New Cohesion Policy of the European Union in Poland - How It Will Influence the Investment Attractiveness of Regions in... New Cohesion Policy of the European Union in Poland - How It Will Influence the Investment Attractiveness of Regions in 2014-2020 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Adam A. Ambroziak
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The main objective of the book is to identify and evaluate the major changes in the Cohesion Policy of the European Union and their effects on Polish regions for the period of 2014 - 2020. The reader will learn how these changes result from the successful agreement on the Multiannual Financial Framework and implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy. Based on these aspects, the authors describe the main change in the Cohesion Policy of the EU, which is the renewed focus on competitiveness and skills to compete within the EU internal and the global market. The territorial approach taken by the EU with respect to entrepreneurial competitiveness is directly linked to the location attractiveness of regions. The authors argue that the new paradigm of the EU' s Cohesion Policy will strengthen the focus on location attractiveness. To illustrate this case, they analyze Poland as one of the most appropriate and relevant Member States to evaluate the new rules underlying EU policies for 2014 - 2020, as Poland is the largest net-beneficiary of the EU budget.

Self-Regulation and Human Progress - How Society Gains When We Govern Less (Hardcover): Evan Osborne Self-Regulation and Human Progress - How Society Gains When We Govern Less (Hardcover)
Evan Osborne
R2,069 Discovery Miles 20 690 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Most of us are familiar with free-market competition: the idea that society and the economy benefit when people are left to self-regulate, testing new ideas in pursuit of profit. Less known is the fact that this theory arose after arguments for the scientific method and freedom of speech had gone mainstream-and that all three share a common basis. Proponents of self-regulation in the realm of free speech have argued that unhindered public expression causes true ideas to gain strength through scrutiny. Similarly, scientific inquiry has been regarded as a self-correcting system, one in which competing hypotheses are verified by multiple independent researchers. It was long thought that society was better left to organize itself through free markets as opposed to political institutions. But, over the twentieth century, we became less confident in the notion of a self-regulating socioeconomy. Evan Osborne traces the rise and fall of this once-popular concept. He argues that-as society becomes more complex-self-regulation becomes more efficient and can once again serve our economy well.

R2,640 Discovery Miles 26 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a collection of original essays grouped into four parts under the headings "Greece and European integration," "Issues in the Methodology of Economics," "Institutions and the Free Market Economy," and "Insights for Today from Ancient Greece." The essays appeal to both researchers in the corresponding fields of knowledge and also to policy makers who are looking for ideas and approaches to confront present day challenges. In particular, given the present state of turmoil in the European Union, the international economy, and democracies in general, most of the essays offer new insights for economic and social policies.

The Cooperative Business Movement, 1950 to the Present (Paperback): Patrizia Battilani, Harm G Schroeter The Cooperative Business Movement, 1950 to the Present (Paperback)
Patrizia Battilani, Harm G Schroeter
R978 Discovery Miles 9 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The United Nations declared 2012 the year of cooperatives, emphasizing that there is an alternative to privately owned firms. While greed and mismanagement have caused world financial and economic crises, co-ops offer another type of business for economic activities that is less exposed to aggressive capitalism. This book provides a problem-oriented overview of the development of cooperatives over the last fifty years. The global study addresses the major challenges cooperatives face, such as the organizational innovations introduced to acquire necessary risk-capital and implement growth-related strategies, the wave of demutualization in developed nations and their ability to construct an original consumer politics. The contributors to this volume discuss the successes and failures of the cooperatives and ask whether they are an outdated model of enterprise. They document a wave of foundations of new co-ops, new forms of collaboration between them and a growing trend toward globalization.

State Capitalism, Institutional Adaptation, and the Chinese Miracle (Hardcover): Barry Naughton, Kellee S. Tsai State Capitalism, Institutional Adaptation, and the Chinese Miracle (Hardcover)
Barry Naughton, Kellee S. Tsai
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

China's stunning growth rates have corresponded with the rise of 'state capitalism'. Since the mid-2000s, China's political economy has stabilized around a model where most sectors are marketized and increasingly integrated with the global economy; yet strategic industries remain firmly in the grasp of an elite empire of state-owned enterprises. What are the implications of state capitalism for industrial competitiveness, corporate governance, government-business relations, and domestic welfare? How does China's model of state capitalism compare with other examples of state-directed development in late industrializing countries? As China enters a phase of more modest growth, it is especially timely to understand how its institutions have adapted to new challenges and party-state priorities. In this volume, leading scholars of China's economy, politics, history, and society explore these compelling issues.

