R469 R385 Discovery Miles 3 850 Save R84 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Concern. Compassion. Doubt. Despair. Anger. Hope. Imagine juggling these feelings every day in a situation where your ability to manage them could be the difference between life and death. For Dr Chris Luke, a consultant in emergency medicine, these experiences are an intrinsic part of the job - ranging from rage at a system that often leaves vulnerable people waiting anxiously, to the incomparable satisfaction of relieving patients' suffering and distress and making a real difference in people's lives and in society. Here, Dr Luke reveals his own rollercoaster journey from orphanage boy to one of the leading emergency physicians in the country. Luke's recollections and reflections on a life spent on the frontline - grappling with his own health issues, burnout and sometimes despair at a dysfunctional system - make for compelling reading. A Life in Trauma is a frank, remarkable account of a career spent helping others, sometimes at a painful personal cost, and ultimately offers a positive outlook on the potential of Ireland's healthcare system in the future.

B. Rowe
R7,238 Discovery Miles 72 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Emergency physicians assess and manage a wide variety of problems from patients presenting with a diversity of severities, ranging from mild to severe and life-threatening. They are expected to maintain their competency and expertise in areas where there is rapid knowledge change. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is the first book of its kind in emergency medicine to tackle the problems practicing physicians encounter in the emergency setting using an evidence-based approach. It summarizes the published evidence available for the diagnosis and treatment of common emergency health care problems in adults. Each chapter contextualizes a topic area using a clinical vignette and generates a series of key clinically important diagnostic and treatment questions. By completing detailed reviews of diagnostic and treatment research, using evidence from systematic reviews, RCTs, and prospective observational studies, the authors provide conclusions and practical recommendations. Focusing primarily on diagnosis in areas where evidence for treatment is well accepted (e.g. DVTs), and treatment in other diseases where diagnosis is not complex (e.g. asthma), this text is written by leading emergency physicians at the forefront of evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is ideal for emergency physicians and trainees, emergency department staff, and family physicians specialising in the acute care of medical and injured patients.

Emergency laparoscopic surgery in the elderly and frail patient (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Ferdinando Agresta, Mauro Podda,... Emergency laparoscopic surgery in the elderly and frail patient (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Ferdinando Agresta, Mauro Podda, Fabio Cesare Campanile, Carlo Bergamini, Gabriele Anania
R5,227 Discovery Miles 52 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The global population is aging rapidly, and as a result emergency abdominal surgery for acute abdomen in the elderly has become a global issue. Demographic changes in the population have also altered the profile of emergency abdominal surgery, with typical causes of acute abdomen in the elderly including acute cholecystitis, incarcerated hernia, bowel obstruction and appendicitis. In these patients, recovery from surgery is often complicated, leading to longer hospital stays compared with younger patients. Laparoscopy in the emergency setting is well established and offers a number of advantages over open surgical approaches, such as reduced postoperative pain, length of hospital stay and complication rates. While laparoscopic surgery for acute diverticulitis has become more widespread, in other conditions, like small bowel obstruction and perforated peptic ulcer, laparotomy is still used in about 70% of cases. Further, despite the urgent need for knowledge regarding surgical treatment of acute abdomen in the elderly, there is still a lack of evidence in this relevant clinical field. This book analyzes the management strategies and critically evaluates the outcomes of laparoscopic emergency surgery for acute abdomen in the elderly according to the principles of evidence-based medicine. Discussing each topic clearly, and promoting the use of emergency laparoscopy in elderly patients, the book is intended for young general surgeons and surgeons in training with at least a basic knowledge of surgery for acute abdomen. It is also useful as a quick reference tool during on-call shifts.

