Today e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter are sometimes used to spread
hateful messages and slurs masking as humor. In the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries postcards served this purpose. The
images collected in this volume make it painfully clear that
anti-Semitic propaganda did not simply begin with the Nazis. Nor
was it the sole province of politicians, journalists, and
rabble-rousers. One of the most virulent forms of anti-Semitism
during this time was spread by quite ordinary people through
postcards. Of the millions of postcards exchanged during their
heyday of 1890 through 1920, a considerable percentage carried the
anti-Semitic images that publishers churned out to meet public
demand, reflecting deep-seated attitudes of society. Over 250 examples of such postcards, largely from the
pre-Holocaust era, are reproduced here for the first
time--selected, translated, and historically contextualized by one
of the world's foremost postcard collectors. Although representing
but a small sample of the many thousands that were in print, these
examples nonetheless offer a disturbing glimpse--one shocking to
the modern sensibility--into the many permutations of anti-Semitism
eagerly circulated by millions of people. In so doing, they help us
to better understand a phenomenon still pervasive today.
The late-nineteenth century in Europe was a period of profound political, social, and technological change. One result of these changes was the rise in France of an upper-bourgeois bohemian class. Many of its members stimulated interest in unique forms of artistic expression such as illustrated books. On account of their influence, an atmosphere of intense bibliophilic activity came to define French culture at the turn of the century. The New Bibliopolis explores the role of amateurs in promoting the book arts in France during this period. Drawing on extensive original research, Willa Z. Silverman looks at the ways in which book collectors supported print culture. She shows how, through the admiration demonstrated by collectors for this medium, print came to be a crucial part of popular conceptions of aesthetics. As collectors, publishers, authors, designers, and directors of bibliophile societies, reviews, and small presses, these book lovers became passionate and prolific interlocutors of the printed word in a uniquely artistic epoch. Silverman analyzes subjects as diverse as the relationship between book collecting and aesthetic and cultural currents such as Symbolism; the gendered nature of book collecting; the increased collaboration between authors and illustrators; and the marketing of fine books at international exhibits. The New Bibliopolis is an important contribution to the study of book history, French sociocultural history, and fine and decorative arts.

Celebrating a wide range of punk design in vinyl cover art, posters, flyers, fanzines, and other ephemera, The Art of Punk highlights the movement primarily within graphic design and print, while also considering its impact on wider popular culture. Punk was based on immediacy-an often-inspired amateurism and underground, close-knit communities that burned brightly but were not intended to extend beyond the gig, the event, the scene, the moment. Punk songs by such legendary bands as the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Damned, the New York Dolls, the Germs, and the Clash tended to be short, fast, and aggressive, and the oft-repeated credo "If it can't be said in three minutes, it's not worth saying" was adopted as standard practice, extending in turn to an entire ethos for the whole subculture. The book is arranged chronologically, and by genre, and features more than 900 visual examples both by uncredited artists and internationally renowned designers and design groups, alongside interviews with, and commentary by, many of the artists concerned.

'The great picture-galleries may be likened to the temples of art... but every day and all day long we breathe the atmosphere of ornament.' Originally published in 1882, Every-Day Art is a series of essays on design and decoration in daily life by Lewis Foreman Day (1845-1910), a pioneering member of the Arts and Crafts movement. Day trained as a stained glass maker before becoming a celebrated designer of textiles, ceramics, wallpaper and furniture. Sharing with his contemporary William Morris the belief that objects could be both useful and beautiful, Day considers questions of taste, the past, interiors, nature and craftsmanship. Progressive yet undeniably Victorian, he offers pithy comment on the elevated status of so-called high art compared to the decorative arts, and has sage advice for 'Ladies and Amateurs' considering artistic careers. His entertaining and perceptive essays are anchored by a strong belief that craft and honestly acquired skill should win out over the whims and excesses of fashion.
A revealing and nostalgic look at how art was taught more than 100 years ago, Decorative Brushwork and Elementary Design is an inspiring guide to creating patterns and graphic motifs. Originally published in 1902 as a resource for schoolteachers, the book is of both historical and current interest, offering advice on choosing paper, brushes and colours and on developing skills in line, tone and composition. Additionally, hundreds of black and white Edwardian designs taken from nature, textiles, pottery and architecture beautifully illustrate the artistic principles.
