Managerial Practice Issues in Strategy and Organization (Paperback): T.K. Das Managerial Practice Issues in Strategy and Organization (Paperback)
T.K. Das
R1,745 Discovery Miles 17 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The field of strategy science has grown in both the diversity of issues it addresses and the increasingly interdisciplinary approaches it adopts in understanding the nature and significance of problems that are continuously emerging in the world of human endeavor. These newer kinds of challenges and opportunities arise in all forms of organizations, encompassing private and public enterprises, and with strategies that experiment with breaking the traditional molds and contours. The field of strategy science is also, perhaps inevitably, being impacted by the proliferation of hybrid organizations such as strategic alliances, the upsurge of approaches that go beyond the customary emphasis on competitiveness and profit making, and the intermixing of time-honored categories of activities such as business, industry, commerce, trade, government, the professions, and so on. The blurring of the boundaries between various areas and types of human activities points to a need for academic research to address the consequential developments in strategic issues. Hence, research and thinking about the nature of issues to be tackled by strategy science should also cultivate requisite variety in issues recognized for research inquiry, including the conceptual foundations of strategy and strategy making, and the examination of the critical roles of strategy makers, strategic thinking, time and temporalities, business and other goal choices, diversity in organizing modes for strategy implementation, and the complexities of managing strategy, to name a few. This book series on Research in Strategy Science aims to provide an outlet for ideas and issues that publications in the field do not provide, either expressly or adequately, especially as regards the comprehensive coverage deserved by certain emerging areas of interest. The topics of the volumes in the series will keep in view this objective to expand the research areas and theoretical approaches routinely found in strategy science, the better to permit expanded and expansive treatments of promising issues that may not sufficiently align with the usual research coverage of publications in the field. Managerial Practice Issues in Strategy and Organization contains contributions by leading scholars on significant issues relating to managerial practices in the field of strategy science research. The 11 chapters in this volume cover the topics of Big Science collaborations, open innovations in pharmaceutical companies, complementary roles and relative optimism of company CEOs, CFOs, and Board Chairs, business modelling, management of uncertainty, meta-management practices, proximity in innovation networks, institutional logics in alliances, and using technology in teaching. The chapters collectively present a wide-ranging review of the noteworthy research perspectives on the managerial practice issues in strategy and organization.

Industrial Revolution 4.0 - Economic Foundations and Practical Implications (Hardcover): Stanislaw Mazur Industrial Revolution 4.0 - Economic Foundations and Practical Implications (Hardcover)
Stanislaw Mazur
R4,502 Discovery Miles 45 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The radical transformations to which the economy and society have been subjected for decades have gained momentum in recent years, not least because of the coronavirus pandemic, the consequences of which are yet to be fully understood. As a result, certain economic models and business practices are becoming less sustainable. One of the reasons for this is the rapid advance of Revolution 4.0. The issues raised in this book are central to understanding the theoretical and practical aspects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its overwhelming impact on emerging socio-economic relations. The book addresses the future and flexibility of the labour market in the era of digital transformation; issues related to the emergence of new patterns of production and the distribution of public services. It examines the impact of Revolution 4.0 on the global business services sector and business project management models, in times of increasing complexity. The book covers a broad spectrum of concerns associated with Industry 4.0, such as social, economic, technological, and environmental, making it a comprehensive resource offering state-of-the-art knowledge. Further, it includes a discussion on the perspectives for the development of Revolution 4.0 in the context of the post-pandemic world. This book skillfully combines theoretical considerations with practical applications, offering a valuable, engaging and accessible resource for researchers, scholars, students, policymakers, public decision-makers, and businesspeople alike.

Network Economics - Principles - Strategies - Competition Policy (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Gunter Knieps Network Economics - Principles - Strategies - Competition Policy (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Gunter Knieps
R2,346 R1,955 Discovery Miles 19 550 Save R391 (17%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This textbook on network economics provides essential microeconomic instruments for the analysis of network sectors like telecommunications, transport or energy. Network-specific characteristics emerge both on the cost side and benefit side, requiring network providers to develop innovative entrepreneurial competition strategies for costing, pricing, and investment. From a competition policy perspective, a number of interesting questions arise: In which parts of networks is competition functional? In contrast, where is an abuse of market power to be expected? What is the division of labor between cartel authorities and regulatory agencies? The book develops an analytical framework for all network industries which allows readers to study entrepreneurial strategies as well as regulation and competition policies for network industries.

