Healthy at Work - Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Markus Wiencke, Mirella Cacace, Sebastian Fischer Healthy at Work - Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Markus Wiencke, Mirella Cacace, Sebastian Fischer
R3,198 Discovery Miles 31 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book aims at exploring the link between corporate and organizational culture, public and private policies, leadership and managerial skills or attitudes, and the successful implementation of work-related healthcare in Europe. Therefore it brings together a wide range of empirical and theoretical contributions from occupational health, management, psychology, medicine, economics, and (organizational) sociology to address the question of how to sustainably promote occupational health. Such important questions are explored as: What aspects of a corporate culture can be associated with health issues? How does leadership style affect the health of employees? How are health-related decisions in the workplace affected by the political environment? To what extent are interventions influenced by corporate culture, leadership and public policy? How can we make such interventions sustainable?

Labor in an Islamic Setting - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Necmettin Kizilkaya, Toseef Azid Labor in an Islamic Setting - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Necmettin Kizilkaya, Toseef Azid
R4,487 Discovery Miles 44 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Islamic labor market rests on the principles of the free market exchange of Islamic economics. Regrettably, the latter has failed to keep pace with the rapidly growing academic and professional developments of the former. Much of the published work within Islamic economics is idealistic if not radically ideological with little relevance to the Islamic labor market, leaving students of Islamic economics without a coherent body of economic theory to understand the practical objectives of Shariah that gives a sense of direction to the developments in this field. Drawing upon received sources of goals of Shariah, the authors present an independent academic work which: Emphasizes the common conceptual grounds of labor market behavior shared by the objectives of Shariah approach as well as the conventional approach to economics. Adopts standard tools of contemporary economics to explain the industrial relations. Extends the conventional scope of the labor market and forces of the labor market under the umbrella of Shariah. Enables readers and practitioners of Islamic economics to make economic sense of Shariah compliance and human resource development. Explains how the economics of Shariah is liable to offer moral guidance and a sense of direction to regulators and practitioners of the Islamic labor market. Labor in an Islamic Setting will be of interest to postgraduate students, academics, middle and senior management in both the western and the Islamic business communities, researchers and policy makers.

Human Capital and Assets in the Networked World (Hardcover): Meir Russ Human Capital and Assets in the Networked World (Hardcover)
Meir Russ
R3,079 Discovery Miles 30 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The application of continuously changing ubiquitous computing and network technologies and the ensuing new networked society is challenging the traditional perspectives of what is human and social capital. Human Capital and Assets in the Networked World extends the discussion of the interaction between multiple types of capital among different actors over different time frames, assuming that the nature of such interaction is dynamically modified resulting from the adaptation by individuals and organizations of the new technologies. Such interaction of a multilevel system is enabled for example by the pervasive mobile technologies and the internet of things and 'blockchain' technologies. Featuring contributions from leading scholars in the field, the book discusses human capital and human assets from a connectionist perspective, focusing on the growing infusion of the traditional human capital and social and knowledge-based systems. It goes beyond the current literature by providing a platform for a broad scope of discussion regarding human capital and assets, and more importantly, by encouraging a multidisciplinary fusion between diverse academic disciplines. Multi-level and multi-discipline chapters are represented, as well as when appropriate, plurality of empirical methods from diverse disciplines that are enhancing the opportunity for the building of a holistic theory of human capital and assets in the new networked society. The book also broadens the human capital praxis framework introduced and used by Russ, into the new networked society focusing on definitions, management, value creation, valuation and reporting of human capital and assets. Human Capital and Assets in the Networked World provides researchers and students in all disciplines of management with a wide-ranging reference and will provide new insights of developing and managing talent in the the new networked economy that could be applied by advanced practitioners to augment company success.

Construction Workers, U.S.A. (Hardcover, New): Herbert Applebaum Construction Workers, U.S.A. (Hardcover, New)
Herbert Applebaum
R2,539 Discovery Miles 25 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A lively, personalized account incorporating objective analysis and solid information accumulated over 42 years, this book presents a graphic picture of the construction industry from an insider's point of view. The volume focuses on the culture of construction workers, the management style of contractors, and the structural and organizational nature of the industry. It considers such unique features of construction as its craft-oriented technology, decentralized decision-making by workers on the job site, and non-bureaucratic methods of field supervision. Using the research of others, government publications, and his own intimate experience in the industry, the author provides an insightful view of a unique industry in modern America.