The Politics of Advanced Capitalism (Hardcover): Pablo Beramendi, Silja Hausermann, Herbert Kitschelt, Hanspeter Kriesi The Politics of Advanced Capitalism (Hardcover)

This book serves as a sequel to two distinguished volumes on capitalism: Continuity and Change in Contemporary Capitalism (Cambridge, 1999) and Order and Conflict in Contemporary Capitalism (1985). Both volumes took stock of major economic challenges advanced industrial democracies faced, as well as the ways political and economic elites dealt with them. However, during the last decades, the structural environment of advanced capitalist democracies has undergone profound changes: sweeping deindustrialization, tertiarization of the employment structure, and demographic developments. This book provides a synthetic view, allowing the reader to grasp the nature of these structural transformations and their consequences in terms of the politics of change, policy outputs, and outcomes. In contrast to functionalist and structuralist approaches, the book advocates and contributes to a 'return of electoral and coalitional politics' to political economy research.

Between Globalization and Integration - The Europeanization of Romania (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Sebastian Vaduva Between Globalization and Integration - The Europeanization of Romania (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Sebastian Vaduva
R1,677 Discovery Miles 16 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume focuses on the integration and globalization of Romania, a prominent emerging market in South-Eastern Europe and one of the major players in the securitization of the Black Sea and the Eastern European border, as both a part of NATO since 2004 and a fully integrated EU Member State since 2007. It will examine the challenges the country has faced in its progression from totalitarianism to democracy through several waves of reform intended to update and streamline its political and economic processes for success in the free-market capitalist arena. Having learned the hard way about some of the key aspects of public administration, Romania has learned a place for itself among the diverse global players of Europe and beyond. The first section reviews current perspectives on globalization and its impact in the late 20th century. It has "flattened" the Earth, generating better communication and exchanges than ever before, but also gathering a fair amount of criticisms from commentators seeing it as little else than neo-colonialism. Cooperative-administrative strategies are being suggested instead, in order for new public administration patterns to smoothly run in coordination with the globalized world. In the second section, the European Union is described as a complex multi-level socio-political entity, itself historically in turmoil over its own style of rule - e.g. hierarchy vs. coordination, integration vs. centralization, etc. - or even its own existence, as the European dream seemed to be losing steam with the general population of Europe several times in the previous century. Powers and responsibilities of the European institutions and agencies are also discussed. Thirdly, the recent history of Romania is approached from the Europeanization context, starting from its post-1989 days of confusion and of attempting to jumpstart democracy. Eventually, it has to undergo a series of reforms and internalize some principles fundamental to the EU in order for the much-awaited accession to occur and its multiple effects to start taking place. A country with a rich cultural heritage and straddling multiple socio-political axes, Romania has plenty more to offer in the new geostrategic, security and development contexts of the 21st-century Europe. As such, this volume provides inspiration for further research and practical application opportunities on topics of local, European and global significance.

The Exchange Order - Property and Liability as an Economic System (Hardcover): Richard Adelstein The Exchange Order - Property and Liability as an Economic System (Hardcover)
Richard Adelstein
R2,771 Discovery Miles 27 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are three basic institutional systems for governing the exchange of property. One is consensual: the exchange of property rights in ordinary markets. The other two, however, are nonconsensual: the involuntary exchange of entitlements in either civil or criminal liability cases. In The Exchange Order, Richard Adelstein argues that while markets, torts, and criminal justice are ostensibly different constellations of institutions, organizations and individuals, they are remarkably alike. Each governs a particular kind of exchange through a distinctive set of institutions, rules and procedures. They have all evolved over many centuries from the same root, a deep-seated human propensity to communicate with others through trade, to exchange goods for goods and costs for costs as a means of reconciling opposing interests and increasing personal welfare. They perform the same social function, facilitating individually efficient exchanges of rights and compensatory prices, in very different exchange environments that demand very different institutional responses to the problem all three are in place to solve: identifying efficient transfers and seeing that they are completed. The Exchange Order provides a sweeping historical, comparative, and philosophical analysis of how rights and objects, goods and harms, are exchanged in these apparently very different realms. What unites them is a core norm: take only what you can pay for, and pay for everything you take. In markets free exchange is governed by prices and the willingness to sell or buy. Tort and criminal law apply when consensual exchange is violated. The violation is the non-consensual seizure of entitlements and the payment is a liability price on the taker that compensates the victim for the costs imposed by the taking. Tit for tat, an eye for an eye, is the principle of exchange that unites markets, tort and crime.

