Neolocalism and Tourism - Understanding a Global Movement (Hardcover): Linda Ingram, Susan Slocum, Christina Cavaliere Neolocalism and Tourism - Understanding a Global Movement (Hardcover)
Linda Ingram, Susan Slocum, Christina Cavaliere
R3,328 Discovery Miles 33 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Neolocalism and Tourism: Understanding a Global Movement is the first comprehensive analysis of neolocalism in the tourism context and provides a forum to discuss the latest developments, trends, and research involving tourism and neolocalism, as well as exploring new areas for consideration. Synergies between neolocalism and tourism can contribute to a greater understanding of the complexities of sustainability through increases in community involvement, which enhances local pride and local sourcing. The role of local production, distribution, and consumption can link people to landscapes and contribute to a deeper understanding of sense of place, which in turns garners support for local enterprises and local causes. This edited collection: * Outlines the theory of neolocalism and features neolocalism in relation to tourism; * Brings a new level of scrutiny to the stand-alone concept of "neolocal" as a rising phenomenon in sustainable tourism development and tourism product development studies; * Highlights the versatility and innovating applications of neolocalism within the wider tourism debate; and * Contains international contributions and examples (both applied and conceptual) from global experts.

Lighthouses may stand watchfully over serene waters one day and be bombarded by immense waves the next. They may look out on the most spectacular views, mark the entrance to a busy harbour or be placed in some of the world's most desolate locations. To seafarers they are guiding lights in dangerous waters, but, once decommissioned, they can acquire an air of mystery. They are the most strictly functional of all civilian buildings and yet they can be surprisingly beautiful and varied in design. Are they square, cylindrical or octagonal? Are they single structures or towers on top of other buildings? Are they made of wood, stone, brick, or concrete? Are they coloured with stripes or bands? From Lake Michigan to the Arctic Circle, from the British Isles to Brazil, Lighthouses celebrates more than 200 structures and the stunning vistas that surround them. Taking examples from all around the world, the book features an immense array of operating and disused lighthouses from the 18th century to the present day, from those marking ocean coastlines to structures besides lakes and on rivers, from lighthouses cloaked in ice to Art Deco classics to tilting structures abandoned in sand dunes. Presented in a handy pocket-sized format, Lighthouses is arranged geographically, with more than 200 colour photographs and captions explaining the construction, operation and history of each entry.

The Mystery of the Tuscan Hills - A Travel Guide in Search of the Ancient Etruscans (Hardcover): Morris M. Weiss M. D. The Mystery of the Tuscan Hills - A Travel Guide in Search of the Ancient Etruscans (Hardcover)
Morris M. Weiss M. D.
R729 Discovery Miles 7 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Mystery of the Tuscan Hills is a personal travel account on how to find the ancient Etruscan civilization in contemporary Italy. The author is a practicing cardiologist who, at age 40, began working at classical dig sites around the Mediterranean Sea, toiling in the summer sun as a "grunt"-coupling that with study trips over the past 25 years. The sites discussed and visited include all phases of Etruscan history and culture, from the 9th Century BC until the 3rd Century BC, when Roman might destroyed and absorbed the society. However, enough remains to provide a lifetime of study and travel opportunities. This monograph encompasses a series of portraits, or snapshots, of the Etruscans-as the author perceives them. It is not an encyclopedia of Etruscan sites and cultural history, nor a detailed travel book of Tuscany. This book will be surrounded on a bookshelf filled with elaborate coffee-table tomes of the flowers, birds, villas and museums in Tuscany, and traditional travel guides-most repeating the same information. The Mystery of the Tuscan Hills reveals a Tuscany that most travelers drive through or around, and view from a distance, but rarely "see." Learning to understand the Etruscans will also allow the traveler to get his hands around this exquisite space-one of Earth's Edens. This book is an attempt to better understand the Etruscan mind. Just as a great painter exposes the inner-self of the subject on the canvas, the successful biographer must explore the psyche of his subject, and not simply present a dry, scientific history of dates, battles and plagues. This monograph, as it rambles through Etruria (Tuscany), will paint a portrait of the Etruscans as we understandthem in the 21st Century-not a simple task, since their written language has defied translation.