The book opens with an overview of the industry, illustrating how construction is organized, the craft breakdown, and the cultural values of the crafts. It then considers such topics as workers' job satisfaction, craft organization of the work, and the dangerous nature of construction. Separate chapters are devoted to women construction workers, a recent phenomenon in the industry, and to minorities and the role of affirmative action. In conclusion, the book argues that construction is significant both as a major industry and as a model for organizing work to produce worker satisfaction.

Learning and Technological Change (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Ross Thomson Learning and Technological Change (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Ross Thomson
R4,027 Discovery Miles 40 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume features 15 contributors who argue that technical change can fruitfully be interpreted as an institutionally-structured learning process. These essays show that the analysis of knowledge-generating institutions - including firms, industries, patenting systems and occupations - provides insights into the pace, direction and persistence of technological change. The authors use these insights to both reshape economic theory, and reinterpret the economic development of Britain, the United States, Germany and Japan. Other titles by Ross Thomson includes "The Path to Mechanized Shoe Production in the United States", "Business and Economic History", " The Journal of Economic History", "The New Palgrave", "Social Concept" and "Technology and Culture".

Global Restructuring and the Power of Labour (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Bill Dunn Global Restructuring and the Power of Labour (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Bill Dunn
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Bill Dunn considers and contests accounts of globalization and post-Fordism that see structural economic change in the late Twentieth-century as having fundamentally worsened the conditions and weakened the potential of labour. Including a comparative survey of restructuring in four major industries; automobiles, construction, microelectronics and finance, the book suggests the timing of change and its complex and contradictory nature undermine structural explanations of labour's situation. It redirects attention towards labour's political defeats and own institutional shortcomings.

Low Pay and Earnings Mobility in Europe (Hardcover): Rita Asplund, Peter Sloane, Ioannis Theodossiou Low Pay and Earnings Mobility in Europe (Hardcover)
Rita Asplund, Peter Sloane, Ioannis Theodossiou
R4,089 Discovery Miles 40 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Is it possible for low-paid workers to obtain higher-paid jobs through upward mobility over time within the earnings distribution? Based on new empirical evidence from a number of European countries, the book focuses on earnings mobility, an issue that is of increasing concern to policymakers and governments throughout the world. The widening earnings dispersion which is developing in European labour markets has had the inevitable consequence of worsening the position of the poorer members of society. This book identifies those individual characteristics which affect upward mobility either by increasing or decreasing the probability of individual workers improving their chances of earning higher wages. The authors, including some of the leading labour economists in Europe, offer a comprehensive European perspective covering a total of thirteen countries. They shed new light on the way in which labour market incentives and institutions affect both the incidence and duration of low-paid employment. This book will be of interest to both academics with an interest in labour economics and policy makers throughout Europe.

Visual Impairment and Work - Experiences of Visually Impaired People (Hardcover): Sally French Visual Impairment and Work - Experiences of Visually Impaired People (Hardcover)
Sally French
R4,916 Discovery Miles 49 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book traces the development of paid work for visually impaired people in the UK from the 18th century to the present day. It gives a voice to visually impaired people to talk about their working lives and documents the history of employment from their experience, an approach which is severely lacking in the current literature about visual impairment and employment. By analysing fifty in-depth face-to-face interviews with visually impaired people talking about their working lives (featuring those who have worked in traditional jobs such as telephony, physiotherapy and piano tuning, to those who have pursued more unusual occupations and professions), and grouping them according to occupation and framed by documentary, historical research, these stories can be situated in their broader political, economic, ideological and cultural contexts. The themes that emerge will help to inform present day policy and practice within a context of high unemployment amongst visually impaired people of working age. It is part of a growing literature which gives voice to disabled people about their own lives and which adds to the growing academic discipline of disability studies and the empowerment of disabled people.

