Medical Primatology - History, Biological Foundations and Applications (Hardcover): Eman P. Fridman, Ronald D. Nadler Medical Primatology - History, Biological Foundations and Applications (Hardcover)
Eman P. Fridman, Ronald D. Nadler
R6,876 Discovery Miles 68 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Monkeys and apes have been used successfully in medical research for many decades due to the high degree of relatedness and biological similarity of these primates to humans. Medical Primatology begins with a discussion of the history of this research, and then focuses on the biological foundations upon which medical primatology has been built. Primate taxonomy and evolution are reviewed using not only traditional sources of data, but also recent experimental evidence from molecular biology, genetics and biomedicine that indicates, in particular, the need to place higher simians in the family of man.
Medical Primatology for the first time provides a comprehensive summary text linking the use of simians in biomedical research to their kinship with humans, and it condenses a wide range of scientific literature into one volume. It will be a useful reference book for those involved in biological, anthropological, biomedical, clinical and pharmacological research on primates, and students and specialists in the biological sciences and medicine.

The IACUC Handbook (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Jerald Silverman, Mark A. Suckow, Sreekant Murthy The IACUC Handbook (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Jerald Silverman, Mark A. Suckow, Sreekant Murthy
R2,684 Discovery Miles 26 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ever since its establishment by USDA regulation in the mid-1980s, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has evolved as the premier instrument of animal welfare oversight within research institutions in the United States. As biomedical research continuously grows, the role and impact of the IACUC has increased in scope and complexity. The IACUC Handbook has become "the Bible" for individuals when the time comes for them to serve on their institution's IACUC. It provides a foundation for understanding and implementing the many and varied responsibilities of this committee. This Third Edition comprehensively addresses the significant changes in the pertinent regulatory environment and interpretation of applicable federal laws, regulations, and policies. It provides multiple references and commentary on the new edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the new AVMA Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals: 2013 Edition, and the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare's Frequently Asked Questions. The Third Edition also features an updated survey of IACUC practices from institutions around the United States, offering wisdom gained from their experience. In addition, it includes a chapter that provides an international perspective on how animal welfare reviews can function in other countries.

R3,432 Discovery Miles 34 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Goat meat is a valuable source of cheap protein, making goats the ideal sustainable meat for low-income populations. Other benefits of goat meat, such as its low fat content and green credentials, are also becoming more recognized around the world, thought the goat meat industry is still surpassed by that cattle, sheep and pigs.Written by some of the world's leading goat meat scientists, and drawing from the most recent publications in the field, this book comprehensively covers the most important areas of goat meat production. Chapters discuss the role of genetics, breeding, reproduction, and nutrition in producing good quality, profitable goat meat. The role of genetics, breeding, reproduction and nutrition in producing good quality, profitable goat meat are all discussed in detail. The mineral, amino acid and fatty acid composition of goat meat is also addressed, along with a discussion of its nutritive value, aimed at highlighting its health benefits over other red meats. Essential reading for students and researchers in animal science and production, this book is also a useful resource for goat meat producers and breeders.

The Biology of the Avian Respiratory System - Evolution, Development, Structure and Function (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... The Biology of the Avian Respiratory System - Evolution, Development, Structure and Function (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
John N. Maina
R4,179 Discovery Miles 41 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The central focus of this book is the avian respiratory system. The authors explain why the respiratory system of modern birds is built the way it is and works the way that it does. Birds have been and continue to attract particular interest to biologists. The more birds are studied, the more it is appreciated that the existence of human-kind on earth very much depends directly and indirectly on the existence of birds. Regarding the avian respiratory system, published works are scattered in biological journals of fields like physiology, behavior, anatomy/morphology and ecology while others appear in as far afield as paleontology and geology. The contributors to this book are world-renowned experts in their various fields of study. Special attention is given to the evolution, the structure, the function and the development of the lung-air sac system. Readers will not only discover the origin of birds but will also learn how the respiratory system of theropod dinosaurs worked and may have transformed into the avian one. In addition, the work explores such aspects as swallowing mechanism in birds, the adaptations that have evolved for flight at extreme altitude and gas exchange in eggs. It is a highly informative and carefully presented work that provides cutting edge scientific insights for readers with an interest in the respiratory biology and the evolution of birds.

Italian Opera Since 1945 (Hardcover): Raymond Fearn Italian Opera Since 1945 (Hardcover)
Raymond Fearn
R3,924 Discovery Miles 39 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Italy, the birthplace of opera in the late sixteenth century, has in recent decades seen remarkable and vital musical growth, with composers as diverse as Luciano Berio and Nino Rota, Luigi Nono and Sylvano Bussotti, Giacomo Manzoni, Bruno Maderna and Salvatore Sciarrino. The musical theatre has figured prominently in the work of Italian composers during this period, ranging from operas conceived in a traditional mode to works of a Music Theatre variety, and in style from popular to avant-garde.
In this book Raymond Fearn surveys this Italian musico-theatrical phenomenon in the period since the Second World War, examining a wide range of works such as Nono's "Intolleranza" and "Al Gran Sole Carico d'Amore," Berio's "Passaggio" and "Un re in ascolto," Manzoni's "Atomtod" and "La Sentenza" and Castiglioni's "Oberon and The King's" "Masque," and places these developments within a cultural and theatrical context. Illustrated by numerous musical examples and producti

To place animals within the realm of nature, means inserting them among the articulations of culture and the social. Semiotics has never avoided this chiasmus, choosing to deal from the outset with the problem of the languages of animals following the old admonition of Montaigne: it is not that animals do not talk, it is us who do not understand them. Recent research in the field of the anthropology of nature and sociology of sciences and techniques allow to think about the Zoosemiotic issue in a different way. Instead of transplanting the language structures - gestures, LIS, etc. - for a semiotic study of the forms of the human and social meaning, it seems more apt to look at their discourse, and as such, the actual interactions, communicative and scientific as well as practical and functional, between humans and non-humans. This book aims to investigate precisely this hypothesis, known here as Zoosemiotics 2.0, working on several fronts and levels: * Anthropology * Languages of the image and visual representations, from art history to cinema * Old and new media. From literature to comics, from cartoons to TV documentaries but also advertising, music, Web and social networks. All those cultural products that talk about the role of human and non-human in society implicitly proposing (and in some way imposing) a form of articulation of such a relationship. * Food and feeding rites * Animalist, vegetarian and vegan movements * Philosophy: metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics
