The new volume in this series on contemporary landscape architecture is concerned with how life quality can be increased by improving our living environment through planning and raising the quality of public space. How green do we want our housing to be? What are the essential criteria of a successful planning of open space in residential architecture? Will the changed relationship between city and country contribute to that, perhaps in the form of urban agriculture?
This book is being published on the occasion of the German Landscape Architecture Award 2011, the Special Housing Environment Award, and the largest competition for ideas from students and young professionals in landscape architecture and open space planning: the Peter Joseph Lenne Award. With a revised design and reworked structure, the essays and project descriptions in the book reveal the strategies with which the profession is meeting new challenges.

"We don't sell gardens; we sell images of gardens." This observation on the part of a landscape architect makes it clear just how important it is that a design be effectively communicated to the community, building sponsors, and the public. Drawings, models, simulations, and films communicate the designers' proposed ideas and solutions, but they also convey their attitude toward the use of nature and the environment. With myriad possibilities - including computer programs as well as hand drawings and models, which continue to be widely used - and strong competition in the field, there is now a huge variety of visual representations, with agreed-upon rules but also a great deal of freedom. In three large sections, this books sifts through the currently commonplace and available techniques and evaluates them in terms of their informative value and persuasive power, always illustrating its points with analysis of examples from international firms. An introductory look at the development thus far is followed by a systematic presentation of modes of representation in two, three, and four dimensions - in the plane, in space, and in the temporal process. The second section deals with the sequence of modes within the workflow: from the initial sketch through concept and implementation planning all the way to the finished product. The third section deals with the strategic use of visualizations in the context of competitions, future scenarios, and large-scale landscape planning. The focus in this section is not on the familiar fundamentals of the relevant techniques, but rather on the methods and forms of visual representation in contemporary landscape architecture.

Land Use Scenarios - Environmental Consequences of Development (Hardcover): Alan W. Shearer, David A. Mouat, Scott D. Bassett,... Land Use Scenarios - Environmental Consequences of Development (Hardcover)
Alan W. Shearer, David A. Mouat, Scott D. Bassett, Michael W Binford, Craig W Johnson, …
R5,738 Discovery Miles 57 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Any alteration of the natural processes occurring on a piece of land will have expected as well as unanticipated effects, and those effects have little regard for arbitrary human boundaries. Consequently, it is not enough for land managers to consider only how they might maintain the parcels for which they are responsible; they must also anticipate how changes to neighboring lands might impact their properties.

Land Use Scenarios: Environmental Consequences of Development demonstrates how the success of local decision making is largely determined by factors that are difficult to control or forecast. It shows the importance of geographic vulnerability analysis, which takes into consideration possible scenarios about how, where, and when future patterns of land use might develop. It points to the consideration of critical uncertainties those aspects of the future, that while difficult to predict, may have a profound impact on pending decisions.

Detailing research supported by the United States Marine Corps, the text presents a study of the region of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and Air Station Miramar in California. While this area remains largely un-built, but extensively used, ongoing regional growth is having dramatic impact on the land and must be factored into any decision making. This research

  • Provides a better understanding of the potential consequences of urban development on native flora and fauna
  • Describes theoretical concerns prompted by scenario-based projections
  • Gives an overview of the history of scenario-based techniques for urban and regional planning
  • Helps define measures for maintaining undeveloped lands in rapidly developing areas

In publishing this research, the investigators provide information regarding issues of urban development and possible environmental consequences to stakeholders and jurisdictions whose actions may influence the future of the region. More broadly, the book will aid managers and stakeholders from other areas to engage spatial contingencies toward the goal of developing more resilient landscapes.

Revolutionizing landscape architecture through the use of intelligent materials and technologies Living Systems surveys a wide array of innovative approaches to material technologies within the field of landscape architecture. The selected projects and materials exhibit a contemporary demand for technological landscapes and the collaboration between designers, engineers, scientists and ecologists. The book proposes a synthesis between technology and theory, focusing on growth, flow, metabolism, climate, and atmospheric phenomena. Projects and materials are cross-referenced according to performance criteria, processes, and properties. Each of the 36 international projects and 23 material technologies is presented with drawing details and construction photographs. Descriptions of key processes and adaptive qualities provide an analysis of the various complex systems featured, such as vertical growth structures, flood prevention, stormwater infiltration and erosion control. Projects featured include works by West8, GROSS.MAX, Weiss-Manfredi Architects, Field Operations, Kathryn Gustafson, and Vogt Landschaftarchitekten.