*** 'This astonishing book describes a cruel, feral existence and is worthy of standing on the shelf next to George Orwell's Down And Out In Paris And London (1933) as another classic about human exploitation.' - Daily Mail 'Chisholm's story is immersive and often thrilling ... He's a fine writer.' - WSJ 'Kitchen Confidential for Generation Z' - Fortune 'An English waiters riveting account of working in Paris' - Daily Mail 'Visceral and unbelievably compelling' - Emerald Fennell 'Vividly written and merciless in its detail' - Edward Stourton 'An excellent book' - Strong Words magazine 'A Dickensian tale of a young man's trial by fire in a French bistro gives rise to biting commentary on Parisian culture in Chisholm's intoxicating debut' - Publisher's Weekly 'Ah, Paris... gastronomie magnifique and... insane shit going on behind the scenes. A Waiter in Paris charts Edward Chisholm's jaw-dropping experiences while serving tables in the French capital, a demi-monde of sadistic managers, thieves, fighting for tips and drug dealers. Seems like not much has changedsince George Orwell worked the same beat.' - Evening Standard A waiter's job is to deceive you. They want you to believe in a luxurious calm because on the other side of that door... is hell. Edward Chisholm's spellbinding memoir of his time as a Parisian waiter takes you below the surface of one of the most iconic cities in the world and right into its glorious underbelly. The waiter inhabits a world of inhuman hours, snatched sleep and dive bars; scraping by on coffee, bread and cigarettes, often under sadistic managers, with a wage so low you're fighting your colleagues for tips. It's physically demanding, frequently humiliating and incredibly competitive. And with a cast of thieves, narcissists, ex-Legionnaires, paperless immigrants and drug dealers, it makes for a compelling and eye-opening read.

And they continue to inspire writers and artists - think of Mark Twain's Mississippi and John Steinbeck's Salinas. From the Ganges rising in the Himalayas to the Nile Delta, from the Amazon rainforest to the Bow River flowing out of the Rocky Mountains, from the Rhine to the Rhone, Yangtze to the Mekong, Danube to the Volga to the Ebro, Rivers explores the grandest and most interesting rivers around the world. Arranged by continent, the book reveals the fascinating stories of how rivers have supported and shaped civilisations, the significance that rivers have gained in religion and myth, the battles that have been fought over them, the borders that they have marked, and how rivers have altered their courses, thus changing lives and livelihoods. Illustrated with more than 200 spectacular colour photographs supported by expert captions, Rivers is a fascinating journey from the mountains to the sea.

Lynne Tinley
R751 Discovery Miles 7 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lynne Tinley and her husband Ken, who is one of the leading ecologists in Africa, have devoted many years to a race against time. On the Etosha Pan, in the isolated and spectacular wildernesses of Namibia, and later on the other side of the continent at Gorongosa in Moambique, they set out to gather information which was urgently needed if the natural ecological balances of these and other African parks and reserves were to be preserved. Living in the wilderness they discovered a wealth of wonders. Sketching this far-off world of risk and hardship in words and pictures Lynne conveys images of great beauty, controversial biology, anthropology and veld humour. Moreover she provides a vivid and entertaining account of how to raise a boy and girl in the bush. Together the family survives terrorist raids, charging hippo, elephant and lion, rabid dog bites, baboon spiders, gaboon vipers, acid-shooting beetles, alcoholic snails, dangling camel membranes, and the Fat Mouse. They eat elephant trunk Portuguese-style and termites cooked by bushmen. From Otjovasandu-"The place where the elephants come through"-to the wind-swept desert pan at Okaukuejo, to the Cheringoma Plateau, through burning midday mirage and freezing lion-roaring, baboon-sobbing nights, with great sensitivity and fatalism, and an eye for the peculiarities of those who live to survive in the outer reaches, Lynne Tinley records an incredible, fast-moving period of human and animal history. Peter Beard Long Island, New York (written at the Nahoon River Mouth, South Africa in 1979)

Happy Travels with a 'Dodgy' Heart (Hardcover): David Cross Happy Travels with a 'Dodgy' Heart (Hardcover)
David Cross
R797 Discovery Miles 7 970 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is not a guidebook, though I hope it gives the reader some ideas on places worth seeing, accommodation worth considering, and decent restaurants worth dining in. It does not normally give a list of possible places to stay (only places I have experienced myself being included), but at the end of each chapter, there will be a "Practicalities" page containing the following: 1 Useful websites on places, maps, and transport. In general, sites relevant to more than one chapter will be found the first time they are relevant and are referenced in later chapters. 2 Accommodation on these pages will be only where I have stayed. I go for cheaper places when I travel alone, although I nearly always choose en-suite rooms as I got older, and moderately cheap when I went with Pam. In general, absence of comment means it is OK, bearing this in mind. 3 Restaurants are only mentioned on these pages if they are particularly good, either absolutely or in terms of value for money-or if definitely not recommended. 4 Must-sees appear in the chapters themselves but will be summarised on these pages. The index is based on my historic fury at finding pages, only to get a totally uninformative mention of the place in passing. Text (normal print) references are meant to show the first or only page with information about the place. Those planning holidays may find it more helpful to go immediately to pages shown in italic print, where they will often find helpful URLs. I have checked all the multitude of URLs in this book in February 2012, inserting a lot of new ones in place of dead sites. Occasionally my comments on a site may be a bit dodgy now, but there are some great sites here. I'm not sure how I overcame temptation to spend ages just looking at some
