Marcus L. Martin, Sheryl Heron, Lisa Moreno-Walton, Michelle Strickland
R2,941 Discovery Miles 29 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This new edition focuses on bias in health care and provides a variety of case examples related to the timely topics of unconscious bias and microaggressions encountered by patients, students, attending and resident physicians, nurses, staff, and advanced practice providers in various healthcare settings. The proliferation of literature on unconscious bias and microaggressions has raised public awareness around these concerns. This case compendium discusses strategies and addresses professional responses to bias in health care and extends beyond the individual patient and healthcare provider into the communities where biased assumptions and attitudes exist. Recognizing that ethnic minorities, the elderly, the poor, and persons with Medicaid coverage utilize the emergency department at higher rates than the general population, this compendium also builds upon the case studies from the first edition to cover a broader array of underserved minority groups. Diversity and Inclusion in Quality Patient Care: Your Story/Our Story - A Case-Based Compendium, 2nd Edition is an essential resource for attending and resident physicians, nurses, staff, advanced practice providers, and students in emergency medicine, primary care, and public health.

Sex and Gender in Acute Care Medicine (Paperback): Alyson J. McGregor, Esther K. Choo, Bruce M. Becker Sex and Gender in Acute Care Medicine (Paperback)
Alyson J. McGregor, Esther K. Choo, Bruce M. Becker
R2,533 Discovery Miles 25 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until the past decade, clinicians and researchers assumed that the medical evaluation and treatment of both women and men were the same. This archaic and dangerous notion persisted in spite of the clear anatomic and physiologic differences between the genders. Today, we fully understand that this paradigm is false. In all specialties of medicine, practitioners and researchers are beginning to consider the influence of sex and gender and how it should inform the care of their patients. This book focuses on the issue of sex and gender in the evaluation and treatment of patients specifically in the delivery of acute medical care. It serves as a guide both to clinicians interested in the impact of sex and gender on their practice and to researchers interested in the current state of the art in the field and critical future research directions.

Ambulance Services - Leadership and Management Perspectives (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Paresh... Ambulance Services - Leadership and Management Perspectives (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Paresh Wankhade, Kevin Mackway-Jones
R2,476 Discovery Miles 24 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume provides fresh insights and management understanding of the changing role of the ambulance services against the backdrop of massive cuts in health budgets around the world and the changing context of pre-hospital care within the wider healthcare networks. The challenges of funding, training and cultural transformation are now felt globally. The need to learn and adapt from suitable models of ambulance service delivery have never been greater. The book offers critical insights into the theory and practice of strategic and operational management of ambulance services and the leadership needs for the service. One of the highlight of this volume is to bring together scholarship using experts- academics, practitioners and professionals in the field, to each of the chosen topics. The chapters are based in the practical experiences of the authors and are written in a way that is accessible and suitable for a range of audiences. We are confident that this book will cater to a wider audience to inform policy and practice, both in the UK and internationally. Paresh Wankhade is Professor of Leadership and Management at Edge Hill University, UK Kevin Mackway-Jones is the Medical Director at North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, UK Endorsements "This unique and valuable publication, charts the history and development of the ambulance service in England over the last hundred years or so. The role of this key emergency service has always been important, and arguably never more so than today. The contributing authors have not only provided the reader with great insights into where the service has come from and the leadership challenges it has, and continues to face; it also gives examples of how the future could look as our journey of transformation continues." Peter Bradley CBE, MBA (and author of Taking Healthcare to the Patient 2005), Chief Executive Officer. St John National Headquarters, New Zealand "With a year on year increase in demand for emergency ambulances and over 9 million calls annually, the UK Ambulance Service must change from its emergency care and transport focus model. With the increase in professionalism of paramedics and an uplift in assessment and clinical skills the modern paramedic is increasingly able to treat at home, direct patients with alternative care pathways and avoid transportation to overburdened Emergency Departments. Whilst there is some historical and cultural resistance to change there is a need for further development in clinical skills and a new perspective for the future Ambulance Service. This book brings together practitioners, managers, academics and provides a broad understanding of the major management issues in the UK Ambulance Service. It includes the history of the Ambulance Service, quality and risk management issues, commissioning, leadership, intra-operability and shape of the future ambulance service. The content will be of interest to students, practitioners and academics". Sir Keith Porter, Professor of Clinical Traumatology, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, United Kingdom

Vasovagal Syncope (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Paolo Alboni, Raffaello Furlan Vasovagal Syncope (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Paolo Alboni, Raffaello Furlan
R2,825 Discovery Miles 28 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is exceptional in being devoted solely to vasovagal syncope (VVS), the most frequent cause of transient loss of consciousness in the general population. All aspects of VVS are covered, including epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, prognosis, therapy and implications for particular activities such as work, driving and physical activity. The context for the book is that about half of the population suffer from this type of loss of consciousness during their lifetime and then often call for general practitioner and/or emergency room assistance. While many pathophysiological aspects of VVS have been clarified, others remain elusive. The diagnosis of VVS may be easy, but it is sometimes challenging. From the therapeutic standpoint, few evidence-based therapies have been established and the large majority of treatments remain unsatisfactory. Vasovagal Syncope presents the latest evidence on all these issues and will be of value for internists, cardiologists, neurologists, emergency physicians and general practitioners.

This book, written by expert surgeons, offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of all aspects of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Coverage includes the indications for surgery, anesthesia, surgical technique, and the prevention and management of complications, with extensive reference to the latest clinical evidence and assessment of the benefits of the laparoscopic approach, for example in terms of outcomes and day surgery. New technologies, including SILS, NOTES, robotic surgery, and miniaturized instruments, are reviewed. The learning curve and training are also extensively discussed, and an individual chapter is devoted to the views of international experts in the field. Readers will find the book to be an ideal guide to this gold standard technique, which continues to evolve some 20 years after the National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference first published recommendations regarding indications for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Modern Anesthetics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Jurgen Schuttler, Helmut Schwilden Modern Anesthetics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Jurgen Schuttler, Helmut Schwilden
R14,551 Discovery Miles 145 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Some important constraints of anesthesia must be taken into consideration when the pharmacological properties of modern anesthetics are discussed. The most imp- tant of these could be that the target effect be achieved preferably within seconds, at most within a few minutes. Similarly, offset of drug action should be achieved within minutes rather hours. The target effects, such as unconsciousness, are pot- tially life-threatening, as are the side effects of modern anesthetics, such as respi- tory and cardiovascular depression. Finally, the patient's purposeful responses are not available to guide drug dosage, because, either the patient is unconscious, or more problematically, the patient is aware but unable to communicate pain because of neuromuscular blockade. These constraints were already recognised 35 years ago, when in 1972 Volume XXX entitled "Modern Inhalation Anesthetics" appeared in this Handbook Series. The present volume is meant as a follow up and extension of that volume. At the beginning of the 1970's anesthesia was commonly delivered by inhalation, with only very few exceptions. The clinical understanding of that time considered anesthesia as a unique state achieved by any of the inhalation anesthetics, in- pendent of their specific molecular structure. "The very mechanism of anesthetic action at the biophase" was discussed within the theoretical framework of the "u- tary theory of narcosis".
