travel
somewhere different.
This is an important document in the history of Japanese-American
relations. In 2002, President Bush spoke of the great Japanese
scholar and statesman Inazo Nitobe, who envisioned a future of
friendship between the two nations. This book is one of the means
by which Nitobe sought to bridge the Pacific. Writing before World
War I, he presents a detailed account of Japan and the Japanese in
terms easily understandable to western readers, emphasising points
of similarity rather than difference, often citing the work of
western historians and philosophers in order to explain Japanese
practices, always searching for common aims and goals. He deals
with the effect of the past on the present, national
characteristics, religious beliefs, morals and moral ideals,
education, economic conditions, Japan as coloniser, relations
between the United States and Japan, and AmericaaEURO (TM)s
influence in the Far East, concluding with the hope that wherever
else war may break out, lasting peace would reign over the Pacific.
In this he was disappointed, but the fact that Nitobe is cited
today as the architect of Japanese-American friendship makes this
volume essential reading for the historian.

Witches and Warlocks of New York is a collection of legends and
historical accounts about witches and warlocks from the Empire
State. This will be the second in a series (the first being
Massachusetts publishing September 1, 2021). New York has a
surprisingly rich history of witches and witchcraft. These stories
are known locally in the towns where they occurred but have never
been collected into one book before. Included are a history and
origins of witchcraft in New York State and historical tales of
"witches" across the state including Hulda and the thirteen Witches
of the Catskills.
This volume suggests a model of collective memory that
distinguishes between two conceptual logics of memory
fragmentation: vertical fragmentation and horizontal fragmentation.
It offers a series of case studies of conflict and post-conflict
collective memory, shedding light on the ways various actors
participate in the production, dissemination, and contestation of
memory discourses. With attention to the characteristics of both
vertical and horizontal memory fragmentation, the book addresses
the plurality of diverging, and often conflicting, memory
discourses that are produced within the public sphere of a given
community. It analyzes the juxtaposition, tensions, and
interactions between narratives produced beyond or below the
central state, often transcending national boundaries. The book is
structured according to the type of actors involved in a memory
fragmentation process. It explores how states have been trying to
produce and impose memory discourses on civil societies, sometimes
even against the experiences of their own citizens, and how such
efforts as well as backlash from actors below and beyond the state
have led to horizontal and vertical memory fragmentation.
Furthermore, it considers the attempts by states’ representatives
to reassert control of national memory discourses and the
subsequent resistances they face. As such, this volume will appeal
to sociology and political science scholars interested in memory
studies in post-conflict societies.

'Backpacking With A Bunion' is a travelogue of discovery and
adventure across the countries of S E Asia. The journey begins in
Bangkok - where else; and ends up on the island of Flores in
Indonesia. My story as a mature 'gapper' is outlined in the
Introduction, as well as some of the highlights from my trip. The
reader if so inclined could follow my journey on a map - it works
quite well as a jigsaw, though I have certainly left plenty of room
for flexibility and spontaneity. Travel, like life is not always
straightforward, but that's the joy in it. Each chapter is given a
descriptive heading to provide a unique flavour to the areas
visited. They are roughly in chronological order to give a sense of
continuity to my travelling over a period of eighteen months, but
could stand alone as set pieces. I have tried to make the book as
varied as possible with various quotations, travellers' tales and
humour and more serious religious, cultural, political and
environmental observations. I have included some facts and figures
(where appropriate) on history, geography, transport arrangements,
places of interest and personal experiences, thus painting a
picture in words of sights, sounds and happenings. The book
concludes with S E Asia in a nutshell, a summary of what the
traveller might expect and emphasising that travelling changes the
traveller. And hopefully reading this book will change the reader's
perspective too.
