This is a unique learning aid for making rapid headway in the acquisition of comprehension and speaking ability in Khmer, the language of Cambodia. In recent years, Cambodia has moved from a society menaced by war to a society orientated to commerce. With this shift in attention from military to social and economic matters has come an increase in the number of foreign visitors and residents in the country for the purposes of tourism, aid work or investment-related activities. Many of these foreigners or 'chuun bor-tay' speak English as a first or second language, but know little of written or spoken Khmer. This dictionary is designed to enable residents and visitors to better understand both the country and its people through speaking to Cambodians in their own language. With more than 6,000 key word entries, the English-Spoken Khmer Dictionary has the distinctive feature of presenting Khmer words in an all-new easily-grasped Romanized writing system. Incorporating phrases and full sentence usage, and with a thorough introduction to Khmer grammar, the English-Spoken Khmer Dictionary is essential for tourists, business travellers, scholars and long-term Cambodia residents who wish to become more familiar with a country poised to play an increasingly significant role in the area.

Mongolian English Dictionary (Hardcover): Charles Bawden Mongolian English Dictionary (Hardcover)
Charles Bawden
R7,938 Discovery Miles 79 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Twenty-five years in the making, this is a dictionary, with English equivalents, of the modern written Mongolian language, in Cyrllic script and orthography, as used in the Mongolian People's Republic.

Consisting of some 20,000 main entries and numerous secondary entries, it has been compiled on the basis of reading and excerpting current printed material. This material has included primarily the national newspaper Unen, other newspapers, various popular, semi-popular and academic magazines and journals, and books - mostly non-fiction - in various fields of interest, and the entries are therefore very up to date.

Two unusual features of the dictionary enhance its usefulness. Occasionally some short quotations from original sources have been included, in order to promote the practical understanding of the language. Secondly, wherever possible the Tibetan originals of the Tibetan loan-words have been given, in order to facilitate further research. Previously published but only with the aim of assisting in the formulation of English equivalents of the Mongolian words and expressions. They have not been drawn on as source of vocabulary, and no entries have been copied in total from other dictionaries.

Iain Fenlon, Peter N. Miller
R3,976 Discovery Miles 39 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

L'incoronazione di Poppea is the most compelling of all early Italian operas and this has, in part, been responsible for the way in which it has become separated from its social and historical context. In this book, Iain Fenlon and Peter Miller show how an understanding of contemporary Venetian intellectual currents and preoccupations provides a key to the structure of the opera's libretto, the progress of the action and the points of emphasis in both the music and the text.

J. Redding Ware; Introduction by John Simpson
R318 R277 Discovery Miles 2 770 Save R41 (13%) Out of stock

Acutely aware of the changes in English usage at the close of the Victorian era, the lexicographer James Redding Ware (1832-1909) decided to record for posterity new and archaic words and phrases from all walks of life, from the curses in common use by sailors and the rhyming slang of the street to the jargon of the theatre dandies. Where else would you turn to learn the meaning of 'Bow-wow mutton', 'Air-hole', 'Lally-gagging' and 'Damper'? Ware's dictionary, first published in 1909, is a treasure trove of the everyday language of the nineteenth century, showing the influence of American English on Victorian slang as well as historical and innovative words and phrases. While it presents numerous expressions now obsolete, and some terms and definitions in the idiom of the era which would not now be considered acceptable, it also uncovers the origins and meaning of many slang words still in use today. Reproduced in facsimile with an introduction by John Simpson, Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, this dictionary provides a fascinating and highly entertaining witness to the colourful history of unofficial English.
