Geographic Information Systems and Health Applications (Hardcover): Geographic Information Systems and Health Applications (Hardcover)
R2,445 Discovery Miles 24 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the health sector is an idea whose time has come. The current applications of GIS in health are diverse and extensive. The present GIS environment is heavily driven by technology and such an approach is indeed logical for the most part. However, the needs of less-developed countries in utilizing the concepts and technologies of mapping should not be neglected in the continuing evolution of GIS. Geographic Information Systems and Health Applications presents a sampling of the many applications utilizing GIS in the field of health.

Early Life Conditions and Rapid Demographic Changes in the Developing World - Consequences for Older Adult Health (Hardcover,... Early Life Conditions and Rapid Demographic Changes in the Developing World - Consequences for Older Adult Health (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Mary McEniry
R3,540 Discovery Miles 35 400 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines the long term consequences of improvements in life expectancy in the mid 20th century which are partly responsible for the growth of the elderly population in the developing world. Rapid demographic changes in child and infant mortality due to the reduction in and better treatment of disease were not often accompanied by parallel increases in standard of living. Lower mortality led to greater survival by those who had suffered poor early life conditions. As a consequence, the early life of these survivors may explain older adult health and in particular the projected increase in adult health disease and diabetes. Recent dietary changes may only compound such early life effects. This study presents findings from historical and survey data on nearly 147,000 older adults in 20 low-, middle- and high-income countries which suggest that the survivors of poor early life conditions born during the 1930s-1960s are susceptible to disease later in life, specifically diabetes and heart disease. As the evidence that the aging process is shaped throughout the entire life course increases, this book adds to the knowledge regarding early life events and older adult health.

Mental Health Practitioner's Guide to HIV/AIDS (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Sana Loue Mental Health Practitioner's Guide to HIV/AIDS (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Sana Loue
R4,154 Discovery Miles 41 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Although efforts have been made and continue to be made to reduce the rate of HIV transmission in the U.S. and globally, the rates continue to increase in the majority of countries. In the U.S., members of minority communities remain especially at risk of HIV transmission. An individual's discovery that he or she has contracted HIV, or that a loved one has contracted the illness, often raises significant issues that necessitate interaction with mental health professionals. Mental Health Practitioner's Guide to HIV/AIDS serves as a quick desk reference for professionals who may be less familiar with the terminology used in HIV/AIDS care and services.

Health Divided - Public Health and Individual Medicine in the Making of the Modern American State (Hardcover): Daniel Sledge Health Divided - Public Health and Individual Medicine in the Making of the Modern American State (Hardcover)
Daniel Sledge
R1,806 Discovery Miles 18 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The United States' health care system stands out for its strict division of policies dealing with public health and individual medicine. Seeking to explain how this division came to be, what alternative paths might have been taken, and how this shapes the contemporary landscape, Daniel Sledge offers nothing less than a reinterpretation of the making of modern American health policy in Health Divided. The vision of those who built the institutions that became the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was, we see here, far more expansive and innovative than has previously been realized-and it came surprisingly close to succeeding. Exploring the history behind its failure, and tracing the inextricable links between public health and national health policy, this book provides a valuable new perspective on the origins of America's disjointed health care system.

An Illustrated History of Health and Fitness, from Pre-History to our Post-Modern World (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Roy J. Shephard An Illustrated History of Health and Fitness, from Pre-History to our Post-Modern World (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Roy J. Shephard
R6,576 Discovery Miles 65 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the health/fitness interaction in an historical context. Beginning in primitive hunter-gatherer communities, where survival required adequate physical activity, it goes on to consider changes in health and physical activity at subsequent stages in the evolution of "civilization." It focuses on the health impacts of a growing understanding of medicine and physiology, and the emergence of a middle-class with the time and money to choose between active and passive leisure pursuits. The book reflects on urbanization and industrialization in relation to the need for public health measures, and the ever-diminishing physical demands of the work-place. It then evaluates the attitudes of prelates, politicians, philosophers and teachers at each stage of the process. Finally, the book explores professional and governmental initiatives to increase public involvement in active leisure through various school, worksite, recreational and sports programmes.

Advance Directives (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Peter Lack, Nikola Biller-Andorno, Susanne Brauer Advance Directives (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Peter Lack, Nikola Biller-Andorno, Susanne Brauer
R4,388 R3,531 Discovery Miles 35 310 Save R857 (20%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume gives an overview on the currently debated ethical issues regarding advance directives from an international perspective. It focuses on a wider understanding of the known and widely accepted concept of patient self-determination for future situations. Although advance directives have been widely discussed since the 1980s, the ethical bases of advance directives still remain a matter of heated debates. The book aims to contribute to these controversial debates by integrating fundamental ethical issues on advance directives with practical matters of their implementation. Cultural, national and professional differences in how advance directives are understood by health care professions and by patients, as well as in laws and regulations, are pinpointed.

Epidemic Politics in Contemporary Vietnam - Public Health and the State (Hardcover): Martha Lincoln Epidemic Politics in Contemporary Vietnam - Public Health and the State (Hardcover)
Martha Lincoln
R3,199 Discovery Miles 31 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Through a tumultuous 20th-century period of revolution and foreign wars, Vietnam's public health system was praised by international observers as a "bright light in an epidemiologically dark world," standing out for its accomplishments in infectious disease control. Since the country's transition to a "market economy with socialist orientation" in the mid-1980s, however, some of these achievements have been reversed as the "renovation" of national systems for welfare and health leaves gaps in the social safety net. A series of cholera outbreaks that spread through Northern Vietnam in 2007-2010 revealed the paradoxes, contradictions, and challenges that Vietnam faces in its post-transition period. This book presents an anthropological analysis of the political, economic, and infrastructural inputs to these epidemics and suggests how the most commonly repeated accounts of disease spread misdirected public attention and suppressed awareness of risk factors in Vietnam's capital. Drawing a parallel to the experience of novel coronavirus in Asia and beyond, this book reflects on how political priorities, economic forces, and cultural struggles influence the experience and the epidemiology of infectious disease.

Contributors focus on a range of traumatic experiences, from environmental disasters (wildfires, Hurricane Katrina) to the Holocaust, from ambiguous loss to war captivity. And the book's final section, "Healing after Trauma," spotlights resilience, forgiveness, religion, and spirituality, using concepts from positive psychology. Included among the topics: The Great East Japan earthquake: tsunami and nuclear disaster. Posttraumatic stress in the aftermath of mass shootings. Psychosocial consequences: appraisal, adaptation, and bereavement after trauma. Loss, chaos, survival and despair: the storm after the storms. Aging with trauma across the lifetime and experiencing trauma in old age. On bereavement and grief: a therapeutic approach to healing. Gustavo Carlo, Lisa J. Crockett, Miguel A. Carranza
R2,975 Discovery Miles 29 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Amid its growing diversity and shifting demographics, the U.S. is still home to glaring health inequities by race, ethnicity, and class. Yet while it is customary to identify poverty as their root cause, other complex mechanisms are involved in their perpetuation. Based on recent major studies on African-American, Latino, Asian-American, and Native American populations, Health Disparities in Youth and Families offers a thorough, nuanced examination of a wide range of causal and protective factors. Rigorous theories and models take into account cultural, contextual, and personal variables, including the roles of family identity, school, and neighborhood, and motivation toward health awareness (with attention paid to less frequently studied phenomena such as within-group inequalities and the Hispanic Health Paradox). Contributors approach their subjects with realism as well as optimism as the book: Provides reliable information on the scope and etiology of health disparities. Identifies the methodological and political challenges associated with this issue. Proposes comprehensive, integrative models for understanding disparities. Features examples of innovative programs for improving minority health. Includes an in-depth chapter on substance use and mental health among Native American youth. Offers a useful starting point for the exchange of ideas necessary to address health disparities. A provocative resource on a pressing social concern, Health Disparities in Youth and Families is necessary reading for health policy researchers, health care providers, and others dedicated to better health outcomes for all Americans Content Level Research Keywords health literacy - minority health - patient-provider communication - provider discrimination Related subjects Community Psychology - Public Health

Kathryn M. Borman, Phillip Obermiller
R2,502 Discovery Miles 25 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume focuses on Appalachians as a case study of internal migration in developed countries. Since World War II, Appalachian miners have left the coal towns of their mountain region for the car towns of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Migrations have ebbed and flowed with economic expansion and recession. Some descendants who are several generations removed from the migration experience do not identify with their mountainous background, but many urban Appalachians have maintained their cultural ties to the region and its values. This collection of essays is the fourth in a series of studies of Appalachian society in relation to mainstream America. While earlier works have concentrated on the migration process, jobs, housing, and ethnic group formation in urban settings, this volume addresses the important issues of health, environment, and education in the urban Appalachian context. As such, it is the only resource available for educators and health and human service professionals involved with this social sector.

The Green Solution to Breast Cancer - A Promise for Prevention (Hardcover): Kristen Abatsis McHenry The Green Solution to Breast Cancer - A Promise for Prevention (Hardcover)
Kristen Abatsis McHenry
R1,676 Discovery Miles 16 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This unique, research-based investigation of the U.S. breast cancer movement compares the "pink" and "green" efforts within the movement and documents their use of similar citizen-science alliances, despite the contention over the use of consumer-based activism and pink products. Breast cancer activism is one of the most flourishing research and health advocacy movements in U.S. history. Yet the incidence of breast cancer is continuing to increase. This critical and revealing text investigates breast cancer activism in its two forms-the "pink movement" that focuses on developing awareness of, coping with, and managing breast cancer; and the "green movement" that strives to determine the possible environmental causes of breast cancer-such as pesticides, chemicals, and water and air pollution-and thereby hopes to prevent breast cancer. What caused this new green movement to develop? Will it replace or merge with the pink movement? Does either approach offer more promise for a solution? And how do the two movements differ in their positions or methodology towards a similar goal? With information culled from interviews with more than 50 industry stakeholders, The Green Solution to Breast Cancer: A Promise for Prevention argues that key attributes such as strategy, mission, and branding have led to a greater convergence between the pink and green wings of the movement and presents information that enables readers to consider if either approach might be the shorter route to beating breast cancer. Examines research findings that suggest that the pink and green aspects of the breast cancer movement are no longer separate but in fact are converging towards a focus on environmental prevention Provides an in-depth examination of advocacy organizations and the ways in which an organization's structure and ideology shape its agenda and strategies Looks critically at controversial aspects of the consumerism of the pink movement, the small portion of sales actually given to cancer research, and other shortcomings of this attempt to shop our way out of a nonetheless still-increasing disease Presents valuable information for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in political science within American politics or health politics courses as well as those studying women's and gender studies, sociology, nursing, and non-profit enterprises

Hua He, Pan Wu, Ding-Geng (Din) Chen
R4,689 Discovery Miles 46 890 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book compiles and presents new developments in statistical causal inference. The accompanying data and computer programs are publicly available so readers may replicate the model development and data analysis presented in each chapter. In this way, methodology is taught so that readers may implement it directly. The book brings together experts engaged in causal inference research to present and discuss recent issues in causal inference methodological development. This is also a timely look at causal inference applied to scenarios that range from clinical trials to mediation and public health research more broadly. In an academic setting, this book will serve as a reference and guide to a course in causal inference at the graduate level (Master's or Doctorate). It is particularly relevant for students pursuing degrees in statistics, biostatistics, and computational biology. Researchers and data analysts in public health and biomedical research will also find this book to be an important reference.

Thomas R. Marshall
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Public Opinion, Public Policy, and Smoking tracks Americans' changing attitudes about cigarette smoking over the last century. With data from more than five thousand public and privately conducted polls, this book carefully examines how Americans came to understand the health risks of smoking; how the tobacco industry sought to reframe smoking; and how public opinion support for tobacco control affected lawsuits, elections, and public policies. This book tests several well-known linkage models that connect public opinion with public policy. It shows that conventional wisdom about public opinion and tobacco control policy is often mistaken. This book offers the first in-depth look at American public opinion and cigarette smoking during the last century.
