This path-breaking book uncovers the important, under-appreciated role of armed opposition groups turned political parties in shaping long-term patterns of politics after war. Based on an empirically grounded and theoretically informed retrospective on nearly thirty years of post-conflict democratic state-building efforts, it examines whether this practice has contributed to peace and finds that engaging post-rebel parties in electoral politics has proven to be a viable long-term strategy for bringing political stability, that disparate post-rebel parties from different political contexts invest heavily in electoral politics and that few post-rebel parties actively seek return to civil conflict as a solution after becoming a political party. Focused on two networks, Al-Jazeera and BBC Arabic, this study provides an in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis of different media strategies employed in the coverage of Covid-19. The author draws primarily from Critical Discourse Analysis, supplemented by an analysis of corpora from both Al-Jazeera and BBC, comprising news items, documentaries and discussion shows. An array of key topics are examined for their language and lexis, including political leaders and governments, the public and victims of Covid-19. The two networks' coverage of these topics are closely compared and contrasted, with both employing strategies of exemplification, nominalisation, functionalisation, naming and labelling. The analysis shows that the two networks have displayed a solidarity discourse throughout the pandemic, emphasising the need to fight the disease. In addition, the networks have consistently stressed the gravity of the pandemic, urging adherence to local regulations. It is ultimately argued that examining the coverage of Covid-19 from a dialectical perspective will enable us to unravel the social, cultural, political, and ideological motives behind the production of pandemic media discourse. He, Breen and Allison-Reumann combine qualitative and quantitative research to compare the successes and failures of attempts at Federalism in Asian countries. Federalism is an increasingly common approach to improving governance and resolving ethnic conflict in Asia. However, Asian federalism faces three thorny problems. First, the ethnic federalism paradigm dominates political and intellectual life, rendering political compromise difficult and creating an obstacle to establishing or improving federalism in Asia. Second, religious fundamentalism and secular refusal to accommodate religious demands pose an existential threat to federal politics. Third, a majoritarian democracy is itself a threat to federalism in Asia, and the peace and stability that it is meant to underpin. Through a truly comparative analysis, He, Breen and Allison-Reumann investigate the potential for a hybrid-ethnic approach, religious moderation and deliberative democracy to overcome these challenges. They analyse cases from across Asia – both successes and failures. This book is an attempt to present the inside story of the Telangana movement that developed due to historical reasons. The movement, in this work, has brought forward the Telangana lower class's response to the established cultural hegemony of the Andhra linguistic elite and affluent agrarian communities who, in their perception, monopolized the political power and economic resources. The movement voices the democratic yearnings of service castes, artisans, Dalits and nomads who through their instant association with the movement expressed aspirations for their due share in political power and administrative structure. The leadership that has come from the regional elite has, however, articulated only the reasons of 'self-respect and regional autonomy'. This work brings out the two-fold character in the movement. It also gives insights into the possible need of remaking states in India in the interest of the inclusion of these social groups in political structures so that democracy might further percolate downwards. Following the end of the Second World War, the main mission of the British Army in Palestine was to contain Jewish attacks and illegal immigration while the fate of the Mandate was being decided. This book is a record of the British Army during the final year of the Mandate and its impact on the course and outcome of the 1948 War. With the decision of the UN General Assembly on 29th November 1947 to partition Palestine and the anticipated eruption of inter-communal violence, the Army was made responsible for the maintenance of law and order throughout Palestine until the termination of the Mandate on 15th May 1948. These crucial months are considered from the point of view of the ranks of the British Army, soldiers and field commanders rather than that of generals and statesmen. It makes extensive use of memoirs, contemporary writing and private diaries, as well as archival material and regimental journals. Subjects such as regimental culture and leisure activities are explored in addition to operations and peace-keeping. The book offers an important contribution to the history of the Middle East, and readers interested in political science, the history of the British Army, military history, Palestine and Israel will find in this book a new and innovative view of the 1948 War.

Analysing materials from literature and film, this book considers the fates of women who did not or could not buy into the Japanese imperial ideology of "good wives, wise mothers" in support of male empire-building. Although many feminist critics have articulated women's active roles as dutiful collaborators for the Japanese empire, male-dominated narratives of empire-building have been largely supported and rectified. In contrast, the roles of marginalized women, such as sex workers, women entertainers, hostesses, and hibakusha have rarely been analyzed. This book addresses this intellectual lacuna by closely examining memories, (semi-)autobiographical stories, and newspaper articles, grounded or inspired by lived experiences not only in Japan, but also in Shanghai, Manchukuo, colonial Korea, and the Pacific. Chapters further explore the voices of diasporic Korean women (Zainichi Korean woman born in Japan, as well as Korean American woman born in Korea) whose lives were impacted, intervening ethnocentric narratives that were at the heart of the Japanese empire. An appendix presents the first English translation of a memorable statement on comfort women by former Japanese propaganda actress, Ri Koran / Yamaguchi Yoshiko. Moving beyond Western philosophical and political frameworks, this text engages with and centers Arab-Islamic ontologies, pupil voice, and gender to explore citizen identity formation and belonging among domestic students and Syrian refugees in Jordan. Focusing on the role of double-shift schools, educational policy and provision, the volume interrogates how citizenship and youth identity is rooted, upheld, and altered over time. Karim examines the changes and continuity of Indonesia’s foreign policy in the post-authoritarian era, under presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo. Indonesia conceptualised and aimed to adopt four principle roles after 2004 – being a voice for developing countries; being a regional leader; being an advocate for democratic and human rights; and being a bridge-builder. These roles, however, were by no means stable, and were constantly being negotiated and contested. Karim analyses the contested nature of Indonesian foreign policy, and the limits this places on consistency in enacting these roles. He highlights two drivers for such limitations – conflicting role conceptions, and state fragmentation. He develops this argument based on four case studies of Indonesia’s engagement in human rights governance and trade governance at both regional and global levels.
