Emergency Clinical Diagnosis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): Ashis Banerjee Emergency Clinical Diagnosis (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Ashis Banerjee
R2,901 Discovery Miles 29 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The aim of this book is to help the reader achieve the correct diagnosis in the emergency setting, which continues to remain a challenge, given the variety of potential clinical presentations. Diagnostic failure is the largest reason for delays in provision of appropriate treatment, which can be life-saving, and the largest source of clinical complaints and untoward incidents leading to poor clinical outcomes and to litigation. In this book, the readers will find diagnostic checklists, organised according to potential emergency presentations and classified under body systems, including atypical presentations, lists of differential diagnoses and guidance to pattern recognition. Apart from providing an aide-memoire for a range of presentations, it is hoped that the book will allow for better quality and informed referrals, especially between health care providers. This book is aimed as a rapid reference guide for all levels of medical staff working in emergency and acute care settings in the English-speaking world, but may also benefit nursing professionals and medical students.

Eric J Russell
R2,038 Discovery Miles 20 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

First responders in the fire, emergency, and police agencies work in high-risk, critical situations, and require effective leadership. Using the approach of Servant Leadership, Dr. Russell explains how executive level/chief officers can lead their teams by helping responders develop and perform as highly as possible and meet the needs of their followers. To bring the power of this philosophical approach towards leadership to life, this book demonstrates how its many aspects come together as a system, in order to strengthen the community of emergency responders. Featuring case studies and questions as meditative exercises, the book offers readers a rich learning experience. Targeted at fire chiefs, fire commissioners, police chiefs, and Emergency Medical Service, and other first responders, this book will have a positive impact on these organizations and the communities they serve. It is also useful for training aspiring executive level leaders/chief officers.

Ethics in Palliative Care - A Complete Guide (Paperback): Robert C. Macauley Ethics in Palliative Care - A Complete Guide (Paperback)
Robert C. Macauley
R2,617 Discovery Miles 26 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

No specialty faces more diverse and challenging ethical dilemmas than palliative medicine. What is the best way to plan ahead for the end of life? How should physicians respond when patients refuse treatments likely to be beneficial, or demand treatments not likely to be? Who makes medical decisions for patients who are too ill to decide for themselves? Do patients have the "right to die" (and, if so, what exactly does that mean)? In this volume noted palliative care physician and bioethicist Robert C. Macauley addresses a broad range of issues from historical, legal, clinical, and ethical perspectives. Clinically nuanced and philosophically rigorous, Ethics in Palliative Care analyzes hot-button subjects like physician assisted dying and euthanasia, as well as often overlooked topics such as pediatric palliative care, organ donation, palliative care research, and moral distress. Drawing on real cases yet written in non-technical language, this complete guide will appeal to both medical professionals and lay readers.

Paediatric Emergencies - A Practical Guide to Acute Paediatrics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982):... Paediatric Emergencies - A Practical Guide to Acute Paediatrics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982)
Thomas Lissauer
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The aim of this book is to provide a practical guide to help junior doctors to manage the important acute paediatric problems they are likely to encounter. The emphasis has been placed on the diagnostic problems and management when the child first presents. The approach taken is largely pragmatic, in contrast with the more theoretical approach of undergraduate teaching. As many doctors in general paediatrics are also required to perform neonatal resuscitation, a chapter on this topic has been included, but no attempt has been made to cover the specialized field of neonatal intensive care. Several of the chapters have been published in a series of articles in Hospital Update. They have been thoroughly revised and many new chapters added. It would have been impossible for me to have written this book without the help and encouragement of my wife, Dr Ann Goldman. She has read the book at each stage of its gestation and made many constructive suggestions and improvements. I am also grateful to Dr Paul Hutchins who has helped me considerably. Dr Doug Jones has provided helpful advice on the anaesthetic aspects and practical procedures and contributed the section on the insertion of central venous catheters. Many other colleagues have read sections of the book and I should like to thank Drs Ruby Schwartz, Terry Stacey, Andy Whitelaw, Rodney Rivers, John Warner, Sue Rigden, Susan nah Hart, Mike Liberman and Bernard Valman."

A Life in Trauma - Memoirs of an Emergency Physician (Paperback): Chris Luke A Life in Trauma - Memoirs of an Emergency Physician (Paperback)
Chris Luke
R522 R475 Discovery Miles 4 750 Save R47 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Concern. Compassion. Doubt. Despair. Anger. Hope. Imagine juggling these feelings every day in a situation where your ability to manage them could be the difference between life and death. For Dr Chris Luke, a consultant in emergency medicine, these experiences are an intrinsic part of the job - ranging from rage at a system that often leaves vulnerable people waiting anxiously, to the incomparable satisfaction of relieving patients' suffering and distress and making a real difference in people's lives and in society. Here, Dr Luke reveals his own rollercoaster journey from orphanage boy to one of the leading emergency physicians in the country. Luke's recollections and reflections on a life spent on the frontline - grappling with his own health issues, burnout and sometimes despair at a dysfunctional system - make for compelling reading. A Life in Trauma is a frank, remarkable account of a career spent helping others, sometimes at a painful personal cost, and ultimately offers a positive outlook on the potential of Ireland's healthcare system in the future.

Acute Heart Failure (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2008): Alexandre Mebazaa, Mihai Gheorghiade, Faiez... Acute Heart Failure (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2008)
Alexandre Mebazaa, Mihai Gheorghiade, Faiez Zannad, Joseph E. Parrillo
R4,593 Discovery Miles 45 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

For many years, there has been a great deal of work done on chronic congestive heart failure while acute heart failure has been considered a difficult to handle and hopeless syndrome. However, in recent years acute heart failure has become a growing area of study and this is the first book to cover extensively the diagnosis and management of this complex condition. The book reflects the considerable amounts of new data reported and many new concepts which have been proposed in the last 3-4 years looking at the epidemiology, diagnostic and treatment of acute heart failure.

The ECG Manual - An Evidence-Based Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2009): Marc Gertsch The ECG Manual - An Evidence-Based Approach (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2009)
Marc Gertsch
R2,477 Discovery Miles 24 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

For every physician that interprets ECGs, there is great need to understand a vast amount of information regarding the technique. That the basics of the technique have changed little over the last 100 years means that there is a huge amount of subtle detail that must be learnt to enable its effective use as a diagnostic test. The ECG technique is critical for deciding upon further diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions (notably coronary angiography, PTCA, stenting, coronary artery bypass grafting, pacemaker insertion, ablation, electroconversion etc). Without attaining the skills to practice the ECG procedure and knowledge of its diagnostic value - skills often overlooked during medical training - physicians will be unlikely to use it to the benefit of their patients.
