"Retired? Do you have the urge to travel but don't quite know where to start? I'm here to answer your questions and help you on your way. After my retirement, I started my adventures with a trip to the heart of Kenya, camping out in the bush, listening to the lions roar from my tent. Was I nervous at first? You bet But the more I travelled, the more my confidence grew. You may have similar reservations about taking your first trip, but with the help of this book, I'm confident you'll experiencing incredible new places and new cultures before you know it Peter Barber is a well-seasoned traveller. The vast majority of Peter's trips have taken place since he retired in his mid 50's in 2006. He has travelled extensively throughout Africa and Europe. He has not only travelled for pleasure but also followed his passion and volunteered in wildlife conservation in Kenya and Namibia. He also developed a second career as a wildlife photographer with his photos being used in calendars and books. This blend of travel for pleasure, as well as volunteering later in life gives Peter a unique understanding and appreciation for the roadblocks facing the mature traveller. I wrote this book because I see many people of my age sitting at home seemingly just passing time; not because they are lazy or because they don't care, but simply because they don't know how to take that first step to get up off the couch and get going. I believe what you will learn by reading this book will give you the confidence to take that all-important first step and taking the trip of your dreams. The format for this book is a little unusual but I hope it will make it easier for you to use. The book is organized around the answers to your important travel questions. I designed the book this way to give you the feel as if we were sitting together over a cup of coffee and we were discussing all the questions you need answered. I hope this book will help remove any obstacles you may have concerning starting your travel adventures later in life. Lets GET UP AND GET GOING together A few years ago, I was having trouble deciding if a Canadian Battlefield tour to Europe was right for my wife and me. After talking to Peter, we decided to put our doubts aside and go. We had a fantastic time and we are currently making plans for a third visit to Europe. Thanks Peter - Dennis Chawrun, Victoria BC, Canada My wife and I had often thought of travelling to Africa, but we never seemed to get beyond talking about it. Then Peter told us about his trips and gave us some practical advise on how to get beyond talking and actually planning and taking the trip. We went on a safari to South Africa and we loved it. We recently enjoyed a river cruise in Europe. Thanks for the advice Peter. - Rudy Nielsen, Vancouver

You don't need to be ultra-fit or highly experienced in the outdoors to enjoy outdoor guru Patrick Kinsella's selection of 30 activities across Britain. 'A sense of adventure and an explorer's heartbeat' is all that's required, he says, and he should know, having spent two decades walking, running, riding, paddleboarding, swimming, canoeing, kayaking... and more besides, in all corners of the country. Bradt's Caving, Canyoning, Coasteering... is both an atlas of adventure and book of secrets, enticing readers out of their comfort zone to explore the often-unseen elements and quieter corners of Britain, where the wild experiences live. Some of the activities described take place on the very edges of large urban centres, easily accessible for anyone, yet even many locals don't know about them. Others happen in far-flung corners of the country - places people may never have considered exploring. 'This title will take you on a highly adventurous tour of Britain's extraordinary cliffs, caves, canyons, coasts, forests, fells, beaches, Munros, moors and tors, via a range of outdoor pursuits - many of which were conceived and pioneered on this island' says Kinsella. 'It's all about wild time spent in wonderful places, from the mysterious depths of the labyrinthine limestone underworld beneath the Mendip Hills to the top of ice-clad arêtes and snow-dusted peaks of monstrous Munros in the Scottish Highlands, via seascapes and sub-aquatic environment in Devon and Cornwall, tumbling streams and ghylls in the Lake District, and cascade-concealed caverns in the waterfall-soaked world of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) in Wales. It's not for the faint of heart, but there are escapades here to excite everyone.' Whether you're an experienced outdoor type or someone who's new to the outdoors but seeking guidance on where to go and what to do, a wildlife and fresh-air enthusiast or an armchair traveller, a lone adventurer or family with young children, Caving, Canyoning, Coasteering... is brimful of ideas. And if the adrenaline gets too much, you'll even find advice on the sedate Japanese art of forest bathing.