Describing Construction - Industries, Projects and Firms (Hardcover): Jim Meikle, Rick Best Describing Construction - Industries, Projects and Firms (Hardcover)
Jim Meikle, Rick Best
R4,942 Discovery Miles 49 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This third book from editors Rick Best and Jim Meikle brings together and presents insights into a number of key concepts in the study of construction firms, projects and the group of activities that loosely define the construction industry. The value for readers comes from the collection of a variety of topics in a single volume, which provide a basic understanding of the complexities of construction as more than a set of practical concerns such as labour management and materials handling. Instead, the focus is on analysis of the industry and its component parts from the viewpoints of construction economists and others seeking to understand the drivers and challenges that shape an area of economic activity that is a major contributor in all economies. The aim of this book is to provide an overview and discussion of several aspects of what makes construction tick. It is unlike other industry sectors in many ways, being project-based with often intense competition for work. Where the first book, Measuring Construction, focused on particular areas associated with quantifying various aspects of construction activity and the second, Accounting for Construction, looked more at how we record and report on construction activity, Describing Construction gives readers the views of experts in the field of how the construction industry is described, what its make-up is, it even asks the question: is construction a single industry? This book will change the way most readers understand the 'construction industry', whatever that may be, not from the point of view of visible on-site activities, but through a scientific approach to analysis and understanding of how projects, firms and various sectors of the industry work and how things are changing and may continue to change in future. It is essential reading for students and researchers in construction management, quantity surveying, architecture and engineering.

Market Distortions in Privatisation Processes (Hardcover): Shanker Singham Market Distortions in Privatisation Processes (Hardcover)
Shanker Singham
R1,550 Discovery Miles 15 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Drawing on a range of global case studies, Market Distortions in Privatisation Processes illustrates the ways in which market distortions damaged the ability of privatisation processes to yield concrete benefits to consumers. The book compares and contrasts privatisations of state-owned enterprises around the world where competition informed the regulatory design and thus liberated consumer welfare. In particular, the cases are drawn from the electricity and gas sector, the telecoms industry, and postal services - each of which has been frequently privatised in different context. For each industry, the book explores the UK and US experiences as well as looking at international cases from both developed and developing countries including, where appropriate, Japan, Colombia, Romania and Mexico. The emphasis is on analysing the impact that market distortions have had on the outcomes of those privatisations. The book also looks at how public service objectives were achieved and how they too can be designed in pro-competitive or anti-competitive ways. This book will be of significant interest to readers in international business, economics, and law.

Constructing a More Scientific Economics - John Tomer's Pluralistic and Humanistic Economics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022):... Constructing a More Scientific Economics - John Tomer's Pluralistic and Humanistic Economics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Morris Altman
R4,930 Discovery Miles 49 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

John Tomer was a leading intellectual figure in behavioural economics, making distinct contributions to the theory of the firm, social economy, choice theory, and government policy. His underlying methodology as an economist was to incorporate different disciplinary approaches to the subject at hand, whilst maintaining an underlying respect and understanding of how and why humans behave the way they do. This book brings together a collection of scholars celebrating John Tomer's contributions to the field of economics. Covering key areas of his research, contributing authors discuss the latest research in behavioral economics, the human firm, climate change policy, sustainability, well-being, human capital, and human development. This volume, extending John Tomer's more scientific perspective rooted in behavioural and institutional economics, should find an audience among both scholars and policy advocates. It can also enrich course delivery, providing students with alternative perspectives and approach to economic and socio-economic analysis.

