The second edition of Emergencies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology provides a practical and accessible guide to all emergency situations encountered in obstetrics and gynaecology, from the immediately life-threatening to the smaller but urgent problems that may arise. Designed around the symptoms and signs with which the patient presents to the hospital, this handbook explains how to arrive at a differential diagnosis and how to prevent, manage, or treat an emergency. The 'Obstetric emergencies' section covers topics from early pregnancy through to post-delivery complications, whilst the 'Gynaecologic emergencies' section addresses those issues that could potentially pose a threat to a women's fertility or even her life. Addressing new topics on issues that have become more prevalent, such as substance misuse in pregnancy, and violence against women and children, the second edition of Emergencies in Obstetrics and Gynaecology is an essential read. A new topic on 'preoperative assessment' outlines how to manage consent, the risks, benefits, and what the patient should expect.
A practical guide to understanding and navigating the unique challenges faced by physicians and other professionals who wish to undertake research in the ED or other acute care setting. Focusing on the hyper-acute and acute care environment and fulfilling two closely-related needs: 1) the need for even seasoned researchers to understand the specific logistics and issues of doing research in the ED; and 2) the need to educate clinically active physicians in research methodology. This new text is not designed to be a complex, encyclopedic resource, but instead a concise, easy-to-read resource designed to convey key need-to-know information within a comprehensive framework. Aimed at the busy brain, either as a sit-down read or as a selectively-read reference guide to fill in knowledge gaps, chapters are short, compartmentalized, and are used strategically throughout the text in order to introduce and frame concepts. This format makes it easy - and even entertaining - for the research novice to integrate and absorb completely new (and typically dry) material. The textbook addresses aspects of feasibility, efficiency, ethics, statistics, safety, logistics, and collaboration in acute research. Overall, it grants access for the seasoned researcher seeking to learn about acute research to empathically integrate learning points into his or her knowledge base. As the ED is the primary setting for hyper-acute and acute care, and therefore a prime site for related clinical trial recruitment and interventions, the book presents specific logistical research challenges that researchers from any discipline, including physicians, research nurse coordinators, study monitors, or industry partners, need to understand in order to succeed.
Patients in the neurointensive care unit pose many clinical challenges for the attending physician. Even experienced clinicians occasionally arrive at the point where diagnostic, work-up, treatment, or prognostic thinking becomes stymied. In daily practice, neurocritical care pertains to managing deteriorating patients, treatment of complications but also end-of-life care assisting families with difficult decisions. Part of the "What Do I Do Now?" series, Neurocritical Care provides insight into interventions in acute neurologic disorders. Using a case-based approach, this volume emphasizes how to handle comparatively common clinical problems emergently. New to this edition are cases on monitoring and prognostication. All cases have been carefully revised, and new information, references, and practical tables have been added. Neurocritical Care is both an engaging collection of thought-provoking cases and a self-assessment tool that tests the reader's ability to answer the question, "What do I do now?"
Inpatient units treat some of the most clinically challenging psychiatric patients. Clinicians must carefully balance patients' rights with safety concerns of violence and suicide. This updated manual is compact and practical, addressing the common questions and issues clinicians face in day-to-day practice. Chapters are organised around the diagnoses found on inpatient psychiatric units, allowing readers to find their area of interest quickly. A user-friendly question and answer format anticipates commonly asked questions, and tables provide easily accessible information, including diagnostic criteria and medication effects. Incorporating advances in the field over the past decade, chapters review new treatments including ketamine use and chronotherapy, as well as the most recent evidence-based approaches for patients with borderline personality disorder. Drawing on the authors' wealth of experience, their recommendations for best practice as well as treatment philosophies will be valuable for all healthcare professionals working in mental health.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among adults, yet it need not be fatal. Though survival in most communities is very poor, a few communities achieve rates as high as 50%. Why are some communities so successful in snatching life from the jaws of death? "Resuscitate " describes the steps any EMS system can take to improve cardiac arrest survival. It is written for the medical directors, administrative directors, fire chiefs, dispatch directors, and program supervisor who direct and run EMS systems all across the country, and for the EMTs, paramedics, and dispatchers who provide frontline care. This second edition of "Resuscitate " provides fifteen concrete steps to improve survival. Four steps will lead to rapid improvements at the local level and are relatively easy to implement. Six additional steps are more difficult to implement but also likely to improve survival. The remaining steps recommend changes at the national level. "Resuscitate " is the official textbook for the Resuscitation Academy, held