Jo Bartlett
R625 Discovery Miles 6 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Another wonderful new series from the top 10 bestselling author of The Cornish Midwife, Jo Bartlett. Welcome to Seabreeze Farm.Unhappy with life in London, and with her love life a complete disaster, Ellie Chapman desperately needs a change. So when she learns she's inherited a farmhouse perched high up on the cliffs above the English Channel, it feels like the perfect escape. But ramshackle and dilapidated, and ruled by the world's naughtiest donkey, Seabreeze Farm is not as picture perfect as Ellie imagined. And then there's brooding local vet Ben Hastings, who seems to make it his mission to make life on the farm even harder for Ellie! With money tight, Ellie slowly rebuilds the tired old farmhouse. And as the farm comes to life under Ellie's care, Ellie's spark returns too. Because as every day passes, Ellie begins to realise that there is something special about Seabreeze Farm, and there's no other place she'd rather be. This book was previously published as two novellas - Give Me Your Answer Do and Second Chances at Channel View Farm. Praise for Jo Bartlett: 'I love second chance stories. I love returning home stories. So a book combining both is an absolute winner for me. The Cornish Midwife is simply gorgeous. Stunning setting, wonderful characters, and oozing with warmth. A triumph from Jo Bartlett.' Jessica Redland 'Perfectly written and set in the beating heart of a community, this story is a wonderful slice of Cornish escapism.' Helen J Rolfe

Made up of the old counties of Wigtownshire and The Stewartry, Galloway covers a vast swathe of Scotland's quiet southwest corner. This under-discovered area offers 260km of coast, full of sandy beaches and towering cliffs, lonely heather-clad moors and quiet hills. Add to this plenty of wildlife, a rich artistic heritage, strong spiritual influences and a climate kissed by the warming Gulf Stream, and you have a region beckoning to be visited. Darren Flint and Donald Greig's hand-picked selection of 40 walks reveals the sheer variety of landscapes that makes Galloway so special - from the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point, to the sweeping Nith Estuary, via Merrick, South Scotland's highest hill and plenty of hidden corners.

R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is not a guidebook, though I hope it gives the reader some ideas on places worth seeing, accommodation worth considering, and decent restaurants worth dining in. It does not normally give a list of possible places to stay (only places I have experienced myself being included), but at the end of each chapter, there will be a "Practicalities" page containing the following: 1 Useful websites on places, maps, and transport. In general, sites relevant to more than one chapter will be found the first time they are relevant and are referenced in later chapters. 2 Accommodation on these pages will be only where I have stayed. I go for cheaper places when I travel alone, although I nearly always choose en-suite rooms as I got older, and moderately cheap when I went with Pam. In general, absence of comment means it is OK, bearing this in mind. 3 Restaurants are only mentioned on these pages if they are particularly good, either absolutely or in terms of value for money-or if definitely not recommended. 4 Must-sees appear in the chapters themselves but will be summarised on these pages. The index is based on my historic fury at finding pages, only to get a totally uninformative mention of the place in passing. Text (normal print) references are meant to show the first or only page with information about the place. Those planning holidays may find it more helpful to go immediately to pages shown in italic print, where they will often find helpful URLs. I have checked all the multitude of URLs in this book in February 2012, inserting a lot of new ones in place of dead sites. Occasionally my comments on a site may be a bit dodgy now, but there are some great sites here. I'm not sure how I overcame temptation to spend ages just looking at some