Khuong Minh Vu
R3,329 Discovery Miles 33 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'Prof Vu's timely book provides an excellent analytical study of the growth dynamics in Developing Asia, against the backdrop of a secular shift in the centre of gravity of the global economy from the West to the East. Indeed, his careful attention to data issues and efforts to adapt the standard growth accounting methodology to the Asian context sets an important benchmark for studies in this field. The author's enunciation of a 'strategic (growth) policy framework' with its critical elements of enhancing a country's absorptive capacity and incentives for investment efficiency, underscores the policy imperatives facing Developing Asia in the quest for sustainable and inclusive long-term growth. This book will prove an indispensable reference for policymakers.' - Edward S. Robinson, Monetary Authority of Singapore The advancement of a nation from poverty to prosperity is not a technical process but a great transformation. At the center of this change are two driving forces - emotion, which is referred to as aspiration, anxiety, and sense of responsibility; and enlightenment, which is associated with the freedom from dogmatism, open-mindedness, and the hunger for learning. It is these two factors that have determined not only the remarkable success of Asia in economic development but also the uniqueness of its growth model. This book examines the rise of Asia in the past two decades and draws lessons from its growth patterns. Contents: Foreword by Dale W. Jorgenson Preface 1. Introduction 2. Economics, Capitalism, and Corporations - Contradictions of Corporate Law, Economics, and the Theory of the Firm (Paperback):... Economics, Capitalism, and Corporations - Contradictions of Corporate Law, Economics, and the Theory of the Firm (Paperback)
Wm. Dennis Huber
R1,373 Discovery Miles 13 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a continuation of Corporate Law and the Theory of the Firm: Reconstructing Corporations, Shareholders, Directors, Owners, and Investors. The author extends his analysis of contract law, property law, agency law, trust law, and corporate statutory law and applies that analysis to defy conventional concepts and theories in economics, finance, investment, and accounting and expose the artificial boundaries established by decades of research founded on indefensible assumptions and fallacious conclusions. Using the Humpty Dumpty principle, where words mean what the authors want them to mean, economists have created "strange new worlds" where contract law, property law, agency law, and corporate statutory law no longer apply. The author dismantles the theory of the firm by proving the theory of the firm wilfully and intentionally ignores fundamental contract law, property law, agency law, and corporate statutory law. Contrary to the theory of the firm, shareholders do not own corporations, directors are not agents of shareholders, and shareholders are not investors in corporations. The author proves that by property law and corporate law, capital is not privately owned by capitalists but by corporations. Entire economic and social systems have been constructed that have no basis in law. With the advent of publicly traded corporations, the capital is there, but both capitalists and capitalism have been rendered extinct. This book will appeal to researchers and graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in economics, finance, accounting, law, and sociology, as well as legal scholars, attorneys and accountants.

The Political Economy of International Commodity Cartels - An Economic History of the European Timber Trade in the 1930s... The Political Economy of International Commodity Cartels - An Economic History of the European Timber Trade in the 1930s (Paperback)
Elina Kuorelahti
R1,360 Discovery Miles 13 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Political Economy of International Commodity Cartels examines how international commodity cartels in the 1930s were impacted not only by commercial rivalry, but also by international trade political and diplomatic concerns. This work presents the rise and decline of the European Timber Exporters' Convention (ETEC) and analyses how firms navigated through the cartel game under increasing international competition, pressures from the national governments, and the interventionist endeavours of the League of Nations. Cartels are often associated with, in the standard economic interpretation, business collusion. However, in using vast archive sources and historical methodology, the chapters in this book shed light onto how international relations shaped cartels. The rise of British protectionism, the emergence of the Soviet Union as an industrial power, and the economic rapprochement of the League of Nations in the early 1930s created a wave of political and diplomatic challenges in the timber trading countries and affected cartelisation. Timber firms in the biggest producer countries-Finland and Sweden-were uninterested in international cartel collaboration, but under pressure joined the ETEC nevertheless. This book makes a strong contribution to the fields of business history and cartel studies. It is an essential read for economic historians interested in how political pressure shaped international cartels and how cartels became avenues of diplomacy.

