Bikepacking Scotland by Markus Stitz features 20 great multi-day
off-the-beaten-track cycling adventures across the Scottish
mainland and islands. The book features routes of different lengths
which take in the best of the country, from the Ayrshire Alps,
Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders in southern Scotland, through
Perthshire’s unique drovers’ roads and the grand architecture
of the Central Belt, across to Argyll’s islands on ferry-hopping
adventures around Islay, a paradise for whisky connoisseurs, and
Jura and Mull to spot magnificent golden eagles. And, of course,
the Scottish Highlands with an epic tour of the Cairngorms National
Park, home to 25 per cent of Britain's rare and endangered species,
as well as the author’s own take on the North Coast 500 and more.
Researched and written by the founder of Bikepacking Scotland, and
mostly accessible by public transport, each route includes all the
information you need to help you plan your ride, with points of
interest along the route, food recommendations and accommodation
options, in addition to stunning photography and overview mapping.
Downloadable GPX files of the routes are also available. Alongside
further information on access, seasons and what to pack, and
valuable insight from Scottish cycling personalities including Mark
Beaumont and Jenny Graham, this book is full of practical tips and
advice for both experienced bikepackers and those who want to try
it out for the first time.
Sail just a couple of miles away from the coast and the shoreline
begins to drop below the horizon. Soon you are alone on the same
wild seas the Vikings crossed, where Drake repulsed the Spanish
Armada, and where the clippers once raced home with cargoes of tea.
The modern world may have changed radically, but the sea remains as
feral and free as it always was. There are opportunities for
adventure all around us, if we wish to take advantage of them.
Dinghy cruising is accessible, affordable adventure, available to
anyone. It requires little other than self-reliance and
self-confidence, as well as a respect for the subtleties of the
local climate and topography. Out at sea in a small boat, nature is
not something to be observed disinterestedly: it batters and
drenches you, refreshes and enlivens you. In Sailing the Shallows
Roger Barnes combines lyrical writing and beautifully drawn
illustrations with simple and practical wisdom on sailing a small
boat – a combination that has been much admired in his first
book, The Dinghy Cruising Companion. Where the first book got
readers set up and ready to go, Sailing the Shallows sees us
underway and exploring. Roger describes a series of sea passages in
small boats in UK, French and Italian waters, with each chapter
highlighting a particular technique of coastal sailing or
wilderness camping. Roger weaves practical instruction seamlessly
into the narrative, and accompanies his tales with a series of
exquisite hand-drawn illustrations of the places visited, events
described or details of his beloved boat Avel Dro. This book is a
manifesto for a different attitude to sailing; an antidote to the
complexity and ostentation of contemporary yachting. It is also
arguing for a different attitude to living – plain, direct and at
one with nature – a reassessment of our priorities that is long
overdue.
'I love her beautiful settings and brooding heroes!' Sarah Bennett
Who can resist the romance of Venice... When Norah arrives in
Venice for a ten-week internship she is surprised to discover that
her guide for her work trips around the lagoon is the undeniably
gorgeous and kind Gianluca. She can't help thinking he might be too
good to be true, with his endless fascinating local stories, and
his infectious laugh. Norah is still bitter after an accident left
her with a serious injury and also meant the end of her long-term
relationship. And besides, she's serious about her career and that
means leaving Venice at the end of the summer. Gianluca has had a
summer fling before that led to heartache for him and he won't do
it again. He enjoys the long hours out on the lagoon with Norah,
but after a storm strands them on a picture-perfect island for a
night, they agree they should just be good friends for the summer.
But life doesn't always go to plan, and when it's time for Norah to
go, they have to decide whether what they have between them is
really just a friendship, and not something more... Leonie Mack is
back with another fabulously romantic escape, perfect for all fans
of Mandy Baggot, Jo Thomas and Carole Matthews. What readers are
saying about Leonie Mack: 'I read a lot of romance books and I have
to say this book is one of the best in terms of chemistry. Readers
- we're talking red hot!' 'A hot and sizzling read!' 'An uplifting,
intelligent novel with a lot of substance and of course, plenty of
romance' 'I can't stop thinking about this book!' 'Beautifully
written, this is a great take on the opposites attract theme.' 'A
delight to read with lots of fun, romance and funny bits along the
way.'

David Fathers presents a unique and richly illustrated guide to the
London section of the Thames Path, newly updated to reflect the
city's ever-changing landscape. The iconic path, which stretches
from the lost floodplains of Richmond all the way  to the
Thames Barrier, is a panoramic 40-mile walk through 2000
years of London's history. From the old docks and wharves that
primed the Industrial Revolution, through the heart of British
Government, Monarchy and Church to the City of London that took its
very existence from the river. From the site of the Putney Debates
at St Mary's Church to Wren's mighty baroque cathedral of St
Paul's. From the great Victorian engineering works of Sir Joseph
Bazalgette and his attempts to clean up a polluted London and the
river to the Thames Barrier seeking to protect huge parts of London
from rising sea levels. From London Bridge, site of the oldest
crossing point, to the Millennium Bridge, the Thames' newest
crossing. This book explains the panorama we see today, what
came before and how the changes came about. Each double page shows
the distance covered so you can plan your own tour of the river.
The Outback is not a place with any definite boundary. When
Australians refer to the Outback they mean the enormous regions of
the country that are far away from the sorts of services transport
and facilities that people expect to find in urban areas. Find out
who lives in the Outback how they survive and why they choose to
live in one of the harshest but most beautiful places on Earth. -
One of the largest wilderness regions left in the world - Cattle

Brother and sister Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn enjoyed a rare bond:
they were intimate companions and theirs was one of the most
significant musical relationships of the 19th century. They shared
and commented on each other's compositions, each highly
appreciative of the other but also offering frank, critical advice.
Their travels produced some great music - Felix's best loved works,
the Hebrides Overture and the Scottish Symphony, were inspired by
his 1829 visit to Scotland, whilst Fanny's innovative piano cycle
Das Jahr was a musical response to the tour of Italy she made in
1839-40. Combining letters and sketches with an accompanying
narrative describing their journeys, this is a wonderful
celebration of the two Mendelssohns and a portrait of Scotland and
Italy of the time as seen through the eyes of two of the Romantic
movement's most acclaimed composers.