Walking Class Heroes - Pioneers of the Right to Roam (Paperback): Roly Smith Walking Class Heroes - Pioneers of the Right to Roam (Paperback)
Roly Smith; Foreword by Stuart Maconie
R292 Discovery Miles 2 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The twentieth anniversary of the Countryside & Rights of Way (CRoW) Act in 2020 provides a good opportunity to look back on the doughty band of campaigners who fought for so long to give ramblers their cherished right to roam. This century-old battle brought to the fore a number of larger-than-life characters who were prepared to go to extreme lengths--in some cases even imprisonment--to reclaim the right of access which were taken from the people by the hated Enclosure Acts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This book describes the life and work of twenty of these "wilderness warriors", retelling the battles they fought against seemingly intractable politicians and the Establishment and includes memories of personal encounters by the author with many of them. From the nature-loving romantic poet John Clare and access pioneers such as Tom Stephenson and Benny Rothman, to present-day activists and writers such as Jim Perrin, Fiona Reynolds and Kate Ashbrook, Walking Class Heroes describes the contributions made by philanthropists, writers and political militants. Their battlegrounds included the Peak District, Dartmoor and Scotland and their tactics encompassed campaigning journalism, legal dexterity and even mass trespass. Some are no longer with us of course, but several others are continuing the fight for the same kind of public access to the countryside currently enjoyed by our neighbours in Scotland and the rest of Europe. Roly Smith was recently described by a reviewer as "one of Britain's most knowledgeable countryside writers". He has written over ninety books on the British countryside and is vice-president of the Outdoor Writers' and Photographers' Guild, having been its president for twelve years, and is also a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers. A journalist by training, Roly was Head of Information Services for the Peak District National Park for thirteen years, where he became known as "Mr Peak District".

Momentous Mobilities - Anthropological Musings on the Meanings of Travel (Hardcover): Noel B. Salazar Momentous Mobilities - Anthropological Musings on the Meanings of Travel (Hardcover)
Noel B. Salazar
R2,866 Discovery Miles 28 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Grounded in scholarly analysis and personal reflection, and drawing on a multi-sited and multi-method research design, Momentous Mobilities disentangles the meanings attached to temporary travels and stays abroad and offers empirical evidence as well as novel theoretical arguments to develop an anthropology of mobility. Both focusing specifically on how various societies and cultures imagine and value boundary-crossing mobilities "elsewhere" and drawing heavily on his own European lifeworld, the author examines momentous travels abroad in the context of education, work, and spiritual quests and the search for a better quality of life.

Neolocalism and Tourism - Understanding a Global Movement (Hardcover): Linda Ingram, Susan Slocum, Christina Cavaliere Neolocalism and Tourism - Understanding a Global Movement (Hardcover)
Linda Ingram, Susan Slocum, Christina Cavaliere
R2,902 Discovery Miles 29 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Neolocalism and Tourism: Understanding a Global Movement is the first comprehensive analysis of neolocalism in the tourism context and provides a forum to discuss the latest developments, trends, and research involving tourism and neolocalism, as well as exploring new areas for consideration. Synergies between neolocalism and tourism can contribute to a greater understanding of the complexities of sustainability through increases in community involvement, which enhances local pride and local sourcing. The role of local production, distribution, and consumption can link people to landscapes and contribute to a deeper understanding of sense of place, which in turns garners support for local enterprises and local causes. This edited collection: * Outlines the theory of neolocalism and features neolocalism in relation to tourism; * Brings a new level of scrutiny to the stand-alone concept of "neolocal" as a rising phenomenon in sustainable tourism development and tourism product development studies; * Highlights the versatility and innovating applications of neolocalism within the wider tourism debate; and * Contains international contributions and examples (both applied and conceptual) from global experts.

