In this issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America, guest editors Drs. Henry Galan and Patricia Huguelet bring their considerable expertise to the topic of Emergencies in Obstetrics and Gynecology. This issue provides a comprehensive overview of obstetric and gynecologic emergencies, with emphasis on standards of practice and interdisciplinary collaboration. Expert authors discuss how to arrive at a differential diagnosis and how to prevent, manage, and treat an emergency. Contains 15 practice-oriented topics including hypertensive crisis in pregnancy; sexual assault/domestic violence; evaluation and management of heavy vaginal bleeding (non-cancerous); first trimester miscarriage; simulation in Ob/Gyn emergencies; and more. Provides in-depth clinical reviews on emergencies in obstetrics and gynecology, offering actionable insights for clinical practice. Presents the latest information on this timely, focused topic under the leadership of experienced editors in the field. Authors synthesize and distill the latest research and practice guidelines to create clinically significant, topic-based reviews.
Translational Advances in Gynecologic Cancers straddles the bench and bed divide by highlighting important and interesting research that is translatable to the clinic. The contents of this book cover the entire spectrum, from promising laboratory based research, to clinical trial efforts. Further, new therapeutic indications based upon randomized phase III trials are also included. Clinicians will learn about lab-based science that is about to enter the clinic, along with the rationale behind translational endpoints in trials. Researchers will be able to identify and understand the clinical needs of patients with these types of tumors to improve their research focus.
Biomechanics of the Female Pelvic Floor, Second Edition, is the first book to specifically focus on this key part of women's health, combining engineering and clinical expertise. This edited collection will help readers understand the risk factors for pelvic floor dysfunction, the mechanisms of childbirth related injury, and how to design intrapartum preventative strategies, optimal repair techniques, and prostheses. The authors have combined their expertise to create a thorough, comprehensive view of female pelvic floor biomechanics in order to help different disciplines discuss, research, and drive solutions to pressing problems. The book includes a common language for the design, conduct, and reporting of research studies in female PFD, and will be of interest to biomechanical and prosthetic tissue engineers and clinicians interested in female pelvic floor dysfunction, including urologists, urogynecologists, maternal fetal medicine specialists, and physical therapists.
Complications during and after pregnancy and birth result in hundreds of thousands of deaths each year and can lead to lifelong health problems. Even with these complications, however, early detection and prenatal care can further reduce risk to the mother and baby. However, inadequate medical services, shortage of medical resources, and lack of or misinformation can hinder a woman's ability to successfully manage her pregnancy. This not only affects the health of the people immediately concerned and their families, but also has implications for global stability and the balance between population and resources. Evaluation and Management of High-Risk Pregnancies: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on safeguarding mothers and babies through the availability of medical knowledge, cost-effective interventions, and the availability of widespread obstetric services. While highlighting topics such as labor complications, maternal mortality, and reproductive health, this publication explores exposure to sexually transmitted diseases as well as the methods of physical and mental healthcare. This book is ideally designed for obstetricians, gynecologists, world health organizations, policymakers, hospitals, health professionals, reproduction researchers, and physicians.
Overcoming Drug Resistance in Gynecologic Cancers provides up-to-date information related to important gynecologic cancers and focuses on mechanisms of drug resistance, genetics, signaling, immunology, health disparities, nanotechnology, economic considerations and financial impacts. The book covers not only drug resistance but also important means to reverse resistance both in the laboratory and clinic. The book discusses topics such as lifestyle, nutrition and risk of gynecologic cancers, the financial impact of drug resistance, chemosensitizing agents and targeted therapies in cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer, immunotherapy to overcome drug resistance, and genetic polymorphisms in gynecologic cancers. Additionally, it discusses ethnic and racial health disparity perspectives and future developments in chemosensitizing activities to reverse drug resistance in gynecologic cancers. It is a valuable resource for cancer researchers, oncologists, clinicians and other biomedical field members who are interested in new approaches to improve chemotherapy outcome in patients with gynecologic cancers.
This book highlights both conventional and nanomaterials-based biosensors for the detection of cervical cancers. It describes developments in the selective and sensitive electrochemical biosensors based on DNA for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer. Further, this book covers other nano-biosensing systems such as nano-thermometry-based sensing platforms, mechanical sensing platforms encompassing piezoelectric-based sensors, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy based on PEGylated arginine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, and field-effect transistor-based platforms for the early detection of cervical cancer. Also, it presents conventional platforms such as vibrational spectroscopy and polymerase chain reaction techniques for the diagnosis of cervical cancer. Finally, it reviews currently available biomarkers for the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and presents strategies for developing novel biomarkers based on cellular and molecular approaches. As such, this book is a comprehensive resource for researchers and clinicians working in cervical cancer diagnostics.
In collaboration with Consulting Editor, Dr. William Rayburn, Guest Editor Dr. Edward Chien has created a state-of-the-art monograph that focuses on Premature Rupture of Membranes. The issue separates articles into three sections: Prediction and Prevention, Interventions, and Special Topics, with articles on the following topics: Vaginal Microbiome; Cervical and Fetal Membrane Biomechanics; Management of the Short Cervix, Prolapsing Membranes, and Rescue Cerclage; Time to Deliver: Early - Late Preterm Management; Tocolysis; Use of Corticosteroids in Premature Rupture of Membranes; Antibiotics Prophylaxis for PPROM; Viral Infections (HIV, Hep B, Herpes, HCV); Antenatal Monitoring after PPROM; Periviable PROM; PPROM in Multiple Gestations and after Fetal Surgery; and Neonatal Issues after PPROM. Readers will come away with the current and clinical information they need to improve patient outcomes.
The vast majority of women suffer from back pain while they are pregnant, during labor, and/or post partum. This book was written to address, empower, and inform women about back pain related to pregnancy. The book explains the unique physical conditions associated with pregnancy, why women might be experiencing discomfort and, more importantly, how back pain can be avoided.
In collaboration with Consulting Editor, Dr. William Rayburn, Dr. Haywood Brown has put together a an important issue of Obstetric and Gynecology Clinics of North America that provides clinical information on how to prepare the new mother with life-long health after delivery. Top experts have contributed clinical review articles on the following topics: Breast feeding benefits for mother and infant; Achieving a healthier weight between pregnancies; Gestational diabetes follow-up and long-term health; Postpartum depression and other Mental health issues; Cesarean delivery: Trail of labor for vaginal birth following cesarean; Preterm birth prevention of recurrence; Hypertension, Preeclampsia and cardiovascular disease; Immunizations; Incontinence: Diagnosis and management; Pregnancy loss and stillbirth: Evaluation and follow up; The new mother with substance abuse; and The role of telemedicine in postpartum follow up. Readers will come away with the clinical tools they need to prepare their patients for life-long health after delivery. |