PHTLS: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Military Edition (Paperback, 9th Revised edition): National Association of Emergency... PHTLS: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Military Edition (Paperback, 9th Revised edition)
National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT)
R2,044 Discovery Miles 20 440 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

On the battlefield, seconds count. PHTLS: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Military Ninth Edition teaches and reinforces the principles of rapidly assessing a trauma patient using an orderly approach, immediately treating life-threatening problems as they are identified, and minimizing any delays in initiating transport to an appropriate destination. Developed by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) in cooperation with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ASC-COT), PHTLS, the Military Ninth Edition reflects current, evidence-based knowledge and practice, and promotes critical-thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. Since 1996, Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) has improved the care rendered in combat prehospital environments. TCCC is the battlefield prehospital component of the Joint Trauma System, an organization within the Department of Defense that projects combat trauma care out to the point of injury and continues that care seamlessly while bringing the casualty home for recuperation and rehabilitation. TCCC guidelines are continuously revised and updated by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (Co-TCCC), an all-volunteer group of military medicine and trauma care specialists. The membership of Co-TECC includes combat medics, corpsmen, and pararescuemen as well as physicians and physician assistants. PHTLS: Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Military Ninth Edition is the next step in the evolution of the premier global prehospital trauma education program, a partnership between PHTLS and TCCC that goes back to the fourth edition of this manual. Military Ninth Edition continues the shared mission to promote excellence in trauma care by all providers and in all environments. In addition to the PHTLS core content, it features thirteen chapters written by military prehospital trauma care experts for practitioners in the military environment. Military Ninth Edition includes: Scenario - An opening case study that presents the key concepts of the chapter in a realistic patient or casualty care situation that encourages the participant to ask, "What would I do?" Key Terms - All key terms that appear in the Glossary are highlighted within the chapters. Engaging Art Program - The Military Ninth Edition features photos and illustrations that depict the realities of battlefield prehospital care. Summary - A list of the key concepts of the chapter. Scenario Solution - A discussion on how the patient or casualty in the opening scenario is assessed and treated in the field or on the battlefield and during transport.

Modern Anesthetics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Jurgen Schuttler, Helmut Schwilden Modern Anesthetics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Jurgen Schuttler, Helmut Schwilden
R15,095 Discovery Miles 150 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Some important constraints of anesthesia must be taken into consideration when the pharmacological properties of modern anesthetics are discussed. The most imp- tant of these could be that the target effect be achieved preferably within seconds, at most within a few minutes. Similarly, offset of drug action should be achieved within minutes rather hours. The target effects, such as unconsciousness, are pot- tially life-threatening, as are the side effects of modern anesthetics, such as respi- tory and cardiovascular depression. Finally, the patient's purposeful responses are not available to guide drug dosage, because, either the patient is unconscious, or more problematically, the patient is aware but unable to communicate pain because of neuromuscular blockade. These constraints were already recognised 35 years ago, when in 1972 Volume XXX entitled "Modern Inhalation Anesthetics" appeared in this Handbook Series. The present volume is meant as a follow up and extension of that volume. At the beginning of the 1970's anesthesia was commonly delivered by inhalation, with only very few exceptions. The clinical understanding of that time considered anesthesia as a unique state achieved by any of the inhalation anesthetics, in- pendent of their specific molecular structure. "The very mechanism of anesthetic action at the biophase" was discussed within the theoretical framework of the "u- tary theory of narcosis".

This scenario-based text provides answers to urgent and emergent questions in acute, emergency, and critical care situations focusing on the electrocardiogram in patient care management. The text is arranged in traditional topics areas such as ACS, dysrhythmia, etc yet each chapter is essentially a question with several cases illustrating the clinical dilemma - the chapter itself is a specific answer to the question.

This is a unique format among textbooks with an ECG focus. The clinical scenarios cover the issues involved in detecting and managing major cardiovascular conditions. Focused, structured discussion then solves these problems in a clinically relevant, rapid, and easy to read fashion.

This novel approach to ECG instruction is ideal for practicing critical care and emergency physicians, specialist nurses, cardiologists, as well as students and trainees with a special interest in the ECG.
