Radiology Life Support (RAD-LS) - A Practical Approach (Paperback): William Bush Jr Radiology Life Support (RAD-LS) - A Practical Approach (Paperback)
William Bush Jr
R1,102 R945 Discovery Miles 9 450 Save R157 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Radiology Life Support' focuses on the adverse effects and life-threatening emergencies caused by reactions to the contrast media used in every modern radiology department. Such reactions are relatively infrequent yet can be severe and are therefore difficult to identify and then handle safely without training. All radiologists will experience at least a few such reactions throughout their career. This book teaches proper recognition and treatment of adverse contrast reactions, proper use of sedation and analgesic agents, proper management of an airway in an emergency situation and principle concepts in basic and advanced life support (including early defibrilation). The text is based on the successful training course run by the editors and sponsored by the American Roentgen Ray Society. Adverse reactions to contrast agents are somewhat difficult for physicians without practice to identify and then handle effectively. This volume is a useful aid to the identification process.

Disaster Preparedness and Response (Paperback): Paul P Rega Disaster Preparedness and Response (Paperback)
Paul P Rega
R1,977 R1,515 Discovery Miles 15 150 Save R462 (23%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Disaster medicine has occupied an increasingly important niche within the specialty of emergency medicine over the latter half of the 20th century. Regardless of whether an event was natural, anthropogenic, or a combination of both, emergency medicine was and is the ideal discipline to develop the human resources, the strategies, the tactics, and the evidence- based research to elevate the field of disaster medicine. It began, organizationally speaking, with Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and it is continuing through the 2019 COVID- 19 pandemic and beyond. Now that we are well into the 21st century, we must steady our footing as a specialty on the 20th century's foundation so that we can wrestle with the more intricate challenges of the future. In the past two decades our global populations have experienced sectarian violence, wars, genocide, migration, terrorism, emerging infectious diseases, and pandemics. These natural and anthropogenic events will only worsen exponentially as we become intrinsically trapped by the effects of climate change. The United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recently concluded that regardless of how we try to reverse the effects of global warming, what we are experiencing now in terms of hurricanes, floods, and droughts will continue to worsen over the next 30 years. Should we, as a species, continue to equivocate and as global temperatures climb, these events will become more frequent and more catastrophic. "Catastrophic" may even be too mild a term. It is possible that over the next few years, the academic arm of emergency medicine may need to consider developing a curriculum devoted to "Cataclysmic Medicine." To confront these possibilities, there first needs to be a knowledge of disaster medicine and disaster management at its most basic level. It begins with crisis leadership, command and control, communications, and coordination. When all these pieces of the jigsaw puzzle are fitted together properly and enclosed by a proper ethical frame, then the best and most ethical and moral disaster medical can will be provided to the patient and to the community. The intent of this book is to introduce these concepts using diverse viewpoints and scenarios. Readers are challenged to cogitate, create, and layer their own set of building blocks upon the preexisting foundation, thereby reinforcing and sustaining their own capacity to prepare for and respond to any adverse eventuality, mass casualty or otherwise. I hope that the experiential and evidence- based contents of this book will inspire readers to delve deeper into the nuances of disaster medicine and will serve as an impetus for a more profound quest for knowledge and a desire to serve those who will be experiencing the worst moments of their lives. There is a dire need for reference materials for practitioners which expand upon theoretical/scientific concepts and principles and provide practical, straightforward guidance to professionals working in the field. The increasing amount of public health emergencies, e.g. SARS, Ebola, Zika etc. require professionals to increase their preparedness to respond in outbreak or disaster situations and this book becomes a useful tool for needed action. Dr Erma Manoncourt, Vice-President of Membership and Co-Chair Global Working Group on the Social Determinants of Health, IUHPE, Paris, France. This is the first ever practical guide to the valuable role that health promotion can play in disease outbreaks and health emergencies. Over the past 20 years the number of disease outbreaks has increased alongside a significant role played out by international agencies involved in emergency responses. The book comprehensively covers the role that health promoters have in this new and exciting field of international work including data collection, communication, community capacity building and engagement and rumour management. Part 1 provides a detailed overview of the role of health promotion in disease outbreaks and health emergencies. Part 2 directly addresses the role of health promotion in two distinct types of disease outbreaks: person to person and vector borne disease transmission. Part 3 covers the role of health promotion in specialist areas of work in disease outbreaks and health emergencies. Health Promotion in Disease Outbreaks and Health Emergencies is essential reading for health promotion and public health students worldwide, as well as for UN agencies and international NGOs working in this emerging field.

Many hospital emergency departments are overcrowded and short-staffed, with a limited number of available hospital beds. It is increasingly hard for emergency departments and their staff to provide the necessary level of care for medical patients. Caring for people with psychiatric disabilities raises different issues and calls on different skills.
In Emergency Department Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient, Dr. Stefan uses research, surveys, and statutory and litigation materials to examine problems with emergency department care for clients with psychiatric disorders. She relies on interviews with emergency department nurses, doctors and psychiatrists, as well as surveys of people with psychiatric disabilities to present the perspectives of both the individuals seeking treatment, and those providing it.
This eye-opening book explores the structural pressures on emergency departments and identifies the burdens and conflicts that undermine their efforts to provide compassionate care to people in psychiatric crisis. In addition to presenting a new analysis of the source of these problems, Dr. Stefan also suggests an array of alternatives to emergency department treatment for people in psychiatric crisis. Moreover, the author proposes standards for treatment of these individuals when they do inevitably end up in a hospital emergency department.
Emergency Department Treatment of the Psychiatric Patient presents a thoughtful and thorough analysis of the difficulties faced by people with psychiatric disabilities when seeking emergency medical care. It is essential reading for anyone working in a hospital emergency department, as well as health care policy makers, and advocatesand lawyers for people with psychiatric disabilities.

Here and Now - The Politics of Social Space in D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf (Paperback): Youngjoo Son Here and Now - The Politics of Social Space in D.H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf (Paperback)
Youngjoo Son
R1,148 Discovery Miles 11 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Working at the crossroads of contemporary geographical and cultural theory, the book explores how social spaces function as sites which foreground D. H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf's critiques of the social order and longings for change. Looking at various social spaces from homes to nations to utopian space brought into the here and now the book shows the ways in which these writers criticize and deconstruct the contemporary symbolic, physical, and discursive spatial topoi of the dominant socio-spatial order and envision a more liberating and inclusive human geography. In addition, the book calls for the need to redress the tendency of some spatial theories to underestimate the political potential of literary discourse about space, instead of simply and mechanically appropriating some theoretical concepts to literary criticism. One of the central findings in the book, therefore, is that literary texts can perform subversive interventions in the production of social space through their critical interaction with dominant spatial codes.