Paper and the British Empire - The Quest for Imperial Raw Materials, 1861-1960 (Paperback): Timo Sarkka Paper and the British Empire - The Quest for Imperial Raw Materials, 1861-1960 (Paperback)
Timo Sarkka
R1,362 Discovery Miles 13 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Paper and the British Empire examines the evolution of the paper industry within British organisational frameworks and highlights the role of the Empire as a market and business-making area in a world of shrinking commerce and rising trade barriers. Drawing on a valuable range of primary sources, this book covers the period 1861-1960 and examines events from the establishment of free trade backed by the gold standard to Britain's membership of the European Free Trade Association. In the field of the paper industry, the speed and intensity of the industrialisation process around the globe have been shaped by a wide variety of variables, including the surrounding institutional framework; entrepreneurial and organisational strategies; the cost and accessibility of transport; and the availability of capital, knowledge, energy resources, and technology. The supply of papermaking raw materials has also been key and has historically been the most important determinant for geographical location and dominance. The research in this work focuses on the roles played by such variants, on the one hand, and demand characteristics on the other. In particular, it considers developments connected to a quest for Empire-grown raw materials in order to tackle the problem of the lack of indigenous raw materials and the resulting dependence on Scandinavian wood pulp imports. This text is of considerable interest to advanced students and researchers in economic history, business history, and the paper industry, and will also be useful to organisations working within the pulp and paper industries.

The Economics of Motivation and Organization - An Introduction (Paperback): Peter-J. Jost The Economics of Motivation and Organization - An Introduction (Paperback)
Peter-J. Jost
R1,452 Discovery Miles 14 520 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this unique book, Peter-J. Jost provides a comprehensive economic-psychological approach for successfully managing employees. Based on the analysis of the employee?s individual work behavior, he illustrates that instead of treating employees as input elements of production, and managing and controlling their work, organizations need to motivate their employees to act in the interest of the firm and in accordance with its goals. The author considers the employee as the ?building block? holding economic organizations together, and outlines how their personal circumstances, behavior and working conditions affect motivation. The influence of individual decision-making processes and psychological factors on behavior in the workplace is also discussed. Theoretical insights are underpinned by a range of case studies, and the impact of inadequate leadership on firms is highlighted. Motivation problems within organizations are evaluated and potential solutions prescribed. This book will prove an insightful and fascinating read for researchers, students and practitioners wishing to develop a deeper understanding of the myriad factors that affect the motivation of employees within an organization.

European Port Cities and Urban Regeneration - Exploring Cultural and Sporting Mega Events at the Water's Edge (Hardcover):... European Port Cities and Urban Regeneration - Exploring Cultural and Sporting Mega Events at the Water's Edge (Hardcover)
Enrico Tommarchi
R4,482 Discovery Miles 44 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Culture- and event-led regeneration have been catalysts for the transformation of redundant urban port areas and for the reframing of the image of many port cities, which notably feature among mega-event bidding and host cities. However, there is little understanding of the impacts of these processes on port-city relationships, as well as of how port city cultures shape mega events and the related regeneration strategies. The book examines the underexplored mutual links between, on the one hand, urban and socio-economic regeneration driven by cultural and sporting mega events and, on the other hand, the spatial, political and symbolic ties between cities and their ports. By adopting a cross-national, comparative perspective, with in-depth case studies (Hull, Rotterdam, Genoa and Valencia) and examples from other port cities across the world where mega events were held, the book engages with issues such as the tension between port and cultural uses, reactions and opposition to mega events in port cities, clashing urban imaginaries drawing on port activity and culture, the role of port authorities and companies in the city's cultural life, the spectacularisation and commodification of local maritime culture and heritage, processes of cultural demaritimisation and remaritimisation of port cities. The book is therefore a contribution towards the bridging of port city and mega-event studies, and it provides insights for port city policy makers and mega-event promoters, drawing from a range of international experiences. The book also shows how societal and political change in the current 'ontologically-insecure' times may undermine the very paradigm of culture- and event-led regeneration in the years to come.