Cologne is not a polished and shiny place, but has its rough edges. It is scarcely possible to explain the city in abstract terms. You have to see and feel it, and this is exactly the starting point for this new guide to Cologne.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Travels with George . . . is quintessential Philbrick-a lively, courageous, and masterful achievement." -The Boston Globe Does George Washington still matter? Bestselling author Nathaniel Philbrick argues for Washington's unique contribution to the forging of America by retracing his journey as a new president through all thirteen former colonies, which were now an unsure nation. Travels with George marks a new first-person voice for Philbrick, weaving history and personal reflection into a single narrative. When George Washington became president in 1789, the United States of America was still a loose and quarrelsome confederation and a tentative political experiment. Washington undertook a tour of the ex-colonies to talk to ordinary citizens about his new government, and to imbue in them the idea of being one thing-Americans. In the fall of 2018, Nathaniel Philbrick embarked on his own journey into what Washington called "the infant woody country" to see for himself what America had become in the 229 years since. Writing in a thoughtful first person about his own adventures with his wife, Melissa, and their dog, Dora, Philbrick follows Washington's presidential excursions: from Mount Vernon to the new capital in New York; a monthlong tour of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island; a venture onto Long Island and eventually across Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The narrative moves smoothly between the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries as we see the country through both Washington's and Philbrick's eyes. Written at a moment when America's founding figures are under increasing scrutiny, Travels with George grapples bluntly and honestly with Washington's legacy as a man of the people, a reluctant president, and a plantation owner who held people in slavery. At historic houses and landmarks, Philbrick reports on the reinterpretations at work as he meets reenactors, tour guides, and other keepers of history's flame. He paints a picture of eighteenth-century America as divided and fraught as it is today, and he comes to understand how Washington compelled, enticed, stood up to, and listened to the many different people he met along the way-and how his all-consuming belief in the union helped to forge a nation.
Let Secret Seville guide you around the unusual and unfamiliar. Step off the beaten track with this fascinating Seville guide book and let our local expert show you the well-hidden treasures of this beautiful city. Ideal for local inhabitants, curious visitors and armchair travellers alike. Why is there a stone relief of Grace Kelly on the wall of Seville Town Hall and how can you track down the railway from the Ibero-American Expo of 1929? Where might you find the legacy of Christopher Columbus' son, a medieval Jewish cemetery in a car park, the oddest of barbershops, forgotten souvenirs from the Guadalquivir steamboats, Masonic symbols in a church, the last remaining vestiges of the Andalusian pavilions from the '29 Expo, a little-known Modernist electric power station, an example of the Nazi Enigma machine, a collection of Chinese and Japanese art in a Renaissance mansion or the pillars of a medieval synagogue? Far from the crowds and the well-worn cliches, Seville still has many hidden gems it only reveals to locals and visitors who head off the beaten track. An essential guide for those who thought they knew Seville well or are seeking to discover another side of the city.

Here he presents 80 of the loveliest and most diminutive places to camp in Britain, many of which are known only to locals. Each entry features a quick-reference guide to facilities, pubs that serve food, shops where you can stock up on provisions and local attractions, and there's a useful Ordnance Survey map to guide you in.

• Combines material culture, environmental history and history of science for the first time to look at living things rather than non-living and human-made things/objects enabling students and museum professionals alike to see the importance of including living things within the history of material culture and the early modern world to understand the full scope. • Provides a deeper understand of global exchange and the history of commodities/collecting for early modern students and museum professionals to understand the development of trade in the early modern period and the creation of a system of trade based on moving things from their geography of origin to another area that valued them more highly. • Enables students and scientist to see the theoretical and empirical interventions with the living objects which reveal connected histories that link Europe to other regions of the globe, by way of naturalists, natural philosophers, collectors, merchants, apothecaries, physicians, agriculturalists, and professional scientists, to inform their own studies and research.
We live, eat, sleep and dream travel - it's become a booming industry, a top conversation topic and, frankly, an obsession. But are we really free to roam the world as we wish? What does God say about travel? Shouldn't we instead be doing evangelism? Where is the clear missionary purpose in all this? The author knows all too well what it is to have caught the wanderlust bug. He skilfully interweaves his, and others, travelling experiences as he applies the Bible's teaching on this vital subject. Marvel with him at the generosity of our creator God who has given us this amazing world. And learn how to make the most of your travels. |