The Segmentation of Europe - Convergence or Divergence between Core and Periphery? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Mark Baimbridge,... The Segmentation of Europe - Convergence or Divergence between Core and Periphery? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Mark Baimbridge, Ioannis Litsios, Karen Jackson, Uih Ran Lee
R3,143 Discovery Miles 31 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores economic developments across Europe in relation to its apparent segmentation, as disparities widen between core and periphery countries. In contrast to previous literature, the scope of analysis is extended to Europe as a continent rather than confining it solely to the European Union, thereby providing the reader with greater insight into the core/periphery nexus. The authors commence with a critical appraisal of economic thinking in relation to regional trade agreements and monetary integration. In relation to a number of EU economies, the book addresses issues of a liquidity trap, deflation, and twin deficits, together with the interconnection between exchange rates and current account balances. Importantly, they extend the discussion of segmentation through a series of focused case studies on Russia, Brexit and emergence of the mega-regionals.

Government versus Markets - The Changing Economic Role of the State (Paperback): Vito Tanzi Government versus Markets - The Changing Economic Role of the State (Paperback)
Vito Tanzi
R999 Discovery Miles 9 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Vito Tanzi offers a truly comprehensive treatment of the economic role of the state in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries from a historical and world perspective. The book addresses the fundamental question of what governments should do, or have attempted to do, in economic activities in past and recent periods. It also speculates on what they are likely or may be forced to do in future years. The investigation assembles a large set of statistical information that should prove useful to policy-makers and scholars in the perennial discussion of government's optimal economic roles. It will become an essential reference work on the analytical borders between the market and the state, and on what a reasonable 'exit strategy' from the current fiscal crises should be.

Agricultural Transition in China - Domestic and International Perspectives on Technology and Institutional Change (Hardcover,... Agricultural Transition in China - Domestic and International Perspectives on Technology and Institutional Change (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Jun Du
R3,340 Discovery Miles 33 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book extends current research on the political economy of modern China, with particular regard to agricultural development and its role in economic transition. It uses Neoclassical principles to re-interpret agricultural growth and technological change under complex market institutions with empirical studies on China and selected East Asian economies. The text also questions how technological advances in China contribute to the Great Divergence debate. Through a comparative analysis of agricultural technical changes in the planting of rice paddies in Japan, Taiwan and China, Du finds that different market institutions and structures have given rise to considerable diversity of agricultural change between different economies in terms of the nature, timing and duration of technological transition. Such diversification has, in turn, affected the trajectories of agricultural and wider economic growth. Here, Du reflects on the nature of contemporary Chinese economic development and extends observations on agricultural transition to the entirety of Asia, finding that the nature, timing, and time-span of agriculture technology transitions have varied considerably across different economies.

The Governance of European Public Goods - Towards a Republican Paradigm of European Integration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017):... The Governance of European Public Goods - Towards a Republican Paradigm of European Integration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Stefan Collignon
R3,860 R3,330 Discovery Miles 33 300 Save R530 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited volume proposes an innovative approach to European Integration by combining economics and political theory in its study of public goods. The contributors review such elements as a neo-medieval governance, the merits of a new European Republic, and, alongside Europe, include South East Asia in its discussions. By addressing different issues within the overarching approach of public goods and the republican paradigm of governance, Collignon introduces an important new perspective.

The Euro and International Financial Stability (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Efthymios G. Tsionas The Euro and International Financial Stability (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Efthymios G. Tsionas
R3,451 Discovery Miles 34 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As a result of the financial crisis, the weaknesses of the Eurozone, including the public debt crisis, materialized in severe depressions in certain of its country members. In this monograph, the author analyzes structural weaknesses of the Eurozone and argues that they can be traced to (i) institutional differences, (ii) differences in the economic structures, (iii) the fundamental inability of European Bureaucracy to deal with crises, and (iv) the extreme rigidity of markets which prevents a general equilibrium in product and credit markets. He concludes that whether the Eurozone is sustainable, depends on future monetary and credit policies, and discusses the implications of reforming it in the best interest of the international banking and financial system. The recent policies of the ECB of “cheap” credit expansion are examined in detail. The approach of the work is along the lines of von Mises’ and Hayek’s Austrian tradition; additionally, substantive international empirical evidence supporting this Austrian approach is presented.