Creating the New Worker - Work, Consumption and Subordination (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Jean-Pierre Durand Creating the New Worker - Work, Consumption and Subordination (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Jean-Pierre Durand
R2,334 Discovery Miles 23 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the relationship between the changing nature of capitalism and the creation of the new worker. In a changing global economy, work - as the activity that structures individuals in capitalism both socially and psychologically - is being undermined. Combining a Gramscian critique of contemporary patterns of capitalist labour control with Lacanian psychoanalysis, Durand examines what kinds of human beings are emerging in and through modern work, or on its margins. Creating the New Worker will be of interest to students and scholars who engage in the sociology and psychology of work, economics, and labour.

Foundations of Organisational Economics - Histories and Theories of the Firm and Production (Paperback): Paul Walker Foundations of Organisational Economics - Histories and Theories of the Firm and Production (Paperback)
Paul Walker
R1,369 Discovery Miles 13 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Foundations of Organisational Economics: Histories and Theories of the Firm and Production delves into a range of key topics to do with the history of the mainstream approach to the theory of production and the theory of the firm. This includes the frameworks used to analyse production, the division of labour and its application to the firm and the development of the neoclassical model of production. The first topic explored is the change from a normative approach to a largely positive approach to the analysis of the theory of production, which occurred around the seventeenth century. The next topic is an examination of the relationship (or the lack of a relationship) between the division of labour and the theory of the firm. In the fourth chapter, the focus is on the development of the proto-neoclassical approach to production. Here, the development of the theories of monopoly, oligopoly and perfect competition are discussed, as well as the theory of input utilisation. Chapter 5 looks at Marshall's idea of the representative firm, which was the main early neoclassical approach to the theory of industry-level production. The penultimate chapter considers the criticisms made of the neoclassical model between 1940 and 1970. This work is an illuminating reference for students and researchers of the history of economic thought, industrial organisation, microeconomic theory and organisational studies.

Nella Hendriyetty, Chris Evans, Chul Ju Kim, Farhad Taghizadeh-Hesary
R4,483 Discovery Miles 44 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A robust and efficient tax administration in a modern tax system requires effective tax policies and legislation. Policy frameworks should cover all aspects of tax administration and include the essential processes of capturing, processing, analyzing, and responding to information provided by taxpayers and others concerning taxpayers' affairs. By far the greatest challenges facing tax administrations in all countries are those posed by the continuing developments in the digital economy. Whereas societies are grappling to come to terms with the transitions from the third industrial or digital revolutions, revenue authorities grapple with the consequences for the sustainability of their tax bases and the efficient administration and collection of taxes. This book presents a critical review of the status of tax systems in Asia and the Pacific in the era of the digital economy. The book suggests how countries can maximize their domestic resource mobilization when confronted by the challenges that digitalization inevitably produces, as well as how they can best harness or take advantage of aspects of digitalization to serve their own needs. The full implications of the COVID-19 crisis are still too uncertain to predict, but it is clear that the crisis will accelerate the trend towards digitalization and also increase pressures on public finances. This, in turn, may shape the preference for, and the nature of, both multilateral and unilateral responses to the tax challenges posed by digitalization and the need to address them. This book will be a timely reference for those researching on taxation in digital economy and for policy makers. Liberalization and Regulation of the Telecommunications Sector in Transition Countries - The Case of Russia (Hardcover, 2009... Liberalization and Regulation of the Telecommunications Sector in Transition Countries - The Case of Russia (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Ekaterina Markova
R2,887 Discovery Miles 28 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Telecommunications are increasingly recognized as a key component in the infrastructure of economic development. For many years, there were state-owned monopolies in the telecommunications sector. In transition economies, they were characterized by especially poor performance and high access deficits, as telecommunications were considered to be a non-profit-oriented production process intended to support the socio-economic superstructures. As a result, the starting point for the reform processes in transition countries was quite poor performed public monopolies, functioned under completely different circumstances as the peers in the market economies.

The main question of this book is what the strategies for the successful future development of the telecommunications sector in transition countries are. The special focus is on Russia, the largest of the transition countries.
