Spinal manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is a procedure intended for patients who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders in conjunction with biomechanical dysfunction. Performed using monitored anesthesia care, this technique is overcoming its controversial image and receiving regular use by a great number of practitioners. Manipulation Under Anesthesia is the first book to present the procedure from a historical perspective to present day use. Focusing on all aspects of MUA technique, the text provides an outline that represents this procedure from a scientific perspective, along with information concerning patient selection criteria, and documentation explaining outcomes from patient procedures. It discusses the protocols and standards by which the procedure should be incorporated into the facilities where it is being performed, features an overview of the generic procedure and policies for documenting results, and addresses the overall use of the procedure from pre-MUA through post-MUA rehabilitation. With justification for the procedure from both a clinical and patient management standpoint, this unique compilation of information is useful as both a reference and as an educational aid for doctors. It provides the necessary tools for investigating the procedure and incorporating it into any healthcare specialty.

Trauma is the leading cause of death among people under the age of 40 and it ranks third for all age groups. Still, relatively few clinicians specialize in trauma and training is often obtained through experience. The number of trauma patients is expected to continue to grow as pre-hospital care continues to advance. As well, hospitals increasingly see trauma treatment, which requires no pre-approval, as a good source of revenue. Given these developments, the number of opportunities for specialists trained in trauma, including anesthesiologists and critical care physicians, will expand in the years ahead. This book addresses the need for an up-to-date, comprehensive and clinically focused volume for practitioners and trainees in trauma anesthesia and critical care. It is organized by organ system. The editor is an attending physician at a major urban hospital center recognized worldwide for its outstanding emergency medical services including trauma care and is recruiting leading trauma anesthesiologists to contribute. Anesthesiologists, pain medicine physicians, critical care physicians and trainees are the target audience.

Highly Commended, BMA Medical Book Awards 2015 In 2008, Paul Farmer and Jim Yong Kim described global surgery as the "neglected stepchild" of healthcare, and now leaders from around the world are working to redefine it as a human right through the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery. In order to help advance global surgery and anesthesia as a public health intervention, providers require a practical, hands-on manual to train and educate them to provide safe and effective surgery and anesthesia in resource-limited settings. In an effort to respond to that need, over 140 clinicians from high-, low-, and middle-income countries collaborated to create the Global Surgery and Anesthesia Manual: Providing Care in Resource-Limited Settings. This guide provides in-depth instruction on epidemiology and ethics surrounding surgical services, and on anesthesia, perioperative care, trauma surgery, and non-trauma surgery. With contributions from a group of culturally and academically diverse clinicians, each chapter is enriched by at least one commentary from a surgeon or anesthesia provider in a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who shares first-hand perspectives on the realities and complexities of providing surgical care in these settings with limited resources. The book will serve as a core reference for surgeons and anesthesiologists at all levels interested in global surgery. It will assist those working in LMICs who are confronted with surgical problems that they are not routinely exposed to in their traditional practice. Filled with expert guidance, decision-making algorithms, and treatment options, it will also serve as an invaluable text for trainees in LMICs as it covers the majority of surgical disease processes that would be encountered in such settings.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has introduced Constructed Response Questions (CRQs) as an innovative way of testing trainees, in the fields of anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, in their final FRCA examinations from September 2019. CRQs are a more structured way of assessing knowledge and understanding; they also assess the application of knowledge, evaluation and judgement. This book categorises 134 questions based on the Royal College model, with six mandatory sections of training and two separate sections on general duties and optional units. In the FRCA exam, there will be a total of 12 questions, one each from the six mandatory units of training (neuroanaesthesia; obstetric anaesthesia; paediatric anaesthesia; pain; cardiac anaesthesia; and intensive care), and six from general duties which may include one from optional unit training (perioperative medicine; regional, orthopaedic and trauma anaesthesia; other topics in general medicine; and optional topics). The answers have been extensively researched from recent BJA Education papers, e-learning, CEPD resources and other vital educational materials. To make it easy for the revising candidate, the questions have been split into their respective subspecialty topics, so the reader can assess their knowledge appropriately in a timely manner. It is an ideal companion for candidates who are preparing for their final exams in anaesthesia and will help to assess their preparation and guide appropriate revision. The topics are pertinent for other anaesthetic exams worldwide, including the European exams, Australian and New Zealand fellowships and the Indian DNB exams. The authors have extensive experience in anaesthetic teaching and lead anaesthetic intermediate teaching in the UK, running regular and successfully attended courses. This book will help candidates to adapt to the recent exam changes and revise in an efficient manner. It will not only be an invaluable educational resource for trainee anaesthetists but also for practising anaesthetists. All anesthesiologists are confronted with patients who show bleeding disorders, whether congenital, acquired, or pharmacologically induced. Although many studies, meta-analyses, guidelines, and textbooks have been published on the subject, they mostly cover specific aspects or require a thorough knowledge of hemostasis. The goal of this book is to provide the anesthesiologist with an overview of hemostasis and the mechanisms underlying bleeding and coagulation in general and to assist in the understanding of specific coagulation disorders as they may occur in the various anesthesia subspecialties. It is hoped that, through the provision of practical information and tools, the book will help residents and trained anesthesiologists to manage one of the most frustrating challenges that they face: the bleeding patient. A full understanding of coagulation requires a lifelong career, and this book is not intended to replace the consulting hematologist, whose expert opinion should always be sought. The available procoagulant blood products and drugs all have potentially dangerous side-effects; furthermore, in bleeding disorders pitfalls are frequent and a misdiagnosis can have potentially catastrophic consequences. The aim of the editors is thus instead to enhance the collaboration between the disciplines of Anesthesiology and Hematology.
