Rescue Robotics presents the most significant findings of the DDT Project on robots and systems for urban search and rescue. This project was launched by the Japanese government in 2002 with the aim of applying a wide variety of robotics technologies to find a solution to the problem of disaster response, especially urban search and rescue in large-scale earthquakes. From 2002 to 2007 more than 100 researchers took part in the DDT Project, coming from a wide spectrum of research and development to make up four research groups: Aerial Robot Systems MU (Mission Unit), Information Infrastructure System MU, In-Rubble Robot System MU, and On-Rubble Robot System MU. This book discusses their development and testing of various robotic systems and technologies such as serpentine robots, traced vehicles, intelligent human interface and data processing, as well as analysing and verifying the results of these experiments. Rescue Robotics will be of interest to researchers and students, but will also prove useful for emergency response personnel. It offers an insight into the state of the art of rescue robotics and its readers will benefit from a knowledge of the advanced technologies involved in this field.

Comparatively little is known about the risk of sudden death associated with exercise in young competitive athletes, and whether the benefits of sports activity outweigh the hazards of exercise-related fatal events is a clinical dilemma. This is only a small part of the story, however, as there are considerable effects of exercise whether it be at a competitive level or on a 'leisure' level on patients of all ages. This in itself is of massive importance to the cardiac patient population as exercise is a key component of effective recovery and recommended as central in the prevention of much cardiac disease.

The prevalence of obesity, an important risk factor for various diseases, has increased markedly worldwide in recent years. The results of long-term dietary behavioural therapy, however, remain sadly inadequate, with a relapse rate of about 90%. Surgery is still the only effective treatment for these patients. The annual number of weight loss operations performed in the United States in the early 1990s totaled only about 16,000, but by 2005 the figure exceeded 200,000. The anesthetic care of severely obese patients entails particular issues, and difficulties are believed to escalate in the presence of co-morbidities. Despite this, outcome data in respect of anesthetic care and pain management are still scarce. Anesthetic Management of the Obese Patient considers a wide range of important practical issues and controversies. Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) usually represents the final step in the management of severe chronic respiratory diseases: a large proportion of patients suffering from these conditions is involved and the corresponding impact for the Health Institutions and the Society is dramatically increasing. Although LTOT is well known and widely used since long ago in most modern countries, it still represents a challenging topic due to the huge amount of variables which can affect both its efficacy and effectiveness. Unfortunately, patients, doctors, care-givers, together with health institutions and political decision makers frequently have different visions on LTOT, thus highly contributing to obtain uneven results and changing outcomes. The focus of this volume is on new insights and novel perspectives of LTOT. Modern society is, to a great extent, characterised by a tremendous growth in transportation -- the freedom to travel is a central and fundamental human value. As mobility has increased so have health problems. The number of fatalities and serious injuries caused by road traffic is unacceptable, and, while a downward trend is visible in most countries, there still remains a lot to be done. The conference we are opening today is the fourth in the series. Karolinska Institute is the largest medical university in Sweden. It is dedicated to improving health through research, educa- tion and dissemination of information and ideas. The series on traffic safety is one of the ways in which we are disseminating information and ideas on an international front. Karolinska Institute is 190 years old. The Medico Chirurgiska Institute was originally established in 1811 by royal decree after wars and cholera epidemics. In 1822, it became known by the name "Carolinska" . Amongst many other international endeavors, Karolinska Institute is perhaps best known for the nomination and appointments of Nobel Prize winners in medicine and physiology. Under the terms of Alfred Nobel's will, the prize winners are nominated and chosen by the Nobel Assembly of Karolinska Institute. During the hundred years that the prize has been in existence, several researchers from Karolinska Institute have become laureates. These are Hugo Theorell in 1955; Ragnar Granit in 1967; Ulf von Euler in 1970; and Sune Bergstrom and Bengt Samuelsson in 1982. In 1987, the medicine prize was awarded to Tonegawa from v Japan and in 1994 the literature prize was awarded to Oe Kenzaburo.

With the introduction of new post-graduate Medical training in the UK, virtually all doctors will be exposed to some form of surgical training prior to specialization. Many of these doctors will have little exposure to surgical emergencies in medical school. Thus, they may unnecessarily refer to a senior doctor when not needed, or catastrophically neglect a patient needing urgent surgical opinion. Andersson of the Institute for Futures Studies; and finally, Dr. Arne Witt16v and Lars Anell from AB Volvo. And let me give a special welcome to our friends from Africa. I will be visiting a number of African nations in January. And while my main mission is to promote trade and investment with the United States, we will be talking about safety, too. Airline safety, for example, is a big concern, as Africa grows and prospers and the demand for air travel expands. We discussed it during recent meetings of the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal several weeks ago. And we will do so again during my trip. plan to talk about how my department can help the Also, we many nations of Africa improve highway safety. Africa relies heavily on road transportation. But highway fatalities are very high. And the economic costs are very steep, especially for Africa's fragile, emerging v market economies.

Contrary to popular belief, death is not a moment in time, such as when the heart stops beating, respiration ceases, or the brain stops functioning. Death, rather, is a process--a process that can be interrupted well after it has begun. Innovative techniques, such as drastically reducing the patient's body temperature, have proven to be effective in revitalizing both the body and mind, but studies show they are only employed in approximately half of the hospitals throughout the United States and Europe.

From the unique position of a decade in government service, I was given the opportunity to observe the changes in the provision of emer gency medical care across the country. In 1970, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) systems were a new and much needed development in the national health care delivery system. A systems approach to field casualty care has been progressively improved during each successive military conflict since the Civil War. These improvements were ini tiated after the rnedil: al care and evacuation disaster experienced by the Union Army of the Potomac at Bull Run on July 21, 1861. During the Civil War, major changes in administration, professional personnel, transportation, hospitals, sanitation, and medical records established patterns that have been continually refined and improved. Stimulated by the pressing demands of war surgery and coupled with parallel advances in medical care over the last century, an almost unbelievable level of performance was realized in Vietnam. Advances in field resuscitation, efficiency of aeromedical transportation, and energetic treatment of military casualties have proved to be major fac tors in the decrease in death rates of battle casualties reaching facilities: from 8% in World War I to 4. 5% in World War II to 2. 5% in Korea and to less than 2% in Vietnam."

Metabolic and electrolyte disorders can pose special challenges to physicians caring for the critically ill patients. Constrained by time and circumstances, clinicians require rapid access to information to help assess and manage these often life-threatening conditions. In this book, a readily useable road map is presented, emphasizing the interactions among problems and suggesting clear lines of action. Keeping the physiopathological mechanisms to the essential, and maintaining an uncluttered format, each chapter provides guidelines to understanding "how did we get here" and "what should we do now," as quickly and safely as possible. New findings involving the brain in traumatic and septic shock and after brain injury are reported in this book, including pathophysiological and pathohistological results. An experimental and clinical approach to treatment is presented together with specific results obtained from the encephalogram and from histopathological study with regard to the immunohistochemistry of toxic lipid peroxidant products. The latest results of clinical and experimental pathophysiology in inflammatory processes after traumatic brain injury and the therapeutic effects of hypertonic fluid therapy are also discussed.
