Heritage Conservation in the United States - Enhancing the Presence of the Past (Hardcover): John H. Sprinkle, Jr. Heritage Conservation in the United States - Enhancing the Presence of the Past (Hardcover)
John H. Sprinkle, Jr.
R3,757 Discovery Miles 37 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Heritage Conservation in the United States begins to trace the growth of the American historic preservation movement over the last 50 years, viewed from the context of the civil rights and environmental movements. The first generation of the New Preservation (1966-1991) was characterized by the establishment of the bureaucratic structures that continue to shape the practice of heritage conservation in the United States. The National Register of Historic Places began with less than a thousand historic properties and grew to over 50,000 listings. Official recognition programs expanded, causing sites that would never have been considered as either significant or physically representative in 1966 now being regularly considered as part of a historic preservation planning process. The book uses the story of how sites associated with African American history came to be officially recognized and valued, and how that process challenged the conventions and criteria that governed American preservation practice. This book is designed for the historic preservation community and students engaged in the study of historic preservation.

Memory Fragmentation from Below and Beyond the State - Uses of the Past in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings (Hardcover):... Memory Fragmentation from Below and Beyond the State - Uses of the Past in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings (Hardcover)
Anne Bazin, Emmanuelle Hébert, Valérie Rosoux, Eric Sangar
R3,759 Discovery Miles 37 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume suggests a model of collective memory that distinguishes between two conceptual logics of memory fragmentation: vertical fragmentation and horizontal fragmentation. It offers a series of case studies of conflict and post-conflict collective memory, shedding light on the ways various actors participate in the production, dissemination, and contestation of memory discourses. With attention to the characteristics of both vertical and horizontal memory fragmentation, the book addresses the plurality of diverging, and often conflicting, memory discourses that are produced within the public sphere of a given community. It analyzes the juxtaposition, tensions, and interactions between narratives produced beyond or below the central state, often transcending national boundaries. The book is structured according to the type of actors involved in a memory fragmentation process. It explores how states have been trying to produce and impose memory discourses on civil societies, sometimes even against the experiences of their own citizens, and how such efforts as well as backlash from actors below and beyond the state have led to horizontal and vertical memory fragmentation. Furthermore, it considers the attempts by states’ representatives to reassert control of national memory discourses and the subsequent resistances they face. As such, this volume will appeal to sociology and political science scholars interested in memory studies in post-conflict societies.

111 Places for Kids in Bristol That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback): Martin Booth, Barbara Evripidou 111 Places for Kids in Bristol That You Shouldn't Miss (Paperback)
Martin Booth, Barbara Evripidou
R348 Discovery Miles 3 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Welcome to the home of Wallace and Gromit, and Blackbeard and Banksy. Bristol is where the world’s first solid chocolate bar was created (Ribena was also invented here) and you can still watch delicious chocolate creations made by modern day Willy Wonkas. The city has a hidden castle (you just need to know where to look) and secret vaults underneath the Clifton Suspension Bridge only rediscovered recently after being hidden for more than 100 years. Climb inside these vaults, or into the cockpit of the final Concorde to fly or ride your skateboard in what used to be a swimming pool. If water is your thing, you can surf guaranteed waves at an inland surfing lake or take a trip in a boat that used to fight fires. Science and art collide at We The Curious, which has the UK’s only 3D planetarium. If you think you know Bristol, think again. Allow this book to be your guide to Bristol’s best bits for kids.

Wilderness Trekking Oman - Map - Western Hajar Mountains (Sheet map): John Edwards Wilderness Trekking Oman - Map - Western Hajar Mountains (Sheet map)
John Edwards
R323 Discovery Miles 3 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This map is a practical addition to the guide for hiking in the Western Hajar, which is the western portion of the main mountain range in the Sultanate of Oman. The best walking weather in Oman is from mid-November to March. The traverse follows the spine of the mountains in a point-to-point walk taking sixteen days. It consists of eight one-day walks, two two-day walks and one four-day walk. There is a road intersection with a village or hotel between each of these eleven sections making it practical to walk sections rather than the full traverse. The track climbs to the highest accessible peak in the country at 2999m and finishes in remote dry valleys, called wadis, where impregnable cliffs have precluded road construction and electricity transmission. This has preserved the Arabian mountain lifestyle that has existed for centuries. This traverse is for hikers who are competent with GPS navigation, as only six of the sixteen day tracks are marked. There are two shorter options, of which one has two chain ladders that do not require ropes. These options together reduce the traverse to twelve days or make two multi-day circuits, one with hotels and the other entirely in the wilderness. A loop in the traverse can be used to make another three-day wilderness circuit, or can be skipped altogether to further reduce the traverse duration to nine days. In Oman there are no mountain rangers, so this traverse is for experienced hikers who are comfortable looking after themselves. I have selected the route over many years by linking ancient and current donkey trading and walking tracks. Exploring the Hajar Mountains with his family and Omani companions was John Edwards' passion during the sixteen years he spent living in Oman. His ambition with this project is to resurrect the historic trading routes connecting the mountain villages, enabling walking tourists to help sustain an emerging hospitality industry that uses some of the ancient village houses as hotel rooms, which otherwise will fall into ruin.

Trope New York (Hardcover): Sam Landers Trope New York (Hardcover)
Sam Landers
R918 Discovery Miles 9 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trope New York, the fifth volume in the Trope City Editions series, celebrates the architecture and urban landscapes of the “city that never sleeps,” one of the world’s cultural capitals. The collection highlights the photographic images of emerging and independent photographers from New York and beyond, who through their passion for the craft, creative development, and social media smarts have attracted impressive followings on Instagram. This carefully curated and bound collection of photographs offers a new perspective of New York. Each chapter is accompanied by a map, along with the locations where the photographs were taken. From high above Central Park to the lights of Times Square, these images command a strong point of view: digitally processed, filtered, toned, de-saturated, sharpened, for a very urban sensibility. Showcasing both the colorful flash and quiet elegance of contemporary New York, the images reveal distinctive and dramatic visions of one of the world’s greatest cities. A thoroughly modern collection, the book includes photographs of some of the city's iconic destinations like the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, and the Chrysler Building, as well as some of the city's newest attractions, including Little Island, the Edge, and the Oculus.

Wallace P.H. Chang
R3,753 Discovery Miles 37 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the concept of human landscape in rural settlements in Southern China, where communities and their cultural landscapes are facing contemporary challenges following a period of rapid urbanization in the last 50 years. While metropolitan cities, such as Hong Kong, are experiencing accelerated urban development, underpopulated rural villages are struggling to maintain the cultural heritage of their regions. Rediscovery of Cultural Landscapes in Southern China provides a detailed account into indigenous living cultures in traditional, rural settlements upon natural landscapes. Beginning with an overview of the theoretical framework, the book presents six unique cases, including: Tai O, Yim Tin Tsai, Lai Chi Wo, Nga Tsin Wai, Cangdong, and Meinong, while illustrating a relevant comparison between Hakka and Satoyama landscape systems. The spectrum of theoretical and case analyses allows for a rethinking of the evolving cultural landscape’s positioning with valuable heritages in the context of a post-industrial society. The book is written towards reinterpreting the cultural landscape by conceptualizing the human landscape for scholars, practitioners, and students interested in rural-cultural conservation and revitalization, heritage management, traditional architecture and landscape planning, and urban-rural development.