Patricia Parinejad
R1,091 Discovery Miles 10 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After Mallorca and the first successful volume of the Green series by teNeues, photographer Patricia Parinejad has now travelled to Namibia and spent time there to capture in impressive photographs the work of a number of environmental projects, sustainability initiatives, green hotels, lodges and camps, conservation and research programmes and local producers, farmers and craftsmen.  Together with poetic as well as informative texts this has resulted in the extraordinary illustrated book Green Namibia. In New York Theatre Walks, Howard Kissel provides a series of seven self-guided walking tours not just of the theatre district but of the East and West Village, the Lower East Side, and the Upper West Side - neighborhoods uptown and downtown that illuminate the theatre's intimate relationship with the city. On one tour, we follow the career of Irving Berlin from the sites of his theatrical triumphs to the ultra-posh corner where this Lower East Side boy eventually made his home. There's also "Adolph Green's Daily 'Commute, '" a route on which he went to meet and work with his musical theatre writing partner Betty Comden, and on a culinary tour we see the way Times Square eateries contributed to theatre history. The book abounds in Broadway anecdotes, but it also gives the walker a sense of the city's own complex, rich history. East Side, West Side, All Around the Town, New York Theatre Walks provides enjoyment and instruction not just for visitors eager to get off the beaten path but for the native who wants to find the theatrical past lying behind the sights one passes on a regular basis.

Secrets of the Great Ocean Liners (Hardcover): John G. Sayers Secrets of the Great Ocean Liners (Hardcover)
John G. Sayers
R668 Discovery Miles 6 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Before the advent of commercial transatlantic flights in the early 1950s, the only way to travel between continents was by sea. In the golden age of ocean liners, between the late nineteenth century and the Second World War, shipping companies ensured their vessels were a home away from home, providing entertainment, dining, sleeping quarters and smoking lounges to accommodate passengers of all ages and budgets, for voyages that could last as long as three months. Secrets of the Great Ocean Liners leads the reader through each of the stages – and secrets – of ocean liner travel, from booking a ticket and choosing a cabin to shore excursions, dining, on-board games, social events, romances, and disembarking on arrival. Additional chapters disclose wartime voyages and disasters at sea. The shipping companies produced glamorous brochures, sailing schedules, voyage logs, passenger lists, postcards and menus, all of which help us to savour the challenges, etiquette and luxury of ocean liner travel. Diaries, letters and journals written on board also reveal a host of behind-the-scenes secrets and fascinating insights into the experience of travelling by sea. This book dives into a vast, unique collection to reveal the scandals, glamour, challenges and tragedies of ocean liner travel.

'The authors of this absorbing book have a strong command of detail, context and narrative structure... the results are impressively claustrophobic.' - Times Literary Supplement 'Gripping... The authors skillfully capture the fear and claustrophobia. A riveting real-life drama.' - Kirkus 'Cabin Fever is riveting, taut, and extensively researched. Smith and Franklin have written a page-turning adventure that will keep you reading late into the night.' - Martin Dugard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Taking Paris 'A gripping account of how an invisible stowaway - the Covid-19 virus - transformed a fun-filled luxury cruise into an unimaginable nightmare.' - Sara Gay Forden, bestselling author of House of Gucci 'Extensive first-hand testimony and the authors' brisk, matter-of-fact style enrich this propulsive account of how a holiday cruise turned into a nightmare. Readers will be riveted.' - Publishers Weekly In early 2020, the world was on edge. An ominous virus was spreading and no one knew what the coming weeks would bring. Far from the hotspots, the cruise ship Zaandam was preparing to sail from Buenos Aires loaded with 1,200 passengers - British, American, Australian, European and South American tourists, plus 600 crew. Most passengers were over the age of 65. There was concern about the virus in the news but that was oceans away. Escaping to sea at the ends of the earth for a few weeks seemed like it might be a good option. The cruise line had said the voyage would go ahead as scheduled and it would be safe. Within days, people aboard the Zaandam began to fall sick. The world's ports shut down. Zaandam became a top story on the news and was denied safe harbour everywhere. With only two doctors aboard and few medical supplies to test for or treat Covid-19, and with dwindling food and water, the ship wandered the oceans on an unthinkable journey. Cabin Fever is a riveting narrative thriller, taking readers behind the scenes of the ship's complex workings, and below decks into the personal lives of passengers and crew who were caught unprepared for the deadly ordeal that lay ahead. It is a story layered with moments of peril, perseverance and kindness. A remarkable tale that is filled with individual acts of heroism and the struggles and the tragedies of the crew and passengers.