The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement (Paperback): William Cunningham The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement (Paperback)
William Cunningham
R870 Discovery Miles 8 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

William Cunningham (1849 1919) was a prominent British economist and economic historian. In this book, which was first published in 1905 as the second edition of a 1904 original, Cunningham presents a historical discussion of the free trade movement and its limitations in the light of contemporary economic developments. Profiles of Adam Smith and Richard Cobden are included, together with detailed notes, which are incorporated throughout. The text was based upon a series of lectures delivered at Cambridge University during the Michaelmas Term of 1903. It will be of value to anyone with an interest in economic history and perspectives on free trade."

The EU after Lisbon - Amending or Coping with the Existing Treaties? (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... The EU after Lisbon - Amending or Coping with the Existing Treaties? (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Lucia Serena Rossi, Federico Casolari
R3,494 Discovery Miles 34 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book contains a collection of high-quality academic and expert contributions dealing with the central question of whether the Lisbon Treaty needs further revision. Due to the difficulties European Union actors have encountered in implementing the Lisbon Treaty's reform and the inadequacies of the current legal framework brought to light by post-Lisbon practice, the volume focuses on possible innovations and functional approaches to improve the Union's response to the challenges confronting it. In doing so, the volume first takes a horizontal approach to the Treaty' revision and considers some constitutional features showing the interaction between the EU and its Member States (namely, the parameters of constitutional developments, the allocation of competences, the principles of solidarity and loyal cooperation). Then, the focus shifts to the question of fundamental rights within the EU's constitutional framework, one of the most relevant innovations of the Lisbon Treaty being the incorporation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights into the Union's primary law. The last part of the volume is devoted to another domain significantly reshaped by the Lisbon reform, namely, the Union's external dimension. ECJ Advocate General Paolo Mengozzi's conclusions highlight the common themes emerging from the various contributions, stressing the need for a more general supranational approach to the political crisis the Union is going through. The content of this book will be of great value to academics, students, judges, practitioners and all others interested in the legal discourse on the progressive development of the European Union legal order.

Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity (Hardcover): William I. Robinson Global Capitalism and the Crisis of Humanity (Hardcover)
William I. Robinson
R2,019 R1,710 Discovery Miles 17 100 Save R309 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This exciting new study provides an original and provocative expose of the crisis of global capitalism in its multiple dimensions - economic, political, social, ecological, military, and cultural. Building on his earlier works on globalization, William I. Robinson discusses the nature of the new global capitalism, the rise of a globalized production and financial system, a transnational capitalist class, and a transnational state and warns of the rise of a global police state to contain the explosive contradictions of a global capitalist system that is crisis-ridden and out of control. Robinson concludes with an exploration of how diverse social and political forces are responding to the crisis and alternative scenarios for the future.

Sampled-Data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Juan I Yuz, Graham C. Goodwin Sampled-Data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Juan I Yuz, Graham C. Goodwin
R3,451 Discovery Miles 34 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems" provides a fresh new look at a subject with which many researchers may think themselves familiar. Rather than emphasising the differences between sampled-data and continuous-time systems, the authors proceed from the premise that, with modern sampling rates being as high as they are, it is becoming more appropriate to emphasise connections and similarities. The text is driven by three motives:

.the ubiquity of computers in modern control and signal-processing equipment means that sampling of systems that really evolve continuously is unavoidable;

.although superficially straightforward, sampling can easily produce erroneous results when not treated properly; and

. the need for a thorough understanding of many aspects of sampling among researchers and engineers dealing with applications to which they are central.

The authors tackle many misconceptions which, although appearing reasonable at first sight, are in fact either partially or completely erroneous. They also deal with linear and nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic cases. The impact of the ideas presented on several standard problems in signals and systems is illustrated using a number of applications.

Academic researchers and graduate students in systems, control and signal processing will find the ideas presented in "Sampled-data Models for Linear and Nonlinear Systems" to be a useful manual for dealing with sampled-data systems, clearing away mistaken ideas and bringing the subject thoroughly up to date. Researchers in statistics and economics will also derive benefit from the reworking of ideas relating a model derived from data sampling to an original continuous system.

