This book demonstrates exact scholarship (and an) understanding of
the way in which business works...(it has) a capacity to reduce a
mass of apparently unrelated facts into the neat shape of
theory."The Economist Describing and analyzing the part played by
Western firms and governments in the economic development of
Indonesia and Malaysia, the period covered by this survey extends
from the early decades of the nineteenth century to the 1950s.
Special attention is given to the changes that have taken place
since the Second World War. The intricate economic relations
between Westerners and Asians, and the results of changes in those
relations are fully discussed. Comparisons and contrasts with the
economic activities of Westerners in the development of China and
Japan are also examined.
At a time of great global uncertainty and instability, communities
face fracturing from the increasing influence of extremist
movements hostile to democratic and multicultural norms. Europe and
the West have grown increasingly polarised in recent years, beset
with financial crises, political instability, the rise of malicious
actors and irregular violence, and new forms of media and social
media. These factors have enabled the spread of new forms of
extremism and suggest a growing need for a response sensitive to
inequalities and divisions in wider society - a task made even more
urgent by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Routledge Handbook of Violent
Extremism and Resilience brings together research conducted
throughout Europe and the world, to analyse various articulations
of violent extremism and consider the impact that such groups and
networks have had on the wellbeing of communities and societies. It
examines different theories, factors and national case studies of
extremism, polarisation and societal fragmentation, drilling deep
into national examples to map trends across Europe, North America
and Australasia, to provide regional and state-level comparative
analysis. It also offers a thorough exploration of resilience - a
recent addition to counter-extremism policy and practice - to
consider how it has come to play this increasingly central role in
Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE), the
limitations and opportunities of such approaches, and how it could
be shared, developed, problematised and deployed in response to
violence and polarisation. The Handbook details new trends in both
violent extremism and counter-extremism response, within this
increasingly fractured global context. It critically explores the
latest theories of community violence, extremism, polarisation and
resilience, mapping them across case study countries. In doing so,
it presents new findings for students, researchers, practitioners
and policymakers seeking to understand these new patterns of
polarisation and extremism and develop community-driven responses.
This book presents novel theoretical and empirical findings on the
issue of unrecognized states and secession. The first part of the
book conceptualizes unrecognized states as entities with a national
identity and which have achieved political independence, yet are
not internationally recognized as independent states. It also
addresses topics such as the role of superpowers in secessionist
conflicts, ontological security in post-Soviet states, and factors
influencing the legitimacy of secession referenda. In turn, the
book's second part presents selected case studies on various
secessionist regions and territories, including Kurdistan, the
Caucasus, Kosovo, and Bougainville.

Rethinking the Middle East runs counter to the received wisdom in
modern Middle East studies. This discipline has been dominated by
what may be termed a culture of victimization; it views the local
populations of the Middle East Arabs in particular as the hapless
victims of alien encroachment, and blames the region's endemic
malaise on Western political and cultural imperialism. The author
contends that the influence of the Great Powers has not been the
primary force behind the region's political development, nor the
main cause of its famous volatility. He argues that the main
impetus has been provided by regional factors; and that even at
their weakest point in modern history - during the final stages of
the Ottoman Empire - the peoples in the Middle East have played an
active role in the restructuring of their region. Historical
writing and popular beliefs concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict
are re-examined in the light of this thesis.
The prospect of being a full member in the European Union, Turkey
faces deep processes of economical, political and social changes.
In order both to examine and to manage these changes it is of
fundamental importance to throw a closer view to Turkish politics
and economy. The first three chapters provide a detailed study
mainly on the political sphere and the transformation in domestic
politics to preparatory to European Union integration. The
remaining chapters deal with the analysis from the point of view of
political economy (e.g. management, tourism, industrialization and
foreign trade). The book has been structured in such a way that the
readers can also "pick and mix" chapters in response to their
interests and needs.

This book brings together studies of Americanization and American
imperialism to assess how far the twentieth century can be seen as
the "American Century." The collection comprises new contributions
exploring the "geographic dialogues" that arise as the result of
the projection of American power and culture in the world. The book
provides a critical evaluation of the extent of the diffusion and
adoption of the "American way of life" and the very concept of
"America" itself.
The contributors focus on the effects of the projection of
American society from the perspective of the "receivers," both as
beneficiaries and as victims. The sections examine three main forms
of American power: economic, political and cultural. Topics covered
include the role of US corporations; financial power; overseas
service investments; American promotion of democracy; the Cold War
and the Third World; Hollywood and the American dream; global
Disney; the globalization of media; and the influence of American
music. The book concludes by looking forward to ask if we are
entering a second American century.

The emergence of large regions within Russia as centres of gravity for political and international power, and the changing relationship between these emerging regions and the centre are critically important factors currently at work within Russia. Resource interdependence has driven economic integration in the
Asia-Pacific. Through trade and investment ties, Northeast Asian
steel industries have developed global production networks with
mining industries on the Pacific Rim for the supply of steelmaking
raw materials. But by spanning multiple national spaces, these
production networks unite many national economies while belonging
exclusively to none. Who, therefore, is in control? Jeffrey D.
Wilson examines how states and firms coordinate their activities to
govern global production in the Asia-Pacific steel industry.

This book provides research and analysis on an understudied topic:
the LBGTQ+ community as victims and offenders. Most publications
focus on LBGTQ+ history and the community's movement towards
equality and acceptance in society and in law. A focus on how the
criminal justice system victimizes and marginalizes LBGTQ+ persons
is needed. Consequently, this work includes chapters on members of
the LBGTQ+ community who work in the criminal justice system,
forced sexual orientation efforts, transgender legal concerns,
LBGTQ+ persons who are arrested and imprisoned, and online dating
hate crimes. International scholars provide their individual
stories about being gay, bisexual or lesbian and working as a
police or correctional officer. Other international contributors
explain their research on crime and how the law and criminal
justice community does not provide LBGTQ+ persons with protection
or support as offenders or victims. This book will of interest to
researchers and advanced students of Criminology, Sociology, Law,
and Gender Studies. It was originally published as a special issue
of the journal Women & Criminal Justice.
This book demonstrates how particular values and 'notions of leadership', which underpinned traditional Malay leadership, have played a crucial role in the political evolution of the modern Malaysian nation. The author discusses the nature of Malay 'notions of leadership', and considers this throughout the Malay world at the local as well as at the national level, and goes on to describe and analyse leadership from pre-independence leadership in the colonial period through the rule of Malaysia's four prime ministers. He draws on anthropology, psychology, and political and economic history to show how Malay leaders have kept within the established track of the Malay value system, responding in particular to the expectation of their people to provide a sense of national identity and unity against the complex background of the Malaysian 'mosaic', while addressing the needs of the wider multi-ethnic community.
The partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947 was a defining
moment which has powerfully shaped the destinies of people in the
South Asian region. The birth of nation-states of India and
Pakistan produced reverberations which were both immediate and
long-term. This book focuses on the aftermath of partition and
takes stock of its long term consequences. Earlier works on
partition have portrayed it as a tragic and unintended consequence
of decolonisation, or subordinated it to larger dramas surrounding
the advent of independence. This book sees partition in its own
terms. It argues that it was not a single event, but a trigger of
processes which have left a deep imprint on state and society in
the region. Where other books have looked only at the causes of
partition, this book broadens the horizon by looking at its
effects. It is constructed around two key motifs, the dislocations
and disruptions as well as the long-term impact of partition on
peoples, places and institutions. This book draws upon new
theoretical insights and fresh bodies of data to historically
reappraise partition in the light of its long aftermath. It uses a
comparative approach by viewing South Asia in its to