twice a year in Seattle. Cosponsored by Seattle Medic One, King County EMS, and the Medic One Foundation, the Academy draws attendees from throughout the world for two intensive days of classes, demonstrations, and workshops to acquire the knowledge and tools to improve survival in their own communities. This new edition includes lessons learned from attendees of the Academy as well as from the faculty's evolving thoughts on how to measure performance and improve survival, one community at a time. It also includes an addendum on the Resuscitation Academy (resuscitationacademy.org). For more than thirty years, Mickey S. Eisenberg M.D., Ph.D., has played a leading role in developing King County, Washington's emergency response to cases of sudden cardiac arrest, a system recognized as among the very best in the nation. He is a professor of medicine at the University of Washington and serves as the medical director of King County Emergency Medical Services. "If you care about sudden cardiac arrest in your community and how emergency medical services respond to this critical emergency, I can think of no more important book than this."-from the Foreword by Roger D. White, M.D., Mayo Clinic "Eisenberg has done a remarkable job in articulating the steps to be taken for communities to improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest. "Resuscitate " is a 'best in class' and one of a kind guide that provides inspiration as well as direction in translating resuscitatioin science into practice. It is essential for all those who seek to establish strategies to improve survival and quality of life for cardiac arrest victims whose hearts are 'too young to die.'" -David B. Hiltz, EMT-P Resuscitation Academy Alumni "This book was transformative to me and to the EMS system in Durham, North Carolina. I read it cover to cover and attended the Resuscitation Academy. Eisenberg and his colleagues gave me the knowledge, the tools, and the inspiration to improve resuscitation in Durham. Step by step we are getting better and more lives are being saved." -Captain David Jacobs, Durham County Fire Department
Mountain Emergency Medicine has seen exponential development due to the ever increasing number of people who hike or trek as well as practice extreme sports. Emergency physicians and nurses need to be equipped with the necessary training to be able to manage "on the field" accidents and sicknesses as well as their own physical security. Theoretical knowledge is generally of high level but practical expertise is dangerously lacking in many operators. Furthermore, treatment modalities on the field have not been completely codified and are not supported by internationally-accepted guidelines. This book is the first to offer a complete and thorough approach to this field of Emergency Medicine based on the latest research findings.

Head injuries are commonplace. Though most patients survive, the consequences, both physical and social, can be devastating. The methods of initial assessment and management can have a crucial effect on determining the outcome of the injury, and long-term effects. However, only a minority of head-injured patients are cared for by Neurosurgeons. The majority are seen by non-specialists, often junior doctors and nurses, and treated in district hospitals where specialist neurosurgical assistance is unavailable. As a guide for doctors and nurses working in the A & E department, or the Orthopaedic or General Surgical Ward, the emphasis of this book is on the early management of the head- injured patient. New to the second edition are chapters on managing the 'disturbed' head injured patient, a chapter of special value to nurses (who often have to deal with this difficult task). A new chapter on anaesthesia and head injuries has also been added, with other chapters significantly revised to reflect the crucial role played by anaesthetists in head injury management. Providing practical advice on the early treatment of minor head injuries, and the management of major head injuries, the book provides advice that will be essential in ensuring effective treatment of these patients. From reviews of first edition: '... an excellent account of the management of head injuries... this one certainly fulfils its stated aim and is to be recommended.' JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY, NEUROSCIENCE, AND PSYCHIATRY '... concise and well-referenced... a worthwhile addition to an A& E department's bookshelves.' NURSING TIMES 'The text is easy to read, and is of particular use to non-specialist staff... Useful as an introduction for junior neurosurgeons in training.' ANNALS OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS OF ENGLAND
Widely varying patient needs, a wide provider mix, significant power differentials, and a heightened emotional state all contribute to barriers in communication in the medical field and all of these elements are magnified in an emergency department. Communication in Emergency Medicine highlights key challenges to effective communication in Emergency Medicine that may be experienced by healthcare providers, students, nurses, and even hospital administrators. The text addresses these pitfalls by demonstrating how a mix of foundational communication techniques and leadership skills can be used to successfully overcome barriers in information exchange highlighted by real-life clinical scenarios with an emphasis on avoidable pitfalls. Chapters explore principles of communication, patient and family interactions, and communications within and outside of the healthcare system, rounding off with a number of case studies. The approach of utilizing the environment of an emergency department with high stakes conflicts faced every day by medical professionals distinguishes Communication in Emergency Medicine as an ideal resource for Emergency Medicine providers, with lessons which can also be applied in many other settings as well. |