The Politics of Urban Beauty (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Michele H. Bogart The Politics of Urban Beauty (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Michele H. Bogart
R2,064 Discovery Miles 20 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since its founding in 1898, the Art Commission of the City of New York (ACNY) has served as the city's aesthetic gatekeeper, evaluating all works of art intended for display on city property. And over the years, the commission's domain has expanded dramatically to include everything from parks and courthouses to trash cans and sidewalks. In "The" "Politics of Urban Beauty," Michele H. Bogart argues that this unprecedented authority has made the commission host to some complex negotiations--involving artists, architects, business leaders, activists, and politicians--about not only the role of art in urban design, but also the shape and meaning of the city and its public spaces.
A former vice president of the ACNY, Bogart tells its story here from an insider's perspective, tracing the commission's history from its origins as an outgrowth of progressive reform to its role in New York's reconstruction after 9/11. Drawing on archival correspondence, drawings, and photographs from commission collections, Bogart presents bracing examples of works--ranging from New Deal murals to Louis Kahn's unbuilt Memorial to Six Million Jewish Martyrs--that illuminate the ACNY's subtle yet powerful role in shaping New York's identity.
"The Politics of Urban Beauty" is thus a fascinating history of a New York art world that paralleled--and sometimes unpredictably intersected with--the more familiar realm of prominent architects, painters, galleries, and museums. Bogart's fresh view adds a critical dimension to our understanding of "the city beautiful" and makes an important and lively contribution to the study of art history, urban design, and New York City itself.

Ornaments of the Metropolis - Siegfried Kracauer and Modern Urban Culture (Paperback, New Ed): Henrik Reeh Ornaments of the Metropolis - Siegfried Kracauer and Modern Urban Culture (Paperback, New Ed)
Henrik Reeh; Translated by John Irons
R1,114 Discovery Miles 11 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Variations on the theme of the ornament in Kracauer's urban writings, suggesting ways in which the subjective can reappropraite urban life. For Siegfried Kracauer, the urban ornament was not just an aspect of design; it was the medium through which city dwellers interpreted the metropolis itself. In Ornaments of the Metropolis, Henrik Reeh traces variations on the theme of the ornament in Kracauer's writings on urbanism, from his early journalism in Germany between the wars to his "sociobiography" of Jacques Offenbach in Paris. Kracauer (1889-1966), often associated with the Frankfurt School and the intellectual milieu of Walter Benjamin, is best known for his writings on cinema and the philosophy of history. Reeh examines Kracauer's lesser-known early work, much of it written for the trendsetting newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung in the 1920s and early 1930s, and analyzes Kracauer's continuing reflections on modern urban life, through the pivotal idea of ornament. Kracauer deciphers the subjective experience of the city by viewing fragments of the city as dynamic ornaments; an employment exchange, a day shelter for the homeless, a movie theater, and an amusement park become urban microcosms. Reeh focuses on three substantial works written by Kracauer before his emigration to the United States in 1940. In the early autobiographical novel Ginster, Written by Himself, a young architect finds aesthetic pleasure in the ornamental forms that are largely unused in the profession of the time. The collection Streets of Berlin and Elsewhere, with many essays from Kracauer's years in Berlin, documents the subjectiveness of urban life. Finally, Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of His Time shows how the superficial-in a sense, ornamental-milieu of the operetta evolved into a critical force during the Second Empire. Reeh argues that Kracauer's novel, essays, and historiography all suggest ways in which the subjective can reappropriate urban life. The book also includes a series of photographs by the author that reflect the ornamental experience of the metropolis in Paris, Frankfurt, and other cities.

Tom Turner
R3,418 Discovery Miles 34 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Garden design and usage has been a feature of human civilisation as far back as Neolithic times, when the first gardens began to be used for residential, horticultural and sacred tasks. Tom Turner follows the entire history of the European garden from its prehistoric roots right up to the present day in this beautifully illustrated book.

European Gardens is divided into ten periods of history and garden development, detailing the advancement of land usage for over 10,000 years. Some of the topics covered in this comprehensive book include the Egyptian gardens of the Pharaohs, the castle gardens of medieval times, eclectic gardens of the nineteenth century and abstract gardens of the last 100 years. The geographical scope of this book covers the whole of the European continent, and touches the garden designs of North Africa and the Middle East.

Tom Turner is a skilled landscape architect and garden historian, who supports his engaging writing with his own detailed plans and diagrams. European Gardens also features almost 1,000 colour photographs from across the continent allowing the reader to see for themselves how the design and structure of gardens has developed over time.