Reporting on Income Distribution and Poverty - Perspectives from a German and a European Point of View (Hardcover, 2003 ed.):... Reporting on Income Distribution and Poverty - Perspectives from a German and a European Point of View (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Richard Hauser, Irene Becker
R2,759 Discovery Miles 27 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The intention of this book is threefold: presenting and advancing German reporting on income distribution and poverty, looking at experiences with advanced reporting schemes in two other EU countries, and discussing concepts for comparable social monitoring in the European Union. The first group of papers elaborates on recent findings for Germany (trends in the personal distribution of income and income poverty, multidimensional approaches to measure poverty and extreme poverty, redistribution). Of special interest is a critical methodological review of the two main German databases for distribution analyses, taking the suggestions of the Canberra Group as a reference. The second group of contributions reviews research on income distribution and poverty in Great Britain and Ireland. The last paper discusses concepts of comparable indicators for poverty and social exclusion in the EU.

Working Part-Time - Risks and Opportunities (Hardcover, New): Barbara Warme, Katherina L.P. Lundy, Larry A. Lundy Working Part-Time - Risks and Opportunities (Hardcover, New)
Barbara Warme, Katherina L.P. Lundy, Larry A. Lundy
R2,553 Discovery Miles 25 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The hiring of part-time and temporary workers has historically been a mechanism for adjusting imbalances between supply and demand in the labor market. The use of such workers has increased dramatically as technological changes have put a premium on flexibility, and as fringe benefits have come to constitute an increasing percentage of labor costs. Flexibility is sought not only by organizations, but also by individuals: students, women with children, disabled persons, and retirees all benefit by part-time opportunities. Part-Time Work discusses these opportunities, and the risk involved in employment which is sometimes underpaid and devalued, and from which movement to full-time positions is difficult.

This volume represents the work of a cross-section of specialists in labor economics, industrial relations specialists, and social scientists who are engaged in research on the transformation of work in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. Chapters focus on the structural aspects of part-time work, conditions under which such work is performed, constraints imposed on employers by official agencies, and expectations and attitudes of part-time workers rooted in a particular society. Part-Time Work will prove particularly useful to sociologists, labor specialists, and relevant government agencies, organizations, and unions.

Contingent Valuation, Transport Safety and the Value of Life (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): Nathalie G. Schwab Christe, Nils C. Soguel Contingent Valuation, Transport Safety and the Value of Life (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Nathalie G. Schwab Christe, Nils C. Soguel
R4,117 Discovery Miles 41 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Over the past two decades, economic theory has extended its field of application to non-market goods such as environmental resources and health. Although it is impossible to assign a price to these goods on the basis of market mechanisms alone, the fact that they have no price does not mean that they have no value. One technique in which economists have shown a marked interest is the contingent valuation method (CVM), which has mainly been used to assign a monetary value to environmental goods. It was first applied to natural resources used for recreational purposes. CVM has been applied to health only recently, so that studies in this field are relatively more scarce than those dealing with the environment, although several valuation methodology surveys are available. There has hitherto been no book which has drawn together and analyzed recent contingent valuations in the field of transport accidents. Contingent Valuation, Transport Safety and the Value of Life provides an overview of the experiments conducted in Europe (Denmark, France, the U.K., Sweden and Switzerland). While a number of contributions are critical, others show how the estimates obtained in the area of road transport can be used to assess the adverse health effects of other causes, such as public transport accidents or air pollution.

R4,634 Discovery Miles 46 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It evaluates the economic theory, the formation of the figure of the entrepreneur, as well as the structure of the companies. This exploration of the businessmen in Spain over several centuries is something that has not been done until now. Joining the great Spanish historiographical debate about the existence or not of entrepreneurship, the book brings together research in very different historical contexts and junctures. It presents a selection of cases of companies and entrepreneurs from Spain, from different sectors, regions and periods, from boom to crisis, from the wine businessman to the railway sector, from private banking to the pioneers of the Spanish travel agency business. It will be of interest to academics and students in economic history, business and management history, as well as researchers in entrepreneurship & small business management.