The Economy of Modern Malta - From the Nineteenth to the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Paul Caruana Galizia The Economy of Modern Malta - From the Nineteenth to the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Paul Caruana Galizia
R4,768 Discovery Miles 47 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides the first wide-ranging account of the Maltese economy in the modern era, from colonialism to European Union membership. It sets arguments about growth and development, and the impact and legacy of colonization, against detailed histories of agriculture, manufacturing and trade, and different economic policy regimes. It is based on volumes of newly collected archival evidence and the latest thinking in economic history. By extending coverage up to the present, the book explains how one of the world's smallest nation-states achieved lasting economic development, quintupling its per capita income level since 1970, when many other postcolonial and advanced economies stagnated.

Malgorzata Runiewicz-Wardyn
R3,292 Discovery Miles 32 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book provides conceptual and empirical insights into the complex relationship between knowledge flows and regional growth in the EU. The author critically scrutinizes and enhances the RIS (Regional Innovation System) approach, discussing innovation as a technological, institutional and evolutionary process. Moreover, she advances the ongoing discourse on the role of space and technological proximity in the process of innovation and technological externalities. The book closes with an investigation of the role of technological change and knowledge spillovers in the dynamic growth and "catching-up" of EU regions.

Economic Cycles in Emerging and Advanced Countries - Synchronization, International Spillovers and the Decoupling Hypothesis... Economic Cycles in Emerging and Advanced Countries - Synchronization, International Spillovers and the Decoupling Hypothesis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Antonio Pesce
R1,868 Discovery Miles 18 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contributes to the debate on the decoupling of emerging economies from the advanced economies with a new, empirical investigation approach. Taking counterfactual experiments performed using a time-varying panel VAR model, the author argues that over the last thirty years, emerging economies have become less vulnerable to shocks spreading from advanced economies. This resilience to external shocks has changed in a non-progressive manner over time, with phases of greater resilience followed by others of lower resilience and vice versa. This research outlines its wave-like path and presents new results that contribute to the discussion.

Masters of Illusion - American Leadership in the Media Age (Paperback): Steven Rosefielde, D. Quinn Mills Masters of Illusion - American Leadership in the Media Age (Paperback)
Steven Rosefielde, D. Quinn Mills
R1,237 Discovery Miles 12 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The United States will confront a series of fundamental challenges through the middle of the twenty-first century. Using a theory of economic systems to gauge present and future global conflicts, Steven Rosefielde and D. Quinn Mills see the challenges as posed sequentially by terrorism, Russia, China, and the European Union. In the cases of terrorism, Russia, and China, Western leaders appreciate aspects of these perils, but they are crafting unduly soft policies to deal with the challenges. The authors believe that 'globalists' notwithstanding, such views are myopic in an era where nuclear proliferation has invalidated the concept of mutually assured destruction. What America requires is a new security concept that the authors call 'strategic independence' to enable keeping the peace in dangerous times and foster new generations of leaders capable of acting sanely despite a current public culture addicted to wishful thinking.

Explaining Monetary and Financial Innovation - A Historical Analysis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Explaining Monetary and Financial Innovation - A Historical Analysis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Peter Bernholz, Roland Vaubel
R4,958 Discovery Miles 49 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book discusses theories of monetary and financial innovation and applies them to key monetary and financial innovations in history – starting with the use of silver bars in Mesopotamia and ending with the emergence of the Eurodollar market in London. The key monetary innovations are coinage (Asia minor, China, India), the payment of interest on loans, the bill of exchange and deposit banking (Venice, Antwerp, Amsterdam, London). The main financial innovation is the emergence of bond markets (also starting in Venice). Episodes of innovation are contrasted with relatively stagnant environments (the Persian Empire, the Roman Empire, the Spanish Empire). The comparisons suggest that small, open and competing jurisdictions have been more innovative than large empires – as has been suggested by David Hume in 1742.

This two-volume project provides a multi-sectoral perspective over the EU's external projections from traditional as well as critical theoretical and institutional perspectives, and is supported by numerous case studies covering the whole extent of the EU's external relations. The aim is to strive to present new approaches as well as detailed background studies in analyzing the EU as a global actor. Volume 1: The first volume "Theoretical and Institutional Approaches to the EU's External Relations" addresses the EU's overall external post-Lisbon Treaty presence both globally and regionally (e.g. in its "neighborhood"), with a special emphasis on the EU's institutional framework. It also offers fresh and innovative theoretical approaches to understanding the EU's international position. - With a preface by Alvaro de Vasoncelos (former Director European Union Institute for Security Studies) Volume 2: The second volume "Policies, Actions and Influence of the EU's External Relations", examines in both quantitative and qualitative contributions the EU's international efficacy from a political, economic and social perspective based on a plethora of its engagements.
