The first of Beethoven's late string quartets, the 12th Quartet in E-flat Major (Op. 127) is a massive work that showcases the changes in Beethoven's compositional technique. The first movement features a regular interruption of the theme - a technique that Beethoven used in a number of late compositions, while the third movement features a tonal progression similar to one used in the finale of the 9th Symphony.

"Interpreting Music" is a comprehensive essay on understanding musical meaning and performing music meaningfully - 'interpreting music' in both senses of the term. Synthesizing and advancing two decades of highly influential work, Lawrence Kramer fundamentally rethinks the concepts of work, score, performance, performativity, interpretation, and meaning - even the very concept of music - while breaking down conventional wisdom and received ideas. Kramer argues that music, far from being closed to interpretation, is ideally open to it, and that musical interpretation is the paradigm of interpretation in general. The book illustrates the many dimensions of interpreting music through a series of case studies drawn from the classical repertoire, but its methods and principles carry over to other repertoires just as they carry beyond music by working through music to wider philosophical and cultural questions.
Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in C-sharp minor (Op. 131) is considered by many (including Beethoven himself) to be Beethoven's finest string quartet. The work consists of seven movements, played attaca, and covers all ranges of keys as it develops.
This is a biography of William Sternale Bennett. He was born in 1816, entered King's College Chapel in 1824 and the Royal Academy of Music in 1826. In 1956 he was appointed musical professor at Cambridge and permanent conductor of the Philharmonic Society. This is a facsimile of the 1907 edition.

The last of Beethoven's middle period string quartets, the String Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Opus 95, represents a departure for Beethoven. The work, which became known as the "Serioso" quartet after Beethoven's initial tempo marking of "Quartetto Serioso," was marked on the autograph as being completed in October 1810, but did not receive a first performance until 1814. Beethoven was quoted as saying the work was never intended for public performance. Throughout the quartet, Beethoven experiments with new techniques that he had not used in previous quartets, with silences and unusual tonality for a sonata form work. This is the Performer's Edition Pocket Score of the work, designed for easy transport in a case or compact carrying for study of the work.

From 1823-1826, Beethoven composed a series of string quartets which are now recognized as some of the masterworks of this genre. These quartets show Beethoven at his height as a composer, with composition occurring during the same timeframe as his Ninth Symphony. This collection includes the five late quartets (Op. 127, 130, 131, 132, & 135) as well as the Grosse Fuge (Op. 134).
Beethoven's String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat Major, Opus 74, was originally published in 1809 with the nickname "Harp" given by the publisher. This nickname is based on the impressions in the first movement with ascending arpeggios played pizzicato by alternating instruments. While portions of the work foreshadow things to come in Beethoven's late period, the fourth movement, with a traditional classical theme and variations form, stands out as a point of confusion to many Beethoven scholars. This is the Performer's Edition Pocket Score of the work, designed for easy transport in a case or compact carrying for study of the work.