Blood and Oranges - Immigrant Labor and European Markets in Rural Greece (Paperback): Christopher Lawrence Blood and Oranges - Immigrant Labor and European Markets in Rural Greece (Paperback)
Christopher Lawrence
R835 Discovery Miles 8 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"This is a book well worth reading... it] offers a comprehensive background to the studied society and the complex social relationships at all levels that dominate this rural Greek microcosm. This is an excellent book, of interest to those studying globalization and the integration of markets but also those interested on contemporary Greek society and its entanglements." . Labour History Review

"Lawrence's ethnography is a valuable and intriguing contribution not only to the ethnography of Greece but to the anthropology of globalization and politics. The detailed and multi level analysis of social, political and economic transformations is both critical and well placed... It] reminds anthropology of the necessity of a critical, detailed and encompassing political analysis of the interactions and articulations between the contradictory processes, discourses and practices between people and socio-economic systems, between people and the formations and transformations of power." . Durham Anthropology Journal

"Each chapter of Blood and Oranges is densely packed with argumentation that weaves together existing literature with the political economic facts on the ground. The treatment is a learned one, rich and erudite in its treatment of the circum-stances in Argolida, and always embedding those circum-stances within a broader set of forces and connections." . American Ethnologist

A compelling account of the intersection of globalization and neo-racism in a rural Greek community, this book describes the contradictory political and economic development of the Greek countryside since its incorporation into the European Union, where increased prosperity and social liberalization have been accompanied by the creation of a vulnerable and marginalized class of immigrant laborers. The author analyzes the paradoxical resurgence of ethnic nationalism and neo-racism that has grown in the wake of European unification and addresses key issues of racism, neoliberalism and nationalism in contemporary anthropology."

The Experience of Unemployment (Hardcover): A. Waton, S. Allen, K. Purcell, S. Wood The Experience of Unemployment (Hardcover)
A. Waton, S. Allen, K. Purcell, S. Wood
R2,649 Discovery Miles 26 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Increasingly high unemployment has brought with it a multitude of consequences affecting those without jobs and, beyond them, their families, friends and communities. This book reports findings from original research. It explores, often in the words of the unemployed and others involved, what life without a job is like. It challenges many widely held beliefs about the unemployed - that they are workshy, price themselves out of jobs or earn money illegally on the side - and explores where such misconceptions come from. It reveals the inherent contradictions involved in trying to search for work whilst coping with the experience of unemployment.

The Economic Effects of Trade Unions in Japan (Hardcover): T. Tachibanaki, T. Noda The Economic Effects of Trade Unions in Japan (Hardcover)
T. Tachibanaki, T. Noda
R2,648 Discovery Miles 26 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is an attempt to examine whether trade unions in Japan contributed to raising wages, productivity and firm's performance. In the western world trade unions are often regarded as organizations which prevent firms from performing well. The Japanese case may be different from Europe and North America. The book investigates who in Japan joins trade unions and asks whether there is any difference in the satisfaction level of employees, the wage level, and labour turnover rates between union members and non-union members.

Family, Household And Work (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): Klaus F. Zimmermann, Michael V ogler Family, Household And Work (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
Klaus F. Zimmermann, Michael V ogler
R2,893 Discovery Miles 28 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

During the last decades the appearance of a family has changed substantially. Not long ago a typical family consisted of an employed man and a home-managing woman living together for their whole life times, and having one or more children, which primarily were raised by the wife.  Today differing living models are much more common than before. House husbands, late motherhood, and a delayed work entry of the children are some of the related phenomena, which at the same time are reasons for and consequences of the changed view on the favorite family. Not surprisingly, this change has provoked much scientific interest. In this book we present a collection of recent economic research work on the resources management and development of families and households respectively. Assorting three general topics, we focus on the time allocation within the household, the family structure and development, and the transition to work of young adults.

Employment Policy in Transition - The Lessons of German Integration for the Labor Market (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Regina T.... Employment Policy in Transition - The Lessons of German Integration for the Labor Market (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Regina T. Riphahn, Dennis J. Snower, Klaus F. Zimmermann
R2,683 Discovery Miles 26 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A historically unique experiment is about to enter its second decade - German unification. Early hopes for a rapid and smooth economic transformation soon turned out to be overly optimistic. Despite massive financial transfers, the political promise of a "blooming landscape" remains a vision. Actual developments have left deep scars on the labor market, and the effects will be felt for decades to come. Was this outcome to be expected, perhaps even inevitable? What went wrong, and what were the available options? Or is the current state of Eastern German labor market in fact better than is commonly assumed?