A companion to the Asian Gardens book, published by Routledge in 2010, European Gardens is a development of the original Garden History book from 2004.

Industrialisation, mechanisation and expansion have wrought profound changes on European cities and the surrounding landscapes in the last century. As regards the positive social and healthy development of inhabitants, landscape planning has become an integral part of all urban planning. Sometimes it is possible to truly merge nature and architecture. "best of DETAIL Landscape" presents highlights of the past few years from DETAIL: buildings that disappear into their surroundings, lush meadows revealed as roofscapes only after closer inspection, paths and walkways through jungle-like gardens. Architecture and cities can no longer be counterpoints to nature and the landscape. Rather they should strive to create stunning symbioses.

Lutzow 7 own their reputation of long standing to the representative civic open spaces that they have designed for the German Chancellery, the Reichstag building and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, among many others. Yet their design approach of "representative tranquility", as one of the book's contributions is entitled, has produced about one thousand projects over the years - seven of which, more exactly 5 built + 2 under construction, from Germany, Belgium, Italy and Ireland, form one of the main parts in this landscape-architectural monograph. Other sections strive to grasp the essence of Lutzow 7's approach to landscape design in a panoramic portfolio and also in a directory to important design tasks and typical solutions in the realm between wilderness and detail. Tom Sieverts, the creator of the "in-between city" paradigm, and Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Canadian pioneer of the return to nature-oriented design and well acquainted with the partners Cornelia Muller and Jan Wehberg's work, contribute their personal views.

This book explores the creation, restoration, enhancement, and construction of designed wetlands. It provides a practical guide for wetland design on a local site-specific scale, as well as reviews the impact of wetland design projects on the environment. More than 150 key principles and practices of wetland design and planning are presented, accompanied by detailed illustrations, and case studies demonstrate the successful application of these design principles for landscape architects and land-use planners. Especially suited to a graduate level and early professional readership, this is the first book to explore both the ecological function and art of wetlands design.

Classic Country Estates of Lake Forest is the first systematic study of this richly textured built environment. Beginning with suburban villas in the manner of Andrew Jackson Downing, Lake Forest was transformed by the work of Henry Ives Cobb, Howard Van Doren Shaw, David Adler, Harrie T. Lindeberg, Charles A. Platt, Holabird & Roche, Delano & Aldrich, Arthur Heun, and others. It was also distinguished by a tradition of innovation in landscape design, from the original Romantic picturesque town plan of 1857 to the later estate work of O. C. Simonds, the Olmsteds, Warren Manning, Rose Standish Nichols, and Jens Jensen. Architectural renderings, landscape plans, drawings, and period photographs of architecture and gardens, many of them not previously published, illustrate the work of these masters.

To forget the season, soil, and sky is to deny existence." So writes renowned landscape architect Roger G. Courtenay in "My Kind of Countryside." Whether walking the Piedmont of Virginia, canoeing the French Broad River near Asheville, North Carolina, driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or exploring Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village, Courtenay turns to his local countryside for inspiration. In "My Kind of Countryside" Courtenay delves into the nuances of his craft, inviting us to share his encounters with a myriad of landscapes and revealing how he then interprets these experiences in his sketches.

What do we actually know about these structures? About the people who built them, and why they were built? Stone walls are not simply monuments to the skill of Yankee farmers. The historical record makes clear that many were built by slaves, Indians, indentured servants, and children. Sermons in Stone is the surprising history of the walls, a story that begins in the Ice Age and has been shaped by the fencing dilemmas of the nineteenth century, by conflicts between Native Americans and colonists over land use, by America's waves of immigration and suburbanization. Beautifully illustrated by David Howell, this is an illuminating and entertaining work of the first rank.

This volume brings together the papers presented at a conference entitled 'Experiencing the Garden in the Eighteenth Century', held at the Institute of Romance Studies, Senate House, University of London on 13 March 2004. Speakers came from Europe, the United States and New Zealand, and each gave a very different perspective on the eighteenth-century landscape garden in England, France and elsewhere in Europe. The papers focused on the theme of experience, an especially important aspect of eighteenth-century garden design. Landscape gardens were created for visitors to move through on a journey from one place to the next: the garden would not be seen all at once, but would be experienced as a story unfolding. The visitor would follow a circuit around the garden, moving from light to shade, being given suggestive prompts with statues, temples and viewpoints, as if on a sensory, emotional and intellectual journey.
